So here we all are, watching a screen learning about how screens are scrambling our brains. Sweet.
How ironic right !…
My first thought before watching. However, would be a good challenge! Like a fast or something for a few weeks.
Take the information from the screen and develop a game plan to start creating healthy habits and boundaries.
I remember going to the doctor's office and reading the magazines in the waiting room and riding the bus and just looking out the window. Back in the day we were able to be "bored" without really being bored
Bleak. You can still do this.
My daughter now says “I’m bored” like it’s a disease
Im 19 and I truly believe that social media is the greatest and worst technology ever created. It holds way too much unstable power and destroys social normality. Scary world we live in
I’m 20, I just quit all my social media accounts. It’s so crazy how many hours of the day I’ve gained. Now I’m learning to play instruments, and I have time paint like I used to love to do. It’s truly been life changing gaining my days back.
@madisonkemmerer8009 God bless, stay strong
Try and go outside more often. Fresh air & Sunshine will help. Even better, if you can find a lake, River, or Ocean will help you relax…
An enjoyable part is "normal"
now feels enchanted. Like, putting down your phone and walking outside feels magical.
Hi there
Am I having deyjavu as 18 mins and I.m on repeat?😮 NOT got time.e for this!
I’m 23, married, pregnant…I deleted my all my social media a few months ago and I have never felt more clear headed. I have more time, I can think, I can get back to things I love.
Yet you use the internet and youtube. You cant avoid everything. 😂
@Lietotajvards9 If you have the will power, you can use RUclips as a really useful resource and not just a social media replacement
I think this should be implied, but some dont possess the ability to hear/see/figure out implied facts......SO.....
She didnt say she got off the internet all together. She deleted the social media aka time suck apps. Sure. RUclips can do the same. She deleted what was the problem for HER.
@Lietotajvards9 You tube can be seen like television in the old days, i.e. you put a video to watch and you cook, you clean the house you do something else. Sure, it is still a screen, sure it still fills your head, however it is not like social media on the phone which can eat up your day and you don't do anything else but be glued to your screen.
@Fokas-n8t totally agree with you. I love RUclips and learn a lot with the great podcasts. I'm not glued to social media for hours, I still can be productive while listening to a great podcast , like this one 😊
Thank you for the incredible insight!
871 days no alcohol 🏆
Stay strong
Congrats. Keep it up
That is the most amazing thing I've heard in a while. Congratulations!
Great :) keep going. You got this
I drive long distances without music or podcasts, just quiet time and enjoyment of seeing the sights even in a urban area. Helps so much with the overwhelming amount of input we constantly receive.
That's great. I'm a truck driver, and I have a degree in cybersecurity(still trying to get a job in that) so I'd still be on a screen.... I dunno how to get rid of screens any more. I used to do what you did back when I worked construction and didn't have a smartphone. I drove a lot and never even had music on. Now I don't know how I'd drive without it. It bails me out
@@droptozro I have chronic fatigue and chronic pain. I use music to keep focused when I drive.
@ Ouch. Rough. If not from accident/incident, have you considered looking at food inflammation for bringing down pain and fatigue? I found out cashews for example were ruining my joints when I tried carnivore diet for a major elimination diet for just 1 month.
I am 70 this year. I have told my adult children, this confusion and forgetfulness is all from the phone. I believe it even more now!!
I’m off it. I can’t remember my day yesterday. Ive been worried I am getting dementia. All this phone is doing is robbing my time, ruining my brain and the political climate is getting me frustrated. Enough.
Yes! According to the internet I have adhd. All the signs and symptoms. I know in my heart it's the phone use.
I believe it too and yet I have such a hard time being off of it even though I know the negative effects it has. It’s truly addicting.
As an online tutor. Im on my laptop 6 days a week. My side hustle is house and pet sitting. So, when Im not house or pet sitting, I have a rule that EVERY Sunday I leave my laptop and phone at home, walk out the door and go visit friends or go to the beach (or what ever, to get out of the house and away from ALL my screens.
Very good rule.🥳
I’m writing my undergrad thesis on this issue, so excited to watch this. Thank you!!!! This issue needs all the attention it can get.
