LYRICS:
We are the ghosts of the midway, the beasts of the alley.
We are the living dead living in your nightmares.
Scraping ourselves from the earth, living as though we are dirt.
Staring like you’ve seen a ghost.
The lowest of the low with nowhere to go.
Back from the dead, now we’re groveling at your feet.
Handcuffed for lying our heads as we’re withering in the streets. Fighting for your attention.
Begging for your generosity.
Looking up just to see you turn your cheek on me.
You walk on by like I’m invisible.
All I want is to be seen as an equal.
We fought your battles, and we built your homes.
Sorry if I disturbed you.
I just wish we could live like you do.
Even in our most beautiful days it’s dark.
Just look at the world around you.
There’s a consequence for what we do.
Pass judgment on me as you walk.
Picture perfect ain’t my obsession.
You can’t sum up my life from a first impression.
Learn your lesson.
Act like you know me, but do you even know yourself?
When you got nothin’, you got nothin’ to lose.
I may have no one else to blame, but listen to me.
You and I, we were once the same.
YOU AND I, WE WERE ONCE THE SAME.

This song, these lyrics, and this message are why this kind of music is the best in the world.

Coming from a combat veteran, this is a very powerful and moving song. Again, ABR shows that they are an incredibly talented band. It hurts me to see my brothers having to suffer on the streets. Together we fought for the safety and freedom for the people Of this beautiful country, and a lot of us are so easily disposed of. You see them sitting on streets, on corners, begging for any kind of help they can get and the majority of you avoid them taking for granted that you're free because of the sacrifices they made. And you turn your backs to them. I lost my leg from the knee down, and I count my blessings everyday because the VA is good to me and a lot of men and women lost so much more than a leg. I donate a lot of my free time to helping my brothers and sisters. Because you all may have turned your backs on us, but we'll never turn our backs on each other.. or you. I'm not saying I'm a saint because the good Lord knows I'm not. But what I am trying to say is that you guys need to remember what they've done for you. Open your hearts people. Because something could happen to you and next thing you know you're in the same situation. But please, tell me, if you were homeless, starving, and cold and everyone avoided you like you were a freak or monster.. how would that make you feel? would it not break your heart?
It does.
People make assumptions.
As a struggling vet
The work of Bernie Sander over the decades fighting to improve the VA and ending the wars that destroy us for the profits of the weapons manufacturers is the reason I support him
End homelessness
End the murderous Insurance machine
For all of us

I don't know if it's just me... but I feel like the drummer is getting more attention in these videos, and I love it.
+DaleOfHope This is because it's not the drummer, its THE drummer !! If you don't know him and are interested in drums, be sure to check his videos !! His name's Matt Greiner, he did a playthrough of this song on Zildjian's channel its soooo good.
+César Tresca Yep,this guy is INSANELY talented,I had the chance to actually meet the entire band in person last winter...I'll remember it for my entire life, and they are really nice individuals!I told the drummer he was the main reason I started playing drums,he shook my hand and gave me hug while giving me the most sincere and appreciative "thank you" you can think of.I'm all for free music on the internet and all,but this and Parkway Drive are the only 2 bands whom I actually buy their albums :P DO IT TOO!!
***** To each his own! I prefer Matt Greiner for his creativity. But I really Like Barker !
+Philip Watson As a drummer myself, I'm obligated to say "it's irrelevant because it's two different styles of music." But Matt is seriously skilled, so much more than I've seen from Travis.
+Philip Watson Have you seen Matt Griener's videos? I don't want to call Travis a crap drummer, but the comparison is pretty obvious. Matt has more skills.
Was really hoping to see Jeremy jam out with august burns red..
+timmy eshelman same.. still a good song though!
No doubt.
i didnt know what the song was actually about until i read the rolling Stones review of the video.
But like i said, i was just hoping to see jeremy.
Still really cool none the less.
+timmy eshelman aaaaand here we are...
I was so ready to see Jeremy appear...
+Kyle Peterson yup! i was alll ready for it.
then a picture flashes and i was like "oh, okay then..."
I'm a city bus driver, and I see a lot of people that are down and out every workday. This song always reminds me to try to have humility and show grace to everyone, all the time.
Not a lot of songs have an impact like that. This song actually has made the world better, even if by just a little bit.
Amen Brother
This could happen to any of us. If you're lucky enough to have it, better take care of it and appreciate things. Have a great day 😀
is it bad I tear up at the last chorus? I mean it touches my soul
Fucking still tho
Me too...
naw mate to this day tht ending makes me cry the most manly of tears lol
tearing up now man...every...single...time
i’ll tear up with you
In case anyone was wondering, Jeremy McKinnon played a ghost in this video.
Clever.
+ERICX909 Specifically which one and at what time?
Oh I get it lol cuz his career is dead

