BurgerTime (バーガータイム Bāgātaimu?) is a 1982 arcade game created by Data East for its DECO Cassette System. The game's original title, Hamburger (ハンバーガー?), was changed to BurgerTime before its introduction to the US. The player is chef Peter Pepper, who must walk over hamburger ingredients located across a maze of platforms while avoiding pursuing characters. The game was popular in arcades. In the US, Data East USA licensed BurgerTime for distribution by Bally Midway. The Data East and Midway versions are distinguished by the manufacturer's name on the title screen and by the marquee and cabinet artworks.
According to Twin Galaxies, the record high score on BurgerTime is 11,512,500 points, set by Bryan L. Wagner in 2008.
When Data East went bankrupt in 2003, G-Mode bought most of Data East's intellectual properties, including BurgerTime, BurgerTime Deluxe, Super BurgerTime, and Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory.
Gameplay
When Peter Pepper walks the length of an ingredient (bun, meat patty, tomato, etc.), it falls one level. If it lands atop another ingredient, the latter in turn falls one level. A burger is completed when all vertically aligned ingredients have been dropped out of the maze and onto a waiting plate. Once all burgers are completed, the screen is finished.
While making burgers, Peter Pepper must deal with three enemies: Mr. Hot Dog, Mr. Pickle, and Mr. Egg. Enemies can be dodged, killed, or temporarily stunned. Killing occurs when an ingredient is dropped atop an enemy, or when support for an ingredient is completely removed and the enemy falls with the piece. In the latter case, the piece will fall much farther than normal, depending on how many enemies are on it. Scoring depends heavily on killing enemies. The more enemies killed with a single sequence of falling ingredients, the higher the score. Therefore, to obtain the best score the player must endanger Peter Pepper by allowing more than one enemy to move onto the ingredient the player is on, just before the player drops it.
Peter Pepper has pepper shots to shake on nearby enemies to stun and render them harmless for a few seconds. Extra shots are obtained by collecting bonus foods, such as coffee, an ice cream cone, or French fries, which appear in the center of the maze when a certain number of ingredients have dropped.
There are six screens of increasing difficulty, with more burgers and enemies, burgers that have more parts, and/or layouts that make it easier for Peter Pepper to be cornered and harder for him to reach the ingredients. Completing all six screens takes the player back to the first one.
My younger brother was a Burgertime master! We played both the Arcade & NES versions. He passed away over 15 years ago & that very game reminds me of him.
Nice memory Man
So sorry for your loss. I would've loved to have seen him play!
TimelordR He must have passed away at a very young age. I wonder how he passed away?
He would've enjoyed BurgerTime Party, if he was alive.
I'm so sorry to hear about your brother's passing, TimelordR. I hope this brought good memories.
Once again, the Colecovision version looks surprisingly close to the arcade version.
The Colecovision in my opinion has the best looking egg out of consoles.
Must admit I do like the Gameboy version.
The Colecovision version is my favorite.. I logged so many hours on it when I was a teen..
I love how the Atari 7800 music just seems to randomly pop any note it wants to.
Kids today will never know the struggle.
+Pixel Vortex of having to choose a version or the right machine. Back then We had so many to choose from. now it has dwindled down to 3. Secondly ! They will never have to face buying a game for it's arcade counterpart only to discover that the version they have is absolute garbage.
+Gaming History Source Most arcade ports back then were good UNLESS you were unlucky enough to have a 2600, Apple 2, Intellivision, or Odyssey 2.
+Scooter Ahlers I don't know, Intellivison had some good arcade ports. Look at Q*Bert.
KillThad Mixed bad as Intellivision did have some good arcade ports - it also had some zingers like Donkey Kong. Too bad the Intellivision didn't have a joystick like the Atari/Commodore/Coleco.
Scooter Ahlers Fair enough, but there was a Intellivision joystick mod. I owned them, and they actually worked quite well.
Arcade's Greatest Hits The Midway Collection 2 for PC also had Burgertime in it, along with 6 other games (including Moon Patrol), but I think when Midway Arcade Treasures came along, they didn't have the rights to it. Burgertime is also found in Data East Arcade Classics for Wii, along with its sequel Peter Pepper's Ice Cream Factory. I'm enjoying these Let's Compare videos; I've never seen a lot of the versions for many of my favorite games. Thank you for doing these!
