As a 8 year old Pakistani kid in 1996 who was very excited that Pakistan were the defending champions but I had very limited cricketing knowledge of cricket. It was Arjuna, Sanath and DiSilva who taught me what it actually means to be a cricketer...what it means to have a "brand of cricket" that Sri Lanka first pioneered. Miandad and Imran were just big names for me that I didn't have the pleasure to watch at their peaks, so I could never relate to them, but Sanath, Arjuna and Aravinda were the first heroes that grew over me as the first cricket icons. Today I feel so proud that it is Ranatunga's country that once again defied the odds and humbled South Africa in their own backyard. Love to Sri Lanka from Karachi.
I am a big fan of arjun ranatunga from India. 🙏🙏 . He proved that not having perfect physique and athletic body can't stop you becoming a legend in cricket. He was so focused and adamant in not getting out. He was a true gentleman on the field too. Respect from brotherly nation 🙏👍🙏.
I supported Shri Lanka in final. We lost semifinal to them. But Aravinda was my favourite. His helmet, swag, kookaburra bat and his shots were a treat to eye. Arjuna's one day batting was great, glances and late cuts. He is an underrated finisher.
I was there in the stadium that evening. The crowd went crazy for Srilanka. It totally behind Srilanka as they had won Pakistani hearts and respect by there gutsy show and standing up to the bully Australian in controversial Australian series before the world cup. We felt we were supporting the Pakistani team in the ground that day .The passion was unbelievable and we were rewarded with the sublime innings of Arvinda.

We make Sri Lankan team felt like playing on home ground. As a kid living in Lahore, I still remember watching final on TV, with my family and was just 3km away from Gaddafi Stadium. During the match I use to go to the roof of my house, just to see Stadium's light, if concentrate i could even hear crowd cheers. Aaah childhood days.

Well! Memories memories & memories. Dileep Mendes, Ravi Ratnayeke, Rumesh Ratnayeke, Kuruppu, Domail, Ranatunga... I remember that team that had 50 to 60% left handed batsmen. Interestingly Ravi Ratnayeke was the opener as well as the opening bowler. Kuruppu was the first batsman from Sri Lanka who scored the double century (I think it was against NZ), I remember this news in "Khabarnama (the news)" @ 2100 hours....

Great man Ranatunga. I've been following cricket since 1986 (after famous Miandad six in sharjah). Over the years I saw him, Duleep Mendis and Arvinda (in fact the Srilankan side) on the receiving end. Few months before the WC96 Srilankan team visited Pakistan and everybody criticized PCB for inviting a weaker side i.e. Srilanka, most of the star players didn't even feature in that series (Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Javed Miandad etc) and Srilanka defeated Pakistan 2-1 both in Tests and ODIs. Then they started their WC campaign in style and ultimately became triumphant.

It was really exciting to see #Srilanka won in 1996 my home city of lahore in Pakistan. Nail biting match it was. Wonderful school days. Playgrounds were also filled with fans in every nook and corner.
I had heard one time that when Mark Waugh was out,Australia literally lose the match.Aus team was very much dependent on Mark Waugh on Asian conditions those days to get a good total and that pitch they have to score over 300 or atleast close to that for win.So main reason was the failure of Aussies batting that day which made things very easy for Sri Lanka.Then may be after the dew things become very easy for Lanka.

Dew is a big factor, bowlers can't grip the ball especially spinners now I know why Warne struggled so much in the final. Good decision by ranatunga to field 1st otherwise Sri Lanka would have lost.
India winning in 83, pakistan winning in 92 and srikanka winning in 96 it changed the course of cricket in subcontinent and all the subcontinent team became competitive as compared to other teams. Almost in all the semifinals there were atleast 2 sub continent teams for remaining of all worldcups. In 2011 all 3 teams were in semis of worldcup.

It was a brave decision to bat first as history was against it..all previous finals had been won by teams batting first..credit to Ranatunga for making the right call and to that man Aravinda Desilva..
I remember watching Aravinda playing a a true heroic faultless batting which guided Srilanka to a great World Cup victory.

Great man Ranatunga. I've been following cricket since 1986 (after famous Miandad six in sharjah). Over the years I saw him, Duleep Mendis and Arvinda (in fact the Srilankan side) on the receiving end. Few months before the WC96 Srilankan team visited Pakistan and everybody criticized PCB for inviting a weaker side i.e. Srilanka, most of the star players didn't even feature in that series (Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Javed Miandad etc) and Srilanka defeated Pakistan 2-1 both in Tests and ODIs. Then they started their WC campaign in style and ultimately became triumphant.

He taught the asian teams to fight against partiality , I remember how he backed up Muralitharan when partial umpire Emmerson objected muralis action only out of prejudice but Ranatunga showed the courage and walked off the ground with team and he was immediately cleared to bowl , infact Ranatunga purposely brought Muralitharan to bowl from same end from.which Emmerson was umpiring this was a great act if Ranatunga wouldn't had done that Muralitharan wouldn't be a same bowler but he showed his trust and confidence on Murali which proved beneficial for him throughout his career , I like the way he used his spinners against australia in finals much before the world knew about Australias struggle while playing spin respect from india to the great visionary Arjuna Ranatunga

It was really exciting to see #Srilanka won in 1996 my home city of lahore in Pakistan. Nail biting match it was. Wonderful school days. Playgrounds were also filled with fans in every nook and corner.
I had heard one time that when Mark Waugh was out,Australia literally lose the match.Aus team was very much dependent on Mark Waugh on Asian conditions those days to get a good total and that pitch they have to score over 300 or atleast close to that for win.So main reason was the failure of Aussies batting that day which made things very easy for Sri Lanka.Then may be after the dew things become very easy for Lanka.

Dew is a big factor, bowlers can't grip the ball especially spinners now I know why Warne struggled so much in the final. Good decision by ranatunga to field 1st otherwise Sri Lanka would have lost.
India winning in 83, pakistan winning in 92 and srikanka winning in 96 it changed the course of cricket in subcontinent and all the subcontinent team became competitive as compared to other teams. Almost in all the semifinals there were atleast 2 sub continent teams for remaining of all worldcups. In 2011 all 3 teams were in semis of worldcup.
