- 3 decades after being dubbed the 'Lightning Kid' of world chess, the man who broke through Soviet domination, is again the World Rapid Chess Champion at the age of 48. Here is Viswanathan Anand, speaking with his characteristic dry wit on his life and legacy.
His mother actually spent an hour writing the whole program down so he could watch it. That’s an amazing mom.
This guy is a gentleman, really interesting hear him talk, so smooth and inteligent, i could hear him for hours
How can one be so humble and a world champion. That amazes me.
You have no idea how humble he is
what about wesley so? (assuming you count 960)
amen to this though
@@imamoronand9199 he is humble and a simple man to the limit. Pure loving and kind person.
@@alexandreluizalves there's no way to tell how humble someone is from a youtube video
Anand is now my favorite chess player. Humble and very intelligent!
He is in top ten for last 3 decades and has all the knowledge and grace of a common man... Salute you
Anand Has Mentioned in several Interviews that His relationship with Kasparov was really cold...Kasparov took Rivalry off the Board too.
When Kasparov was still active, everyone had a strained relationship with him. Kasparov was so insanely competitive that it was impossible for other players to become friends with him, especially since he wasn't above using low blows to get ahead. During his match with Anand for example, he behaved pretty badly after he had lost game 9. In game 10, he stormed into the playing hall like a raging bull, smashed the pieces on the board when he made a move and then stormed out again, slamming the door behind him. There's an interesting book called 'The day Kasparov quit chess' which contains a lot of interviews with top players from the 90s, including one with Anand where he talks about his match with Kasparov and his relationship with him. There's also another interview in there with Kramnik where he talks about Kasparov spreading rumors about him, for example that he had bought a game from Gelfand. Basically, Kasparov was a huge asshole when he was still active.
@@hansmahr8627 wow
@@hansmahr8627 Kasparov is an emotional wreck, thats why he couldn't get any success in poker
The man who tried to put you down probably spent his life in labor work and wanted the same for you. Good choice being one of the greatest and seeming very humble.
One of the best sportsperson that India has...
Right up there with major dhyanchand and sachin..
But never got the due.
Keep going sir...
I can accept vishy is on par with major dhyan chand..cricket is no competition to chess.on par with sachin? Chess itself the broadest game than cricket in terms of completion, number of nations, number of players etc..no comparison at all..chess is way beyond cricket..
Thank ypu really much
I have noticed that whenever genuine smart people talk, things just make sense. There are no gaps/holes in the thought process and ideas seem to tie together seamlessly. One can listen to such thoughts endlessly.
i always believed that its Anand who is Bharat Ratna of sports and not sachin tendulkar. there are reasons for it . sachin had people like gavaskar and kapil dev and whole others to emulate, and even during his time sachin had other solid players like ganguly and dravid but Anand just created his image as pioneer of chess in india .
Satish Kumar . I love both Sachin and Anand.
i too love both but i think anand deserve bharat ratna more than sachin.
Satish Kumar . Both are so humble. Both are so good at what they do. Both have worked so hard . Both are so passionate for their sports. Both should have got bharat ratna. I think when Anand retires he too will get.
I too agree... Vishy deserves it the most....
Comparison is skew. I don't know whr people compare.
I can watch/hear him all day and still crave more! He is a Gentleman.
he seems like a really nice guy
Perfect interview with one of my favorite GM. Keep up the scroll Conversations.
Where are you from?
@@kishanjethwani5565 from earth... :)
It's a bit strange that the questions were cut out. One is forced to guess a bit. Anand is good, thanks
He has amazing personality ! All the best wishes for him in the future tournaments much love to Anand from Turkey
Great interview!
Really enjoyed this interview. Anand is a class act and I hope the best for him and his family.
I love the queen knocking over the king at the end. Thank you.
Fantastic interview. Very interesting insights into his early days, his influences, the game, and the meta-game.
Excellent interview...thanks for this
Thanks, Scroll, for a lovely interview. How deeply anchored and finely balanced this chess master is!
I loved this channel .
Your videos are really googd.
Klass. My Son loves this Guy. Veer only started playing a few months back and by watching Anands games along with the help of his chess teacher RAY and Unis - he is doing quite well.

Great interview
Very very very nice interview .. thanks Scroll.in
I've recently watched games of Vishy Anand, and he is such an exceptional player. What a wonderful and humble individual, and he is one of my favourite Chess Players of all time!! I'm sorry, but I really don't like Magnus Carlsen!!
Yes, humility takes Anand to top rank for me as well.
Sir! You are such a gentleman. You are the most humble person I know .
What a man! True legend.
Wow..very "to the point" answers. spoke his mind clearly! Didn't expect he'd be so candid with his answers.
Vishy is a rockstar and inspiration for everyone. Also, shout out to scroll team.. Nice Interview and great editing.. Keep it up.
