Thanks so much for this video. The 1972 series is a big event and big hockey. A different style of play in those years determined the interest in matches and attracted millions of spectators. I was 19 years old and I remember what an event it was. In those years, the tension between the West and the USSR was enormous. And this series became a bridge for understanding and a breakthrough in relations in the 1975 Agreements in Helsinki. It was excellent at building bridges between West and East. Very soon, Soviet hockey players began to play in the NHL, which was basically unthinkable. In 1972, I could only see New York in tails when they showed the UN building. And in 1992, I was able to visit the United States, and later move to live with my family. Life goes on.
The spectacle of the booing Vancouver crowd is definitely the most memorable image of the game. The crowd still did not understand what the players had learned a couple of games ago--the Canadians were no longer alone at the top of the heap.
+Jonathan C No, they were booing not because they were not at the top of the heap, they were booing at the thuggish and disgusting behavior that they were forced to watch, having paid good dollars to do so. The Canadian team was a disgrace and Vancouver surely let them know it. It had nothing to do with losing. It was embarrassing during this game to think our flag was being sullied this way. That was the crux of the issue.
Wow. The Canadians were desperate and playing very dirty. At 7:35 Mahovlich just ran the goalie in the corner and sat on him for 15 seconds without a penalty. I'd boo my team too, if I was in that crowd and saw that kind of play. The Soviets were a better team, but the Canadians wanted it more in the end and did whatever it took to win.
@@Daniil_St.Petersburg and dirty hockey.the worst was phyliss esposhitto...and guy lapointe in game 1....criminal acts....shoulda been charged with assault, both of them
Frank Mahovolich, Denis Hull, Vic Hadfield, Rod Sieling and Don Awrey absolutely brutal along with Dryden who couldn't stop a beach ball. What was Sinden thinking?
The goal by Gilbert would have been allowed by todays standards, not a kicking motion, just a deflection. But the goal was disallowed by 1972 standards, it was the right call for the time. You are right, Canada resorted to very dirty play, but they didn't have to. They had beautiful moves, and played very well. The Soviets just got into the heads of team Canada players. Very much pressure to show Canada was the best in the media. The mental game was why the Soviets had great teams. Canada had very good skaters, Savard showed the Soviets moves they never saw, and Espo was the best goal scorer of the time.
Excuses. Russian outclassed every Canadian player at that game, Savard and Espo were just a class below and couldn't compete so they resorted to dirty play.
Russians had total domination of most of second period. time after time, they came in close with scoring chances. canadian defenseman let them into the slot endless times in the second period, easily could have scored 5 or more goals just in the second period.
yes tommy8853 they did whatever it took to win including taking out one of the russians best players with a deliberate attempt to injure,do you call that good sportsmanship no,did team canada deserve to win no,should they be proud of thier win no,but esposito said he would do the same thing, thats when i lost all respect for him.what if they would have taken you out like that phil, would that be alright with you,and what if they took out henderson like that would that be alright phil,so who really won this series.and remmember the feeling persists that after game one the russians were told by the powers that be if they kept winning that easily it would be bad for the sport, and to purposely not play so well in game 2 and the horrible officiating calling very little against team canada and calling everything against the russians really looks suspicious,a crazy perception, dont be so sure....
True. Russians were head and shoulders better in a series. It was like professionals vs kids. I'm sure they didn't play well on purpose due to political reasons and guidance from top, otherwise they would have walked Canadians like they did in game 1.
on another subject, american basketball fans make me sick, because there always bringing up the fact that on usa network tv nbc or whoever, bb always gets way higher ratings than hockey, when they know darn well,or they should that bb was made for tv and hockey was not.and despite this fact most american nhl teams, the california teams being notable exceptions get higher ratings than thier co tenant bb teams, and certain american nhl teams bury thier co tenants in the ratings, not bad for a sport not made for tv. but the bb fans will never tell you this.we know about hockeys popularity on tv in canada and all the strong hockey countries.but even basketball with all its teams in so many countries never comes close to the world ice hockey championships ratings which are upwards of 700 million.they never mention that...but to his credit the dallas mavericks owner said hockeys network tv ratings are as high or higher than basketball if you include canada, whitch of course you cant. but just the same american bb fans are so annoying...

This game was played in Vancouver. Then why in the name of the Baby Jesus are PA announcements are made in English and French?

Shame to Canadian team for such dirty criminal play. Espo should be banned for life and his name should be cancelled. He is a bustard.