Jason Roque Far from dead man. ADTR is on fire right now can't wait to hear some new stuff
This is the most badass ABR has looked in a music video since Empire.
So true
Still love the Empire video more than anything. There was so much power into it.
Idk they looked pretty badass in the Composure video.
+Joe Pontiac Shout out to Drew Russ!
I think balloons are brutal. Meddler has a good video of you like balloons being brutal.
Damn, I wanna cry now. The look on that dudes face at the end gave me feels. Such a beautiful song, video, and overall moral.
+Corban T. Me too....damn onions ;_;
+Corban T. have the same feelings
+Corban T. That last line... "You and I, we were once the same".... ;-;
+Corban T. Definitely the most powerful video they've created.
+Corban T. I know that feeling. I won't lie, I cry every time I watch this video and see the look on his face. This video really makes me want to help.
Is it just me that finds 4:00 onward absolutely perfect?
My fav part of the song. Also the acting by the homeless man brought a tear to my eye.
more than perfect.
Gives me chills..
Aye do you have the king's amulet i gave you like 5 centuries ago?
wow. Yeah, almost the only reason I listen to the song. So good.
From when Jeremy's verse comes in until the end really chokes me up, because it can apply to far more than just homelessness, but to mental health, disease, and of course poverty. As someone that's battled with depression since I was about 6, the last bit of this song really hits heavy. "Act like you know me, but do you even know yourself? When you got nothin' you got nothin' to lose. I may have no one else to blame, but listen to me. You and I, we were once the same". And the way Jeremy's voice harmonizes in the last few lines is almost haunting. I hope everyone is hanging in there, no matter what "front" your battle may be taking place on, keep on hanging on. Much love.
Fact!
I just wrote an 8 page essay on this song for school..... so worth it.
What grade did you get? Deserve a hundred because of the topic alone.
I wanna read that lol
Can we read your essay? 😅
Can we read pls
I wanna read this essay
I'm an Iraq Combat Veteran.. PTSD consumes you and this song, especially the last lines.. Is amazingly accurate.. ABR has matured lyrically more than any other band to be able to reach out and impact people on such a serious topic.. Well done boys.. Well done.. Cheers
+Nicholas Bastien Thanks for your service man.
+Nicholas Bastien Bless you sir. One of my job is helping disabled war vets, everyday I learn something new.
+Nicholas Bastien I work in a rehabilitation clinic where we treat people with Opiate dependency. A lot are veterans that have served in their past. Its a great feeling to help those that fought for us. Thank you for your service.
Thank you for serving and protecting, sir (:
My heart goes out to you and you fellow soldiers for being selfless in protecting our country, our way of life, and keeping everyone safe and I want to say my heart also goes out to your fellow soldiers who were unfortunate to have to live like this and ones that didn't make it back to see the end of the story and to me this makes me upset that how poorly we treat you when you get back "home"
ABR - "Look at this really cool video we made with a great message and stuff"
Everyone else - "Why is Jeremy not in this?! >:("
Cuz Jeremy played a ghost in this video.
Ya die hard fans for that guy mess it all up lol just enjoy the music people!
+Scarreh you gotta admit it was a little underwhelming
Lucas Garibaldi Oh heck yea i'll give you that haha, but still, always a bit sad to see everyone forget about the actual band whenever someone is feautured
i don't knw and don't care who Jeremy is.. For me Its all abt ABR!!
The guitarist is incredible. Same with the drummer
If a picture is worth a thousand words than that man's face at 4:30 is worth ten thousand. My God you can just see his pain and his loneliness written on his face. That coupled with this amazing outro is enough to make anyone tear up.

I am not a veteran, but i have spent many times homeless with my veteran friends. This epidemic is no joke. As a man ex homeless person, just to talk and look us in the eye makes a world of difference. You feel subhuman.

