Did see it in theaters. I was more excited about this movie than I was for The Force Awakens. The fact that Rogue One is a direct prequel to the classic original movie had me pumped. It didn’t disappoint.
I was also more excited by Rogue One vs Force Awakens. I thought StormTroopers were done after Return of the Jedi and to find out we are still doing that was bizarre so many years after Return of the Jedi. It makes sense in The Mandalorian but Force Awakens seemed like a few steps backwards to everything set up in the end of Return of the Jedi.
@@bjtight98 I did the same thing with my DVD of the film after I saw Rogue One a second time in theaters because I wanted to see more of Carrie Fisher after she had passed away in late December.
I went into this film very nervous, but MAN did it pay off. It was a story that never needed to be told in my opinion, but they did it well enough that it became one of my favorite Star Wars movies.
This was a flawless bridge between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope. Very pleasing, and I enjoyed becoming invested in characters that weren’t immune to death because plot armor.
I've seen all the SW films in the theater (first run - I'm old), and Rogue One is simply the best, both as a film generally and as an entrant in the SW series. I could watch the final 5 minutes on a loop for hours.
Being 45 years old I'm a lifelong fan of the force. Nothing has really caught my attention since the origal trilogy. I've watched all of em but Rouge 1 is the only episode that really came close to giving me that magical feeling of the original. I totally nerded out over it. Love this reaction!!!
We've known it didn't turn out well for this particular band of rebels for forty-some years now, and it still kept me on the edge of my seat. (edited to note that yes, I did see New Hope in 1977, as a very young lad)
Love seeing Shanelle having a total nerd-gasim for the Vader reveal. That's how all of us felt. Our theater went nuts when Vader ignited his red lightsaber and slaughtered the rebels. It was obviously a bit of fan service but I'll take it. Rogue One really treated the OG trilogy with respect and understood the connection with the story.
When his lightsaber came on I let out an audible f-bomb in a matinee theater full of kids and nobody noticed or cared because every one was just as terrified.
This movie might as well have been a war movie from the mid 20th century. It's in the top five SW movies on many a fan's list for a good reason. The narrative is top top top notch. Love your voice Shan!
@@Lethgar_Smith Alec Guinness, anyone.....🤔 Scorsese was right. You need risk for it to be real cinema. Everyone dies in Rouge One. So damn refreshing.
@@MrRezRising that and they did a strong female lead to perfection. too many are pushing women first but don't give them the traits that make strong females!
its my second fav sw movie for that reason, the story is so fresh and reminds me alot of halo reach. just such a good movie, bringing me back to old school war films
"this is a war movie" - exactly what my reaction was when I first saw it. This episode remains my favourite after the original trilogy. The CGI for the faces of Leia and Grand Moff are still a little off-putting, but the rest of it I loved. I also liked how the untroditional start was basically telling you "this is not Star Wars" but as you go along you get more and more until the end where it says Okay, it is not only Star Wars but it jumps straight into the first movie.
I do feel like Tarkin could have been better handled if the bulk of his appearances had been via holoprojector. And when he was in person, he should have mostly had his back to the camera, and been seen in reflections.
The fact that you didn’t catch on to Peter Cushing was a vindication for the effects artists, I think. It’s a little wonky, but I’m not sure I would have caught on if I didn’t know he was dead. As always, your Star Wars reactions are my antidote for the toxic fandom and negativity that has grown up over the years. It’s great to just watch someone enjoy these.
"toxic fandom and negativity" I love that you pointed that out. People act so entitled to entertainment these days, they can't just move on if they don't enjoy something as much as others
I absolutely hate the Grand Moff Tarkin CG Peter Cushing. They should have kept that character in the background. The Leia CG wasn't nearly as bad. I do love this movie, though, despite that terrible decision. And I am surprised Shanelle didn't notice something was off regarding his appearance. It was some of the lousiest CG I've seen.
When I watched this movie I was told that one of the "human" characters was CG, but I didn't know who so it took me a few scenes to figure it out. If I wasn't expecting it I'm not sure I would have caught it at all, I would just have thought the weird moments were just post-production going a bit bad or something, if I saw anything at all.
@@NankitaBR My eyes are really good at catching CGI. It has what some called "the uncanny valley" look. It doesn't look like it is actually with the filmed actors and sets. George Lucas didn't understand why people like myself didn't like the CG Yoda. It's rendering was flat. It had to weight. It was like a video game character being introduced into the real world very superfluously. Did you see Shin Godzilla? Now that is how to make a CGI character. Though there are some instances in that movie when Godzilla is bathed in fire that doesn't look right. But for the most part, I thought it was a real on set effect. Now, I'm not going to claim I haven't fallen for other CGI effects thinking they're real. Some times they are made very convincingly. Yoda and Grand Moff Tarkin weren't in my eyes.
@@Nope2022HugeTheWarningFan I've watched several reactors watch Rogue One now and it seemed like none of them caught on to the fact that Cushing's character was CGI. That's probably helped by the fact that many of them don't remember Tarkin from Ep 4. On the other hand, everyone notices that Leia looks "weird", but then again she's a character that everyone's familiar with, and so they instantly catch on that she must be CGI because of Fisher's age.
3:38 Lucasfilm was bought by Disney in 2012 for $4 Billion. 14:00 You skipped my favourite line just after here. Can't wait for the Andor series. 27:25 Yeah, about that.... 30:36 The score on this movie is incredible. Michael Giacchino knocked it out of the park. 35:57 The best Vader scene and possibly the most badass Star Wars moment put to film. 37:28 It put the war in Star Wars. The honest trailer for this movie is good. Goes into a little bit of detail about the missing shots. ruclips.net/video/t9-pTStLGGo/видео.html
As someone who grew up in the time of the original trilogy, this has become my absolute favorite Star Wars film. The tone, the look, the feel....it's the Star Wars that finally show the WAR. It's too bad the sequel trilogy couldn't keep the momentum from Force Awakens/Rogue One.
