I think one of the most helpful combat tips is that if you have a character down or in danger and don't want to use spell slots or something, you can have a character use their action to throw a healing potion on the hurt character and it will be the same as if they drunk it.
I just watched your beginner's guide video last night and was hoping the combat tutorial was coming soon. And now here it is! Thank you, good sir! You are doing us newcomers a real service with these videos.
This is a very solid beginner's guide. After fumbling my way through Pathfinder's Combat and advice friends who play tabletop; I'm very glad this video exists. It covers everything I think is crucial and in a very clarified way through examples. Love it!
My thoughts exactly. Keep seeing topics like "what are your favorite spells in Baldur's Gate?" and having newbies comparing the strategies of cantrips and whether Misty Step or Web is more important, it's so wild to see. I think it'll bring tons of people into DnD because they literally gamified reading the 5e player's handbook lol @@cryptickitsune1876
Thanks! You explained it well. I really had to concentrate to understand it all because this ain’t the type of game I usually play. Anyway, I’m taking a break, and play Dredge for a bit. Then back to Baldur’s Gate 3. I got stuck cause I couldn’t work out how to defeat all the bosses at the goblin camp - my character might not be powerful enough yet.
big tip is use positioning to your advantage, Height and choke points make a huge difference If your able to get most your team up high before the fight youll have a huge advantage
Hey thanks Karl! Have watched several of your vids in the past. One tip for the goblin fortress is use the rafters above. Cheers and thanks for watching
My GOD, thank you! I've watched 4-5 other guides before watching yours and all previous guides were so confusing and referenced D&D without actually referencing the game and games UI. Your guide definitely helped a TON! Thanks!
I'd recommend an itemization tutorial too if you're looking for ideas. I see a lot of players feeling bad they miss the ever burning blade, when in reality, it's just a greatsword that is constantly dipped in fire (which you can do with any weapon and proper prep). DnD items can be weird and something like a +1 sword might not look as powerful as it is.
The thing about this game is that people go to so much trouble picking the class they wat to play but then when you actually play the game you have to play all the other classes just as well as the one you wanted to be. I like the idea of a turn-based combat because you don't need super reflexes but that is kind of a lot of research for an old man to tackle.
I don't super need any guides since I played EA, but these guides of yours are the only bg3 content I dare watch to avoid spoilers while I'm playing the game myself, so I'm really enjoying watching them regardless.
I remember being a kid going through BG1&2 after I finished it I learned the "rules". Just equipping good stuff and using diffrent classes = sure way to finish it back as a kid not knowing any fantasy stuff or D&D rules. I mean, I realized for ex I needed more tanking or off tank so I just made Jaheira summon animals to distract enemies, or make my DPS chaarcters try and snipe out the dangerous targets etc, even as a small kid you pick it up fast.
Great guide. This really makes the why’s of combat, and how to approach it much more understandable. I’m having so much fun with this game and other CRPGs, and it’s thanks to you
I've played the various versions of D&D since the 1980's. I took all of this for granted since I knew it from playing the TTRPGs. When you list it all out like this there actually is a lot that a new player needs to know.
I'm not a beginner and learned nothing new from this. HOWEVER, I love it anyway because its great for the people who are beginners. As always it was greatly executed by Wolf! Fantastic.
I appreciate the guide on the lechanics. Would it be possible to delve into basics of strategy on bg3 in a future video? I've got the gist of it after 30h of gameplay but I'm still ASS in combat and end up losing way too often and avoiding fights most of the time.
Having a character with Bless makes things a lot easier to hit. There is a ring item in the first act that allows you to put bless on someone when you heal them which is nice if you break concentration on your Bless spell. Typically a Bard/Cleric are good for blessing because typicality won't be in the midst of battle, more so bard than Cleric. So your concentration is less likely to be broken just by avoiding enemy interactions in general. Positioning helps to, for example line of sight, if you place yourself where enemies can't directly target you that's great, because you can move in between cover when using your caster/ranger fighters. These are just basics but they help a lot in terms of using your environment to your advantage. When engaging in a potential fight while in mid conversation, select your other characters to re-position them before the fight starts. Having your Frontline character do all the talking makes this much easier since they naturally have high AC and are harder to hit. All your caster/ranged characters should always be on the high ground and not in the middle of the fight.
That's me. I find I am getting angry and not having fun in battles so dropped down to explorer. It makes enjoying the game so much better. I feel like I shouldn't drop down to easy but it's my game and I don't care!

Some numbers, for those interested: Average dice rolls are half of the max roll +1 (I.E. a d8’s average is 5). This is how class HP is calculated. Good for knowing if your damage will likely kill an enemy. Each number on the D20 (used by most non-damage rolls) is 5%. The exceptions are 1 (failure) and 20 (critical success this may or may not apply out of combat.) “Advantage” represents an average of +5, or 25% added to a roll. It also roughly doubles your chance for a critical hit. The lucky trait on Halflings may represent double advantage, depending on the way Larian programmed the feature (if one of the d20 in an advantage roll is a 1, it may trigger a “Luck” re-roll.)
"*IF* you land your attack" is the the key phrase. Don't know how many 90% hit chance attacks I missed when I played today, but it was getting ridiculous. The glory of RNG... Anyways, educational video again. Thanks!
To any Druid-Barbs out there. I found going druid into barb makes spells like Shillelagh and Flame blade use Charisma over Wisdom for some reason (maybe game thinks cha is the barbs spell attribute??) I found that if I respec into a barb and then multiclass into druid it fixes the problem. I guess I will have the main proficiencies as a barb instead of druid now but oh well.
From the sheer amount of 98% 90% 80% chance to hit that I've missed there is definitely more rolls going on in the background. They probably have light level and other things mixed in that doesn't represent that chance to hit properly.
This game is absolutely stunning! Mind boggling really. It is the best $60 i've probably spent in 20 years. Very good tutorial vid.

“Advantage” represents an average of +5, or 25% added to a roll. It also roughly doubles your chance for a critical hit.
The lucky trait on Halflings may represent double advantage, depending on the way Larian programmed the feature (if one of the d20 in an advantage roll is a 1, it may trigger a “Luck” re-roll.)
Just to add to this, it seems for BG3 that Larian did do crits for at least some of the non combat rolls.
"*IF* you land your attack" is the the key phrase. Don't know how many 90% hit chance attacks I missed when I played today, but it was getting ridiculous. The glory of RNG...
Anyways, educational video again. Thanks!
Hate to see it on my team, love to see it on the enemy team!

I'm trying to go for a tank warlock it's working so far with all the defense spells I have
Learned a lot form this! Thanks Wolf!
I helped some vets!!!? Or you just being nice to me Rep :-D Thanks a lot.
To any Druid-Barbs out there. I found going druid into barb makes spells like Shillelagh and Flame blade use Charisma over Wisdom for some reason (maybe game thinks cha is the barbs spell attribute??)
I found that if I respec into a barb and then multiclass into druid it fixes the problem.
