Merle has been my hero since I was a kid. Learned to play guitar on his songs. I cover this one on vocals when I sit in with my country pickin' buddies. Older the better for me.
Merle hagard, George Jones, Gary Stewart, were a different Era, the Golden age of country music. So different than today's country music, like you pointed out, Merle Hagards music was always playing on the juke box at local honky tonk bars, was my dad's favorite, is why l love listening to the classics so much... steel guitars crying , and fiddles playing, will forever have a place in my heart...
Modern "Country Music" has its roots in Pop/Hip Hop music. It's nothing like classic country which originated in the late 1920's and ended in the early 90's. It was more influenced by traditional folk and bluegrass, and then later by blues and rock. Merle Haggard was in San Quentin prison when Johnny Cash played a show there in 1959. Apparently it was such a huge influence on him he decided to pursue a music career when he was released in 1960. He was part of the Bakersfield country music seen that came out of California, and is definitely a country legend.
Great video! As a Bakersfield native, I get down with some country music every so often. I don’t care if it’s new, old as long as it’s boppin and I can drink to it.
As time goes on the definition of old school changes. :) when I was young, old school was Bob wills, hank Williams Sr. then as I got older Merle, Willie, Johnny cash became old school. Now that I am even older I have heard a few young kids call Garth, Alan Jackson, Toby Keith old school. I guess old school depends on what part of the timeline you were born in :)
Love the old school. You mentioned not wanting to be a dinosaur, listen to Hank Williams Jr. Dinosaur, you’ll love it. I like almost all country music. Some newer artists that sing more old school, that I think you’d like, Cody Jinks, Strugill Simpson, and Tyler Childers, just surf around and check out some of their songs. God bless you man!
Old school, any of it up through the 90’s, except George Strait he kept close to the old school country throughout his career. Do Misery and Gin, by The Hag(Merle’s nickname) I agree that you can’t go wrong with any of his songs. Gary Stewart has a lot of good ones, too. My daddy took me to see him for my 18th bday. I was tore up! But, so was Gary Stewart! I had a blast!
Preferably I’d rather old country and 90’s country but I still like a few of the artist these days like Blake Shelton , Justin Moore, Brantley Gilbert , some of those guys still have old school attributes
If you haven’t listened to any Chris knight music you should listen to it. Some suggestions are “enough rope” and “go on home” or “send a boat” He’s one of the greatest songwriters of our generation.
I like mostly the older school of country music but still find a good bit of pleasure in listening to some of the more recent stuff. Don't like the introduction of too much profanity in songs though. I don't drink but enjoy listening to drinking songs.
I like the old AND the new whether it's the early string bands, Roy Acuff, Bill Monroe, Hank Williams or The Hag, Bocephus, Watasha or that Red headed stranger old pot puffing Willie himself. Also all of the many sub-genres like psychobilly, cowpunk, Americana, bluegrass, red dirt music, cowboy ballads and Country Rap or as I call it Rapabilly music. It's all good. Merle Haggard with his Bakersfield sound is the epitome of Honky Tonk music.
Funny I just posted a comment on that on that Billy Currington and asked you to do some react to some more Country Music. I also recommended some more Currington songs that I'm sure that you'll like.
Grateful this came up in my suggestion! Love watching the Discovery of Country Legends! And, excited that You love Country! Checking out your videos! Gary Stewart! You’ve got a New Sub!
Old school, bro! Old school! Real honest to goodness honky tonk music like this one. And ANY of the so called "Outlaw" country music from the likes of Waylon, Kris, Willie, Billy Joe, Hank jr. etc. from the '70s era.
Old school is Hank Williams Sr, Lefty Frizell, Ernest Tubb, Webb Pierce, Marty Robbins, Buck Owens , Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams Jr. Shelton and McGraw aren't even in that school at all.
I like old school country Johnny Cash Waylon Jennings Willie Nelson but I also like the mid-90s country the new age stuff I'm not too fond of unless it's Upchurch
Definitely old school. Most of new country artists songs all sounds the same. Even when i was in grade school i could tell who the artist was by the intro.
Try the Louvin brothers lefty frezzel Hank sr Red Sovein Patty Loveless Crystal Gayle Mickey Gilley La costa Tucker Stella Parton Statler Brothers Oak Ridge Boys I could go on
New country music is wonderful, but to me, it’s a completely different type of music. A different feel. I’m much more a fan of Haggard, Jones, Jennings, etc
The True King Of Country
This is my favorite song and Merle Haggard is my favorite singer and I'm only 15 and I love them best singer I know
Older the better for the most part. The Merle Haggard song Ramblin Fever might be the best country ever written. It’s perfect.
Old school,.... it was raw and original, hand crafted
Saw Merle in concert oh my gosh love when the artist sounds just as good live as the recording
Merle has been my hero since I was a kid. Learned to play guitar on his songs. I cover this one on vocals when I sit in with my country pickin' buddies. Older the better for me.

Old school country music. For sure
Your right on the money 💰 sir !
Music connects us all. There are only 7 notes, but there is so much more to all the new friends you make with music.
Old-school traditional country, most of the new country shit is just bad rock ‘n’ roll.
old country, outlaw period of the 70's and early 80's.
There is no comparison. One genre is country and the other genre is pop.
As time goes on the definition of old school changes. :) when I was young, old school was Bob wills, hank Williams Sr. then as I got older Merle, Willie, Johnny cash became old school. Old School... 10000%
I like old school rock, rap, country. Probably bc I'm old, lol. New music is a hybrid of everything, but sounds pop. Some of it is good though.
Preferably I’d rather old country and 90’s country but I still like a few of the artist these days like Blake Shelton , Justin Moore, Brantley Gilbert , some of those guys still have old school attributes
Try Hags 'Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down'
If you haven’t listened to any Chris knight music you should listen to it. Some suggestions are “enough rope” and “go on home” or “send a boat”

I don't drink but enjoy listening to drinking songs.
Not wrong - the entire spectrum is is great. I have a soft spot for the 90’s . John Deere green , queen of my double wide trailer type stuff.
I like the old AND the new whether it's the early string bands, Roy Acuff, Bill Monroe, Hank Williams or The Hag, Bocephus, Watasha or that Red headed stranger old pot puffing Willie himself. Old school nothing comes close to real life country. It ended around the 90s and now it's just plain wrong .
I like it all IF it sounds good. Do not like the new Female artist Pop Country.
New country music is wonderful, but to me, it’s a completely different type of music. A different feel. I’m much more a fan of Haggard, Jones, Jennings, etc
