Jacob Punch Because blind people still need to use transport, obviously. A car usually has 5 seats, only one person in that car needs to drive it. If various people give you lifts to places (say a partner, your parents, friends etc) you won't always be in the same car. Think before you ask questions.
this might be a weird question but do you notice yourself getting older? without seeing your face/ body change everyday do you you think you still look like a kid ?
I'm sure he can feel his wrinkles and tell that he is getting older just based on how his body feels. You lose stamina when you get older, your joints can start to act up, etc.

I watched a seeing eye dog once possibly save the life of a lady. The dog recognized the bus his owner needed somehow and got really antsy. She thought it was the wrong bus and told the dog "no that's not our bus." I kinda knew it was the last bus of the day so I asked her what bus she wanted. It turned out that it was the right bus afterall so I let her know. If the dog hadn't had been so antsy, I wouldn't have said anything. A pretty major snow storm hit that night and had they missed their bus they may have been stuck alone there all night. Don't know if she had a cell phone or not.
My friend has a guide dog reject. He didn't quite make the cut as a guide dog but he's still much better trained than most dogs you could adopt. He was too friendly to make it as a guide dog but he's still pretty well behaved in normal terms.
This video was really informative. I was impressed hearing that dog guides can even guide their handler back to a parked car they rode only in once. And like Tommy said, dog guides are trained to watch for low hanging objects that could hit their handler's head so they stop at that sort of obstacle so the handler can get the idea to use upper hand protective technique and keep walking until it's clear. Alternatively, the handler can shift a foot ahead in the instance the dog stopped because of a drop off like stairs or a curb. It's fascinating to learn.
Check out Joy Ross, she's also a blind youtuber, and she has some videos walking around with her guide dog. They are really eye-opening and inspiring, I actually enjoyed them a lot.
I really appreciate this video Tommy. So many strangers have gotten angry with me simply because I don't have a guide dog, and I am really good at navigating with my cane, and it would just be really difficult for me to have a dog now for many reasons. My friend's guide dogs have all been wonderful and uniquely different, and have all melted my heart. I would just not be able to get anything else done if I had one full time, and they are, full time. They need people with lots of physical stamina, and lots of time. I've sat with a retired guide for a week and loved him very much not even using him as a guide. Also have lots of travel experience with working teams, so am aware of pros and cons. It's the old thing of people asking questions and ignoring that you are answering from having experienced a life time of situations, compared to only once for three minutes. I've also had people insist that I'm lying to them, that I don't have a dog, and become enraged when I continue to tell them I don't have one. They insist they've seen me with my dog, and I don't have one. I would know, if I had a dog. Why can't a stranger or bus driver accept that I know whether or not I have a dog? This is just another thing that regularly happens to me as a blind person out and about.
Sean Richards Generally, don't. At least not without asking. They're there to do a job and keep their owner safe, distracting them isn't a good idea. Plus the person using the dog probably gets tired of the question.
Sean Richards yes, you should not pet any working dog. If someone is just sitting in one place with their service animal, it may be appropriate to ask. Don't just ask while they're walking down the street.
Also, don't talk, whistle, or coo at the dog either. Some service dogs detect and mitigate oncoming seizures or PTSD episodes and things could get dangerous if they're distracted at the wrong moment.
Don't pet, talk to, or otherwise interact with any working dog unless you ask. For service dogs I say don't ask either, as the dog is busy and I'm sure the handler has things to do. :) I train my own dogs for different jobs (obedience, therapy work, etc.) and often I'm in public with them. It is slightly irritating when the dog is listening well, I tell it to ignore a distraction (the person) and then the person walks right up and grabs at my dog like they're 2 years old. It's INCREDIBLY annoying when they have a vest on and people do it anyway (I've also had kids hit, scream at, and bark at my dogs whime their parents stare). And I'm ready to murder someone if I ask someone not to pet the dog and they do anyway (or talk to it instead). Sounds like a small deal, but I've had it happen douzens of times in less than an hour and it's really disruptive. You wouldn't touch someone's wheelchair or cane while they're using it, don't touch their service dog! :) (My rant is over. I can only imagine the struggles of a service dog handler.)

