If I can make a suggestion regarding the position of your art table. I would turn it with the short side perpendicular to the window wall with plenty of space between the table and the handrail so you can add a stool on the other side of the table. This way you have even more light as you’re working. You also have your face towards the entry/staircase which makes it more Feng Shui friendly. The wall behind you can be furnished with all your supplies and bookcases as well as your mood/vision board and images. The computer desk is perfect where it is and that armchair for your son to come and spend time with you is also perfect.
Thank you 🙏 I didn't think of that. I'll see how I go, but I might try that. I would prefer not to have my back to where people come in, but I do see them through the handrail coming up the stairs, so that's good. I feel like I am almost there with the set-up, the chair and computer desk is working really well. That chair has never had so many people sit on it!! My daughter, son and husband all come up to visit me now.
I can't have my work space facing windows because the light shining directly in my eyes is too uncomfortable . Good suggestion. I also have to be attentive to the light casting a shadow with my drawing hand.
I’ve seen this video at the perfect time! I’ve got a day off from my day job on Friday this week and I’ve planned to spend the whole day in my home studio. Sorting out, tidying, cleaning brushes and paint trays, organising supplies. Think I’ll have an early morning trip to the charity shops to see if there are any lovely vessels to organise everything with - thank you for sharing. Always lovely to nosey at someone else’s studio too 😊
Too funny. I made one small change today and it was putting my electric pencil sharpener in a more accessible spot. I've had to step over clutter and reach to the back of one of my drafting tables. This made me completely unmotivated to empty it out. I know, I could ave cleaned the clutter, but that was too much for this lazy Saturday 😆 Thanks for your inspiration, Laura
One small change is something! It's so funny our routines and spaces we can get comfortable in and forget to make things easier on ourselves! Thanks for watching 🩷
Thank you!! I think I might be a bit of an anomaly in the artist world - an artist minimalist! Is there such a thing! I do have more stuff at my other studio, but still it's pretty pared back compared to many. I'm quite picky about what I buy and don't like feeling too cluttered.
What a lovely space! I always love seeing studio tours because of my background in interior design. In my free time at my day job I like to plan my dream art studio. :)
After 10-12 classes i can say that i have been taking care for the best position for the most used items so as to save energy and at the same, space! This short orientation helps me to enhance the easiest way to continue organizing with my needs, and for instance, each person have different ones! Thanks for this. Just on time to avoid procrastination!
Oh Laura. My heart was so blessed by this video. I relate to how you have moved it all around. I’m always trying to sort and de clutter my own studio. It’s a real feat! My space is less than three by three metres and has a walkway through it. So the furniture is set and can’t be moved. So frustrating at times. The two desks are setup, one for sewing, the other for painting and supplies and tools and fabrics are squished in all sort of creative containers and nooky little places. …..’Trying to keep this place clean and minimal’ I can relate, so much. I loved your black sketch page of pencil swatches. I get caught up in the prettiness of the pencil shavings and think how exquisitely like flower petals they are. Thank you for sharing this video it was so precious. Really loved it!
@@LauraHornArt Yes. It can be. But now look at your space. What a special place to create in. So cool! Mine is not too bad and and I struggle to make it work, buts It’s Okay. Today, I gave myself an attitude chat after watching a couple more of your video content and so today, before I started doing alterations to a friends wedding dress, I took your cue and created some really sweet little pieces in my sketchbook. They were inspired by your working in a Sketchbook video. So happy with the outcome. Already prepared my sketchbook for tomorrows experiments! I have struggled with abstraction as a style but am finally learning to appreciate it. Thank you Laura for the inspiration. 😊
Great suggestion. Love the clean look of your art studio. They are so well organized and inspiring. I am also in the process of organizing my art room. Looking for ways and I found yours. Wish I have a bigger room like yours. Thank you for sharing. Truly love it.
For your watercolor/gouache tubes. What I have done recently is display them on a corkboard. It is beautiful to look at and also I can see exactly what I have. Just add some map pins and add binder clips to the tubes. I can't add a picture here but google could provide a visual. Love your videos :)
Hi Annmarie, That's a really great idea. I have seen that on the interwebs and have been thinking about something similar. I have too many tubes now, I am forever rustling trying to find the right colour.
Beautiful studio! I see Geninne's art was on your moodboard, nice! I highly recommend you to use a standing mat, it makes standing much more easier and it's better for your back. I struggle with my posture so I try to work and paint as much as possible standing and the mat is what helps me stand longer. That and stretching and resting a few minutes several times a day.
Good spotting, I love Geninne's birds and I was gifted a lovely calendar of her work. I have been thinking about getting a mat. It sounds like they make a big difference. I find that I don't stand for all that long before wanting to sit down. I also like the idea of doing some stretches. I really want to improve my back health.
Such a lovely new setup for your space! I have an "out of sight out of mind" problem and would love to be able to see my supplies on a regular basis. However, I have a small house and my art space is shared with my work space for my day job. So I am always looking for art storage inspiration. Thank you for the video!