Same. I wanted to comment that this has become my absolute favorite SW film but everyone else said it far better than I could so I’ll just play tag and leave it here in the replies. Itch now scratched.
Y'all have terrible taste in films, to rank this higher, or even anywhere near as high, as A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. You're not Star Wars fans. smh
Yes! The trailer had Jyn running on the beach area with the data cassette, and Krennic walking through shallow water with his cape in a very cinematic scene. Plus there was Jyn facing off with a TIE fighter at the alignment controls; which, seemed like it could have been a fake out. The voice over questioning how far would you go while showing Jyn in the Imperial outfit made me feel like we might have lost a lot of gritty Jyn as a spy/double agent/saboteur, or some morally ambiguous plot (shifted to Cassian?). BUT, what we got is still great!
@@ChrisITW04 and Disney will never tell us what they originally had made. :( Kinda like Lucas always refusing to have the original theatrical release of Ep 4 preserved. He's so insistent on making changes and retconning his older works that I wouldn't be surprised to find out he burned all the originals. #hanshotfirst
You have to watch True Grit (2010) Jeff bridges, Matt Damon, hailee stainfeld got an Oscar nomination at 14 in her roll, I’m a pretty big cinema fan and it’s one of my all time favourites. Directed by the cohen brothers
@@jkhoover sorry…ma’lady, if it isn’t too much trouble I highly recommend this motion picture, I’m sorry if I have offended you by exclaiming my admiration for this particular film
@@edwardcornwallis9436 Nope didn't offend me, but reactors get a million suggestions on every video and it's started to annoy me. 99% of the suggestions will never be watched, but I atleast understand if it's related to the movie they're currently watching. Plus, it can't just be a good movie. It has to be a movie that people want to see a reaction to. True Grit would probably be her worst performing video. It just doesn't have a big enough following, IMO.
The John Wayne version was better. Ok, Damon did a better job than Glen Campbell, and Hailee did a better job than Kim Darby, but the Duke was better than the Dude. 😏
this really caught me off guard the first time I watched it. Was getting invested in the characters, liking the story. Wasn't until about midway through that I figured out why we had never heard of any of these characters.
One of my favorite sequences is when the rebels ambush the stormtrooper convoy on Jedha with civilians caught in the crossfire. Very intentionally designed to evoke modern day wars, but with the "good guys" taking on the role of the insurgents. It paints a more complex picture of the rebellion than any of the mainline movies dare to. It really is the only "war" film of the Star Wars saga with regards to how it depicts warfare in general, but at the same time maintains enough of that Star Wars adventure (and almost heist movie energy) throughout to fit in. Love Rogue One.
Also the fact that Cassian murders his informant at the start of the movie. In the episodes you always see the shining heroes of the rebellion, here you see that, though their goal is a good one, their methods quite often aren't. As in real life the difference between a noble rebel and a terrorist depends on your (certain) point of view.
Fun Fact! I worked on this film! Almost ALL of my scenes were filmed in Finland, with two pickup days in Santa Monica. It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life!!!
@@jeffcohnphoto Aw! Thank you! My company provided uniforms and equipment for the film. I got to put on an Imperial uniform and perform in a few scenes as well! It was a blast!
In 1977 my parents hired a baby sitter for the day (I was 7 my sister was 5) and took off on dad's bike to have a day to themselves. They were randomly riding around San Francisco looking for something to do when they saw this movie theater with a long line. People were coming out of the theater and getting back in line. They had not heard of the movie advertised on the marquee but figured if people were coming out of the theater and getting back in line, maybe it was a good movie. It was a good movie. They didn't come out of the theater and get back in line, but they did come out, get on the bike (after a short wait for the effects of the second hand smoke from the theater to ware off, it wasn't tobacco smoke after all) rode home, paid the baby sitter and took us kids to see the movie. The movie was, Star Wars. and it was amazing.
People get very temperamental about this one. It often doesn’t get the love I think it deserves. The story needs to honor the idea that these people were going in on a suicide mission, and it makes you care about the characters within a single film in a way that episodes 7-9 failed in an entire trilogy. This one is top 3 for me, with only episode 3 and episode 5 being better films. I love the pacing, the cinematography, and the Darth Vader and Leah appearances tie things up in a nice little bow.
The Clone Wars animated tv series is a must! I know it’s animation but it’s great. It gives much more back story to Anakin and Obi wan! It also introduces more characters like Ashoka,Rex,Cad Bane and many many more!
Fun musical fact... Michael Giacchino, the composer for this one, used the same musical scale for that opening title music as the main Star Wars theme, but just in a different key. Helping continue the idea that this is a Star Wars movie, but not one of the episodic movies. So it's familiar, but not quite the same.
I enjoyed Rogue One. I'm shocked though that you didn't pick up on the late Peter Cushing being resurrected digitally as Moff Tarkin 22 years after he died. That is one of the biggest bits of trivia for this one in my mind. They did something for Leia as well, but she only had one line, not the extensive bit that Tarkin had.
This is in the style of "suicide mission" movies. Examples include Seven Samurai, The Dirty Dozen, Inglorious Basterds, Saving Private Ryan, Where Eagles Dare, etc. Wonderful film with the last 10 minutes being ever so more impactful because the audience understands (by having already seen A New Hope) the importance of get the plans out at any cost.
