How are you finding playing it solo? Are you doing the scenarios? I haven't had much trouble reaching the point threshold goals for the scenarios so far...actually I have been far exceeding them.
@MistaRauGaming I have not played through any of the scenarios yet. I do like that there are different ways to play it. As for solo, I love it. But I am primarliy a solo player anyway. I did play one game of Draft and Write last night. Have you played that. I can't remember if you did. Video on that game. That is a fun game.
I had a chance to play this in the demo area at DTW this year. We immediately ran into something of an issue with the first player token during multiplayer. Basically, instead of taking a tile during your turn you can take first player and pass your turn. However, you still get to pick a tile at the end before the next round, then you are also first player the following round. The issue with this is if you are already the last player, then you instantly become the first player because there is no reason not to grab the token. We even confirmed this and the rulebook flatly says the last player becomes first player if the token was not taken. It just felt like a silly mechanic. The scoring was also kind of clunky with all of the layering and having to go through your tiles multiple times to count big animals, small ones and then the big reef zones along with the ecosystem tiles (which they didn't use for the demo). I like the look of the game but was not terribly impressed by our playthrough. It's too bad because I came in pretty hopeful about the game. Also, as explained to us during the demo, the reef scoring considers the covered parts as well as non-covered. So your score would actually have been quite a bit higher.
I agree with the 1st player marker…seemed like a weird choice on how it works overall. I see what they were going for, but I think execution could have been polished. I don’t find the scoring all that bad, and actually think it’s cleaner than in something like Cascadia (which I have been comparing this game a lot to). The iconography on the ecosystem titles does not explain what is actually being scored, and you have to look it up. Overall I’m very happy with the game, but will have to see if there is room for both it and Cascadia in a collection.
I have been playing this solo a couple of times. I enjoy it very much. Nice artwork. Thick sturdy tiles.