Thank you for this. The only social media I use is RUclips and I have headphones and I listen, I don’t have the phone in my hand ever. I leave it down all the time. I am also on permanent do not disturb. I have the same mentality as this. I’m the one who decides when I use the device. And this episode solidifies my opinion on this. My children get so angry with me about no screens. I have a 14 yr old and she gets so upset about it. I tell her, we don’t have long here. I don’t want to give away our time to something else other than what’s important. Talking, laughing, cooking, reading on paper, writing on paper, hugging, tickling, dancing. These are what runs our home. And the occasional fights! Hahah ❤ thank you for this ! Delony. I enjoy your show tremendously. Yall work so well together. It’s a great time when I listen. Thank you! ❤
I deleted my socials a month or two ago, except for RUclips. It made me not only anxious, but physically sick as well. I have POTS. I was monitoring my heart rate to keep track of this and I went to open my Facebook app because I got a notification. As I opened the app, my heart rate jumped up 20 BPM. I deleted it that day. I get better sleep, I’m nicer to my kids, more present for my husband, more active, less anxious, less depressed, and amazingly, my dizziness and nausea related to POTS has decreased also as I spend less time on my phone. I wish we’d never gone further than flip phones
So true I've seen it ruin my life and I health and the worst thing I've done this to my self.
Here’s how I see it: balance is essential because completely avoiding screens seems unrealistic long term. However, data like this highlights the mental benefits of unplugging. Maybe vacations could focus more on screen-free time, and daily routines could be adjusted to include more unplugged time blocks. Making this shift requires a conscious effort to change your lifestyle. We’re seeing time and time again that prioritizing time away from screens can greatly benefit both our physical and mental well-being.
I've given up social media for Lent in the past, and I noticed a significant difference. Even though I still work on a computer daily, making even a small change can have a big impact.
I do that too, during Lent. Always feel better afterwards.
I don't have kids, but when you were talking about not knowing how to be a dad from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., that just struck me in a weird way, but the best way.
This is so true. At 20, I feel free when I don’t have my phone with me and it’s literally experiencing life for what it is.
I don’t have social media because I love going outside and meeting and talking to people And rescuing animals 🐾🐕🐾
I'd like to meet people, too, but they're all busy staring down at their phones and I don't want to be around that!
Thsi needs so much more attention than what it’s getting
I started putting my phone on do not disturb about six months ago. I was tired of being beaten down by notifications. Great talk Dr
I do it for the past 10 years and no FB. I feel great but noone can get gold of me 😂
Getting more and more to entertaining myself. Listening to podcasts, but from a distance. You know, after a year into watching all kinds of video's I notice I can hardly read a book because it's hard to concentrate. Back to basics! Gimme a book!
This is me, I'm struggling with focus...reading a book seems insufferable and I remember whipping through books i liked over a weekend in the 2000's.
I have the same. I have 300 books to read and I just forced almost myself to start one.
I am so glad. It is a XX century Italian Novel of a writer Lampedusa, who after writing - died.
The book depicting life of Sicilian arystokracy in XIX century is just amazingly poetic ans charming.
One of the best Italian novels
I gave up TV freedom years ago and dont miss it. Also dtopped following the news and politics. No regrets. Sadly I now spend too much time on YT.
Same here. But YT is educational. So no regrets
One sec is a free app that can help with that! I have been very satisfied with it. It’s an “annoying app”, forcing you to wait a period to open RUclips. It prevents that dopamine rush you get from opening the app.
THIS IS THE COLLAB IVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! ☺️ appreciate the both of you so much!
as I excitingly pick up this phone at 2:43a to finish this podcast. This was confirmation that I needed to hear. I am addicted and a noticed the fog...memory loss...I have been starting to lessen the time on the phone. Now...I want my life back. ❤ Thank you for talking about it!
The first time I read Lost Scrolls of Jewish Wealth, I couldn’t believe how much I had been overlooking. It’s one of those books that stays with you and makes you rethink everything.
true this book is game changer
I deleted TikTok and Reddit from my phone bc of this podcast. Also turned on permanent do not disturb.