About the shift from the “campy” feel of the prequels to this war movie, remember Obi-Wan’s line in A New Hope: “Your father’s light saber… an elegant weapon for a more CIVILIZED age.”
I think that's a real stretch. I think it has more to do with modern audiences being less receptive to camp, especially in their nostalgic favorites. There's a huge section of fans that seem to want any new interpretation of their favorite things to be serious instead of silly.
@@curtisbailey78 No. Sorry. You misinterpreted me. I didn’t want to refer to it as “camp”. I meant she was talking about this movie seeming more gritty.
@@visionaryventures12 That's probably fair, but I'm left confused as to what you meant to imply by the "civilized" quote from Obi-Wan. Perhaps you can elaborate?
@@curtisbailey78 That’s from the line Ben tells Luke after giving him the light saber. He wears a dismayed look on his face. Rogue One takes place after this period he’s talking about. The viewer talked about Rogue One being a war movie, in contrast to the campy feel of the prequels. “Campy”, to me, feels lighter. So, the coming war movie WOULD feel heavier and less civilized.
@@visionaryventures12 I still don't follow you. I don't track how Obi-Wan's feelings about changes in the culture of the galaxy in his lifetime have anything to do with how we perceive the movies as being "campy" or not.
Revisiting your reactions 6 months on. The new series about Kassian Andor is definitely worth a watch. Rogue One was the last Star Wars property I truly enjoyed. Dark, gritty, and with actual stakes. Seeing the beginning of Andor's story is just so good.
This is my second favorite film in the franchise only behind V The Empire Strikes Back and it's very close. This film is so well done and that all the protagonists die makes it more poignant.
I think this is easily the best "Disney" Star Wars and the grittiness is something I wish Star Wars would be more willing to dive into, particularly for maybe a Republic Commando reboot or series.
Saw was the first time a character that originated entirely from one of the recent animated TV shows made the transition to live action. His character first appeared in Clone Wars, and has appeared in Rebels and Bad Batch as well. (Not counting Boba Feet who first appeared in the Holiday Special animated segment) The animated show running at the time was Rebels, and the movie contains a few nods to that show. A droid who's a main character of the series appears in a crowd scene in Yavin (thanks to the fact that they'd commissioned someone to build a real-life version of the droid to promote the series), another character is name-dropped on the PA system, and the hero ship of Rebels appears in the battle at the end. The hammerhead cruisers also first appeared in Rebels, though their design was a nod to a similar design in the game, Knights of the Old Republic (which is no longer canon).
I'd group Grievous in with Boba Fett. Both were originally created for live action movies that were in production at the time. While they both made their first appearance in animated form, the animation was using a character that was already created for an upcoming movie. So they didn't originate entirely from the animation. Saw was created for the animated series with no intent of having him in an upcoming movie. But a later live action production decided to include the character.
If you still want to get into more Star Wars live action. I would recommend Star wars Solo, The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett all are very entertaining. Obi Wan Kenobi series May 25, 2022
Loved your reaction to this movie. Tarkin (as well as Leia) was a digital recreation as Peter Cushing from a New Hope had passed a while ago. I remember watching it for the first time and being so amazed but sad when I saw Leia at the end as she passed only 2 weeks after this released in the UK.
I'm so glad you got to see this. The movie was an excellent bridge between films 3 and 4 and filled in some gaps with great little details fans truly enjoyed. Great reaction from you.
If you to have that same feeling of “War”, you could find it in “The Clone Wars” animated TV show (even though it might be a bit slow at the beginning). It has also a very serious tone about the complexity of war etc… that being said, if you watch it, i suggest you to choose the chronological and not the release order :)
The Force surrounds us all so many have been able to use it to their advantage. The Jedi, The Inquisitors, The Mortis God's, Chirrut, Bendu and Ezra Bridger. You don't have to be a Jedi to you the force. Obi Wan: It's an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us It binds the galaxy together.

Good comments as always. I’m not really a Star Wars fan but my son played this movie for us and I enjoyed it. I like how the film ends mixing with the start of a new hope.
Absolutely like a classic war movie. Very well executed. My only minor gripe about this one was they did reshoots with major changes which meant most of the scenes in the trailer got tossed, which was really distracting the first time I saw it, waiting for scenes that never happened. But wow what a fun addition to the SW Universe. Best space battle IMO.
LOL yeah. Rogue One has one of the most extreme cases of "Trailers always lie." that I've ever seen. Usually, it's just cleverly edited scenes and dialogue that misrepresents a movie's contents. Rogue One's trailers uses outright deleted scenes.
One thing that always struck me about the Vader reveal is that he's purely in shadow until he ignites his lightsaber. Meaning all the little blinkies on his chest are turned off. You know, the life support system of the suit that keeps him alive. Because Anakin is still such a drama llama that he will literally risk suffocating to death solely to make a dramatic entrance.
Interesting that you early on described the format as a spy movie. That’s literally the movie. Rebel spies steal the Death Star plans. It’s sort of James Bond meets Star Wars, which is ironic given Daniel Craig getting an unseen cameo in one of the Star Wars movies you haven’t yet seen.
Rogue One is basically an old WWII movie that's set in the SW universe. It's disappointing if you're looking for a traditional Star Wars film, but delightful if you can take it for what it is.
