1993 Phoenix Suns | The Best NBA Teams to Never Win a Title

- We are on the fourth episode of this series and we have yet to go back to the glory years of the NBA 90s. So today we are going back in time to before we were even born to look at the 1993 Phoenix Suns. The Suns in the early 90s had some solid teams winning 50+ games in 4 straight seasons, but did not become a legit contender until they traded for Charles Barkley in the summer of 92. During his first season in Phoenix Barkley won MVP and led the Suns to the NBA finals.

The irony of that "we need a Giannis" line 😂
I was just about to say that 😂
Lolsss
If the Hornet's announcers had a RUclips channel
HUM-DIDDLY-DEEEEE!!!!!
I live in Phoenix and this city threw this team a parade even though they lost in the finals. That's how much that team is beloved here in Phoenix.
I’m praying they can actually win it all this year I love this team
someday we will win a ring brother... someday...
Not this year sadly 😢@mikethepublisher7910
Our team has such a rich history. Multiple MVP's, 3 NBA Finals and 10 Western Conference Finals appearances. We just need to win a championship to seal the deal.
Yeah, I think the Suns have to have the most illustrious franchise without a chip in the NBA
@@DrooMightyThem or the jazz
@@chadickusvonmaximus4067Yeah, but they have 1 MVP, A very good duo, 2 finals appearances, and 6 wcf appearances. The numbers are in the Suns favor, but the Jazz duo does make it a close call. At least they aren’t the Hornets though.
Part of the reason that Barkley got traded for so little is because he made himself a massive headache for the Sixers at the time. Like, not quite the level of headache Kyrie was to the Nets at the beginning of 22-23, but close. He hated absolutely everybody, and absolutely everybody hated him. And he constantly badmouthed the Sixers to the media. It wasn’t necessarily that they traded him for so little, it was that that was probably the best available offer at the time that wasn’t *only* picks (and they thought they could still contend).
Barkley is a respected elder statesman now, but as a young guy he was a hothead.
Yeah--everyone just wanted to cut their losses. Would have gotten way worse if they held out for a better deal. They wanted to get him out of there.
Which is funny cause the sixers made him his own statue. It's outside the practice facility but it's still a statue lol
Because the Sixers sucked at putting a team around him. He got tired of losing in the first/second round of the playoffs.
@@acnicodemus4734Chuck was PISSED when the Sixers dealt away the first overall pick in 85/86, where they could’ve gotten Brad Daugherty
I watched the triple overtime game in 1993, there was an astonishing amount of bricks. I never thought I’d witness MJ missing 13 shots in a row
and noone talks about that. if lebron did that you know what would happen
@@machinesports6 I can hear it now " lebron a choker he will never win another championship
Because Jordan won and had 40 ppg. Lebron choked while loosing and getting outscored by Jason Terry. You LBJ stans will never shut up comparing your overrated LeBron to Jordan. Just leave it!
@machinesports6 fr, all the MJ mega fans would say "Lebron is a choker, he'll never win by himself"
Lebron missed 19 straight 3s these last playoffs
I remember 15-year old myself just discovering NBA (I'm from Europe), staying up late at night, rooting for the Suns to beat MJ in the finals.
Only 1 home game was won the whole 93 Finals. Always crazy whenever that happens, home court didn't mean a damn thing!
Also, the Bulls were getting outscored in the 4th quarter of game 6 19-9 before that Paxson 3. They were having a horrible finish, but they did JUST enough to win, so nobody remembers that lol.
Jordan was the only one to score in the 4th until that Paxson 3.
I’m always reminded just how much of an amazing player Chuck was. Like it’s a running gag how he never won a ring, but it’s kinda of hard when you’re playing in the same era as one of the greatest players ever (top 2, personally #1) whose part of one of greatest teams ever
i know y’all get comments like this all the time, but y’all’s commentary is so satisfying and the way you guys edit is so satisfying, keep up the good work ‼️
there are so many NBA legends walking around ringless because of this man named Michael Jordan
Charles Barkley, Karl Malone, Patrick Ewing, Reggie Miller, and Shawn Kemp.
@@damonsonnier34Miller and Ewing and Malone lost in the Finals to teams Jordan wasn't on
@@FuShengAlex I still think that the Knicks would have lost against the Suns in 1993, and I also think that the Pacers would have lost against the Jazz in 1998.
@@FuShengAlex In fact, here are all of the alternate Finals that would have taken place without Michael Jordan in the league.