Good for you!
This was really great. Thank you for inviting Carlos!
Dude Carlos is awesome. I attended Sandals Church in Cali when he was the worship leader.
Thank you so much for this podcast. I heard Carlos discuss his experiment on Susie Larson's podcast, followed him on social media, then forgot about it. However, this reminder taught me to create DND modes on my phone, eliminate a lot of social media, and go screen-free within an hour of bedtime. Re-dedication to MY LIFE!
The episode I never knew I needed.
Enjoyed this more than most interview style episodes. A lot to think about
I understand about screens. All this rings true in my soul. What about listening to radio, audiobooks, or music?
There is a difference between passive technology (radio, TV), versus interactive like computers, iPads and smartphones. They affect your brain in different ways. I think music, podcasts and radio is better.
This is exactly what I need. Lots of good truths in here. I'm going to buy the book.
This is inspiring! feeling like i need to change this bad habit for awhile now and after listening to this today feeling like nows the time to make some changes thankyou gor sharing ❤
Get less screen time, meanwhile I am watching this inside of going outside 😂
This is the answer. I can tell my conitive abilities are slower. I get it.
My boys (10 and 8) have been struggling in different ways behaviorally and neurologically with sleep. After watching this, I took them off screens cold turkey (tv, computers unless needed for school, and video games). After just few days, they are happier, sleeping better, and more focused. I make it sound like they were constantly on screens -it wasn’t THAT much, but the improvement I saw was scary (though welcomed)
watch Wall-e. I remember watching it with my kids years ago and saying that's what we're headed to. And we are.
This is soooo good I’m listening again.
Loved this. I've been heading in this direction on my own, but this truly helped so much. I'm buying an alarm clock❤
Love this. Thank you.
I mean it only makes sense. Your memories a lot better whenever you don't have a lot on your mind. Every time you look at your phone you're adding multiple snapshots or instances of something new to think about, Even if that is subconsciously.
LOVE Carlos and John! Can’t wait for this interview! ❤
I NEEDED this episode ❤ thank you
This was excellent! Going to make adjustments.
This was so good! Thank you!
Thank you. Of course I ordered the audible version of Carlos' book. Cheers to all of your continied success on behalf of advertisers! We''re people, too! 😂 Thank you!
This is amazing information, Thank you!
Fantastic content Dr. John! Imagine if all Americans did this at least once a year.
Finally, a guest who doesn't make me cringe when I research their background!
So if we can’t go live with Amish for 2 weeks, how do we quit?
It’s hard to kick addictions without support.
I wish all humans could hear and process this podcast.
Great video as always Dr John. Big fan. Genuine question, what is your justification for posting short videos?
Probably because they reach more people, if you want to grow on the internet these days you don't have other options. I work with social media too, doing this kinda of videos, but I don't watch them anymore. They are perfect for distractions, but the rarely add something really meaningful for your life.
12 YEARS! I gasped!
wish I could take 7-8 weeks and go off-the grid, but you know what? My bills will not get pay on their own
I nearly called John asking why I turned into the stereotypical husband that forgets everything my wife tells me. I thought I was doing good after taking social media apps off of my phone!
Guess there's a lot more I need to implement... 😑
Just like work or school how all has rules, I believe that should apply to social media. Use it as a practical use. I no longer have social media where I am advertising my life. I got rid of that 3 years ago. & camping. Please yall camp more. It’s life changing
He literally stopped and smelled the roses! 👃 🌹🌹🌹 lol
amazing podcast
Me watching this on a screen
How can I do this, but still have my phone? Do I need to get a flip phone?
Can we distinguish social media from working on a screen? I read and study do case work, I’m not on social media. Can we clarify the difference? Should people who work on screens not?
That depends. What do you do? There was something interesting about watching it. The waitresses shorthand on a piece of paper. Nurses used to hand write all of their notes about their patients. Change has brought about some good things, but our brains are not exercised. We’re given too many drop-down menusand such and the more problem-solving we do the more we can problem solve.