Top video and great channel! I saw this one three times in the cinema! I do community radio here in the U.K. I kind of gave you a mention on my show when I played tracks from the Trainspotting soundtracks! I had remembered how good it was after watching your reaction! Anyway, good British accent and keep up the good work, Ms. Riccio. 👍
“What’s good?” I’ll tell you what’s good, Mirror Mask (2005). This Jim Henson film is considered the spiritual sequel to Labyrinth (1986). The art and cinematography will feed your inspiration. Please consider adding this film to your list, thanks👍
I love how they subverted our expectations right from the start by leaving out The Text Crawl. It was a great way to shake up The Fan Base and a great way for Disney to let everyone know that this wasn't your grandfathers Star Wars. Especially since Mandalorian came out I'm overall happy with their direction of the franchise. Rouge 1 is my favorite behind New Hope.
I was SO worried when we heard about all the reshoots. I think the movie suffers a little bit as a result, with Saw Guerrera's inclusion seeming almost pointless and Jyn's flip to then from then back to Rebel sympathies giving me whiplash, especially at the rebel HQ. Altogether though, it's easily one of the best Star Wars movies (beating every prequel and Force Awakens IMO) and gave me very high hopes for Last Jedi... which were promptly squashed
Great reaction, many have called it the Saving Private Ryan of Star Wars films... I think this and the Mandalorian are still my favs in the Disney era and as a Gen-Xer.
Regarding your intro, LA Confidential is one of my all time favorite movies, of any genre. There Will Be Blood is also a slightly underrated masterpiece of acting. I hope you react to them on the channel Shanelle, I'd love to get your take on them. And yes, Rogue One really puts the "war" in Star Wars.
"Death Troopers" huh? Hadn't heard that name before. When The Mandalorian featured its Dark Troopers I had looked that up to refresh myself on what they were because I knew I'd heard that name before, and the summary from their appearances throughout various original canon (or "legends" if you prefer) is that the earliest versions of them were partially cybernetic soldiers. Humans given a few mechanical upgrades to improve their combat efficiency. (I think the tech is related to the process that gave Vader his cybernetic limbs (plus his life support system) as well?) But over time their Imperial masters saw the human element in them as a weakness / liability and sought to make them more and more mechanical until eventually they were just skipping the organic components entirely and making pure droids. The Mandalorian's Dark Troopers apparently took inspiration from that end result in the original canon. They're just 100% droid. No question about it. But I get the impression skimming through a bit about Death Troopers that their place in the Disney canon is more in line with the human side of the original canon's Dark Troopers, when they were an elite special forces unit. Although maybe less reliant on the cybernetics.
@@MuljoStpho actually i would say the new shadow troopers are just disneys interpretation of what were earlier known as shadow troopers. elite stortroopers dressed in all black armor. altough shadow troopers wore just all black stormtrooper armor these new death troopers have a unique armor design. you are right about the old dark troopers. in the old canon, pre disney aka "the legends" as they are now called dark troopers first appeared in a 90s video game star wars the dark forces. there the dark trooper phase 1 is just a moderately sized skinny droid armed with a batton and a shield. a some sort of crude test version only appearing in one level. phase 2 is a big droid and kind of a tank and the most common of the group. phase 3 dark trooper is a massive tank like droid that could also be worn as a giant exosuit armor. later, however n the 2004 battlefront game the phase 0 was added to the mix which were now suopposed to have been the origins of the dark trooper project. these were the only dark troopers pre disney that were cybord, part machine part man as a weird fringe project to try to bring some folk back to fighting shape though it backfired and it didnt end well for the test subjects. as you mentioned these utilized the same procedures that were used in darth vaders suit. these peoples limbs and organs etc over half of their physical being were replaced with machinery and since this was often done against their will most could not cope with it anded their own lives. now in the disney canon we did see some kind of dark troopers and it was mentioned that this is the first version without a human element but we dont really know what the previous version entailed exactly
This movie finally gave us a war in the stars. I absolutely loathe episode 7 so I wasn't that excited for this but I cried in theaters this film is so amazing it gave me everything I wanted and I still feel this is the only good thing that has come out of Disney Star Wars theatrical projects.
I saw this in IMAX and it was jaw-dropping. This is exactly the kind of standalone Star Wars film with (mostly) new characters Disney should have stuck with.
I love K2SO's deadpan humor in this. He seems like the anti C-3PO. I was disappointed he dies a hero's death, but I also understood that the main characters of this movie die at the end so there are no loose ends or plot holes leading into New Hope.
One thing I love about this movie is the attention to details. For example, at 26:20 you can hear two stormtroopers chatting about the T-15 being marked obsolete. That's a call back from ANH : In the scene where Knenobi disable the Death Star's tractor beam, we see two other stormtroopers chatting about the T-16. Although we don't know what T-15 and T-16 are, that is the kind of easter eggs only hardcore starwars fan would notice and that shows you how much Gareth Edwards love for the franchise, how much attention to details and how much love for the fans he put in this movie.
I love the first Teaser Trailer. I was confused seeing this film and wondering why there were missing battle sequences and dialogue were missing but we knew there were extensive reshoots on this film before seeing it because I had watched Collider Videos news about this film. I knew Vader and Tarkin would appear but was surprised by Rebel pilots from A New Hope, the two from the Cantina in A New Hope and Princess Leia's adopted father appearing in this film.
25:27 "shes asking them to die". You summed up what is so amazing about this movie. it adds gravity to the heroics. You made me so happy when you said that.
There was a part in the original trailer for Rogue One where all the rebels are about to take the ship out of the Rebel Base to go to Scarif and get the Death Star Plans. And Jyn stands up and says something like, "That's what I do. I rebel." and each member of the Rogue One squad stands up and says "I Rebel!" to show their allegiance. Well, this of course got changed for the final version of the movie. BUT, I found a Rogue One T-Shirt at Target that has "I rebel" written about a dozen times down the front of the shirt in reference to this shot from the trailer - that DID NOT end up in the movie. I LOVE that shirt and will never get rid of it.