This song is powerful in sound and in meaning. Really good message.
One of the the most powerful goosebumping songs ive ever heard
It’s extra goosebumpy when you watch the video too.
As a veteran, I watched this all the way through for the first time and this hits hard... I know the struggle everyday for some of us, veteran or not, is very real. Keep holding on, though. There is light at the end. God bless you all.
Every time I see a homeless vet asking for help, I come back to this song. We owe them so much more. Today I gave one what little cash I had in pocket. The gratitude he showed almost brought me to tears
Who can dislike this?
only some trolls
+Mau Tramúns People who didn't realize they were once the same.
+Mau Tramúns Metal elitists I suppose...
+Zachary Green this album was kind of a digression of their sound compared to rescue and restore
+Spencer Redding I still enjoy it. I just love how ABR has evolved over the years. On top of that, I feel that they are all excellent musicians and perform great live.
The scene at the end with the homeless man really fucking kills me. Homeless people who look sad and hopeless always make me go sentimental..
Ikr dang im just thinking in life right now .-. life awhat a big word..
And then what? You walk on by, like they're invisiblllle...
Samuel Omloop it’s all good acting
James D when you live in a shithole city like San Francisco, yes you do. You walk the fuck on by. Scared of bums, I’m hobophobic! So what! aaaaaah aaaah aaaaah! 🎶
James D I saw one with one a few days ago with their pants leg rolled up displaying a leg with half a dozen holes rotting out of it, using the diseased rotting leg as a prop to get more change. Bro, this change ain’t gonna help you. You need to get that shit amputated at SF general hospital!
Untreated MRSA infection or flesh eating bacteria? Who knows!
The final minute of this song always gets to me. My grandfather was a homeless vet who served his country well. Thank you to all our service men and women. The backbone of our great nation
August Burns Red always has one or two tracks that does this thing to me when they play
Stabs me right in the middle of the heart piercing my soul
I try to hold back the tears...
Im not even American, Im Spanish but knowing there are people on the streets who fought for the life you're now living is sad, incredible song as usual in ABR!
No words for that masterpiece
"I may have no one else to blame, but listen to me, You and I were once the same" that would make a nice tattoo :P
This is what they need to play at churches. Would blow the roof off every Sunday morning.
jmcsquared18 could you imagine
jmcsquared18 and the pastor starts head banging hahaha
Amen
Unfortunately too many fake "Christians" don't want to hear about stuff like this.
This is an important topic that Christians should acknowledge and address, but this kind of music simply doesn't work for collective church worship. If you actually think it through, that much should be obvious.
But a song like this could instead be a catalyst for discussion among believers--maybe not in a sermon but at least through conversations within and outside church. That's a more realistic role that this song can fulfill.

That last chorus will always be absolute flames
This hit me right in the feels man, it's crazy how people sacrifice their lives at home and put their lives at risk for our protection and we receive those that have fought for us like trash. Vets are one of the most under appreciated people in this country which is so ass backwards, they should be the most looked up to people around they should be treated like royalty. You don't need to be a super patriot, I know I'm not, but I am a decent human and so are they. Don't just support our troops, Support our vets ✊🏽
Right on brother.
Happy veterans day everyone
+TheEnlightenShadow This should have way more than 16 up votes ^^^^
Straight up TRUTH from a VET!
Not American, but frankly I don't give a fk about veterans or soldiers and people's obsessiveness with war, I wish people (and especially americans) would stop trying to start wars every chance they get and we would have more peace. Soldiers SHOULD be looked down on, then maybe less people will be willing to throw their lives away like that and we would have fewer wars. Also to America: stop throwing away so much money on your military and start working on your education and healthcare you fkin neanderthals.
9 or 10 years. However many damn years it's been since jake has joined. This is the most consistent band ever. And of course JB and Matt destroy as always.
I could sit and listen to a whole album of just Matt's tracks isolated. Unreal.
+ProtusMose I don't know if you've seen them live but Matt is amazing live. They all are.
Next month, I finally get to see them for the first time. :D
+ProtusMose They are awesome. I've seen them twice and Matt usually does a drum solo or two in between songs.
Matt is such a savage I can't....
“Even in our most beautiful days it’s dark” It felt like I took a knife to the heart when he said that.