Thanks Rachel, I know what you mean about out of sight, out of mind. Sometimes I find it helps to at least leave a sketchbook out somewhere where it catches your eye and invites you to play. It's so easy to forget about things when they are tucked away.
Ah, yes, the cat chair. I once kept an armchair in my art/sewing room because a cat liked it. There was also a large rolled back chaise in the middle of the house that was only ever used by the cats. A big dramatic glorified cat bed. 🤣
Such a beautiful warm and enviting space and tidy to. Really have some envy now even though I am so happy with the space I claimed for myself. Its the boiler room wich has a big window. It's small but having my own place where I can have my art supplies out without cluttering the living room feels luxurious.
Thank you! I get many visitors during the day 👧👦🏻🐈 so I must be doing something right up there! I think it might be moving the chair. I’m enjoying the new vibe ❤️
Hello! Really enjoyed this video. Your studio is lovely! I think I have my studio sorted out pretty well but I'm always yearning for more space😵💫but I'm really in a good spot. I can be lost in my studio for hours. I love it! 🥰❤️
Love the Ikea trays for supplies. I was in the same boat. For years I forgot I had several tin cans full of pastels. I put them in a tray and it’s like I bought new supplies. I love how your tray is sectioned though. Might need to check those out. Your studio is beautiful 😊
Lovely vid - can't wait to have my own studio space one day. At least I can see yours and dream! I am looking forward to (finally) getting started on some of your courses this year that I purchased an embarrassingly long time ago haha!
Your video caught my attention in that I am in the process of rearranging my very size limited art studio. I mainly do pencil sketches that lead to pen and ink drawings and sometimes that leads to watercolor washes. Actually, it is an art studio, office for my wife and an office for me, book cases, and several file cabinets. Oh, if only I had a loft like yours. Won’t happen so I need ideas on how to rearrange things so that I can do more art. You have given me some ideas so now all I need to do is start moving furniture. I do like what you have set up. I cannot say I would change anything. May this year be a good one for you. I have seen some of your video covers but have yet to watch one. I will change that ASAP. Thanks again. -OkieSketcher1949
Thank you . I am in the States. Most of the supplies come in sets ( except Posca pens) . I am expanding my studio so I am very interested in all the details. I too have 2 studios . The main one is in Vermont, our country home and the other one is in Boston. So I am always interested in organizing!
That's so interesting. Most of our art supply stories sell items individually and you just fill up your basket and bring it all home to organise in whatever you can find!! I only just bought my first bigger set of Neo Color II recently online. They are still in the tin! Good luck with the studio expansion. Sounds exciting!
Thanks Sue, it is always good to be reminded how lucky you have it. I sometimes get frustrated with things, and I have to give myself a talking too and remind myself how lucky I am to even have a space at all!
I do sculpture and photography paintings with Resin, mixed media, and things I find in nature. I would like to take one of your class bundles. Which do you think would be of the most benefit for what I do.?
It really depends on what you are looking for - I’m leaning towards the mixed media bundle as there’s a wide variety of techniques and plenty of nature references that you might enjoy. All classes have trailers so perhaps watch a few to see what speaks to you.
Hi Elisa, I have one for my phone that I picked up at a cash collector's store. It's very sturdy compared to others that I have used. Unfortunately, there is no brand or anything on it.
Love your videos Laura and your studio is looking fabulous. Your cat looks so snug in that chair. I was wondering if you could tell me which white paint you used to paint your studio? It's so overwhelming trying to find the right white to paint your walls. 😂
Hi Ros! Don't get me started on choosing a white paint. My walls are painted Dulux Snowy Mountains Half, it can look a tinge green/blue in certain light. Not in my studio, but in other parts of the house that get less light. I was really worried about the walls being too yellow or pink, especially with all the wood features that we have. I was tossing up between Dulux Whisper White and Snowy Mountains Half. The Whisper White looked like it was going to throw up a bit too much green. It's so hard, isn't it!! Overall I am happy, but I'm not sure if I have found the perfect white. My last studio was painted vivid white, which I actually really liked. It's a bright white that doesn't have any undertone. Good luck with it!!
@@LauraHornArt thanks for the info, think I shall grab a couple of those samples. I have spent so much on trying to find the right white. 🤪 think I'll have to use them for a massive abstract. 🙌
Very helpful. This may be petty…but I just wonder what you so with the container these tools come in when you put them in the IKEA . Just toss the? I have a stack of tools in their boxes Thank U!
Thanks Gail! What kind of containers do you mean? Most of these supplies were purchased individually from my art shop so they didn’t come in containers? I buy a lot of stuff loose rather than in sets, so I usually have to find containers for them. I recycle the cardboard packing boxes 📦 when things are ordered online. If it does come in a set then I’ll keep it in that container if it’s working well for me. Hope that answers the question!