I have very much appreciated your Star Wars reacts, in particular your prequel takes: people tend to love or hate them but the truth is that there is good and bad. That's why I'd like you to review the Sequel Trilogy as well, I would like your opinions on something so controversial. Thanks for your videos, hope to see you get to all the other Star Wars movies and shows!
I knew from the beginning that I was going to love this movie because I already knew what it was going to be about. Also, knowing what came after this made the deaths not surprising. And viewers knew that their deaths were not in vain.
I did get to see this in a theatre, I absolutely loved it! It might seem strange, but my clearest impression from first seeing this movie was the appearance of the AT-AT's they seemed almost comical in the early movies, but looked genuinely terrifying in this one. The sheer realism of the visuals in this combined with the frequent deaths of main characters gave this movie such a dark tone that it drew me in more than any other Star Wars film.
Thanks, I enjoyed your reaction - again. This is a strong movie and a fine entry in the franchise. And having seen SW: A New Hope in 1977, and a few times since, I did notice the connections in casting, including digital casting. Btw, actor Donnie Yen, who plays Chirrut Imwe, the blind, Force sensitive fighter in this story, has a wild filmography as a Hong Kong action star. If you read subtitles in flicks, check out a few of his movies: Ip Man, Hero, 14 Blades, Iron Monkey, etc.
29:24 omg I never got that it was the nickname her father gave her. In German instead of stardust he calls her "kleiner stern" ("small star" so basically what the deathstar is) when I watched the movie I thought she just guessed lol
I'm so excited that you watched this before any of the other new Star Wars movies, this is number three on my list of all-time favs, Empire Strikes Back, New Hope and this are my order for top 3. You asked if this was George Lucas approved, it is the only one of the modern movies that he likes. In one of the original three movies you hear a reference to ' a lot of good people died to get us these plans,' that is where they came up with the idea to write this story.
i could go on and on about this movie....thanks to it i was able to live again what i lived at the age of 10...1977, when i got hit by Star Wars...and not knowing how much it would rock my world even at 10 year old...wish i had a friend like you to discuss those great films..your eyes and experience on film making, did not have those friends back then..thanks for your react... I love watching your reactions to these movies! By the time Rogue One came out, a huge portion of the fanbase became so negative online. The hatred for Kathleen kennedy, and Disney was all you could read about online. legions of fans started talking about protesting all Star Wars content until Kennedy was removed from her position, before Rogue One even came out fans complained about it. As a fan of movies and the Star Wars universe that wanted to keep an open mind and accept what we were given and try to find the things we did like about the films, you couldn't enjoy talking to other fans about them. Chances are you would get a very hostile or bitter response. Its nice that finally all this time later, new fans are enjoying them and reacting the way many of us wished the other half of the fan base did. These are great films, maybe not what we expected or always wanted, but still great! Its a shame so many fans didn't see this and other newer star war films, they are missing out.
Yeah most of my star wars nerd friends loved this movie as did I, the movies that came after for my group of friends was straight trash. When Mark Hamill himself says he wasn't a fan of the trilogy or how they wrote Luke, then we definitely have a problem. Disney knows it fucked up with latest trilogy and did right by star wars with the Mandolarian show
This one managed to take the "Star Wars" Motif, and make it feel a bit more Adult, instead of the "For Children" portion (which was so overused in the Prequels). Could have used more Aliens, but I suppose the "Main Cast" of every "Star Wars" has, at best, one Token non Human as part of the Crew.

If you're trying to bash ep1-3 you're in the wrong place, there are other channel's where you can spit that nonsense. Because most would instantly lunge at you.
Great reaction Video, Shanelle.! I saw Rogue One in the theatre on opening night. The theater was packed and it got really quiet towards the end. A lot of people were stunned by the fates of the main characters, myself included.
OH yay! This is if not my favourite Star Wars up there in my Top Three! I love so many things about it. The cast are all great, the story is brilliant the visuals are such a treat for life long star wars fans (I nearly screamed when I saw Red and Gold Leader from ANH). But one of the best things about it is, although the Empire is typically evil still, the Rebels are not squeeky clean. They fight dirty and aren't afraid from time to time to do the "wrong" thing, which we don't see in the six core films. I also went into the film saying "If they had balls they'd kill everyone off, but there's no way they'll do it." I think it was about when Baze died that I was like "Oh shit, no they're going to do it." And I have *so* much respect for this film being willing to do that. Also love your Felicity Jones impression. TFA wasn't great, but it hadn't gone quite off the rails like TLJ had, and I wasn't as jaded with Disney Star Wars movies. So though the news of re-shoots had me nervous, I was really excited, especially because Cassian Andor is the closest we get in the Disney shows to Kyle Katarn (Who is second only to Meetra Surik in my "Favorite Jedi" list). If this film had come out when Solo did, I'd have been a lot less enthusiastic. But, even so: ANH, ESB, RO and Mandalorian are really peak Star Wars (with an honourable mention to the Siege of Mandalore finale to the Clone Wars).
I believe this was the second Star Wars movie after Disney bought it. The Force Awakens was pretty much just a redo of A New Hope so not much to talk about there but then this one was good and gave everybody hope that Disney wouldn't screw up Star Wars. Sadly Disney did screw up Star Wars.
4:07 There's scolly text in MY version of it. I re-edited this into "A New Hope" and created a new "scrolly text" for it. And for the lightsaber duel between Vader and Obi-Wan, I used a recreated version found on youtube under the title of "Star Wars SC 38 Reimagined".
After watching your reaction Ive decided to stop pretending that this isn’t the best Star Wars movie. I’m no longer afraid to say that this beats even the originals.