I was alive back then lol. As a lifelong 76ers fan, this is still talked about as probably the worst trade in Philly sports history.
1:30 Oh boy, what did the Bucks need right now? A Lillard.
Also, Sir Charles, the Round Mound of Rebound, despite not winning a ring has already sealed a legacy as one of the best players in NBA history. He really went face-to-face with Prime MJ, huge respect
I think you missed a funny detail at those finals...
Phill Jackon, supposedly, said he wanted the game 5 to be over fast, so he could watch a Grateful Deadful show.
One Sun's player was interviewed after the win and, basically, said that the team saved Phill from a Grateful Dead show.
Finally a channel that talks about arguably the best suns team in history
Ok lets just pretend the 2018 Suns don't exist
@@thunderin4 why would I bring them up
Jim Paxson, John Paxon's evil twin brother
Older brother, not twin
Never seen sir charles play but hearing people say he aint a great because he didnt win a ring irks me so much. For mj to have his best finals series to beat him has got to mean something. It may have been a 6 game series but 3-4 of those ggames were decided by 8-9 points or less.
I wish i couldve seen prime barkley man.
Chuck was a beast in his prime. People tend to just think of him on Inside the NBA. Not remembering that he was the MVP of the Deam Team.
Great teams to never win a title theme is amazing, I love watching these type of videos and I can’t get enough of it, keep up these entertaining videos
I wonder how many franchises had arguably their best lineups in the 90's and damn near every year Jordan was just like "Nah"
I think you had the 1990's confused with the 1980's. There were alot of mediocre players and teams in the 1990's
@@melvynsngltn27 Shaq, David, Hakeem, Patrick, Reggie, Dikembe, Alonzo and so on plays in the 90s. There are mediocre teams and players in every era. Even in this era there are plenty of "mediocre" players.
Basically every team except for the Rockets. Arguably, I thought the Blazers in 1991 (63-19) were better than 92 (57-25) Also, the Lakers in 1998 (61-21) were a better team than 91 (58-24).
@@melvynsngltn27
Right on Mel! The 93 Suns weren't no one of the best teams never to win a title. They were VERY fortunate to have beaten that scrub Lakers team in the 1st round
Hmmm
92 Blazers
93 Knicks
93 Suns
96 Magic
96 Sonics
97 & 98 Jazz
98 Pacers
If you only count up until that time
92 Cavs
97 Heat
The young guys hosting this cast just don't know how great these old school players were especially when they weren't even born at that time
Really good video! Personally I think it's great that Phoenix loved their team enough to give them a parade anyway. I mean, I'm sure the team wouldn't want to go through with it, that'd be embarrassing as hell, but it's nice when your hometown doesn't throw you under the bus for losing.
Honestly surprised with this one. I figured since you guys prefaced that you weren't alive at the time, and that I've already seen a video with a similar premise from someone who was, this would be the same sort of video, but yours had a lot of awesome stuff in it that I hadn't seen! That interview with the coach in the first round was great!
Charles Barkley, Kevin Johnson, Dan Majerle, Tom Chambers, Mark West, Cedrick Ceballos, Richard Dumas, Danny Ainge, etc.
That is my favorite finals I have ever watched. I had the Charles Barkley shoes from that year.
Dan was a great player on the defense to say he wasn’t a defensive stopper is cray cray
That dame and giannis bit aged like fine wine
Wasn't a big Suns fan but have to admit they were a good team.Charles Barkley in the paint, decent mid range, good rebounder for his size,Kevin Johnson a great penetrator, good midrange shooter,Cedric Ceballos scored near the basket during those times and Dan Majerle one of the original deep 3 point shooters, who sometimes scored in the paint.
Good job boys ..
I can tell you from watching them those Sun's were very good .
Dumas was a great young player.
After my Bulls won the 1st 2 in Phoenix everyone thought it would be a sweep..
They had like 6 players that can give you 20+ points any night
1993 Suns are my favorite team of all time. I resented MJ for years after thw finals. 20 something fans have no idea how unstoppable Barkley was. To give you context Barkley was MVP and leading scorer of the Dream Team which was very competitive amongst the players on the team. Also we all know how competitive Jordan was. Dude didnt want to take a backseat at anything. Barkley was the fastest forward in the league with the power to dominate any center in the league. Unfortunately Sir Charles was never the same after a back injury in 1994.
Ya'll upload nothing but bangers‼You guys need more recognition💪🏾
I don't think I've ever seen the losing finals team get a parade anyway before.
Gave the city the Jerry West treatment lmao
The Cleveland Browns got a parade for going 0-16
It was done by a few teams in the past and also in other sports. The '82 Milwaukee Brewers , 1990 Buffalo Bills, 1994 San Diego Chargers, etc