Hi Tommy! I have a question for you: Has any blind person who lost their vision (i.e. they know what the world looks like but also they know what it is like to be blind) been able to explain what untouchable things look like better that sighted people?
if you go out and drink alot an then go home and put your keys somewhere different, how would you look for it the other day not remembering beause of the beer?
By feeling. Realize that due to his lack of sight, he wouldn't be as careless as to where he places things. He'd ensure to place things in places where it's easy for him to access and feel.
I just found your channel and I can't stop watching! It's so interesting to hear about things from the perspective of someone who has been blind their whole life. Your optimism is heartwarming and your personality is so friendly that I can't help but like you right away! Keep making videos! They're awesome!
Hey Tommy, I love your videos! Do you think you could do a video on Helen Keller and what you think it would be like to be deaf as well as blind? I think it's an interesting topic.
Joey of the Priuses Actually, enjoyable food would either become salty or overly sweet. Most food would also become unpleasant and taste bad, no matter how much seasoning you would put on it
Don't forget that smell actually contributes to a large portion of how you taste. Eating without smell is sort of like seeing in black and white. You are going to get kind of a generally decent idea of what you are experiencing but extremely limited. I knew a kid in 8th grade who lost his sense of smell due to some sort of health issue they knew he had but they had hoped it wouldn't cause that to happen. He became like really depressed and suicidal after that because food just didn't taste like much of anything. I talked to his cousin because they pulled him from school and she said he reported only really being able to taste like saltyness, sweetness, and certain other super specific taste categories and textures. For the most part he said most things just tasted like gray mush. I mean that seriously sucks. Id give up hearing I think before i gave up sight, touch, taste, or smell.
wait what :O I didn't know that your sense of smell can affect your sense of taste too! So that's probably why if you've got a cold and a stuffy nose, everything tastes crap? I thought it was just because of the sickness or the medicines. >
@The Tommy Edison Experience How do you choose a Cafe? Meaning: How do you find a cafe and know it is a cafe, but also how do you decide it's a cafe you like? - For me, i can see it's a cafe and can choose based on interior design, location and view, but also by looking at what cakes they have.
Personally, I'd say no. Apparently the suicide rate in people who are blind and regain their sight is extremely high because of how overwhelming vision is if you've never had it before (fact of the day) --note: I heard this from a professional I worked with, but I'm having difficulty finding another source.
Andie Fox I don't believe that at all. Sounds like a myth. Main reasons someone wouldn't get a surgery for vision is: 1. Risk of complications/failure. Could get brain damage or a lethal infection. definitely the biggest reason. 2. Cost. 3. The vision would still be extremely limited, and would still likely be legally blind (except in the further future. That said, current tech can't even help him _at all_, only other people with different types of blindness)
oh sorry if I made possible this interpretation... it was just that one thing led to another... the two questions I made were unrelated. I meant if he has a son nowadays... I figured that the baby would probably not be his son thou I was still curious who he was... a nephew maybe...
you know I really don't like it when people use "it's not my first language" as an excuse. English isn't my first language, and I speak and type just fine. I'm fine with the spelling mistakes, but not with that excuse.
This was very informative. I've had trainers explain to me briefly about how dogs are trained to help those who are blind or deaf or have medical needs and what breeds are good for what, but I didn't know the full extent of what a seeing eye dog could be trained for. It's quite impressive!
Violet Reynolds dizziness has to do with the liquid that is naturally in your ears. So what happens when your dizzy is the liquid moves slowly and is a bit all over the place just like when you shake a bottle or water or juice. So yes Tommy can get dizzy
Hey Tommy! I just wanted to tell you know that I think you are an awesome human being! I find your personality and outlook on life inspiring. Your humor brings my mood up and I am so thankful for that! thank you for being so great!