I have to say Rougue One is my fav star wars film of them all idk I love the style the story the visuals.... Some OG fans will disagree but from the first time I loved this movie
This is my favorite. Filled a lot of holes that I have had since 1977. I have seen every Star Wars movie in theaters. I was excited for this one. I am so happy you have become a Star Wars Nerd. and I am a huge fan of your laugh. Looking forward to your next review,
Sadly, I feel that Shanelle (along with most other viewers) would have far less questions if they just watched the 133 episodes of the animated series The Clone Wars. LOL
My mom and I planned to see this film like two weeks after it released, because we were just too busy to go any earlier. It just so happened the day we had bought tickets for was the day Carrie Fisher passed. We were sniffling messes leaving the theatre after that ending!
Along with The Empire Strikes Back and The Mandalorian, THIS is peak Star Wars. It's was so insane to see the franchise recover SO massively after the Prequels, and discover just how gorgeous and real and good Star Wars can be. It's a complete 180 from the godawful writing, plots, characters, borderline racist caricatures, and aggravating nonsense of the Prequels being made from 4 year olds. Like, hi, Star Wars is a war movie again. Remember The Empire Strikes Back, and how that was peak Star Wars? What if we just made more of that? And it turned out just as awesome as that sounds.
They're all to aware in writing and pacing that we know generally how the movie ends. But instead of dealing with the forgone conclusion that they will steal and deliver the plans no matter what by slowing down and developing the characters, they're violently propelled from action to action with no real actual or natural progression in relationships. Jyn goes from yelling at Cassian to quoting him passionately and Cassian goes from cold blooded killer to organizing a suicide squad for her because he chose not to kill the one person he was specifically ordered to kill, which was her father. And he had good reasons for not killing him, I'm sure Bor gullet was used, despite him making people go crazy, to learn the truth. Yet nothing comes of that truth gathering scene. When the X-Wings attacked Jyn's fathers position, we're told that they can't be called off because they're already committed. Nonsense. No shots were fired yet, and there's apparently instantaneous two way interstellar communications in Star Wars and with that squadron, so there's plenty of time to call them off. Even if there wasn't, there's nothing to prevent one of the X-Wings from hovering over the pad for a few seconds and sweeping the pad clear of enemies while his squad mates covered him. The end battle scenes went from "Cool visuals, I guess," to, "Seriously?" The inclusion of Red and Gold Leaders, obviously limited to what they could cull from cut angles meaning the almost the same exact lines from A New Hope was jarring. Then there's the out of place Mos Eisley jerks somehow being on Jedha, being jerks on Jedha because they have to cram some random cameo in the movie, just for them to leave Jedha immediately after being jerks and going straight to Tattoine, without freaking out over almost being killed by the Death Star. Pretty much everyone died in an explosion immediately after serving their one purpose in the movie, which was to flip a switch. And some of those switches were outside and exposed to the elements for no reason. And the antenna was out of alignment for no reason, and somehow transmitted to everyone yet just the rebel flagship, which had Leia's ship in it for some reason. And let's not forget that C-3PO and R2-D2 were in the Yavin hangar when everyone left yet on Leia's ship when it got boarded not much longer later. Also, the battle scenes was ridiculous. The rebels had the element of surprise, yet they didn't immediately start shooting everything on sight upon exiting lightspeed. There was no general plan and at most minimal coordination. Orders were given sporadically, instead of rapid fire. There was no shooting between the capital ships and minimal firing from the capital ships. There was no bombing or bombardment of the Imperial structure surrounding the shield opening. There were no squadrons of fighters firing volleys of torpedoes, just random fighters almost casually flying about and shooting at the occasional target. There were a total of 3 star destroyers in orbit around Scarif and yet not one deployed any troops to reinforce the surface. Instead, they just let the surface fend for itself and eventually Tarkin destroyed the Empire's own base, despite only some rebels being on the surface and despite the rebels already getting the plans. And fuck the rest of the data stored there, right? That's not important anymore for some reason. Vader's scene at the end was supposed to be orgasmicilly amazing, yet it's a let down. He dramatically took his time and turned off his life support and almost casually walked down the hall killing fools, instead of being mister badass sith and using the Force to brush everyone to the side and at least trying to Force grab the plans or using the Force to at least try stopping Leia's ship. Then he's standing in the vacuum of space like his suit is rated for that.
@@JBWinter last jedi is just horrible and rise of skywalker wasn't much better as they had to try and fix last jedi and make the last one. Thank god i grew up with the originals
Thanks for doing this movie. I'm happy you enjoyed it. This is by far my favorite SW film. K2's my favorite droid also. Great job. Love the trivia. You said something about "No Country For Old Men". I can't wait. 👍👍
I saw this in the theater on release day, which was two days after I'd had surgery on my shoulder. I was on pretty heavy-duty painkillers, so as I was sitting in the comfortable reclining seat in the theater, I could feel myself starting to nod off. But I flat-out refused to do so and spent pretty much the second half of the movie forcing my eyes to stay open.
After I saw this in theaters, I went home n popped in the Blue Ray for Ep4!!
@@mythdusterds You my feelings and thoughts precisely. I really want the sequel trilogy to go away
@@richlisola1 It's just a bad dream.
That was very similar to my reaction. When first announced, I wasn't sure it was a story dying to be told. But I love it.
This was a flawless bridge between Revenge Of The Sith and A New Hope. Very pleasing, and I enjoyed becoming invested in characters that weren’t immune to death because plot armor.
When the film was announced and only described as a star wars version of "Saving Private Ryan", I had high expectations and they delivered.
