    In the US, the term alternative started to come to prominence towards the end of the 80s, though it was used as early as '85 (so, before this Smiths album). Before then it was called New Music & Postmodern. HOWEVER, in the UK we just used the term Indie Rock, as in those produced by small independent labels. Indie Charts started to be published around 1980 here. So, the Smiths was classed as an Indie band over here.

    Those of us who were in college in the 80s and were sick of mainstream pop and hair metal and all that… We listened to a lot of The Smiths, REM, The Cure, The Fall, Cocteau Twins, The Jesus and Mary Chain, etc. We called it alternative back then. College radio was a big part of our lives, not corporate radio and not MTV.

    I don't recall the term "alternative" being used colloquially back then. I kinda recall in Rolling Stone there were "college radio" charts, where you find bands like the Smiths. But if you ever asked someone back in the mid 80s what they listened to, I don't think ANYONE would say "I listen to alternative." Instead, you might list bands which communicated the idea: "The Smiths, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cure..." etc.

    • @deborahpaley21

      @@deborahpaley21 I don’t recall them being described as New Wave. Here’s one description I found. The Smiths' "non-rhythm-and-blues, whiter-than-white fusion of 1960s rock and post-punk was a repudiation of contemporary dance pop.”

    • @2ramona959
      @2ramona959 2 дня назад

      We used to say "college radio", because that was the only place you were going to hear any of this in almost the entire US outside of 120 Minutes on MTV. Sometimes referred to as 2nd Brit invasion. I don't remember 'alternative' being a term getting thrown around back then. "New Wave" didn't really apply to the Smiths because they were actually a throwback to a pure guitar band without all the synths and electronic drums that were prevalent in New Wave. Bands like the Thompson Twins, Heaven 17, too many to list. People forget that most of what's now considered "80's" music was never played on mainstream radio. It was all Madonna and lots of other garbage on the pop stations and 60's and 70's dinosaur rock on the AOR stations… Led Zepplin 24/7. If not for MTV bands like U2, REM, INXS, etc. never would have broken through.

    Unless I’m very much mistaken, Johnny Marr would write and record the music then give it to Morrissey, who would then write lyrics and come up with the vocals on his own. I don’t think He knows much of anything about the theory. He just has this unique way of phrasing. To me this explains perfectly his style of singing, it’s like he discovered his own style.

      Girl Afraid was the song that made me delve into the Smiths. I had bought the 12" single of How Soon Is Now, and at first I didn't pay attention to Girl Afraid on the B-side. Such a different sound if your intro to the Smiths is How Soon Is Now. But I guess I gave it another listen without prejudice one time, and thought wow, this is a cool tune. If their B-side is this good, I should start buying their albums.

    Not my favorite Smiths track by a mile. I can't get past those chipmunk backing vocals. A terrible aesthetic choice. And the lyrics a little bit of Morissey doing a parody of himself. Almost cartoonishly clever with the walkman bit. So many better Smiths singles and songs. Take any track off of Hatful of Hollow. What Difference Does It Make. Or for a deep track, This Night Has Opened My Eyes.

      @@BR81-iv6lt Right on. Or Rusholme Ruffians. Every track on Meat Is Murder is a great. If I had to rank them, it'd be Hatful of Hollow (I prefer that as a sub for their debut), a tie between Meat Is Murder and Strangeways, the two 'greatest hits + new singles' albums Louder than Bombs and World Won't Listen, and Queen Is Dead dead last. Queen Is Dead is a very uneven album IMO. Frankly Mr. Shankly and Vicar in a Tutu exhibit Morissey's 'too cute by half' tendencies even more than Bigmouth.