Coleco burger time! When I had a coleco I played it all the time! The -80-‘s! Awesome!
Peter Pepper is sporting some big ass hats on the Atari 5200 and Atari 7800 versions lol, Great video!!!
I had the intelivision when I was a kid, this was one of my favorite games. Thanks for posting this!
I remember when it came out for intellivision and for me that was the best version - I still have this game today
My favorite is definitely for the Colecovision.
IMO having played recently and owning the 2600 , Intellivision , Colecovision and NES versions . I think that the Intellivision is the best . Looks aren't everything . The Intellivision has the most responsive controls . That little disc really stepped it up in this game . Nothing better than playing these on the original hardware . It's not just about graphics and sound .
I think the NES burgers have been left out of the fridge too long! "Would you like extra mould with your burger sir?".
I'd say the NES is a good arcade port.
hoelman lol.. what? Are you deaf?
Good: Intellivision, Coleco, C64 remake, NES
Bad: Armstrad, original C64
Horrible: Texas Instruments, MSX, 5200 and 7800
Also include the Atari 2600 version in the "bad" category. That thing was HORRIBLE!!!!!
the Atari 2600 only had 128 bytes of RAM.. they did their best
Colecovision looks and sounds the best to me. That system back in it's day could do it all.
Coleco's looks better than intellivision, but the chef moves slower it seems like.
this was and still is a great game!!! I still play it!!! thanks for posting it
Thanks for the view & comment ! I'm glad you enjoyed the video ! :)
The 7800 version shown here isn't the right version, it's a sequel called More Beef Drop with completely different and harder mazes and many more of them. Colecovision wins IMHO followed by BeefDrop, the real version either for the 8bit Atari or the 7800
Even the Video Game Critic agrees. He wrote, "BurgerTime for the Colecovision is easily the best home version I've played, and it even gives the arcade a run for the money. With its meticulously detailed graphics and arcade-perfect gameplay, I really can't find any flaws with this one. Unlike some lesser versions, in this game the pepper is "contagious" between bad guys, which is a good thing."
Yea whoever developed that colecovision version did a hell of a job. Its far better than the 5200 version, which was its direct competition at the time, and also better than the 7800 version which came out many years later. Sad, no telling how big they could have became if they would have kept their focus on gaming consoles instead of the far more expensive Adam home pc line.
The animation of the sausage in the ColecoVision version is funny!
I like how the Amstrad Version is playing a Japanese game, in French, on a British Computer, and the intro jingle is of the American anthem...
PineappleEpyx I always loved the "Amsterdam" computer
That was sarcasm.
One of my favourite arcade games of all time. Great video!
The game itself is excellent ! I got this footage from the demo version. But the game play, music, & challenge were so good I am going to purchase the full version. I would advise anyone to. It's an excellent conversion & update to the original game.
Atari 2600: DAT BASS

I was 24 when I first saw this, and never played any video games except PONG, as it was a 1977 Christmas gift. I can't understand what is so intriguing about playing a game where a chef is being chased around the kitchen by hot dogs, eggs, and dill pickle slices.
Thanks man. There was no copyright claim. I'm just clearing out any potential problems before they arise in the future. :)
I am surprised how good the TI 99 version is considering computers that came out years later still couldnt produce results like that. Also having played the MS DOS version i enjoy that one quite a bit as the controls are really good.
The Intellivision version brings back so many memories. Keep up the good work
The NES version was referenced in the Season 2 premiere of "Captain N: The Game Master." New cast member "Gameboy" is a sentient robot,, and he brought Captain N (as Mr. Hot Dog), Simon Belmont (as Mr. Egg) and Mega Man (as Mr. Pickle since he was with a green design for the show) to Burgertime. As the chef, he avoids Captain N's zapper gun (which shoots out ketchup instead of a freeze ray).
The music on the TI99 version resents every time it stops for a sound effect. That probably gets kinda redundant after a while.
It was later remade as "Mac Attack" for MSX, with improved graphics and even some (crude) speech samples.
Missed Super Burger Time ?
I remeber playing this Burger Time on my Intelivision, good old time !!!
The Apple 2 had very good graphics for back then....Coleco Vision was ahead of it's time when it came to the graphics even to the Atari 7800...and I love the music on Burgertime Deluxe by Windows....Burgertime fan for life!!! :D
another good video man and a bit s**t about the copyright thingy, there was also a port on the spectrum called Barmy Burgers but you only had to build 3 burgers instead of 4.
