As someone who has played Kuro 1 and Kuro 2, I'm so excited for its western release. I'm always curious what choices NISA will make with localization (how much are they going to neuter Aaron?), how will the English VA's be (Van's VA seems perfect and I wouldn't have believed Amalee would be the right choices for Agnes but everything I've heard so far has been a real surprise from other characters I know her from), and all that jazz. I will just say as well there are multiple queer characters in the Calvard arc and there's one quest in Kuro 1 / Daybreak that I think will really hit in a big way.

I was inititally concerned about Aaron when I saw the T rating, but after playing most of the demo and seeing how Van talks, I'm feeling much more confident they'll get Aaron right as well. Literally within the first 30 minutes, Van says "holy shit", "piece of shit" and "rat bastard", LOL

Rebirth trilogy is fantastic but can’t really say that about some of the others. Although a couple recent entries have been decent.

The series began in 2004, 2006 was Trails in the Sky 2. Good review, I laughed when you made fun of the name Spriggan. I'm glad that the Kuro arc is shying away from death less, the games don’t have to be a bloodbath but what's even the point of depicting a war if there's no stakes or tension because you know everyone is either going to survive or be revived? Minor request, but it would be nice if you could make more "dungeons ranked" videos, like the DQ4 one. Fun concept and it's easy for them to hold my interest since they're an original idea nobody has seen much.
I’m a new player to this series. Always wanted to the join series but the backlog would be insane. Excited to jump in here. Loved the demo. This year is so STACKED for jrpg’s man. Hope you have a good gaming year, David.

Thought the demo was pretty great. A fun start to the arc with more momentum then Falcom usually gives these games. Also had a great time figuring out the battle system. It's kind of a mix between the Cold Steel system and the Sepith Math from before so I was digging the possibilities.

I bought the game on Steam months ago, just waiting until july 5 when they'll add the translation, I could just play the fan translation, but with trails I like to talk with every NPC (multiples times if necessary). Really hope that the more serious tone is deliver, 3rd still have my fav main plot because of that
This got amazing! Now that all the tutorials are in, I can really get into the battles! I know what will go on! And then the prologue got me hooked. 😊

1- Did you know that the legend of heroes trails of cold steel 1 Angelica and Claire had an alternate outfit that never came out in the final version? Not only her 2 but also Rean had a outfit that was called Rean's Awakened Costume I could wear Rean in the ogre version, I have the images from the ps3 version.
2- The Legend of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel 1 When Rean uses the ogre version, he just says Now! in the fights, well, before that, P*rish said (The letter is E)
3- Did you know that Nihon Falcom modified 4 ost the legend of heroes trails of cold steel 1? If you didn't know, here are the osts and they are very good, too bad the final version didn't come out but thanks to someone who found in the game files, if you know who to listen to, just copy this:

Last dungeon you bought an accessory called Phantasmal Mirror, that serves to use Crow, Altina and Vita, what I didn't know is that Altina, Crow, Vita, Xeno, Leo, Rufus, McBurn, Bleublanc, Patrick, Viscount Arseid, Butler Klaus, Duvalie was playable at some point in history without the need for an accessory.
There was also a lost art that never came out.

I still haven't got to palying Legend of Heroes series. From what I have seen the series is worth the time so I hope I will be able to play the series before it buries me under all the new titles
This will be my first Trails game, the battle system looks great!
This series is really interesting to me but it seems impossible to find somewhere to start without just going to the very beginning. They all seem to flow into each other to some degree from what I see people say? Not sure if this trilogy is separate or not though, Ive felt relatively scared off from it.

How did you feel about reverie? I'm struggling to push through the cold steel arc but I'm hoping reverie is better because I like the protags and characters from first two arcs
@@Twizzlar i ONLY played cold steel, and out of order 😅 so a rough start. but loved reverie, i really liked the plot and is more focused! but yeah, cold steel was a lot of work to get through for me with long breaks between entries
Spriggan is a real creature from English folklore. Similar to how Arianrhod is a character from English myth (altho she is Welsh, as opposed to Cornish).

