Overcapacity is when there's more supply than demand. China had a huge demand for cars due to the economic boom since the 90s. Further, there were no Chinese in-house knowledge of car manufacturing either. Also, Western and Japanese car makers are not controlled by their governments, so how the hell would they flood the market - overcapacity requires a big wallet from the government.

A few years ago, when Tesla wanna enter the Chinese market. China has a few options, one is to stop it by raising tariffs, and the second option is to ask it to form a new company with a 50 % share owned by a Chinese company. However, China goes with one that fully opens the market to Tesla, lets it own 100% share, and even subsidizes its running cost. Yes, many Chinese EV companies died after Tesla joined the game, but it does make the ones survive strong. Today, the US can easily put tariffs on Chinese EVs, however, it means the American EV makers won't improve. Later, the US will have to face a tougher decision of raising tariffs on the EU, Japan, and other friends.

US doesn’t even buy that much of EV’s and it wouldn’t because US consumers still likes those Fast and Furious type of cars, US produces oil and gas, US doesn’t have sufficient charging stations nor does it have enough charging facilities at home. If the excuse is US is preparing for the future investment then companies need to invest huge amount and wait, if ever
very long time to get pay back. If Trump comes back he will just put brakes on green EV and invest in fracking. At the end I would advise China to let it go. Let US politicians do what it does.

The American technology media Electrek published an article on the 12th saying that it is ironic that China is often accused of "not doing enough" to deal with climate change, but now the United States says they are "doing too much" in electric vehicles and solar energy.
In 2020, Biden proposed during the campaign: abide by the commitment of the 2020 'The Paris Agreement' (Climate Change Agreement) and reduce carbon emissions.
In 2020, Biden proposed in the National Security Strategy that the U.S. auto industry should enter "Industry 4.0" in order to mass-produce electric vehicles.
In 2021, Biden emphasized that by 2030, the United States will achieve the goal of more than 50% of new cars being electric vehicles.
In 2021, Biden signed the "Bipartisan Infrastructure Law", committing to provide US$7.5 billion in funding to build a nationwide electric vehicle charging network, and setting the goal of "building 500,000 public charging piles by 2030." However, as of today, only 4 states in the United States have built and put into operation a total of 7 public charging stations and a total of 38 charging piles.
In 2024, Biden calls for higher tariffs to boycott Chinese electric vehicles.
"We're very explicitly subsidizing investments in these important strategic areas. We don't want to see massive Chinese subsidies that will just drive our firms out of business."--US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen May 2024
Translation: We'll support US industries with subsidies because it's strategic, but when others do it, it's unfair competition.

@@mawandaeed Not necessarily. They can supply the huge Chinese domestic market from its China factory and export from China to markets that don't have trade barriers on EVs manufactured in China. Tesla can serve the US/Canada market from Austin, Fremont and Nevada and the EU market from Berlin. That way Tesla has the tree biggest markets covered. They really should also have a factory in one of the RHD markets of the UK, Ireland, Japan, Australia, NZ, SA, India, Malta, Cyprus, Thailand, Indonesia, and various other southern and eastern Africa states outside SA. The obvious choice would be the UK, but somewhere in SE Asia would serve a greater number of nearby of markets. Perhaps Indonesia, India or Thailand could supply the required skilled educated workforce and the best labour price? But perhaps only the UK or Japan would have all the required suppliers? If Tesla can bear the labour costs of manufacturing in the US and Germany, then perhaps the UK or Japan labour costs are not an obstacle. Australia has a large domestic market and all the source materials, but they are lazy buggers who are only willing to dig the stuff up and export it. They lack the enterprise or initiative to process those raw materials into finished products themselves.