I think the gameboy one is the best port, the music is all there, the graphics are nice, you can tell you're looking at the lettuce, the meat, the pickle ect. it's not slowed down like some of the other ports pus it still has the classic charm unlike some of the weird modern remakes, plus it has the added benefit of being portabe on the gameboy!
No claims were made But the original used a jingle from back in the 80's from an old McDonald's Commercial. I want to purge all possibilities from this channel to assure it stays in good standing. But the video Will go to Dailymotion so it wont be lost forever. :)
I like how in BurgerTime 97, the chef does a groin thrust to both sides instead.
Atari: Beef Drop
I wasn't always watching the screen, so idk if it said it for the others. But pffft...beef drop...
Man, amstrad got such lazy ports sometimes. It was genuinely a really decent machine, but it often just got fast and nasty aftermarket ports that failed to show the machines capacities at all.
11:53 The Leaderboard...
XD
The player name on Commodore 64
the intellivision version is the most well ported port for intellivision in my opinion
Yep. Shows how Mattel missed the boat by letting Atari lock up all the other arcade games for their system back then.
Bump 'n' Jump was a great Intellivision port too.
The "Pepper" sound is soo epic on intellevision
Peter Pepper officially had a mustache in Japan and even in PAL regions. But North American distributor Midway made that redrawn version.
There are some official sequels like Deluxe and Super versions also by Data East, as well as licensed versions by others.
In North America, this arcade game, Bad Dudes VS. DragonNinja, the Caveman Ninja/Joe & Mac series, and some Neo-Geo games by Data East are the most commonly mentioned ones.
In Japan, the home country of Data East, people mention a lot more than what North America mentions.
Atari 5200 port looks really disappointing... so does the 7800 for that matter, but that's not surprising. The 5200 should be well above Intellivision, and it isn't.
I don't know which version or emulator he used, but 5200 Beef Drop actually looks much better than this. Look up some other videos of it.
This games makes me wonder what a burger with sausage and egg tastes like.
Thanks ! I'm glad You enjoyed the video. :D
Aquarius version, sounded like the Intellivison.
Intellivision and GameBoy versions are my favorites. I still have an Intellivision hooked up, and the Burgertime cartridge is usually what's in it.
The M Network Burgertime cartridge for the Atari 2600 uses 128K of bankswitched ROM and was quite the feat of programming and engineering.
I base it generally on My own personal feelings about that version. I present the arcade 1st & then present MY least favorite to My favorite. As a general rule for Myself I present the windows version last.
The Colecovison is the best. They were always doing it right!
i agree with u too! colecovision burgertime is the best than the other ports..
i always play this game on my original equipment.. :)
It's more faithful to the arcade and the details is amazing. NES is fun though.
@@cadiman12 Add an F18A card to ColecoVision and BurgerTime jumps from an A to A+.
I just recently discovered the arcade version of this game at a laundromat. And it's so much fun. I can see why it was a hit!!
I hate to say this, but since it IS Burger Time....
"Frying and Buying!"
(I know that was from Sonic for Hire but I regret nothing)

As told by the Description!
I modified the timing on the Colecovision time, ENJOY!
Amazing
My love for Burgertime runs deep. Even though some of these were hard to watch like the Aquarius version. It looked like Gumby and Pokey were chasing you. LOL
I loved this game!! I had it for Intellivision first and Nitendo later. I don't like the newer versions that took out the classic Burger Time music. It just doesn't feel like Burger Time without it! Thanks for putting this video up with all the versions. I was really cool to see all of them. Dang! Now I want to play it so bad!!
Missing in this vid: atari st and ps3 remakes
*smirks at the first Commodore virsion* Okay there, "Fry". :P
I love this game! AFAIR port for Atari 5200 was made very late but it's really good. There was no original game for Atari 8-bit computers in the eighties.
I guess Burgertime is sweet REVENGE for all the hot dogs, eggs, and pickles humans have eaten over the years :)
Awesome comparisons! I grew up with the Intellivision version. On one of my first cellphones, I downloaded a version of Burgertime for it that wasn't included here (it wasn't that Java one). I quite liked it despite having to use an unreliable little nub.