Finished both no spoiler. Kuro is the craziest darkest ride ever in the entire series. with huge lore bombs and most amazing cast since sky and azure. Kuro no kiseki 2 is much more different beast than the first one.

David, would you happen to know if any save data would come over from reverie or Cold Steel 4? I'm thinking this is the perfect time to transfer consoles from a switch to PS5. However I don't want to miss an opportunity to use save data.
No your fine in fact every NEW game in the series never really had Carry over from the previous games the only exception is the last one Hajimari/Reverie since it uses 51 party members from MOST of the previous games that's why if you have Cold Steel 3 and 4 Save Data + Save files from the 2 Crossbell games you CAN use those in Hajimari/Reverie for extra items.
That doesn't apply to this one.

This is the first Legend of Heroes game for me. I’ve played the demo and to me, it’s really slow and looks like polished PS3 graphics. I want to get into them, but I’m trying to understand the hype.

Gameplay here looks pretty fun. Just not sure if I can pick this one up considering my backlog is already bursting at the seams.
Still working my way through the series, waiting on discounts for To Zero. Series is like crack. At least From Zero had the courtesy not to end in a cliffhanger like Trails in the Sky 3rd did.
i haven't played the demo yet, but I've been a fan of the Legend of of Heroes games since the Sky FC came to Steam and I only found out about it by chance, because someone in a forum I frequented years ago brought it up. I had no idea what I was missing out on before.
Overall it looks pretty decent and it certainly has me a bit more hyped up than Reverie, but it feels like the combat gets unnecessarily more complicated with every game. Maybe it's because I haven't played it myself, but I don't get why they always try to reinvent something when they've had a pretty good formula on their hands for a few games now.
IMO it's a lot more fun this way. Epsecially since movement in battle doesn't take a turn.
Bandai Namco really needs to learn from Falcom when concerning the Tales series. For real, Falcom has released an entire storied saga on modern consoles here in the West. All of which are brimming with content I might add. Whereas Bamco won't even a few separate titles on modern consoles here that don't even have that much comparatively. No matter the reason, it's still pathetic from a company as big as them.

I was starting to get Trails fatigue, and I felt Reverie was a bunch of fluff that didn't really add to the overall plot of the series. I think this will be a nice new additional that I will enjoy, since it breaks away from a lot of the series tropes that started to weight down my enjoyment. Thanks for the preview David. I didn’t realise the demo was that long I didn’t like the action combat first but now I’m getting used to it. Not sure if I will play the full demo I play to many rpgs I will probably forget what happened when the game comes out haha 😅
Hi David! Just wanted to let you know that in JRPG Xbox news that both Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 just got added to Game Pass. Thought you might want to mention it on your next news video. It’s a good sign because the first one had been on Game Pass a while back but was taken off and is now back again - while the second one is on the platform for the first time.
I forgot to add - Octopath Traveler 2 isn’t just new to Game Pass, it’s new to Xbox. Previously only the first game had been ported to Xbox. I quoted the paragraph about it below.
Square has an announcement on their site now with all the details about new platforms including that they added new stuff in an update.
“To celebrate the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series being available on all current consoles and PC (Windows PC and STEAM®), Team Asano have added a free update to OCTOPATH TRAVELER II, including ‘Extra Battle’ mode which will become available after defeating the final boss in the final chapter. Do I need context from the other trails games or nah?
The game will explain everything you need to know. There may be a lot of countries and factions to keep straight if you're coming in fresh (because a lot of brand new ones are introduced on top of all the previous ones), but it shouldn't be too detrimental.
I don't know how i feel about the action combat. Hey David do u think it was fluid or is it kind of clunky? It's kind of hard to tell by the gameplay footage. Thanks!
I'd say it's a bit clunky. It's basically better field attacks. In the second game they actually let you use spells too, and you can get on field assists for extra damage if you time it right.

for this game and the sequels all the NORMAL ones are required to Platinum trophy the game the ones that start with EX are 100% OPTIONAL and are NOT required but even then it still takes at least 3 PLAYTHROUGHS to even complete EX ones.

