After years of watching such rail events, I do wonder whether the safety of those events is not adversely affected by the relatively high number of people that are always found in the driver's cab. I cannot escape the impression that the presence of several people in the driver's cabin automatically leads to the driver becoming distracted. Of course it's great fun for all those volunteers, but shouldn't it also be safe?

Absolutely, everyone in the cab takes safety very seriously, one incident would be catastrophic for the individuals and the railway.