I've seen all the SW films in the theater (first run - I'm old), and Rogue One is simply the best, both as a film generally and as an entrant in the SW series. I could watch the final 5 minutes on a loop for hours.
I'm an Xer who saw "IV-VI" in theaters, Rogue One was the sequel, prequel, whatever that most of us wanted.
Being 45 years old I'm a lifelong fan of the force. Nothing has really caught my attention since the origal trilogy. I've watched all of em but Rouge 1 is the only episode that really came close to giving me that magical feeling of the original. I totally nerded out over it. Love this reaction!!!
I agree with you 100%
Second that
heh "rouge"

As a Star Wars fan since I saw the first one in 1977, the ending brought tears to my eyes.
Yup! FormerJedi/Sith Lord, and a bunch of meat shields. Awesome, but it was Vader's second best one-sided slaughter, right after that security holo.
Lifelong SW fan here... Gen Xer... this is in the top 3 they've ever done, and I love them all for different reasons.
This movie might as well have been a war movie from the mid 20th century. It's in the top five SW movies on many a fan's list for a good reason. The narrative is top top top notch.
Love your voice Shan!

I'm assuming they're going to eventually do a deep fake reissue
But it *IS* a Star Wars movie, FFS. The untraditional opening sucked.
No it didn’t.
@@f0rth3l0v30fchr15t however, I liked nods like his feet not being visible in most shots and, the voice was spot on
The fact that you didn’t catch on to Peter Cushing was a vindication for the effects artists, I think. It’s a little wonky, but I’m not sure I would have caught on if I didn’t know he was dead. As always, your Star Wars reactions are my antidote for the toxic fandom and negativity that has grown up over the years. It’s great to just watch someone enjoy these.
"toxic fandom and negativity"
I love that you pointed that out.

100% agree!

Y'all have terrible taste in films, to rank this higher, or even anywhere near as high, as A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. You're not Star Wars fans. smh
44:59 The original version had survivors. The writers were surprised when the studio encouraged them to kill everyone.
BUT, what we got is still great!

this really caught me off guard the first time I watched it. Was getting invested in the characters, liking the story. Wasn't until about midway through that I figured out why we had never heard of any of these characters.
So no one ever mentions dead people?

I loved "Heroes". Esp Season 1. So good. That and "Chuck" were weekly 2 hour appointment TV for me.
The Clone Wars animated tv series is a must! I know it’s animation but it’s great. It gives much more back story to Anakin and Obi wan! It also introduces more characters like Ashoka,Rex,Cad Bane and many many more!
The opening takes place 10 years after Revenge Of The Sith, while the rest of the movie takes place a week before the events of A New Hope.
The very end is the beginning of A New Hope.
He wrote the score in six weeks, from what I have read.
Same guy wrote the Medal of Honor: Frontline soundtrack
I enjoyed Rogue One. I'm shocked though that you didn't pick up on the late Peter Cushing being resurrected digitally as Moff Tarkin 22 years after he died. That is one of the biggest bits of trivia for this one in my mind. They did something for Leia as well, but she only had one line, not the extensive bit that Tarkin had.
Completely agree. He was sooooo well done - even better than Laya
I always figured Leia was referring to to money when she casually mentioned the price they paid to get the plans.
4:43 - "It feels so serious" - that's why I love this film so much!
Yet still bad
This is my second favorite film in the franchise only behind V The Empire Strikes Back and it's very close. This film is so well done and that all the protagonists die makes it more poignant.
I think this is easily the best "Disney" Star Wars and the grittiness is something I wish Star Wars would be more willing to dive into, particularly for maybe a Republic Commando reboot or series.
Saw was the first time a character that originated entirely from one of the recent animated TV shows made the transition to live action. His character first appeared in Clone Wars, and has appeared in Rebels and Bad Batch as well. (Not counting Boba Feet who first appeared in the Holiday Special animated segment)
The animated show running at the time was Rebels, and the movie contains a few nods to that show.
Other than Grievous? Grievous was in Clone Wars first, then Ep 3
It's testament to the brilliant writing and acting of this film that most of my favourite Star Wars characters are in this film. Love this film.
HERE WE GO! Can't wait to see her reaction to the last few scenes of the movie.

Dude, that whole final act was constant tears in my eyes, but seeing Carrie was just too much. An experience I will never forget.
For me it was like the end of an era / end of childhood. As I saw the film in the evening, and she passed away the next day.

At 35:05, if you look at the bottom left of the screen, you a rebel ship about to have the worst "Oopsies" ever.😂😂
Yessssss! That movies is beyond underrated and brilliant!
Shanelle-"No scrolly text? It's already different."
Rogue One Movie- "I rebel!"
I saw A New Hope in the cinema at age 12, saw this in the cinema and it made me feel 12. Loved it
Regarding your intro, LA Confidential is one of my all time favorite movies, of any genre. There Will Be Blood is also a slightly underrated masterpiece of acting. I hope you react to them on the channel Shanelle, I'd love to get your take on them.
And yes, Rogue One really puts the "war" in Star Wars.
Vader's final scene was the deadliest game of "Keep Away", 😂😂. Vader was probably thinking to himself "Well... I'm in the Emperor's dog house now.".
The stormtroopers in black armor are actually called "Dark Troopers". Elite and quite deadly troopers that can actually HIT their target 😆
dark troopers are a whole other thing. these are death troopers
The slap from K2 to Cassian was ad libbed by Alan Tudyk. If you look at Cassian’s face you can see he had to cover up his surprise reaction/laugh
This movie finally gave us a war in the stars. I absolutely loathe episode 7 so I wasn't that excited for this but I cried in theaters this film is so amazing it gave me everything I wanted and I still feel this is the only good thing that has come out of Disney Star Wars theatrical projects.