Do you play any videogames? Like i know you can listen to your T.V. and know whats going on but can you listen to a video game and know whats going on?
Motion sickness isn't really a visual thing. Its a motion thing so being blind wouldnt really affect if someone gets motion sickness. Same goes for migranes. You don't need sight for migranes
not necessarily, one of the possible causes of motion sickness is the disconnect between your eyes seeing you're stationary and your inner ear saying you are in motion
Motion sickness is caused by your brain being confused by your contradicting senses. Your eyes are telling your brain that you are moving but your ears are telling it that you are stationary. In the case of a boat rocking, your it’s the other way around (eyes saying you aren’t moving but ears tell your brain that you are). So I doubt tommy experiences it.
Tommy you're such an inspiration! You honestly make me view life from a different angle. Thanks for being so informative and cool and keep up with the positive videos!
I once saw a guide doggo and he was the nicest well behaved dog I ever saw and completely knew when to get out the buss and everything! Amazing animals!

"i just gave him back to the place where he came from" That's cruel. I can't imagine how insensitive one should be to give dog back. Actually 2 dogs :/
Well the first dog was too dangerous to have around a blind child. The dog was too rambunctious and could have unintentionally injured him. Parents have to do what is best for their child especially if they have a disability. I don't think giving the last dog away was cruel either. It seems like they gave him back because it was better for the dog. Besides they didn't dump him in a shelter they gave him back to the guide dog organization and they made sure he lived out his old age in comfort. Tommy actually cared about him and made sure he would be taken care of, that is far from cruel and insensitive.
LesEbony Thanks for your answer. I have to confess that I'm Polish and English is not my first language. Usually I understand about 75-80% of what Tommy says. Sometimes I watch his movies 2 or 3 times to understand as much as I can. I treat it like a meeting with a great person and lesson of English language at the same time. I was not sure what is the place that dogs came from, and I thought that it could be a shelter... Sorry, I didn't want to be unpleasant with my comment :)
Delilah There's a long waiting list for guide dogs so some other person who needed one and who was better able to handle one that was a bit overactive got lucky and I'm pretty sure that guide dogs normally get retired to families who don't need a woking dog when they get to old to work. It's very important to find a good match between service dogs and their handlers because of how much time they spend working together. It's really not the same thing as picking up an animal as a pet.
One of the most amazing skills guide dogs are taught is called "selective disobedience" they've been taught to disobey their handler in order to protect them. This is something really hard to teach.

You are wonderful Tommy! Your personality is....unlike anyone I known. You always make me smile!
if you go out and drink alot an then go home and put your keys somewhere different, how would you look for it the other day not remembering beause of the beer?
oh good question
By feeling. Realize that due to his lack of sight, he wouldn't be as careless as to where he places things. He'd ensure to place things in places where it's easy for him to access and feel.
Mshojat even drunk?
i have feeling her would not go get drunk.
funloveish He drinks you can see in one of his videos
I just found your channel and I can't stop watching! It's so interesting to hear about things from the perspective of someone who has been blind their whole life. Your optimism is heartwarming and your personality is so friendly that I can't help but like you right away! Keep making videos! They're awesome!
I think it's common courtesy too to pick up after your dog
tommy i love you my brother. why don't you make your videos longer? you deserve the ad revenue. peace and love from the uk.
Video length doesn't affect ad revenue (I'm also a RUclipsr). The only thing that affects it are how many people watch through or click ads.
Hey Tommy, I love your videos! Do you think you could do a video on Helen Keller and what you think it would be like to be deaf as well as blind? I think it's an interesting topic.
Leah W did you know Helen Keller had a dog
Neither did she
HawkGaming people still make Helen Keller jokes? lmao
Sadly that joke will never die.
