    Everyone keeps mentioning the CVT. Subaru built it with towing in mind, aka, planned the hardware for it. Also, the newest CVT's for Subaru are made from a chain, not a belt.

      I have always hated CVT's (especially Nissan and others that endlessly wind up) but the CVT in the Ascent is much better. It actually feels like it shifts and is really good overall.

    Thats impressive. I just pulled a 6500 lb 24 foot boat out of the water with my GX470 last weekend. I used low range and it was a breeze, but I wouldn't try beach launching a 24 foot boat no matter what I was driving. Seen too many buried axles... Just a heads up though Subaru...the AR240 is a hair over your max tow rating, especially with people/gear or fuel on board.

      Patrick Rich I've got a gx470 and a 2014 Forester xt and what's crazy about both the Forester and Ascent is that they put down similar numbers to the 4.7L v8 with 4 cylinders. I think the ascent does this on 87 too.

      The 2003-2009 GX470 was mechanically related to the 4Runner, you can look it up on Edmunds. The LX570 is more fitted to the Land Cruiser.

    • @PatrickRich
      @PatrickRich 6 лет назад +3

      DC Johnson not worth fighting about really but you are both right. The gx is just a land cruiser Prado gussied up with a v8. Same body. So yes technically it's a land cruiser. The gx and 4runner also share the same chassis and assembly point so they are also related. Long story short the j120 platform is both a land cruiser and 4runner. Also FJ cruiser.

    Subaru, the magic is the traction control not the AWD system. In short, it's not the go part that makes Subaru so awesome, but the near elimination of wheel spin is mind blowing.

    I have towed all manner of boats with Subarus for years. Nothing beats Subarus traction. NOTHING. If I had to pull my 3,500lb Boston Whaler up a wet grassy hill from where I park it in my backyard, gimme a Subaru. OH sure, any 4wd pickup, pathfinder, grand cherkokee, pilot, etc. will pull this boat up the hill, but only after turfing the grass repeated and tearing up your yard pretty badly. Not the subaru. It just neatly pulls the boat up the wet grass hill, no slippage.
    IT's amazing when you've done this and experienced the traction of symmetrical AWD. Other vehicles have more power, better transmissions and better mileage, but wheel for wheel, you won't beat the traction without a tank tread.

    The DRY weight of this boat (Yamaha AR240) is over 5000lbs. This means no battery, no gas, no supplies, no safety equipment, no anchor. This specific boat (reasonably loaded) boat will exceed the tow capacity of this vehicle. I suggest that the owners of the video clarify that this is a marketing stunt, and not a legal tow vehicle for this particular boat (would likely apply to any boat over 21' or so).

    As a Japanese that loves cars a lot, I have been surprised how popular Subaru cars are in North America.
    Actually, they aren't popular in Japan, cuz the so-called boxer engine does not have good reputation in my country.
    1. Heavy duo to extra number of parts.
    2. Difficult to maintain and repair.
    3. Burns oil and low fuel economy.

      I used to work for a marketing firm about 20 years ago that did major contract work for Subaru. Subaru used our firm among many others to market towards lesbians and earth conscience groups in North America. Which is why today you see that lesbian women and "save the Earth" folks driving Subaru's. Subaru found a loyal base among these demographics. Which oddly enough, Subaru is one of the least progressive automakers as it pertains to hybrid's and other "green" cars. However, the marketing campaign 20 years ago still associates Subaru as earth friendly. Quite a successful marketing strategy.

    • @brois841
      @brois841 5 лет назад +1

      @@haroldbeauchamp3770 I thought the marketing targeted those interested safety? All the commercials I've seen have been about parents feeling safe with letting their kids take their cars. Anyway, the reason I think it's popular, especially in the north, is the AWD system works well in the snow. Subaru's are also relatively cheap (good value) compared to the competition and have a normal/reserved look to them (nothing crazy/ugly/out there), which tends to work for most people. They also wouldn't look out of place in a concrete jungle or a real jungle.
      But what do I know? I don't even own a Subaru...

      @@anargoslife69 Even so, the aerodynamics of that boat and and travel trailers is vastly different. Not all 5,000 lb tows are the same. A boxy trailer is far more affected by wind while out on the open highway. The towing SUV has to be able to handle that wind. Proper towing equipment helps to do that, but the configuration of the SUV also helps. For example, when comparing tow capabilities of a Flex to an Explorer, on paper the Explorer is superior (both front wheel drive models). Yet, on many forums, the consensus is that the Flex is more stable than the Explorer on the road, because of its wider stance, heavier weight, and lower profile. And when towing with medium-duty SUVs, a few inches and a few pounds matter. Not saying that the Ascent cannot do the job, but let's see a real-world towing demonstration.

    Any subaru will pass this test for 100% . Its not muddy, and the sand is pretty dry (90%) from road to water. Standard Audi A4 quatro can do the same. Try a beach with real lose sand or a road with 50% wet grass and sand. Anyway not a good test.

    Who puts the trailer in that deep? That's crazy. If the trailer fenders are completely underwater, you've gone too deep.

    • @tonylwright
      @tonylwright 2 года назад

      You're kidding right? That boat was nowhere near the point of floating off that trailer. That Subaru would have had water coming in the rear doors in order to launch that boat. What you observed was a bunch of nonsense. Wasn't even that muddy. And that vehicle would never have launched that boat completely off the trailer.

    Isn't illegal to tow 2500kg with a normal license ? And that Subaru can't tow to much. No law in Canada / Usa ?

      Yes, in the US you can tow 5k lbs without any special license. Depending on the state you need to either be towing more than 10k or 26k lbs before you need to get a CDL (Commercial Drivers License).

      Serous question, have they found a way to eliminate or reduce carbon build up at 40,000 miles because of the direct injection turbo? I’m personally staying away from any direct injection turbo unless it has multi port injectors as part of the engineering. Turbos are killing today’s gas engines.

      @@82dupont it's not as big of a deal as people make it out to be. Some manufacturers have injectors in the intake plenum and use both. I don't know what Subaru does though. Most modern engines outlast the usefulness of the car, IMO.

      Ascent doesn't use, need or allow for a WDH or anti-sway system. It's supposed to be rear loaded (and the rear axle is rated for higher to accommodate it) and has a built in electronic Trailer Stability Assist system that does amazingly well. I know from personal experience, from towing a trailer that weighs almost as much as that boat and trailer, how well it works.