This game was so hard to master, but most people don't appreciate that unless they try it themselves!
colecovision is actually at 18:11
There's a freeware clone for Windows called Burgerland that isn't too bad. It uses all 3D graphics, so it looks a little weird but it plays pretty well. The display can be set to follow you close up, or it can be zoomed out.
Oh all the 80's versions I think the TI 994/a was the best
very informative. 10/10 score.
By the way. I'll be uploading Your Spotlight video by Tuesday. :)
Darn, the windows versions of these games are all extremely odd, especially this and dig dug.
I remember the Apple II version fondly. i was pretty good at it, if I say so myself--the keyboard made for easier handling.
The TI99 version was my jam during my early childhood.
+Urist McInternet the ti99 did videogames very well. i knew someone who owned that computer.
I used to own one. Then it broke. Another game I played was Parsec.
colecovision version is very good
By personal preference. But as a rule of thumb I always list arcade first, windows or other variants last. Prototype, tabletop, digital lcd or what not.
Burger Time Intellivision Rules.
atari: whats a burger?
That is how so say hamburger in a hurry in the U.S.A.
Colecovision
Peter pepper picked a pack of pickled peppers. Rolls off the tongue and yes I am aware he’s making burgers but still
Those damn hot. Dogs. Always seemed to be chasing me at the wrong time.
It cracks me up that some of these versions have a few wrong notes, but they're the exact same wrong notes... obviously some of these ports were based off of each other and not the original arcade game.
aquarius version got played alot by me and mates.we actually were that good at it that taking turns would be like 2 hours before one of us actually lost a life.cheers for the ups good times.
BEEF DROP! Followed by its lesser known sequel, "Meat Curtains."
You are really good at this game.
Thanks !! That's a lot different that most people telling me that I suck. lol I appreciate that ! Seriously !! :D
Cheers!
Thank you very much!
I will be removing the original video within the week. If You want it, Now is Your chance to download it for Your own personal archive. I will make it available on dailymotion. I will be working on a remake or pitfall & robotron soon. After that ! Regular uploads will resume ! :) Enjoy the video !
There was also an excellent version for the TI 99/4-A. I played it many times.
It's here.
It exist also for Commodore 16.
the date east Nintendo version is NAILS.
I have only been able to watch other people on RUclips get past level 2 where I am stuck.
the RUclipsr of whom I speak m managed to get to lvl 7 before he/she quit.
didn't have it. :( I mostly focus on the oldest versions unless I can get the footage & it's drastically different from the original But maintains the original game play, experience, & feel.
Nice compilation of the different versions. #1 Arcade, #2 Intellivison, #3 Ti99, #4 NES, #5 Gameboy
That's amazing how many versions there are!
This was created on my birthday!
Happy belated birthday !
What does that even mean? And can you make Let's Compare: Sonic the Hedgehog?
Crazy how the Atari 7800 version seems vastly inferior, both in graphics and sound, than the Atari 5200 version.
Lucky and smart! I was dumb....I wish I had not thrown away my Intellivision!!! I might have been able to get it fixed. I had so many games for it because my Aunt worked for Mattel. She had every game so I was very fortunate when I was young.
All time fave arcade game
I've been trying to find that version of BurgerTime Deluxe for Windows for MONTHS!😬 I had it
on Mac many a year ago but it's just disappeared. Even Big Fish's catalogue doesn't have it
anymore. Frustrating!
That was the version I first played it on. It was awesome!
Arcade, Intellivision and NES in that order :-)
The Atari 2600 was a valiant attempt but should have never left the R&D beta testing room.
Honorable mention to Colecovision.
@@dumaispierre6245 Laughable. Straight from the video game critic, "BurgerTime for the Colecovision is easily the best home version I've played, and it even gives the arcade a run for the money. With its meticulously detailed graphics and arcade-perfect gameplay, I really can't find any flaws with this one. Unlike some lesser versions, in this game the pepper is "contagious" between bad guys, which is a good thing."
intellivision port had a unique design for level 1
I spent hell of time on it...Aquarius computer
One of the most difficult games - right up there with Defender & Ghosts-n Goblins
how come nobody has made a burger based on this game? It's a burger in the order of bun, patty, pickles, fried egg, hot dog, lettuce, and bun.
Most impressed by the TI99 and MSDOS versions. Some of the other versions (2600 esp) it don't resemble food, but something more repulsive.
