An excellent and thought provoking movie. It has some extreme "food porn" scenes but they didn't make me feel uncomfortable (YMMV of course). It's well worth watching, thanks for mentioning it.
@@NagataYuki5 Honestly I think it's worth watching ,the gluttony scenes are some of the most memorable but the movie stands out because it's actually about issues like friendship, illness, death and the meaning of life much more than it is a film about eating yourself to death (although that's the gist of it).
@@WhitBeMe I looked for the trailer for Mother's Day to check it out and was very confused a to why a Jennifer Aniston movie freaked you out. 😂 Then I found the right one. That did look disturbing.
Martyrs holds my gold standard for horror films that are actually horrifying. The fact that it is so VERY well-done cements that status in ways I doubt any other movie can ever unseat.
That movie is amazing because all the while you are watching it you are left with the question " Why?" why are they doing that? And when you finally find out you are shocked and left with a big WTF. WTF did i just watch
@HEY 4Q2 Mere gore doesn't make a film like this great. I've seen the Guinea Pig films. They're nothing but badly done faux snuff. Haven't seen the others yet, but Martyrs holds my gold standard because it's a very well-made film with depth and content beyond "Let's see how gross we can get away with being."
Martyrs was one of the best movies I never want to see again. The hardest part for me to watch was the girl getting beaten over and over by the man I almost couldn’t sit through it... great movie tho 👌🏻👌🏻
Well said, although I've watched it plenty of times. I first watched it while my wife was doing the ironing. I asked her if she was alright if I put a horror film on (she isn't a fan of subtitles and she definitely does not like horror!) She said she was fine, as she was watching something on her phone. After the massacre of the family at the start, I could see that she was interested and had stopped watching her phone. A little later and she'd given up altogether on the ironing. By the end she was shocked and pretty disturbed by the whole experience. She most definitely wouldn't EVER want to watch Martyrs again haha! I loved it, it's a great movie (a great example of the wave of French Extreme Cinema that came out at that time) but I watched Texas Chainsaw, Zombie Flesheaters and The Exorcist as a young kid (along with a bunch of other Video Nasties that were banned when I was only 10!) so I am pretty immune to violence/horror.
@@awolf2393 I've only seen the remake. I thought it was a pretty well made film, the rape scene is horrendous (and I've heard the originals is even worse!) to watch.
@@davekennedy6315 Strangely, I also kind of enjoyed the film. Not because of the rape scene but the theme of revenge. Also yes, the rape scene in the original film was much, much worse.
Same. It's not at outright gory as the ones on the list, but the fact that it actually happened made it all the more tramatic to watch. It still gives me nightmares.
My boyfriend is a huge horror movie/torture porn enthusiast. He told me once that The Girl Next Door and Last House On The Left horrified him to the point that even talking about them makes him nauseous. He watched them when they first came out and to this day they have him fucked up.
I was going to be so disappointed if Audition wasn't on here. I literally finished watching it and went "Well. That's going to stay with me for the rest of my life."
A Serbian Film is not a horror movie so I really doesn’t belong. I know a lot of list makers refuse to mention Cannibal Holocaust because they don’t want to support actual death performed on film (anima deaths) so that might be why that’s missing. And maybe The Girl Next Door isn’t a well known? Idk that one freaked me out A LOT.
I can watch all these movies except for A Serbian Film. Love I Spit On Your Grave series, both old and new...but men might feel a lil bit uneasy in their balls. Hihi.
“Salo Or the 120 Day of Solom” and “A Siberian Film”....two of the most shocking films I’ve ever seen and EXTREMELY hard to think about watching again.
I wholeheartedly agree with the inclusion of "Martyrs" on this list, in particular Ash's classification of it as a "beautiful film." I'd personally rank it much higher than #9, but that's just me. However I am puzzled by the abundance of clips from the 2015 remake (which is anything but beautiful) when it's clearly the 2008 French language version we're talking about here.
Yeah I saw isoyg2 once.i walked in when they were torturing her.i turned and left.nope.eventually I finished it.fucked me up for months them guys got what they deserved tho
"Galaxy of Terror," has a beautiful love seen between a large maggot and a beautiful woman. Was this a disgusting scene, or a very touching worm meets girl and fall in love scene?
I kind of expected the movie Slither to be on there because that's a movie that whenever someone says, disgusting and sticks with you, that pops up in my head right away.
yes that movie fucked me up. As a women it made me so confused and just ill because it's hard to feel bad for anyone at the end but at the same time you feel bad for all of them. When it comes to revenge no movie can beat it because it goes past revenge into a full torture and kill spree of someone who truly lost her mind, yet you can't blame her.

@Eammon Wright Human Centipede isn't actually that disgusting. It's more psychologically disturbing. The sequels are more disgusting, but they are so poorly made that they feel campy. I picked movies that are disgusting, well enough made to be immersive, and make you think twice about meeting strangers.
@@sigh824 Campy gore isn't disgusting. It takes more than gore to be disgusting. Horrifying human behavior grounded in realistic scenarios and made with enough artistic skill to be immersive is what makes a disgusting film really stick with you.
@@shanytopper2422 But by that standard, A Clockwork Orange, Schindler's List and Pink Floyd- The Wall should be on this list then. That's another list entirely.
martyrs really scarred me and i think a big part of it was how it wasnt just a maniac on a torture spree like we're used to but an organization with a purpose that almost in some weird way made sense. I actually cried a little bit because the overall tone was almost more sad than scary, thats never happened to me with a horror movie before.
Totally agree. Saw Martyrs years ago and it still holds a place in my heart. Disturbed me but in a way I don't mind. Brutally bleak premise, beautifully executed 💘✌️
"120 Days of Sodom" ,not exactly horror but so thoroughly despicable I honestly can't understand how anyone could make it through or worse still enjoy this movie. (I certainly couldn't watch the whole thing)

I'm so glad two Miike films made it onto this list. He's one of my absolute favorite directors. I can't believe Cannibal Holocaust wasn't on this list though. It seems to tick all the boxes of the other films, but then adds on-screen animal death.
@@michaeltuz608 👍 They can toss in the more recent adaptation, too, but only if they use the director's cut. The Seventh Seal and 12 Monkeys should be on there as well. I have a soft spot for 28 Days Later.