Why in the world would they limit the switch of the demo by a whole chapter? Do they not have faith in how it runs or something
The Switch having limitation of demos is unfortunately on Nintendo's policy.
That and odds are it could possibly USE up most of the systems Hard Drive Storage space as well hence why chapter 1 isn't IN the Switch demo.
Do the item or exp differ depending on how you approach the battle action or turn base. What's the point of me wanting to switch between the two?
You can get far more experience bonuses from the turn based battles. The most efficient way to earn large exp from a single encounter is to start in action combat, earn the bonuses you can earn there, and then trigger the turn based combat afterwards to earn whatever bonuses you can.
That being said, it’s mostly just about giving players choice on how they want to play the game. The action combat is obviously simpler but commonly faster than doing a fight turn based. All major story battles use the turn-based system, though, so it’s worth learning all the little details.
@@Zakemaster thank you sir, I’m loving the demo so far, loved the other games before it. But this one feels like a huge step up.
Also like the others WITHOUT the shining pom items you'll never hit lv 99 in this one and LV 150 in Daybreak 2 and yes in both games the enemies highest levels are like lv 75 in Daybreak 1 and lv 95 to lv 100 in the 2nd one.
Odds are Kai/Kuro 3 WILL still require shining poms to max out your lvs IN that one as well.
Not just EXP but SEPITHs you get MORE dropped via turned based battles as well.
I still played it like you'd do it in cold steel/reverie except it can take more than one hit to stun them and then enter turn based combat to get turn advantage. Playing the whole game in action mode would take entirely too long since you cant use your crafts or most of your spells
and you can't USE items in action mode and yes its possible in Action mode TO die have HP drop to zero.

Calvard is more like the America of Zemuria. It's a melting pot of all cultures.
Calvard is based on Republican France. Likely well into the 20th century, but the world progresses so quickly compared to our own.
Erebonia is based on Imperial Germany under Bismarck.
Liberl is a based on Thailand (monarchy with active military coups) and a small-l liberal reimagining of Victorian Britain (strong female monarch, small country that drives technology forward, and a state church heavily inspired by both liberal elements of Catholicism and broad church Anglicanism).
Crossbell is based on Hong Kong.

and Basel is a town/city in this game based on the SAME named city in Switzerland about Altair City you really never actually got their in any GAME yet since you don't go their even in Kuro 2 ( the sequel) to this game in Japanese.
@@veghesther3204 You do go to both places...you don't stay in Altair long and you don't have the freedom to explore, but you do go there for a brief period of time for a quick chat with some familiar faces.
Well I don't really count that as a VISIT since theirs no subquests/Battles all you see are cutscenes in Altair city and that's it.

I honestly disagree this is probably the worst trails game that I've ever played worse than boundless trails, there's so many problems with the gameplay there's constant problems with the hit detection box dealing with weaker enemies, the characters were very bland the only one who was interesting was Van. van is absolutely the best main character so far because he's not a goody two-shoes nor is he a people pleaser he's a grown man who's easier to relate to he's a very mysterious man and it's intriguing but that's all the game has going for it I'm only going to keep playing the rest of the series because I love the story but it's absolutely for the best that the series is headed towards the end because it's starting to become boring the game was very repetitive after the first two hours of gameplay and now I'm just waiting for it to end.
Spriggan is also one of the greatest OVA ever made, I'm afraid to look into the netflix update though😅
I found the switch version to be very disappointing performance and graphically wise in handheld mode

After finishing the prologue, I am even more hyped for this game than before. Could've moved on to the first chapter, but I plan to buy on PC so I don't want to waste that much time having to replay it all later. Love the characters and the music, however I feel like the music is way too quiet and the voices are way too loud (but I feel like this has been a problem since CS3 and by extension Ys VIII). And YES, I really hope we're done with the predatory characters that are just shrugged off "Oh that's our Angie"...
The plan is to play Super Mario rpg & some of the backlog this summer.. And, save this one for my birthday in September

Well, Calvard has always been identified as a republic. And Sky also made a few comments on that and how the common folkd got into power. The easter part has always been a missconception since they always said there was a mix of cultures on the republic.

