Great advice! As a former radio program director, these are the same things I use to tell my announcers. I especially like the part where you advise to talk as if you're talking one on one, rather than "hey everybody"...that was a pet peeve of mine. Another pet peeves was when the announcer would.say "right now", because when else would it be...haha!

I never minded the 'Right now' as a lot of presenters would always tell you what was coming up later, in fact, everything I was interested in was always 'Later in the show' so, when they announced that that it was going to happen, 'Right now', it made me pleased 🙂

I've been told by tons of people, 2 of those people were into radio, that I have a perfect voice for radio and voiceovers. I wasn't courageous enough to even look into it. I do have a BA in children's theatre but at that time I didn't even think of radio. I am really great at creating characters with different voices. People remember me on the phone. I can talk to others once in 6 months and it can be 6 months or a year later that I talk to the and they always remember my voice and usually my name. I kind of sound like a child or can. I'm too old to start a career. I'm 70 yrs old. I would have really enjoyed these jobs.
Hi James, I've been in and around radio for over 22 years. I can relate to everything you say in this video. You're voice should sound natural but magnified. So many presenters now are putting on that slight twang on their voice to make themselves sound more jock, it's really not needed.

Pretty much spot on IMHO. I've been associated with radio at various times in my life from 1970 onward. I'm retired now, and I do it for fun. All your advice about how to speak was great; I've come to quite similar conclusions myself.
Over time microphones in use here in the US have varied widely. Of course the Neumann condensers have almost always been around, but they were pricey and complicated, with a vacuum tube (or valve as you might say) right in the head. I have my grandfather's Shure 556S (the broadcast version of he Shure 55 "Elvis" microphone) with the original Unidyne capsule, which sounds somewhat dated compared to today's microphones. In the late 1960's electret technology was brought to market, small and very small diaphragm electret condendsers became widely available. They had another recent invention, a FET, right in the capsule. No polarixing voltage and not tube at the head made them simple and comparatively iexpensive. I worked at one AM broadcast station which used $30 Sony electrets in their studio. But Electrovoice and Shure went worked o perfecting the dynamic to compete with the condenser, and the RE20 and SM7 were the result. They sounded more like a condenser than other microphones at the time they were introduced, and variants of these models have been in use for 40 years. The latest innovation
is that we have inexpensive condenser microphones, manufactured in China, which get extremely close to the sound of a Neumann condenser. The AKG P220 I use is a good example. I could spend $3700 on a U87AI and it would sound only sightly different than the P220 which I got "open box' from Ebay for $100. Note that I say "different", for my voice I'm not sure if either is clearly better.
One final comment: The audio editor is your friend. When things don't come out exactly as I want, I can just repeat the phrase correcting the problem, and edit out the bad bits. Today I'm doing what I used to do in production studio on my laptop

Great introduction for me! I give online trainings at times in my job with the U.S. federal government. I know the subject matter well and I receive good evaluations. But I want to move toward a more professional level with my voice. Our IT people already gave me permission to plug in my personally-owned AKG Lycra microphone into my government computer (since no outside driver software needs to be loaded). The Lycra is much better than the built-in laptop microphones that most trainers use. But I may move up to a more expensive microphone, plus using some of your suggestions on my speaking voice and maybe even on audio processing. Thanks!

I really enjoyed the part about speaking to the listener, and was actually the reason I started searching for tips on speaking as a "radio host." Something I noticed recently about myself that I don't like, is that I say things like "you guys" or "hello everyone" a lot. Which I think stems from my experiences on the earlier days of youtube. I wasn't sure why, but I didn't like that I had this weird habit to keep saying those things, it felt very ingenuine somehow. But its been ingrained into me to say those things from when I used to watch more videos.
Great video and tips. I'm going to try practicing these things. Especially the bit about taking my personality up just a notch. Maybe starting by projecting a bit more and as you said, remembering also to take breaths because sometimes I talk so cyclic I can't even understand what I'm saying when I go back and review it.

a more expensive microphone does not mean that a better sound will come out, you will have to find out in the beginning which microphone best suits your voice.
I have had several microphones in thirty years, now I only use the shure microphone with a good compressor/limiter from DBX. but a good acoustic studio is also important.

How would you route this if using a Rodecaster Pro?
Would one route the Rodecaster through the DBS or route the DBS through the Rodecaster.......or would you say this isn't needed if one is using a Rodecaster Pro?

I use an Audio Technica AT2020 for recording vocals when I'm singing, and sometimes when recording my podcast, but I also have just bought the PreSonus Revelator Dynamic, which I'm still trying out at the moment with the different settings and will use for broadcasting and Podcast recording. I do like the Neumann, but it is a little expensive when starting out
Hey! How do you send the dbx 286s audio to your computer? Also, could you explain how the connections are? Does your microphone goes to a mixer, then goes to the compressor then goes do the computer? Thank's!
Connected via an XLR cable to a good quality audio interface. (In this demo I used Scarlett 2i2)

Dear Brother, can you please tell me about "Behringer MIC2200" or DBX which one is Good.
I don't have experience using the 'Behringer MIC2200' sorry about that. Have used many DBX286S though over the year and it is a good unit.
@@JamesMulvanyTV MIC2200 is a microphone pre-amp/equalizer. It is not a compressor, so it's not comparable with the DBX286S. Different function in the processing chain.
Great advise and I will be using it more often. I will create natural pauses, BUT unfortunately the type of content that I do, the attention span is like a gnat. So they lose interest relatively fast.... need to find a happy medium.

I have used all sorts of microphones and I think the simplest one is the beit's the best. Now now simplest to me is one that is not expensive. I used an expensive mic amd to me I did not like how I sounded on it. Another thing amd honestly in my option it should be #1 over equient amd that is that it's the person speaking, how they speak, what style.words they use, and how they come across woth the topic that is what we should worry about the most.