It's not scary per se but Deadgirl absolutely deserves to be on this list. Talk about an effed up horror movie, ugh. Never found Texas Chainsaw Massacre to be disturbing or scary. It's just a poorly shot mess that I've never enjoyed.
I just rewatched hostel last night for the first time in forever. Its not as disturbing as I remember...maybe I'm just becoming more numb as grow older. *shrugs* still a great film, though.
Salo has a ton of historical relevance. De Sade through the eyes of fascism and Salo was the last place in Italy to give up support for Mussolini. It was also where Pasolini's brother was killed during WW2 so I sometimes think that whole movie is an artistic act of revenge.
It wasn't for zero reason, just very base reasons that nobody needed to think about. It was supposed to try and show some of the mindless brutality committed under Hitler and Mussolini but we all really don't want to know what awful shit those monsters did. And no matter how bad it was what Japan did to Koreans during WWII is infinitely worse. Seriously if you don't know already DO NOT LOOK INTO IT.
Ashtarte Yeah I do see the reasoning and the thinking behind it it’s just so unnecessarily savage. Too realistic. But yeah I guess it gets it point across just in a very overt way haha
Years ago I saw a film that was very realistic. I can't think of the name. Its about two girls who are staying in a caravan in a forest. One of them is killed and the other escapes. She later finds her friends body dead body in the caravan. The person who you think is the killer turns out to be the hero and the real killer is the cop that was investigating the case. Sooo... explain. Did you watch the film as well? If not, please explain what you are speaking about. I watch horror to learn about the fears of particular societies at particular times. That's why I watched A Serbian Film. It did disturb the crap out of me though.
I watched after reading an article, I believe in Rue Morgue, about controversial movies of the past; A Serbian Film was new then and named for its political commentary. That said, I'd not watch the movie again willingly.
How is The Human Centipede not on this list? That is the only horror movie that I will never watch again. All of these movies I've seen, Saw IV & Texas Chainsaw Massacre I have watched multiple times
I watched Audition at a movie party at a friends house when I was around 13-14. I'm 25 now and I STILL can't get some of those visuals out of my head. I'm a huge horror fan even and gore doesn't usually bother me, but that one makes my skin crawl.
Hostel is the ultimate example of gore over substance. Pure torture porn for sadists with no talent necessary on the part of the hack making the movie.

An excellent and thought provoking movie. It has some extreme "food porn" scenes but they didn't make me feel uncomfortable (YMMV of course). It's well worth watching, thanks for mentioning it.
I guess... I'll try to find it...? (If I dare... 😛)
@@NagataYuki5 Honestly I think it's worth watching ,the gluttony scenes are some of the most memorable but the movie stands out because it's actually about issues like friendship, illness, death and the meaning of life much more than it is a film about eating yourself to death (although that's the gist of it).
At first I thought you meant eat THEMSELVES to death and wondered how it wasn't horror.

Meh, already looks like guts.
Martyrs holds my gold standard for horror films that are actually horrifying. The fact that it is so VERY well-done cements that status in ways I doubt any other movie can ever unseat.
What was the worst thing that happens I want to watch but I need to prepare for the worst phaha
@ShotgunPvP
The worst scenes for me personally was the skin flaying, and when we see the woman(don’t know her name) that Anna rescues.
Have you guys seen the 1978 film, I Spit on Your Grave?
Hands down one of the best and we'll written horror films. So hard to watch at points. Love it hate it
@@awolf2393 I've only seen the remake.

Girl next door wasn’t bad Wasn’t a good movie, nothing great.shit got movies confused. Thought last house was the girl next door. Sorry bout that
Girl next door kill my insides in the last act
A Serbian Film is not a horror movie so I really doesn’t belong. I know a lot of list makers refuse to mention Cannibal Holocaust because they don’t want to support actual death performed on film (anima deaths) so that might be why that’s missing. And maybe The Girl Next Door isn’t a well known? Idk that one freaked me out A LOT.
Heather Taylor I think The Girl Next Door is mostly scary because it’s based off of a true story
A few notable gems that should replace the cult classics on list. Midsommer, I Spit on Your Grave remake part 1&2, Human Centipede, and A Serbian Film

Is this list based on quality or amount of gore
dude, you also missed Salo or 120 days of sodom. get real.
Horrifying human behavior grounded in realistic scenarios and made with enough artistic skill to be immersive is what makes a disgusting film really stick with you.

martyrs really scarred me and i think a big part of it was how it wasnt just a maniac on a torture spree like we're used to but an organization with a purpose that almost in some weird way made sense. And Salo was vile for zero reason - the whole film is long brutality for very little metaphorical reason!
If anyone knows the name of the movie please let me know.😀😀