Mr. Vishwanathan Anand I am proud of you today for the fact today that you have Elevated chess play in India to a realm it has never seen before. You very well know me.The fondest youtube subscriber of all your great videos. Never to retire.Always play to win. My personal favourite of yours. The two kinghts attack.Cheers and have a great time.Sir.
Always a pleasure to listen Vishy
Classy gentleman, excellent player
Thank u, 'Sir', plz guide new talents as they may carry the torch of success, as u do!
Pleasure to hv u, my favourite Sportsman!
The legend himself 😍
Vishy sir is very lucky to have such a family.
My family have always tortured and harassed me especially my mother
Thanks... The interview is very good. Letting the master speak most is the key!! well done.
But for a world champion, the voice quality should have been better.
Great champion and a greater human being.
One of the best interviews with Anand in the recent years!!! 👌👍
He has a really supportive mother
Nice to hear
Korchnoi story was amazing
The video is very nice
such a gentleman
He genuinely looks like a nice guy
He is so genuine
Nice!
A man who showed that indians are not behind broke the soviet domination and became world champion 5 times and got chess oscar 6 times and dominated world of chess from 2007 -2013 he is no other than vishy anand
This man is a Class Act!!
LEGEND !!!
We need a movie on Vishy!
Indeed
Gem of a man
Legend 🔥
The first one minute of this video was like - it was worth listening it.
GOAT
A very nice coversation. Plz improve the poor audio recording arrangement.
19:30 timeframe ,it just flew during the interview
How I would love to play against Vishwanathan Anand on chess.com.The best portal of chess.Ever.
I really like when the guy on the train said "Maybe you could be a professional chess player if you were Anand"
Woah I didn't know he went here in the Philippines to study chess when he was young.
He speaks fluent Spanish.
Actually his father was an employee of the World Bank, then posted to Manila.
RESPECT
Anand is chess legend
Best player
He stayed in the Philippines omg thats the first time ive heard that story
BEING A FAN OF VISHY....I DON'T KNOW THAT HE STAYED IN MANILA DURING HIS YOUNGER YEARS.....WOW....EVEN JOINED A LOCAL CONTEST.....HAHAHA...NICE HISTORY THOUGH
I DONT THINK THERE WAS ANY POINT IN CAPITALISING THAT STATEMENT
AFAIK, it was organized by Eugene Torre who may have been the first Asian GM.
@@stopwritingthatreplyjohnat6638 WHAT IF THE CAPS LOCK ON HIS KEYBOARD IS STUCK ?
While almost all World Champions were very arrogant, Vishy was one of the few Champions who were really humble
I as a youngster used to make paper cut outs of pravin thipsay sir. I wonder why chess puzzles don't appear on the times of India these days like they used to.!
Give this legend a Bharat Ratna
Real Bharat Ratna❤️❤️❤️
Great video. But please work on that annoyingly frequent mic positional changes.
Experience used to count a lot more everywhere. Computers, technology, and an absurd overemphasis on rapid changes makes experience nothing like it used to be.
Anand is well know for being one of the first using computers a lot.
8:43 - Okay, that sounds weird....
I didn't know Anand came to the Philippines(Manila), Chess was a big thing in the Philippines(Manila) before, now they don't care about it. No support from the Locals/Government.
His father was an Indian government employee on deputation to the World Bank and posted in Manila.
@@MrAnanthaP Ohh I see, that makes sense, Thank You for sharing this.
People who didn't get Bharath Ratna yet - Anand, Ar Rahman
Bharat Ratna Vishy Anand
How doesn't Anand age ? He looks very young.
What is he talking about around 13:00? The average age of the top ten is around 30.
Plz encourage chess like cricket.its an indian game.
Am I hearing Christmas music in the background? Lol

Just Waiting for the day he will get the Bharat ratna.
Pls help me.I am in horrible family problems
Okay so nobody is here till now from Samay's Channel.
not one question about carlsen , shame on interviewer
Great answers by Vishy. Crappy editing and poor audio quality though.. :-(
what i don't like about chessplayers is exactly what anand tell about himself here. they like to get lost in the chess world and this makes them have simplistic opinions about other topics. for example here he was harsh on kasparov not winning chess politics and he did not mention what a corrupt organization fide is. one of the reasons fide is like this is silence of grandmasters in the chess world. "they want to be left alone playing chess"
Same goes for a lot of other professions. People want to do their own thing. Monks want to be left alone and meditate all day, farmers want to be left alone and work the land. What is wrong with that? Let them be.
I think BharatRatna do not deserve Vishy Anand. #sarcasm
how dare you even upload a video with the world champion in it, without fixing the audio? several mic jumps from external to cam mic, awful audio compression (threshold set wrong). i cant imagine a self respecting video producer to review this before rendering and saying "well, this is perfect now". SHAME ON YOU. and huge respect to Viswanathan for putting up with a bunch of amateurs. In short: either improve, or quit. don't make videos of questionable quality.
jeez louise, take it easy big guy
Interview without questions made it boring.