Meanwhile us watching this through our screens and you having a career thanks to that.
100% ❤ 🎉 😂 😅 😊 ha ha ha
😂 ❤ 🎉 100% 😂 😅 😊 ha ha ha
You gotta send the message to those who need to hear it most!!
My thoughts exactly!
But if through screens is how he can bring the most awareness that's what he must do! It's your choice now to get off screens more or not.
Be more efficient or more human? Deep thought
❤ the irony of the ad breaks consisting of John trying to sell us an app or a device or some way of contracting out our humanit to tech! 😅😂
Why are you promoting an exercise app on a show about not using your phone?!?! In fact nearly all, if not all of your shows sponsors are app based. Sponsors…are you seeing the issue here???
I was a big fan of this show up until this video which made me begin to question the possible hypocrisy of the show.
Also, I was always taught you can't see dementia on scans... well, Alzheimer's type, at least. Is that not true anymore?
This is why we need many cultures! America needs other cultures to reintroduce humanity to Americans! This is cracking me up! I am also listening to this at 1.25, lol! My sister and I take no less than an hour to eat a meal, enjoying food and company!
I can't just abandon screens. I need to earn a living. But I get the gist of it. By the way, I was an OG user of gmail. I was in high school in 2005 when my buddy "invited" me to use gmail. It revolutionized the web. That, and Firefox.
Who was the band??!!?
Ikr I really want to know
phones are " Babylonian rectangles of death " Bear Independent
Never giving up the GPS!!!! 🎉😂 I get lost so easy. Even way before cell phones were a thing. It's amazing.
I will definitely make some adjustments in my life
Then get yourself a map. YOu never know when your GPS might go out.
@brynne77 agree! 🎉💥
Does listening to a podcast with earbuds in while I work count as screentime?
I have 3 screens I work on 40 hrs a week from home....so I can't detox on screens, but I sure can with my phone.
I agree…all this is situations and I think yes all these adults are cheating a lot on their snapchats etc. I agree I honestly can’t get into the technology but I don’t think that’s what’s damaging relationships. I think it’s the lack of morals
This needs to be studied in women. Asap. Specific to women approaching menopause, and during the first year or two of diminishing, and fully absent menstrual cycles. Women's memories are disappearing. It is menopause? To be fixed by new zpharma products? Is it (memory failures) screens, from decades of desk jobs at work? The women losing words, forgettjng simple vocabulary, unable to finish common tasks at home or at work is a serious issue. Why are women being told its menopause? Men are told, oh its really screens? We need resl answers for women.
You lose more time from your life waiting on red lights while commuting to and from work. Not every moment of life has to have profound purpose or meaning.
Thank you LORD for this video I really needed this! And even more I need we need the LORD Jesus Christ!!
Just checked my screen time. 17 hours. And that’s down 18% I watch YT while I do literally everything. I would delete RUclips, but I need it to help with my homework. Maybe I could create another account with no subscriptions, just to study with.
I also worry about y kids and people with blue tooth headphones in constantly. Besides ruining hearing what does emf do to your brain? hearing brain waves. I go to heavy metal concerts. My hearing is fine. Real music do talk on phone, look up weather. I watch podcasts. Like yours
Thank you for your podcast.
Lol, I don't listen to music or anything while I drive majority of the time. It interrupts my thoughts.
Yeah that’s the whole point for me 😅
I don’t think I would be able to have a conversation with this man. I wish he would wisely choose when to interject. So off putting.
40:30 is so true
I’m also going back to the flip phones 😂
I find it really hard fitting in with Facebook instagram etc
Then how am i supposed to watch this lol😂
Low IQ take
Asking respectfully - do we mean "cerebrum" and not "cerebellum"? Cerebellum has to do with balance and whatnot. Cerebrum is the cognitive functioning. Perhaps I am missing something?
So if I work on a computer up to 5 hours a day and then come home and scroll the internet am I dying next year. Wtf
Is listening to podcasts as bad as looking at screens? I listen to various podcasts a lot.
I'd like to know how much of the brain healing was due to the diet change of living the life of an Amish and Monk.