💀 people think I fake my accent when I'm on RUclips (I'm from Africa) but really I just have a radio voice and to be GENUINELY honest when im deep on convos my voice gets deeper
Great video. We have taught, managed and helped launch a lot of vocalists and broadcaster and you sound a LOT better on an LDC mic. Your voice is great and begs for the presence and proximity of a close-mic’d condenser.
FYI, the Aphex channel is a lot better, cleaner and more natural than the DBX unit, albeit is is about $US 1K.
Thanks for your kind words 👍 Yes, also Yellowtec processors are also pretty good but more expensive. Generally these days I don't really use mic processing for videos - sometimes we apply it in post.

The first mic has more depth and richness to me. More warm, organic, and human. Like hearing an analogue record compared to digital CD.

Your DBX settings sound like they're on the edge of CLIPPING/DISTORTED.
ALSO, the SHURE SM7B is the best mic ever (IMHO) for radio & production sessions. (I also own the EV RE-20, Neumann 103, Shure Beta 87A & Shure Beta58)

Hi Jonas, The ideal settings for the DBX286S will vary greatly depending on your personal preferences really. I find the best way to find the perfect sound through the dbx 286s is to just play around with it until you land on a sound that you like!

Yes Finn, it will work with any mixer. You just need to link the microphone to the DBX unit, then the DBX unit to the input for a mic on the mixer.

Absolutely! I'm working on a couple of broadcasting equipment videos that will be released shortly. Make sure you subscribe so you don't miss them!
Why they use compression on the radio broadcasts is because they don't want you to turn the volume knob every song. They compress everything flat, so everything sounds at the same volume. Dynamics completely disappear. Whispering and yelling sounds equally loud.
It was important to be loud on the frequency band to overrule the neigbours on the band, so your station is the one which comes through best. The louder you are, the more change of blowing others away. When you compress everything to death you are maximum loud. Does it sound nice? Not at all. Does it sound fatiguing? Yes for sure!
They use exciters a lot too, which are also very fatiguing for the ears, but make it sound like the loudness switch is turned on.
Compressors were by the way used in sidechaining mode to duck the music when you were speaking. Glad that that technique is used less obviously hearable nowadays. Music being loud, quiet, loud, quiet is so annoying. Reverb/echo isn't used (overdonely) anymore too, luckily.
That DBX 286s made all the difference in the world. When you turned it back off, that 103 started sounding like any other cheap USB mic.
I work in a fast food place and someone today told me I could be a great radio host . Can it be true ? What can I do ?
I use condenser rode broadcaster+symetrix528e(usa) 2 years, dont like dynamic mics.

You can try at least with some EQ-ing and processing. You can achieve quite acceptable results using cheap(er) microphones for sure.
That "perfect radio voice" also comes from the audio being sent through the $15,000 broadcast (Optimod, Omnia, etc) processor before being sent to the transmitter.
this doesn't tell me how to stop having a nervous voice

Nope! You can have a great radio voice with any accent 🙌
How is your breathing not loud?
I wanted to be a radio dj BUT it didn't work out, The guy I talked too at a defunct radio station in Flagstaff,AZ. He said my voice was just too deep, very bland & monotone. I noticed voiced changed when I was 13 and I hated my deep monotone voice One guy told me and he said to me you should be a radio dj but you have too straighten out your cords it takes lots of practice and time. It wasn't easy. As for radio jobs today they are extinct! Only in small towns & cities.
I thought the SM7B was a condenser mic.

Have I ever wanted to? Yes! Have I ever? Probably not! Having been on air for 30+ years I live with it 😬. Just don’t give endless time checks or weather reports and try not to use “that was” and “this is”, and for heavens sake plan your programme so it doesn’t sound like you’re picking out songs/features on the fly 😬👍

A slow and steady voice is a great start, but also consider topics discussed and music played. For example, you wouldn't chat about Love Island and play the new Billie Eilish track on a show targeted towards a more senior audience.

Open show with asking co host "how was ur weekend" end it for some Start with an attention getting statement....Entertaiment within the topic (not just jokes) Ie Tidbits , amazing stats...Be Prepared....Credibility is the toughest to get for newcomers...show uo when scheduled all the time contact me for more anytime
Have to say, I really hate the boomy radio presenter voice. I find a more natural sound far easier to understand and is less taxing on my ears. I'm not saying you shouldn't spend a lot of time making the voice clear, I just find maxing out the bass and treble really off putting. I'm a big fan of dynamic range and don't really listen to the radio anymore simply because all the music these days is so in your face at every frequency. Compression is evil (especially in adverts).

Never try to sound like a "radio announcer". Be YOURSELF! That's the best piece of advice he gave in this video. Unfortunately, you may find that being yourself is more difficult than you might imagine.

Hey can anyone help me with my problem.
I’m a online DJ and I want to start taking live calls in my stream. I’m using a Yamaha mixer, and I have the RANE 4 DJ Controller. I have 2 laptops, one laptop is using Serato software and my other laptop is using only steam lab . I have my iPhone with a lightning connector connected to my rig to device going into my mixer, and my Yamaha is connected to my PC with the stream lab. When I play music on my iPhone, I can hear it through my speakers and I can see it on my meter through stream lab, but the person on the other end talking, I cannot see there voice five foul coming over to stream labs on the power meter. I only can hear and see my voice on the power meter going through stream labs. I can see the power meter going up on the Yamaha but I’m trying to get the person voice to go into stream lab so my viewers can hear them. Can anybody assist or help me out here. I would greatly appreciate it