That's fucking epic. Would love to sit down with Matt Greiner and get some pro tips. Awesome story man
song gives me chills. if only the rest of America could give to the less fortunate. doesnt need to be money or food just attention and show that they are people like you and me.

Dustin's two lines always kill me to hear. He did so well both with the scream and acting it out. Heart wrenching words.

Jay Ward Right........you're talking about Michael. I said "Jake here" because the lead singer to August Burns Red is named........wait for it............Jake.
Didn't know, I am not very familiar with this band.
That breakdown was amazing.
7 years later, this song/video still destroys me every time. Great work boys! This is heartwrenching, but is a masterpiece!
Being in the Military this song really chokes me up sometimes.
I have never been in the mitary, and I generally don't support military action in any form. And despite all that, this video about brings me to tears. It's an extremely potent message that should hit home with just about anyone who's ever ignored a homeless person on the street.
moxshyfter I think a lot of people are very miss informed about the military in most aspects. At the end of the day, we are just people doing what we can in the hopes that its for the greater good. What corrupt politicians gain from our hard work is irrelevant to our struggles.
Oh I understand. No offense or ill will intended at all. I just wish the world over settled their problems without guns and bombs in the first place, that's all.
+moxshyfter Unfortunately the world doesn't work like that. At least most countries are allies these days. It's mostly primitive countries that still don't have basic human rights.
Sending my love to you man
Holy Fuck that drop into the breakdown at 3:35 gives me chills every time
Its so good.
This part is just so strong, i love it
I wasn't even paying attention to the music video until towards the end when the homeless man and "You and I, we were once the same" part came and i almost teared, damn... Help a brother out whenever you see someone in need like that, you don't know what led them to the way they're living now.
This is what music is all about. This song is an absolute masterpiece both lyrically and musically. One of the better metal core pieces ever imo.
Been my favorite band well over a decade. I have never heard a song by them that was anything short of a masterpiece. Definitely never heard a band that has made this much consistently amazing music 🖤🖤🖤
I am a proud recovered alcoholic and opioid addict. I spent years fighting to get & stay off the streets. I've housed for 6 years, off drugs for about 4 and off alcohol for about 16 months.
This is a powerful because of how true it is. I remember sitting under a bridge wondering how the hell I got there.
Beforehand I made $120,000/year but over time the drugs took over.
It was only through Christ Jesus' love and Grace that I am here. And that I am sober.
People don't want to think about how fast you can end up on the streets. Alot of successful men end up on the streets after their wife divorces them. Or from a medical emergency.
That entire last section of the song is so powerful man
NOOOO , they had to wait until Jeremy was available for this video xd, anyway i love it. Such a sick song omg, my favorite of the album and band
+Nirv Hergom i was he singing instead of playing as a ghost.
+Metalcore Michael hahahaha awesome
i meant i WISH he was singing
This is a really sick song and this is my first song I listened to from this band, nice first impression ABR 👏
Sometimes the singer Jake reminds me of Cesaro from WWE.
Sometimes not. But sometimes he does.
Lennyficate jetzt wo du es sagst :D
Especially on RUSEV DAY!!!!!
Als wenn du jetzt sogar noch dieselbe Musik wie ich hörst Lenny xD
Don't disrespect Cesaro like that