You’re on a HEATER recently! So much content, not a miss in sight
Easily became my favorite basketball channel on all platforms. Been subscribed for awhile now, great vid! (yet again)
Frickin love the content, keep it up. So excited for the next video!!!
Love this series from you guys!
I remember this game like it was yesterday. When I seen john paxson open i was hoping no one seen.
They should have won the NBA title in the following years, in 1994 and 1995. But, choked 3-1 series leads to the Rockets in the playoffs, back to back years. Houston went on to win NBA titles both years.
Wow, you said we werent even alive back then? LOL Dang you making a lot of us feel old! How old are you? I was in my teens, early adulthood during the '90s.
You guys should look at the 98 pacers next. Took the bulls to 7 in the ecf
I agree
Youre right it was one of the best finals games ever but the best waa 1976 celtics suns game 5.
Watching this after Dame just got traded to the Bucks
your videos so good it’s crazy how subscribers yall have awesome being here before the blow up
I'm waiting for Spurs 2017 and 2016.
Warriors had the headlines but Spurs were right there in 2016
2017 we know what happened
Y'all said y'all wasn't born yet. I was lol and I have to say y'all did a great job. Barkley had a famous quote after game 5 that is hilarious. You could a lot of teams during the Jordan era. Knicks, Pacers, Cavs, and that's just the east. Obviously Utah is a must and Portland. In the beginning of the 91-92 season, Portland was a favorite to win that year and the second team was Cleveland. Guess they we're wrong lol.
You should do a video on how bad those laker championship teams were in the early 2000s. Besides shaq and Kobe they had no one. Fisher was their #3 scorer. Rick Fox and Robert Horry was their next best players who couldn’t average 10 points a game for their career
The only channel that I'll watch every single video from
Another high quality video!
Big fan of y’all’s work - sound eerily similar to some of the guys at The Athletic lol. Appreciate the wall-to-wall NBA content, would love to see y’all collaborate with Secret Base
Been waiting for a new vid in this series
Barkley grabbed 33 rebounds in his first game as a Rocket and he did it against the Sun's in Phoenix.
“That was my first game in Phoenix. They had no chance that night.” - Charles Barkley
@@damonsonnier34 yeah I remember watching that game while my younger brother was in his room... at halftime I went to get my brother and was like "bro Barkley is gonna get 40 rebounds tonight!"... Barkley as a Rocket was great for us, he was still doing crazy stuff like grabbing a defensive board and throwing the down court pass for a lay up all in one jump
@@hakeemolajuwon4352 He scored 20 points in that game as well. I was still mad that the Rockets traded away both Sam Cassell and Robert Horry to get Barkley, but he was the key to beating the Sonics in the Semi Finals.
@@hakeemolajuwon4352
Chuck was awful at everything except for rebounding in Houston. It was painful to watch him on offense with his explosiveness all but gone. He would eat up like 8-10 seconds of the shotclock on every possession backing someone down (he and Mark Jackson were the main reason they implemented that 5 second rule).
And he was easily exploitable on defense too. See the fateful Utah series 😢
@@FuShengAlex Yeah, I remember the matchup between Barkley and Karl Malone was not close during that series. The Rockets also lost a huge portion of their 3 point shooting, because they had to trade away both Sam Cassell and Robert Horry to get Barkley.
My favorite team during the day back then
In the mid 90s, there was a weird Bermuda triangle. The Suns couldn't beat the Rockets but could beat the Supersonics, the Rockets couldn't beat the Supersonics but could beat the Suns and the Supersonics couldn't beat the Suns but could beat the Rockets.
You guys in my opinion have good chemistry !!!
Suns ran into the GOAT
This was the first finals I watched. Started watching around that time. Lifelong Cavs fan since then too.
What do you think about LeBron ?
@@macougo119 well I'm grateful for him bringing us a championship. Cleveland in general needed a win like that. Was irked when he left the first time. I understood he realized that he couldn't win how things were. He needed to prove himself as a champion to attract any star power to Cleveland. Plus it definitely helped they tanked those 4 years and got Kyrie and was able to trade Wiggins for Love. Also I appreciate all the charity he does for Akron. I'm originally from Akron. Even born at the same hospital as him and Steph Curry lol
So I think he's a great businessman, charitable and Overall one of the best athletes we've seen in sports in general.
But I do place Jordan above him in the goat discussion. I'm not a LeBron stan. But I can appreciate everything he's accomplished and has done for the NBA as well as the championship he brought to us.
@@necromora666 Love this response
“Maybe this year we’ll see”

