Mazda CX-5 beats Volvo XC40 and Audi Q3 in a new IIHS tougher side crash test

  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is introducing a new, tougher side crash test to address higher-speed crashes that continue to cause fatalities. In the first tests of 2020-21 vehicles, only one out of 20 small SUVs, the 2021 Mazda CX-5, earns a good rating.
    “We developed this new test because we suspected there was room for more progress, and these results confirm that,” IIHS President David Harkey says. “The good rating for the CX-5 shows that robust protection in a more severe side crash is achievable.”
    Nine vehicles earn acceptable ratings: the Audi Q3, Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4, Toyota Venza and Volvo XC40.
    Eight others - the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Compass, Jeep Renegade, Kia Sportage and Lincoln Corsair - earn marginal ratings. Two more, the Honda HR-V and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, receive poor ratings.
    All but one of the tested vehicles was a 2021 model. Mitsubishi skipped the 2021 model year for the Eclipse Cross, so the 2020 model was tested. With the exception of the Compass and the Tucson, the ratings carry over to 2022 models.
    To address those crashes, the updated side test uses a heavier barrier traveling at a higher speed to simulate the striking vehicle. The new barrier weighs 4,180 pounds - close to the weight of today’s midsize SUVs - and strikes the test vehicle at 37 mph, compared with a 3,300-pound barrier traveling at 31 mph in the original evaluation. Together, those two changes mean it involves 82 percent more energy.

    Big improvement for Mazda. Remember when the CX-5 got a Marginal for the surprise Small Overlap test in 2013?. All Volvos got a Good on that surprise test, even the XC90 which was still on the same structure from the 2006 model. More surprise tests tests,, IIHS, Volvo will show that they don't build their cars to just pass these simplistic tests. How about a test at a 30 degree angle with both cars moving. Oh wait! Volvo can do that, but the IIHS can't.

      Thanks I’m not the only one who thinks that way. These test don’t say nothing these days. Every car has 5 stars. A car that can’t get 5 stars in those test is just shit😅

      Mazda’s entire tested lineup has gotten top safety pick + for years, and on more than one occasion, the sole vehicle in the class to receive it.

      @@brytonmunro5270 Ever heard of the Volvo SIPS system? It moves the seat away from the side impact and crushes the center console. I'd like to see the measurements on the dummy. When Elon Musk compared a pole side impact crash video of the Volvo S60 and a Model 3 it was obvious that the Volvo S60 had more intrusion into cabin, but people who dug into the accelerative forces on both dummies showed the S60 dummy fared the best. Not to dis the CX-5. It did a great job here. But the CX-5 did fail the surprise Small Overlap crash test in 2013, like almost everyone else, except Volvo.

      @@brytonmunro5270 No it isn't. It shows that Volvo is not crash testing their cars to pass the few simplistic crash tests of the IIHS, NHTSA, and NCAP. Volvo had identified the Small Overlap crash as a very dangerous accident and had already built their cars to withstand it. No other car company had. The Volvo Safety Center crashes cars at all angles with both cars moving. No other car company, no other crash testing agency can do that. And Volvo has duplicated thousands of real world crashes in their Safety Center.