The way you tell stories is so soothing
Tommy, if you could give up another sense to see, would you do it? If so, what sense?
Matthew Ward yes
Joey of the Priuses Actually, enjoyable food would either become salty or overly sweet. Most food would also become unpleasant and taste bad, no matter how much seasoning you would put on it
I'd still rather have my sight than both my taste and smell...
Don't forget that smell actually contributes to a large portion of how
you taste. Eating without smell is sort of like seeing in black and
white. You are going to get kind of a generally decent idea of what you
are experiencing but extremely limited. I knew a kid in 8th grade who
lost his sense of smell due to some sort of health issue they knew he
had but they had hoped it wouldn't cause that to happen. He became like
really depressed and suicidal after that because food just didn't taste
like much of anything. I talked to his cousin because they pulled him
from school and she said he reported only really being able to taste
like saltyness, sweetness, and certain other super specific taste
categories and textures. For the most part he said most things just
tasted like gray mush. I mean that seriously sucks. Id give up hearing I
think before i gave up sight, touch, taste, or smell.
wait what :O I didn't know that your sense of smell can affect your sense of taste too! So that's probably why if you've got a cold and a stuffy nose, everything tastes crap? I thought it was just because of the sickness or the medicines. >
I could listen to you talk all day, Tommy. You make me so happy!
youtube thank you for recommending me this video
@The Tommy Edison Experience How do you choose a Cafe? Meaning: How do you find a cafe and know it is a cafe, but also how do you decide it's a cafe you like? - For me, i can see it's a cafe and can choose based on interior design, location and view, but also by looking at what cakes they have.
If someone told you that they could preform a surgery to allow you to see, would you have the surgery preformed on you?
He's answered this before. Just look up his older videos.
He has a video based on that topic already. Give it a watch!
Personally, I'd say no. Apparently the suicide rate in people who are blind and regain their sight is extremely high because of how overwhelming vision is if you've never had it before (fact of the day) --note: I heard this from a professional I worked with, but I'm having difficulty finding another source.
Andie Fox
I don't believe that at all. Sounds like a myth.
Main reasons someone wouldn't get a surgery for vision is:
1. Risk of complications/failure. Could get brain damage or a lethal infection. definitely the biggest reason.
2. Cost.
3. The vision would still be extremely limited, and would still likely be legally blind (except in the further future. That said, current tech can't even help him _at all_, only other people with different types of blindness)
its not a myth
Wow, never really thought about how amazing guide dogs can be, all the things they do. Amazing creatures.
Nice photo with you and the dog, who is the baby in your arms? do you have a son?
he looks like a teenager in that photo, do you really think that's a son?
oh sorry if I made possible this interpretation... it was just that one thing led to another... the two questions I made were unrelated. I meant if he has a son nowadays... I figured that the baby would probably not be his son thou I was still curious who he was... a nephew maybe...
Were you ever taught punctuation? ............................................
Morph Kogan Don't be rude, English may not be his first language. And even if it is, who cares? This is RUclips, not grammar school.
you know I really don't like it when people use "it's not my first language" as an excuse. English isn't my first language, and I speak and type just fine. I'm fine with the spelling mistakes, but not with that excuse.
the way he talks calms me down so much
I can be your guide dog Tommy, woof woof
Lol
this just sounds soooo wrong... :D
Edge Of Light Oooh naughty boy
Get back, Sit ubu, good dog.
Kinky.
This was very informative. I've had trainers explain to me briefly about how dogs are trained to help those who are blind or deaf or have medical needs and what breeds are good for what, but I didn't know the full extent of what a seeing eye dog could be trained for. It's quite impressive!
Can you get or feel dizzy if you don't see anything spinning?
Violet Reynolds dizziness has to do with the liquid that is naturally in your ears. So what happens when your dizzy is the liquid moves slowly and is a bit all over the place just like when you shake a bottle or water or juice. So yes Tommy can get dizzy
You have such a great sense of humor. I really enjoy your channel.