❤ ❤ ❤ the idea if a wo Der journal!!! I'm taking mine visually. We moved a couple years ago to an old defunct Birtch farm in rural northern MI near a summer tourist spot on the lake. We habe 40 acres of deep trails and a 1 & 1/2 foot deep frog pond.
I suddenly ly rediscovered my love for nature & wildlife photography and am now considering opening a gallery in one of the openings in town. It's the perfect location for tourists on tjeor way to dinner downtown from the wealthiest meighborhoods here. I want to share with them the year round beauty I habe discovered locally in all seasons so they can feel a deeper connection amd take a piece of this place home they wouldn't habe expected.
My fBe part is scouting pics at Sunrise. It gets light later here than where we lived in the desert of CA. I can take Sunrise lake pics all fall on my way home from dropping the kids at school. The beauty here is quick and convenient. Just a walk out the back yard. I don't even need to board a plane or plan am excursion. It's amazing and hopefully will get the kids out there learning that people are also nature! We aren't just I it - we are made of it,too.
Welp, no big deal if you check the weather though
This guy can be trusted he loves Mariah Carey - learned this from his book.
This is going to make me stop watching your show....😮 Not because I'm offended but because I don't want to waste time on screens.
As I’m watching this on a screen 😂
This could be like a drug dealer saying "don't do this stuff. It's dangerous. It's not good for you. Not good for people."
Uh huh. Sure.
Plenty good for you and your bosses who are not exiting the biz anytime soon, right?
No shame in the game.
Nobody hates the players. We all hate the game. But life's a chessboard we got almost no choice but to play these days.
There are so many people who's jobs depend on screens. Who feed their families with access to funding scredns open up. On so many different levels.
Easy to get a level of success you could turn them all off, right? Just turn them off to regain power or control over our lives. But they don't even go off now, Bro.
And something we cam't do without call us back to them again soon enough.
Not because we are stupid or don't recognize the dangerous levels of addictive dependence... but because we want to live. To feed our families.
On a global level as society.
Same reason people go to the bottle or the crack pipe. The glass.
The illusion that it helps us live.
The knowledge that it's breakable, delicate, requires protection.
Because we don't want to face an uncomfortable truth, maybe: that we do need something to live.
Maybe we need God.
Maybe we could depend on Him?
But that is so huge, it's scary. That is like for real life or death, Yo, eternity.
Acknowledging there might be a world beyond the one we see, hear, taste, smell, and see. That terrifies us.
But that could become our greatest strength if we decide to face it together. And to help each other out.
But we're not.
We're deciding the opposite.
To face it isolating and Godless, spaced out on screens.
No wonder people are frealing out on this stuff.
I came for my son's cerebellum. I gotta help him get that thing online and calm down the activity in his parietal and temporal lobes. It's making him crazy and he doesn't even get much screens yet.
Any advice you could give on those fronts will probably conflict with the number of docs he's seen to solve it so far.
But could be worth a try, after all.
Because we never stop trying to help. Love never stops. Never ends.
Right?
❤
It is infinite.
🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉 🎉
Thank God!
❤
You ok? I think the overarching theme isn’t to turn off your screen showing an excel spreadsheet, or emails, or whatever you need for your job.
It’s more the scrolling on social media, the excessive consumption of entertainment via screens like RUclips, Netflix, etc. The constant checking of email even when you’re ’off the clock.’
Oh wow. Carlos Whittaker used to be the worship leader at my church in southern California
Sandals? I was attending also.
@ yes
Way too many commercials
Obligatory joke about watching screen while telling me it's bad for me
My screen time is 12 hours 40 minutes a day LOL
Mines 5hrs 45 mins. Brought it down from 8 hrs. I highly recommend reducing it, helped my anxiety and brain fog a lot.
Boo... No experts.
Even the experts can fall short. Sometimes it takes real, down-to-earth humans to turn the lights on for lost people
Is every conservative in Tennessee now?
Am I misunderstanding this or does this guy buy a new ceramic mug every time he gets a coffee? What does he do with them all? Sounds very expensive and wasteful.
