  • All rage attacks from Godzilla: Save the Earth are present in the PS2 version of Godzilla: Unleashed. The inputs were simply disabled by swapping out the rage mode flag with another one.

    2:03 Megalon's charge up sound is different here than Save the Earth. Sounds like it's using a sound effect from Unleashed Double Smash. Knowing this I bet they were going to keep rage attacks in but didnt have time for Obsidious and Battra. OR rage attacks caused way too much lag on top of the current slowdown issues they were dealing with. Awesome video!

    I remember always playing as Baragon in the PS2 version because once you reached critical mass, if you burrowed underground his rage move would activate! I didn't know the reason was because the Rage moves existed in the game (Albeit disabled). Great video, what a throwback!

      I had to go and test this for myself and wow it really works, you just need to press X + O once you're underground and voila. That just blew my mind!

      @@GreatNate98 Glad it worked for you! I always remember being so frustrated that the rage moves were gone (I didn’t even know how to activate the power surges back then either lol), but when I found that accidentally it was an entirely different experience! :)

      @@devinp.2934 Yeah I feel like if they kept the rage moves in the game it could’ve been something unique for it to stand up against the Wii version (also is it just me or do power surges just not _work_ half the time?), but hey at least Baragon got lucky! Great find, thanks for sharing

      I thought I was the only who knew this, when I first got it I thought you had to do the rage moves in a certain way like be underground, flying, rolling, or something unique to the monster so you could be more connected to your main character or something but nope it was they just messed up the game

    The more I think about it, the more Unleashed PS2 seems like a mod for STE rather than its own thing😆

      It really does lmao. The way they increased the military AI count for GU PS2 is pretty funny and feels like something a modder without access to the game's source code would do. The way the AI numbers work in STE is that there are multiple groups of AI, and each of these groups has its own AI count set in the level file. However, if the game detects that it is running on PS2 instead of Xbox, the AI count for each group is overridden with 1. This results in a reduced amount of AI military vehicles in the PS2 version. The developers of GU PS2 wanted more AI though. The logical thing to do would be to simply remove the code that overrides the AI count when the game is running on PS2. Instead, they set the platform value to zero, so the game thinks it's running on Xbox instead of PS2. Since it now believes it's running on Xbox, the AI counts no longer get overridden. But by changing this platform value, another Xbox-exclusive feature gets enabled which the developers did not want to enable. This feature is the "swoosh" trail effects, most notably used for Destoroyah's horn katana but also used for other attacks. They "fixed" this by just straight-up removing the code that renders these effects. It works, but it's such a strange way to go about increasing the number of AI when you have access to the game's source code.

On the subject of Rage moves, It's also interesting that the PS2 manual incorrectly states that in order to initiate a crystal surge power, you have to press X and O together, which leads me to believe that either it was planned from the start to scrap rage attacks for the PS2 port in favor of crystal surges during campaign mode, or it was an oversight in the manual/they changed the button combo to square and circle too late for the manual to be updated.

      @@525thegreywolf8 Nice catch, I never noticed that before. It does seem possible that that was the original button combo for power surges. I wonder why they changed it since rage moves were removed anyway. Another thing I noticed is that during the game's intro, you can see that the barriers are still green like they were in STE. The game otherwise looks pretty finished so it seems like the new barriers may have been another change made late into development.

      @@DylanRocket Oh wow, never noticed that either! Yeah the ps2 port is a mess but I suppose that makes it charming, one of the only reasons I really fire it up any more is for the sheer novelty from how bizarre it is. One last thing, like previously mentioned the "mod" feel also really shines too when you play Battra and the announcer voice is the STE voiceline for "Battra Airstrike" that they just cut in half to only say "Battra!" 😆

    Fun Fact. Baragon is the only monster that has his Rage attack still. You just got to dig and then trigger the rage attack

    This is starting to make me wonder what other Save the Earth leftovers might be hiding in the game's files. Any chance the old camera movements for the monster intros are in there somewhere? That'd be cool to see, as much as we all love the motion sickness-inducing 360 spin

      The old intro cameras aren't in GU, but I think importing them from STE would be possible.

      Ayasme shared high-quality GDAMM MP3 files in the GSTE Melee discord server. Along with the Vortaak cutscene music, these files include stereo versions of the victory and defeat music from the GameCube version, some unused "monster themes" (short fanfares like G:STE's monster themes), and an extended version of the high-score menu theme. The fight themes also include the original openings and endings that were cut to make the tracks loop, and all tracks sound much better than the game files do.       I think it was a misguided attempt to replicate the Wii version's critical mass which lacked any special ability. But I do wonder if the real reason they removed them was just so that they wouldn't have to make new rage attacks for Obsidius and Battra.

    This may have been asked by someone else before but do you think there’s a possibility that traces of STE Biollante exist in PS2 Unleashed?

      There are some traces of her, but her character bundle doesn't exist in GU PS2. Her tentacle turret functions are still in the game scripts and executable, and the executable has some references to her beam chargeup effect. It seems likely that the developers intended to include her in GU PS2 at some point because the monster select screen has a roar sound file for her but not for the other Wii-exclusive monsters. I'm guessing they decided against including her because of how unfinished she was, and they either didn't have time to complete her or just didn't want to for some reason.

      Google "roms megathread". There should be a website with links to massive collections of roms and isos for various consoles including the PS2. I don't want to link to it directly since my channel has already received a warning for sharing a link to a Save the Earth iso in the past.

      It is. A lot of what we've done with Save the Earth Melee can be carried over into GU PS2 due to how similar they are (except scripts, the GU format is super complex compared to STE). I ported Biollante from STE into GU but there are still some issues I have to fix before I can make a video on it or release it