Hey Tommy! Since you can't exactly write yourself, say, a shopping list, how do you go about remembering stuff?
There's probably an app for that now or maybe he uses a note on his iPhone & has it read out what's on there.
Kuchenfari brail printer?
"Siri, remind me to buy milk, eggs and bread the next time I'm at the grocery store." Tommy has an iPhone.
How the hell do you not remember what to buy? I've never used a shopping list in my life.
ciko 2283 That's great. Not all of us can do what you can. Try not to gloat. The world will think better of you.
Your laughter is great, it makes me smile every time.
When it takes you a minute to get his opening joke and you feel stupid because you didn't get it
Hey Tommy! I just wanted to tell you know that I think you are an awesome human being! I find your personality and outlook on life inspiring. Your humor brings my mood up and I am so thankful for that! thank you for being so great!
Do you listen to audio books often, or not really?
I never realized how smart they REALLY are! That's amazing.
You are the master of corny jokes, and I love it!
This guy just has the best personality ever, he's awesome
did you any attachments to the dog ?
I teared up hearing about that good boy Clancy helping Tom and the elderly.
What kind of jobs did you have in the past?
I've never heard of this channel before tonight but am watching video after video because they're really cheering me up. Such a great personality!
does he live alone? does he have a wife? any kids?
Oh the story about your second dog is so sweet, I'm really glad he got to go work at a nursing home.
You could say the people asking this question were *hounding* you :DDDDD
How come every photo you take is wonderful? They look like professional photos! That's always impressive!
Dogs are simply the best creatures on the planet ❤
Couldn’t agree more! They work for us because of their genuine desire to make us happy.😭😭😭
I've been waiting all week for a new video
I swear I heard him say he had one dog for each head. Glad I'm wrong 😂
Kolby Benthin wait, he didn’t say that?
Lmao I heard head too😂
@@roddydykes7053 hand
"if i don't pick it up, I'm going to be wearing it" hahaha You bring great humor to your explanations!
Do you play any videogames? Like i know you can listen to your T.V. and know whats going on but can you listen to a video game and know whats going on?
That's very touching, .how much they know and care
well i would need a guide dog just to help me find my car. i'm not even blind tho, just stupid.
so... are you blind in the sense of intelligence? o.o that's some deep shit man...
lol no i just forget where i parked my car all the time
El LaPoint a guide dog is a service animal
Polopony20 but are rectangles squares? I thought this “paradox” was taught in 1st grade lmao
Lmao
I had a dog when I was growing up named Clancy. He's been gone for 5 years but I love him still.
Do you experience motion sickness ever? Or maybe migraines?
Motion sickness isn't really a visual thing. Its a motion thing so being blind wouldnt really affect if someone gets motion sickness. Same goes for migranes. You don't need sight for migranes
not necessarily, one of the possible causes of motion sickness is the disconnect between your eyes seeing you're stationary and your inner ear saying you are in motion
Motion sickness is created by the fluid in your ear that tells your brain your orientation sloshing around making your brain confused.
Thanks for being so informative and cool and keep up with the positive videos!
how did you get the dog to walk you to the vet??
I once saw a guide doggo and he was the nicest well behaved dog I ever saw and completely knew when to get out the buss and everything! Amazing animals!
Do you slam into head-height things often?
Your happiness is SO contagious! You're a great person!
Thanks for this. I'm one of the people who asked this question and this was very informative. Have a great day! :)
I just love Tommy, he's so wonderful to listen to!!
Now, I know you say you don't like pasta, but I would suggest you go to a fine restaurant and have your mind blown! Would make for a fun video too! :)
This breaks my heart. I think I love you tommy. Like this is just amazing like if I was blind I would feel so shit but you just live life and love it. Your actually my inspiration
It's really not the same thing as picking up an animal as a pet.
he became a therapy dog for older people so hes happy :)