93 suns were to me the original splash bros they were the first team to really come out with a high powered 3 pt shooting offense.
I laughed so hard when donkey showed up. Smashed that like button ofc
Goated Videos fr
"Durant, Book, Beal, we'll see they've got a shot!" *narrator:* "They did not, in fact, have a shot"
This was the best decade for the Suns! 😢
Yall should do the 2000 trailblazers
I was 12 in 1993 and was rooting for the suns
@11:25
Thanks for the falldown early celebration BJ Armstrong. Lmao
I literally feel like this video was made for me
When I finally seen the day I was born pop up 5/9/1993 I got so hype 😂
3 of the Bulls’ 4 wins were by a combined 10 points
They needed every bit of Jordan’s 41 PPG as they had no margin for error
Still think the Conference Finals were fixed in 1993. NBA seemed to market Suns vs Bulls, Barkley vs Jordan even before the season started. Conference finals; All those fouls called vs Seattle. Those no calls vs New York.
The 1993 New York Knicks, 1993 Phoenix Suns,1994 Seattle Supersonics, 1998 Utah Jazz, 2001 San Antonio Spurs, 1969 Los Angeles Lakers.
Fun fact
My mom was 5 months pregnant with my older brother during the finals. And Charles Barkley got off the plane from Chicago and told my mom he'd win this series for her and the baby.
She's hated my brother ever since🥲
looks like dame got a giannis 😢😢❤
hey, I was alive. lol. they were a great team
Barkley and the 76ers were not getting along at all--it was a toxic situation and they were both just trying to cut ties and move on.
WE weren’t around??? Pardon ME but 1993 was MY Senior year in HIGH SCHOOL!!! 😵😭
They're definitely one of the best.
Nahhh no way they threw a Parade for losing in the Finals LMAO straight up Pity Party
My theory as to why 1sts were so valued back then was because free agency wasn’t really a thing. If you got drafted there was a huge chance you’d just stay with the team that drafted you for your career. After teams realized they can get quality starters and stars via free agency, the value of 1sts went down because they weren’t the only way to get a franchise player anymore.
@@arthurhu8208 I'd actually argue draft picks are valued less because of how often they get traded around in the modern NBA.
I remember that series one of them games Dumas was killing Scottie Pippen 😂😂. Richard Dumas was a sad story man had mad potential
The Greatest "Small Ball" Tim ever...
1993 Knicks are more deserving of this video....Suns lost 11 pre Finals playoff games (record not broken until 2001).....The most by a NBA team before the Finals....They had no defense. The Knicks would've beaten them (had Smith not choke in game 5 in the ECF)......had they got past the Bulls. Period.
The 93' Suns, the 94' Rockets , the 94' Knicks, the 95' Spurs, the 96' Sonics, and the 97' Jazz would all annihilate every version of the warriors in 2010's
The 90s Rockets was the origin of those 2010 Warriors teams.
@@damonsonnier34 sort of, the 3p was still just a secondary weapon back then. It's the main weapon of the warriors
@@hakeemolajuwon4352 Kenny Smith, Sam Cassell, Vernon Maxwell, Mario Elie, and Robert Horry would all thrive in today’s NBA.
@@damonsonnier34 not without Olajuwon

Andrew Lang was a defensive center with no offense lol.
1993 Suns were one of the most disappointing playoff teams too.
Had difficulties against an inferior Lakers team.
Got challenged by San Antonio.
Got gift wrapped with 63 free throw attempts against Seattle.
Then the Bulls.
And consistently losing at home too, like you can't do that if you're the best team in the NBA.

I get Paul Westfall and Paul Westhead confused all the time

1992 Blazers as well.
If only we didnt face the bulls in 93 we wouldve won. Agaisnt anyone else but then
Phoenix was lucky to get out of the first round
I am not quite sure about that. The Rockets and Suns split their season series with 2 games a piece. That would have been a great Western Conference Finals series to watch.
No way. This Suns team barely squeaked by a mediocre Lakers team with an old James Worthy. They would have been taken to the limit by any other East team.
@@romanramirez7847 by that logic the 72-9 warriors berly squeaked by the okc thunder and choked to cleaveland and would be taken to there limit by anyone as well lmaoo. Cant acknowledge good competition when you see it
