This was a good explanation. One question though, why do you refer to empty placeholders as "not"s? Why not just call them zeros? As an american viewer it got me confused with all the nots
It's 'naught', basically the same thing as zero. If you've ever watched British car shows like Top Gear, you'll notice they say "naught to 60" whereas people here(US) would say "zero to 60". Just one of the many differences in the two languages.
