  • Sex addiction, male impotence, infidelity, and dissociative behaviors are among Carnal Knowledge’s themes. College roommates share their views on relationships with the opposite sex.
    This is a review of Mike Nichols' 1971 comedy-drama CARNAL KNOWLEDGE written by Jules Feiffer and starring Ann-Margret, Jack Nicholson, Art Garfunkel, Carol Kane, Candice Bergen, Rita Moreno, and Cynthia O'Neal.
    Carnal Knowledge follows 2 Amherst College roommates and their sexual misadventures with a variety of women over a 25 year period. Jonathan (Jack Nicholson) devotes his life to superficial encounters based on sex; his friend, Sandy (Art Garfunkel), devotes his life to mentally stimulating but physically unsatisfying relationships.
    Ann-Margret received an Academy Award nomination for supporting actress as a large-busted sexpot named Bobby, Jack Nicholson was nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actor, and Art Garfunkel received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

    Ann-Margret’s performance is the best thing in this movie.

    • @godfatherofcinema

      Her performance was very, very raw and unsettling, but I think that Jack took it. This remains my favorite Jack Nicholson movie with Chinatown, another commentary you can find on my channel. Margret's performance was dark in this film to say the least and worthy of an Oscar nomination at the least.

      Rita Moreno was in this movie for about four minutes and she had like three lines. And she won an Oscar!

    I loved your review. I have newly subscribed. This is a frank and honest portrayal of how men really think about women. It is not prettied up or fairy tale; it is honest and real. I enjoyed it like I was watching a docudrama. Art's character was so sensitive and Candice character found Jack more exciting and challenging. I loved all the performances in this movie. The whole cast was stellar. I have not seen this movie in decades. Now I have a yen to see it because of your review. Thank You.

      Happy Sunday, Monique, and thanks for watching the video, subbing, and leaving this comment. Great Mike Nichols film. My favorite Jack Nicholson film along with Five Easy Pieces; great film if you haven't seen it. Carnal Knowledge doesn't pull any punches in peeling back the facade of civilization and showing what we really are. Love the conflict between Bergen's high intelligence against her carnal urges represented by Nicholson's character Furst. Great film and short at that. Garfunkel's a great actor.

    This is a really good film, its well acted, beautifully photographed and well directed. Nicholson was especially good and the director, Mike Nichols, actually made Bergen and Garfunkel credible. Bergen had never been before. But Nichols really did some wonders with her in this film as the nice girl.

    Interesting take sir and I agree with everything you said, but when I watched it I saw the movie trying to present how everyone’s lives were completely empty, especially Jonathan’s. His whole life revolves around getting laid and his constant fear of settling down is what binds him to immaturity. He is a very selfish character and the one time in his life he “loves” a woman is Susie, who ends up breaking his heart. I don’t think she was “wrong” in doing so, since his view of love has always been perverse and remains so throughout the picture. I still can’t quite put my finger on the Sandy character but he is definitely also a douchebag IMO.

    • @godfatherofcinema
      @godfatherofcinema  3 года назад +2

      I agree with you about jonathan. as for sandy, I think he showed the practical side of being a sexual being in a monogamous relationship. he still has desires but he doesn't submit to all of them like jonathan who ends up getting burned out by the end of the film by giving in to all of his urges.

    That movie was so boring. I saw it in college. What a snoozer. Oddly, I have this law: The worst in environment you are in, the better a movie will seems. So when I was living in NYC even "Darkman" seemed good--because I could sit in the dark and forget my problems. Living in Bulgaria even "Sex in the City 2" was watchable. Well, I was about to fail out of Stanford and was in a really bad news, but "Carnal Knowledge" could not tale my mind off of anything. That's how bad it was. The most boring thing ever. I vaguely remember almost seeing Ann Margret nipples.

    As a film it's a depressing bore. As a character study it's useful. Nobody needs to see this film more than once, and not even once (watching selected clips will do.). I'm afraid you Rorschached yourself with your review. The film isn't about what kind of men women want. It isn't about women at all. It's about what eventually happens to men like Sandy (who is more or less normal) and Jonathan (who is a pathetic sociopath).