This song brings me to tears. Every time
I cried the 1st time i heard the song subtitled, what a beautiful song. Help the homeless, every gran of sand helps if we all do it.
Salutes from Perú(South America), god bless you all
"You think you know me, but do you even know yourself?" could be the greatest ABR lyric of all time
This should have been the song up for a grammy....
Its way better than any Grammy could try and validate!
xTheUnknownTruthx abr already being nominee in grammy if not by mistake.
first I read granny
The chorus is the same as as i lay dying parallels
You ever have a song that the instrumentals speak to you on such a deep level, that it sounds/feels like it's describing your life at the moment in a beautifully somber way? That's this song for me haha
I was expecting Jeremy Mckinnon to be in the music video for some reason haha. Understandable that he's probably really busy and stuff. Still awesome song and video though!
if he was in the video then it will lose the whole point of the song a it would be awkward for him to appeared on one scene
+Hansol Hansollll good to see you on some ABR ;)
+Hansol hey Hansol I love you! keep burnin shit
+Ian REACTS kinda like in fear in faith's video of "the road to hell" when Craig Owens randomly comes in lmao
+Hansol he must be busy shooting his film clips with adtr and their new album
In my humble opinion this is far from their heaviest song musically, but it could be their most complete song.. And should be considered a master peice in the rock and it's subgenre world.
Back burner seems a tad more heavy imo.
Powerful stuff man. Love helping the needy! Spread the love people!
that was such a killer video! can't wait to hear this live!
+Kevin Corkran I heard it live last week, and they were amazing, you have no idea how they sound live on this song :P
its been years since this dropped and the message is still relevent and sings louder than ever. love the message, love you guys for talking about a subject like this.
the guitar tones during the bridge of the song. This band is perfect. Dang!
Grew up around military, and continue to work among military folks; this was my first ABR track, and it still brings me to tears every time I hear it even after all these years.
I can't believe how good this actually is; I've replayed it like 50 times and I can't get over the Jeremy McKinnon part!
This is the reason I really love metalcore stuff, the lyrics are about us or they are about things we can see on our lives everyday
Even though i don't listen to this music often, Matt Greiner impresses me with his unique style of drumming. Very moving and indepth song, Brilliant!
And I'm reminded why August Burns Red still sets the standard!
the work of creating the choirs at the end, engineeringly speaking, is an art…..
Damn! The feels man, the feels!
"You and I were once the same."
-2019! Still standing strong!
The TONE at the beginning UGH!!!!
The message in this song is just incredibly strong. Such a masterpiece!
I'm here in 2020.... and damn right I will still be here in 2030.
If ABR started using more cleans in their choruses, like Jeremys Vocals here, they would probably be one of the biggest Metalcore acts in the world right now, with the added exposure it would probably give. Not that i want them to "soften up", but they really deserve more attention
heavy bands like this with awesome cleans are the best bands in my opinion
Then I hope you know the band Bury Tomorrow! One of the best mixtures of cleans and screams! Godly riffs and breakdowns just like ABR!
TDWP!!!!
it's funny how people think adding clean vocals to this kind of heavy music is considered as being "soften up"
Periphery?
As a Vet this video hits home & hits hard!!
You and I, we were once the same. But listen to me.....
Thank you for your service, and for giving me the opportunity to keep enjoying such beautiful and amazing music, and jam on brother you deserve the best. !!!!
August Burns Red
4:00-4:47 is what really gets me emotional. Just the lyrics, the vocals, even the instrumentals are all very sad.
Leora - actually makes me tear up a lot despite still all the chaos in the background
tears formed in my eyes at the end. I pray you guys never stop making music. It's real. Too many bands out there just write generic lyrics and sells albums left and right, but you guys have heart. God bless you and know that you moved me with this.
Reading those lyrics and watching the vid with old man (war veteran) makes me want to cry outloud.. Damn.. I feel sad :(
I really don't understand: whenever you find a very nice metal song, after some time you find another one that touches you more else. Music ... as addictable as a drug. Thanks for the song. 4:00 - 4:47🥰
I never realized how impactful this song could be. Id never seen the music video today and I'm glad there are people out there that try to help the world rather than hurt it. ABR sings about the importance of life rather than doing drugs, having sex, and "Living life" No they actually tell you how you should live your life!
I'm late on this but Jeremy McKinnon can become a permanent fixture in this band imo
2:21 absolutely one of my favorite breakdowns/riffs of all time. It's just so...heavy. This whole song is excellent, one of ABR's best in my opinion.
I forgot how great this song is. That guitar riff at the beginning is just awesome.
That breakdown after the part where Jeremy sings is still the filthiest metalcore breakdown I have ever heard.
Is it normal that I Burst into tears watching this video? cause now I can't stop crying.
+Fabiola Davila You're not the only one.:'(
+Fabiola Davila You're not alone.
I did to. It’s a true but horrible message. These people deserve better than what we give them
Snow flakes.
It always makes me cry when I watch
The line You and I were Once the Same always hits me hard and close to home.
I get goose bumps every time I listen to/watch this.
This is THE Heaviest band ive ever seen live, Im not sure anything will beat the experience i had when I saw them on tour with In Hearts Wake, (I went for IHW and was blown away by ABR)
Every single member in this band has honed each of their crafts masterfully.
So fucking true brother well said.
