    About:
    Jason and Lorraine. In 2016 we sold most of our belongings and left the city in southern California to start a small homestead in the mountains of North Carolina. We left the city in search for a more minimal and intentional life. We became passionate about growing our own food and knowing what exactly is in our food after I (Jason) became diagnosed with cancer. Now 8 years in remission we as a family are on a journey to live our passions.
    We document our life on RUclips videos to inspire others to get out of their comfort zone and not be afraid of change. We started our own online general store where we have available the things we make and use in real life. Thank you for following us on this incredible life changing journey!

    Jason, check the local grocery store produce managers to see if they will let you leave buckets for the trimmings to give the brothers. You may have to leave several, or pick up daily, but hey! free food. Homestead is looking good. Let us know how the purple/red spinach tastes.

    Jason you’re right about the ducks. Ducks will wait until dark to go up at night. After it rains the bugs are even more active and ducks love to get the bugs. Kevin and Sarah at Living Traditions just did a video on this very thing. They have to wait until it’s dark to lock their ducks up because they don’t go in as early as the chickens. Maybe if you set your timer for a wee bit later they’d get in as before for ya? Idk. Just thought it was funny you both are having the same issues with your ducks. Stay blessed sweet family. ~❤️ Lisa

    About the chick with the leg issue, had the issue with some of my first Cornish Cross chicks when they were around a week old. I laid hardware cloth on top of the shavings and added a thin layer on the top as well. It forced them to grip the h/w cloth instead of a flatter surface that seemed to splay their feet. The therapy worked. :-)

    • @juanitadafler7233
      @juanitadafler7233 4 года назад

      #Sow The Land Also, Jason, please don't take this as me being critical but there are times I've watched you get them back in the pen with your foot instead of picking them up gently to put them back in and there are times when you begin to shut the door on them. I know you are trying to hold the camera, film and talk at the same time but instead of having an injured chick and losing what could feed your family several meals, put the camera down. Cornish rock chicks are notorious for leg problems why potentially injure one with your foot?

    Hey Jason! Have you ever thought of raising rabbits? They are so easy to care for, and their manure is EXCELLENT for your garden... it is cold (you can use it right away, no need to wait). You can benefit with their meat and fur as well. I watched "Living Traditions Homestead" and Sarah has some videos on how to raise them in cages and tractors. It seems they need to spend some time during the day on the ground eating grass. Papa Pepper, and Good Simple Living also use their manure in their gardens if you want to check them out.

    Hi Jason and Lorraine, Are you growing comfrey yet, the non seeding kind? You could ring your meadow on the edge of the thicket by the stream every couple feet another plant. Or on the steep slope, it makes excellent food for the chickens and pigs, even for you in a pinch cause its high protein. The root is not supposedly safe to eat ( yet people used to routinely eat the leaves) It's an excellent poultice for any broken bone or sprain, especially the root. Known as the bone setter. However it is growing excellent fertilizer, either lay leaves around the plants or crumble it or add it to your compost pile, or soak a bucketful in water with a tight lid to make wonderful liquid fertilizer cut with water. An investment that will pay off many times over as it is a permanent planting. dig it up, even pencil thin one inch pieces will grow into permanent plants and the original plant you dig up will inevitably grow again as well. Watch youtube videos about it. I got a bunch of the Russian Bocking #14 which doesn't grow from seeds, only root cuttings. And I would be happy to mail you some as a gift if you want them. I went a little crazy and have about 25 plants growing 2nd year, now. I'm on a city plot and have about 20x60 ft space in a community garden. .So it would be easy for me to just mail some cuttings from them. In your climate you can harvest them like a haircut 6" to 8" high, I would guess about 4-6 times a year. Filled out they can be almost a yard wide, and send up multiple shoots where one shoot is cut off. They have very, very deep roots so excellent trace mineral enrichment. I so enjoy watching your Sow the Land on RUclips, and your carpentry interests me too.I first saw you on Justin Rhodes youtube. Without the spaces, I'm reachable at elwise 44 @aol.com -Elaine Found it fascinating that most covered wagons going West in the 1800's all had a comfrey plant on board for their new homesteads.

    I have trouble getting enough compost out of my little yard, even with a large maple tree and collecting all the mowed grass. So I decided this year that I every time I go up to the land on the weekends I am going to pile up more leaves. After each fire I will pile up the ashes and charcoal in the leaves. And every time I must pee, I will pee on this pile. I suspect that if I spend 15 minutes every weekend piling leaves and doing this, I will probably have loads of compost next year.

Anyway just my two sense!!

    I think around 2:45 as you were closing the door one of the little chicks had a leg that kind of got closed in the door. That may be what is wrong with the one later on in the video around 8:30. I think in both sections of the video it is the left leg.. Could be a completely different chick, but that caught my attention and I thought I would share that with you. I hope this helps and figuring out what's wrong with the baby. Have a blessed day.
