Those old Volvo lights come back to life very nicely with a good wet sanding (P800 -> P1200 -> P2000 -> P3000 -> P4000) and a polish. Just recently did this to a totally hazed 740 tail light and it now looks like a million dollars.
Hear hear, just what I was about to comment!
Sledge, it is a good thing that it stands out because the tester WILL notice that the lens has been replaced. My XC90 just keeps on going...
Haha true! I was worried he'd then fail the other side because it looked super faded by comparison but the Polytrol evened everything out
Honestly, I really like the "standout" repairs on older Volvo's. Cars that get used will get damaged & rusted. I think it's patina to have the repairs show, it marks the car as a driver and not one that sits in the barn for 50 years.
The rear lights will respond to being buffed like you need to do wi try plastic headlamps…..nice job though mate…
Thanks for the tip! 👍
Wow! NIce job! Looks like they are available for wagons also! Great tip! Thanks @Mortimer Galdbreath! And thanks to volvo engineers from the past! 😀
Awesome isn't it!
I'm happy that it worked out for you! I got tired of wrestling with the failure-prone design of the circuit card in the tail lights and rewired them with actual wires soldered to the sockets. Haven't had an issue since. Cheers!
Oh nice! I haven't had any issues with mine, the board looks so fresh I feel like it might have been replaced at some point
Nice job. It’s amazing that a part like this can be easily replaced without throwing everything else away. It’s the opposite to what happens with modern cars.
Exactly my thoughts!
It's awesome how easy it is to get 240 parts
It depends, i got a 85 turbo brick and parts are obsolete or expensive. But yes, there are some cheap and easy parts which fit for all years.
@@ingoperkele915 You might be right!
Recon Change The Bulbs Out To LED's So No More Drain On The Tired Wiring Harness,Bulb Sockets And Lower Fire Risk
Great fix fella and some T-cut or slightly firmer rubbing compound would definitely make those look somewhat brighter for the time being!
Thanks, I forgot about good old T-cut!
nice work, from the Swede Memories workshop downunder. :)
Thanks!
It's usually deterioration of the reflectors that cause the biggest loss in light output. They are of course not visible through the lens.
Almost there!
Nice little fix. Love that car!
Cheers Marc!
Your practical approach is a delight to watch. Thanks so much!
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!
Those other lenses should clean up nicely with a bit of wet sanding and polishing compound
The 240 wagon/estate oddly had this same issue. 'Dunno if the availability of the lens came about due to this issue or I it was available from the very first two iterations of the lenses on the 240.
The 140 series did not have this issue, instead the cemented sections get fragile with age. My left side rear lens snapped in half several years ago when it tumbled off the car as I switched over to LEDS one Saturday.
Haha that's so weird!
Good luck with the retest 👍👍
Thanks!
Nice neat quick job Sledge. She's almost ready.
Love your make do and mend approach. Being a full time unpaid carer, any tips, shortcuts, hacks, are most welcome, to keep my 1991 Volvo estate on the road. Your time and effort in producing these videos is much appreciated. When I'm in a position to become a patrion, both you and Whiteland Restoration's are at the top of my list. Cheers Steve.
Oh thanks, very kind! Glad you enjoy the content. The Whitelands are really awesome!
nice, good job
Thanks!
gotta love an easy fix like that. I recently had my reverse switch go out on my transmission after I replaced the clutch and I'm regretting not replacing it while I had the transmission pulled
Ah yeah, I feel that,, with the mount removed and the transmission lowered I struggled to even plug the switch in, nevermind replace it!
Wonderful work!
Thank you! Cheers!
changing the faded/cracked taillights was the first thing i did when i got my 940. its the small things that make a big difference 👌
It really does!
Wet sand with 1500grit and buff out the sanding marks and they will look like new
Nice job like always!
Thanks 🙂
Quality job done there.
Thanks!
I know how much it sucks if ebay is your only spare part supplier. My VW Passat 35i was a very solid and reliable carbut at some point i was just tiered of fixing things every two weeks.
I had no idea you could buy the reverse light lens separately.
I'm sure they don't advertise that fact.
A nice easy fix that looks good. Good luck on the retest.
Thanks 👍
Great job for little money 😀👍🏻
Another great video! Thank you. I'm just curious there were no church bells this time are you starting to time you're recording to the bells? ☺️
Thanks! Haha I didn't even realise that 😄
Good fix! So, the replacement reversing light lense was old new stock? Or are Volvo still making them? I was a bit surprised you didn't remove the bulb before cleaning the reversing light compartment. Filament lamps are not robust. Thanks for sharing!
Maybe spraying that cleaner on the bulb dulled the light? Does a new bulb cost much?
Clean The glas of The taillight then wet sand it and after clearcoat then your taillight be as new.
if I were you I would sand it with 800 then put a 2k clear coat on it, surely would look like new as your white lens fully.
Great tip! Thanks
Hi, I don't wish to be pedantic, was the red lower corner bulb working on the side you repaired (06:21) ?
Love your motor, still searching for a 240 GLT 😊
Good spot, thanks 😀 And good luck with the search!
Can You Get ISOFIX Anchor Kits To Suit For The Up And Coming Involvo'd JNR
That would be cool, just like Whiteland Restorations recently did
Great job looks very well,👍 where do you get your parts from or where do you recommend.
Thanks! I normally use Skandix, Polar Parts , Motointegrator, Autodoc and for used parts Kleinanzeigen, they are all based here in Germany
@@Involvod thanks it's hard to find parts here in Ireland and if you do they can be expensive
How long do you suspect the Owatrol to last on the tail lights? Is this like a re-do every 3 months solution?
I used it once before on these lights and it only lasted a few months, but I don't think I used enough, it soaks into the plastic, I think this time it should last longer as I went heavier with it.
I also used it on all of the faded black plastic and rubber (bumpers, wing mirrors, trim etc) and almost a year later and after lots of time in the sun and rain it still looks fresh and black, I highly recommend it!
I hope the wheels don't have to be cleaned to pass TUV!
Unbelievable how nitpicky your TÜV Inspectors are. In diffrent parts of Germany the 240 would have passed without any remarks.
If are parts hard to find Maybe i can help living in Sweden Gothenburg
Thanks, much appreciated 👍
Recon Start Looking At XC90's L.O.L.
I went to pick up one of these and my thumb went right through the lens. Be careful with these, gents.
Ooof!
A Brit in Germany grew up with GBP now uses Euros but for some crazy reason brings in the Dollar. 11 bucks wtf is that in real money???
That's what I was wondering, too. I priced that exact part from my Volvo dealer and it was $20.44.
How is it going with the Merc :)?
Don't ask! He couldn't even say its name! lol
Surprisingly well! Got another video installment out on it tonight!
Just like “new” again, 🤔 however; I’m still curling my toes over your rust “repair”🫣