Totally agree with all of that!
I saw this in IMAX and it was jaw-dropping. This is exactly the kind of standalone Star Wars film
with (mostly) new characters Disney should have stuck with.
I also liked the ground war perspective we got in the Solo movie.
So far is the only movie I've seen in 4DX and was great with all the wind & rain effects on Eadu.
me and another guy saw it premiere day here in denmark! It got the great feel of The Empire Strikes Back!the hallway scene is amazing!
I love K2SO's deadpan humor in this. He seems like the anti C-3PO. I was disappointed he dies a hero's death, but I also understood that the main characters of this movie die at the end so there are no loose ends or plot holes leading into New Hope.
Rogue One is a classic war movie set in the Star Wars universe.
26:23 Storm Trooper gossip 😂 another great reaction to a great film!
This meshed with the others so well, and in a serious sense, that I actually like this one best!
You made me so happy when you said that.
you pick up on all of the small details, its great, that was just the point that got me in the comment section.
The blind man is played by Hong Kong legend Donnie Yen.....Set to be in an upcoming John Wick film as well
There was a part in the original trailer for Rogue One where all the rebels are about to take the ship out of the Rebel Base to go to Scarif and get the Death Star Plans.
Would love to see the Sequels, I'm just very into the world. I think it's the most fun!
I knew from the beginning that I was going to love this movie because I already knew what it was going to be about.
Also, knowing what came after this made the deaths not surprising. And viewers knew that their deaths were not in vain.
Absolutely loved going to see this in theaters!
"I have a bad feeling about this" is the Force telling the good guys there is danger ahead. It even speaks to droids.
As many times as I've seen this, it didn't occur to me until this viewing that K2 getting cut off is probably intentional foreshadowing
Nice reaction, Shanelle! I love the Heroes reference too... ;)
Arggg so good it was...
Uhm, most people liked Rogue One, it was the releases of TLJ, Solo, and TRoS that caused the, deserved, hatred for Kathleen Kennedy.
Yeah most of my star wars nerd friends loved this movie as did I, the movies that came after for my group of friends was straight trash. When Mark Hamill himself says he wasn't a fan of the trilogy or how they wrote Luke, then we definitely have a problem. Disney knows it fucked up with latest trilogy and did right by star wars with the Mandolarian show
@@jramostt86 that's an opinion for sure. thanks for sharing.
@@dernwine I do not agree with you and I also think she will enjoy the new trilogy. Don't bother responding, Im not interested.
@@rwrocksteady Wow, who is being negative now? You might not agree with me, but that doesn't change the truth.
LOVE your honest, fresh reviews! Keep 'em coming! You're GREAT! :)
All of Star Wars is for children
It was not over used in the prequels at all, what drugs you taking? Ep3 is literally the darkest movie in the series.
@@GreenFalcon926 Jar Jar, Baby Anny, Moronic Love Story only a 6 year old would believe (Mah Babysitter Luvs mE!), Pointless Merchandising / Aliens that only exist to sell Stuffed Animals, culminating in E3 Anny the Immature Tantrum king.
That's not even mentioning the Glaring Plot hole of the Trilogy, if the "Good" Jedi are everywhere, and the "Bad" Jedi only have Two people...
What Moron would want to "Bring Balance to the Force"? By what... massacring all but Two of the "Good" guys? And the Jedi think this is a Prophecy they want to happen.
Even E3 can only be considered "Dark" if viewed through the lens of a Child.
@@mineturdle6518 Teens, aside from the Prequels.
Which is why they overdid the Childish nonsense.
@@lokithecat7225 Child Anakin has been explained countless times. Lucas wanted to show innocence. By having Anakin being 10, the impact of him leaving his mother would be greater. Makes perfect sense unless you're gullible. As for the love story, yeah, ep2 romance wasn't great, but the romance between Han and Leia in ep5 was kinda creepy when you look at it. As for the balance prophecy, it's been a prophecy in the Jedi Order for thousands of years, it didn't suddenly appear in ep1. The was never always 2 Sith, this has been explained so many times. Do you even know your Star Wars lore? You clearly don't otherwise you would already know the answer to that.
I saw this in the theater with my dad, I grew to love the characters, but it's too bad not one of them survived In The Original Trilogy.
Shanelle: "can you be self taught? can you read how to be a jedi for dummies?"
Me: wait till she watches the sequel trilogy... 🤫
I grew up on Star Wars & this is by far my favourite Star Wars movie. I love the maturity & grit they went with, plus K2S0 was perfectly casted.
After watching your reaction Ive decided to stop pretending that this isn’t the best Star Wars movie. I’m no longer afraid to say that this beats even the originals.
It really IS great!! A slightly different flavor on Star Wars for sure!
I have to say Rougue One is my fav star wars film of them all idk I love the style the story the visuals.... Some OG fans will disagree but from the first time I loved this movie
Please watch STAR TREK! 🖖
LOL
Lol true. Clone wars is the main pillar of support for any Star Wars content released after 2008
Saw G. Figures prominently in both The Clone Wars and Rebels and offers so much background to this story.
And he had good reasons for not killing him, I'm sure
Bor gullet was used, despite him making people go crazy, to learn the truth.

For me, this is the best of the Star Wars movies. It was the first movie to put the "wars" in Star Wars.
4:02 - That's it! The next time I'm in a Star Wars convo I'm calling the intro crawl the "scrolly text"! XD
Really loved your reaction to the Vader scenes. I had quite the grin myself when I saw this in the theater.