I need to disagree that this can be your "first Trails game", for the love of Christ, please play them in order, otherwise you will regret it. I have a theory that Zin and Walters arc what started from Sky will come to a close here and you should absolutely play Sky before, then you have Fie from Cold Steel being in Calvard and Renne what is present in literally every Trails game and what had an extremely amazing character arc and fid you saw Kai no Kiseki trailer? It's literally Cold Steel 4 and Reverie all over again maybe even crazier I can see literally EVERYONE joining, it will be a combination of all arcs to create one huge final.
Please play them in order, I know Kuro no Kiseki Trails Through Daybreak has nice visuals but you will regret it from a story standpoint.
Sorry to say but your theory is wrong, and yes, this game is the perfect jumping on point for people who might find the retro style of Sky too daunting to jump into at first. Unlike Cold Steel and Zero, it does not spoil anything about previous character's plotlines. It very much sticks to its own ground, even as far as the overarching plot goes. It's totally fine to play this game first and work your way back around. I assure you, it doesn't ruin anything.
@@saintfayde4438 Then when will they conclude their story arcs? It will happen at some point like with Estelle, Joshua and Renne in Zero. Also please stop with this, you know fully well that even "if" you can enjoy Daybreak as a stand alone game like you can enjoy Cold Steel 1 as a "stand alone game" once they connect previous arcs you will feel isolated and wonder what happened in previous games... Specially now that in Kai no Kiseki we will most likely face off the primordial nothingness moment the Grandmaster mentioned at the end of Cold Steel 4.
Also why is the 2D style so disliked? In my personal opinion Sky and Crossbell art style looks 20 times better than Cold Steel 1 and 2 and most people recommended Cold Steel 1 and 2 for is visuals... Yes is 3D but is ugly early 3D. I get it Cold Steel 3 looks much better, I also remember developers at Falcom saying that Cold Steel 3 was a good starting point, at this point any game is a good " starting point" why not start with Reverie it has a cool cover right? Riiigghhhtttt?
As for Kai/Kuro 3 that one I don't recommend playing EVEN after you beat Daybreak 1 and 2 without playing the Previous 10 games.

This is clearly another Cold Steel situation, where you can play Cold Steel 1 and maybe 2 besides the "ending" without playing the other games but after Cold Steel 2 with the 3rd game onwards, you should have absolutely played the other games.
@@Official_RetroMania Why do you have a hard time understanding that games that dated aren't for everyone and can be difficult for people to get into? Not everyone is like you. Many fans of this series began with Cold Steel because it was more appealing. Then when they fell in love with the story, they set their preferences aside and gave the older games a chance. You really need to stop being elitest and thinking your way is the only way. This game is fine. I'm not telling people to go play kuro 2 and kai because those games aren't out yet globally for a few more years anyways, and if they get hooked on Kuro 1 then they'll undoubtedly go back and play the others to fill the gap between releases. I get that you want people to experience the story "properly" but you really need to settle down. This is nowhere near as bad as the people telling others to start at Zero and ruining the best plotline of the series...
7:40 at least there is a really interesting LGBTQ side quest in this game. I was really surprised by how they handle this subject quite well (if we compare with previous trails games or other jrpg). It's probably because of how Calvard is more an open minded country. I mean, the Capital Edith is clearly based on Paris (France). :)
This is true. Falcom clearly knew this especially since Liberl had the whole gender roles being broken whereas Erebonia and Crossbell were more traditional/dated in views of men and women.