      I've seen this film many times and love it. Different strokes for different folks. What I like about art how it changes in the eyes of who's experiencing it. I agree with your take on it but I also stand by mine as well. This is probably my all time favorite Jack Nicholson film as well.

    And Margret was a tub of lard? Boy they sure had a strict views about women’s bodies back then. I think she looks fantastic. And she should’ve won and ask her. Instead Rita Moreno one and ask her for her four minutes in the film I think she spoke three lines.

    • @godfatherofcinema
      @godfatherofcinema  3 года назад

      Was the reference to her being a tub of lard the opinion of a character in the film? And who should have won the Oscar is a subjective call although I agree that she had the strongest female role in the film. Awards are based on opinion anyways which is why I don't put much stock in them. They're not right or wrong.

    The movie was a cartoon of real life. Nicholson plays a psychopath. No one I know sits in front of a slide projector displaying women he had sex with since the age of 10. Huh?
    Certainly relationships are hard as we blend sex, love-making, communication and work in our daily lives. But this was a sexual farce.

    When this movie came out it was a big deal. There weren’t many movies that dealt with this topic. But then even then it was childish. The whole idea is simplistic and childish. So, the famous fight between Jack Nicholson and ann Margaret took whatever it was, two weeks, to shoot or something and is over so quickly. Any two capable actors would have pull that off in no time. It shows that there was something wrong in the filmmaking. But we’re not supposed to question it because the The godly Mike Nichols directed it. And he’s the same guy responsible for another childish sex film the graduate. At the time films like this were thought to be so mod yes. That was the hipster word for modern. Yeah I know it’s lame now. But these childish words in this, and the way these guys are using the women is not only outdated it was ridiculous for that era.
    However this movie May $28 million in 1971 money. It was because it was sort of like, “the dirty movie that you’re not supposed to see.” By the way, this is what gave art Garfunkel a film career and made Jack Nicholson a big star or at least it launched Jack Nicholson. But he doesn’t do anything extraordinary here.
    Today’s women will take the two guys in this film and find them disgusting embarrassing and push them out the door, close it and say, “…don’t let me ever see you again!”
    In those days these characters were macho man on the prowl looking for single women in the jungle of the city. And this was a look at The interpersonal relationships in the world of sex. But instead, it’s childish. For 15 minutes or half hour of the film sounds like two 12 or 13-year-old boys with dirty minds talking to each other.
    What a waste!

      Hi, Don. First, I want to thank you for taking the time to watch my analysis on this film. Secondly, I thank you for taking the time to express your thoughts on this film that my commentary is based on.
      Now to my perspective of this MAGNIFICENTLY TRUTHFUL AND HONEST COMMENTARY ON THE FEMALE PSYCHE.
      I am not a Mike Nichols groupie. In fact, I had to Wiki the guy for this analysis so my assessment of Carnal Knowledge is based on the assessment of a male groupie. I saw this film when I was probably 18. 35 years later from a perspective seasoned by a divorce, and many relationships later, I still like the film, infinitely moreso now that I understand things in the film at 53 that I couldn't at 18.
      As a newly minted MGTOW, i can attest to the fact that everything in this film is true: what women say they want is COMPLETELY OPPOSED to what they really want and I can prove this and you can too if you are willing to go to FB, or any social media site; or if you have any real-world experience, namely HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE.
      Let's start with social media. You read the profiles of what they say they want--which is the thesis of my film analysis--and you'll generally get this: "I want him to be sensitive"; "I want him to be intelligent"; "Money isn't important"; "I'm turned off by arrogance," etc. And yet, when you look at their MALE followers, friends, whatever you want to call them, what do you see? BAD BOYS, TATTOOS, FALLING TROUSERS, FILTHY MOUTHS, MUSCLES, SIX FOOT 2 BULLIES, CAVE-MEN. When you were in High School, who got the best girls? The Jocks, the future wife-beaters, the ones that took up half the class getting through 1 or 2 sentences because they couldn't read worth sh*t. In this film--Carnal Knowledge--who gets the smart girl? The cave-man! Not the bookworm, the good guy. You know this and unfortunately, our ex President did too when he made those remarks; and guess who came to defend him? WOMEN! This film is VERY BRUTAL in how it honestly exposes the latent desires that polite society would like to sweep under the rug. This is the short PG rated version of my reverence for this film's honesty.
