I heard one of the judges say on Alicia Sacramone fx the step out of bounds Is a "silly mistake " .... now Simone Biles do it 2 times per floor routine.... my my how have the tables have turned 😮
31:00 see that's what I loved about Shawns work ethic, her and her coach agreed that time in the gym is important but time outside of the gym is just as important. It reminds you why you're passionate about gymnastics. If you're in the gym 24/7 with constant pressure it can really eat away at your happiness
But that is with anything though. Even with work and studying. At a certain point more time doesn't equal better performance. It is right around that 3 to 4 hours mark. If you spend 8 hours studying, I can guarantee you didn't absorb 8 hours worth of information.
Nastia has such beautiful lines. Wow! Shawn is just powerful. No wobbles just bam. Hit that skill and move on. It's just sickning how these gymnasts can do these crazy hard skills on a 4 inch balance beam
I think Shawn works the beam like she’s in the floor Naustia works the beam as if she’s dancing ballet they both are amazing one is power the other has elegance
+Sarah McClure I feel like team USA will always need a leader like Chellsie, she was fantastic. If Ali Raisman makes it for 2016, (which I highly suspect) she'll fit that role.

Marta did not like them. She did not let Bieger compete on both bars and beam at the 2005 worlds as she should have, instead putting Sacramone on all 3 of vault, floor, and beam, despite bombing beam at all the events that year. Mattie often called her out publicly so she hated her.
I think Jana got gypped time after time... Marta supposedly "HATES falls & LOVES consistency" & also really DOESNT like to take "specialists" on teams unless they're out of this world amazing- like McKayla M. on Vault in London- but shes supposed to prefer gymnasts who are more "all arounders" who potentially could be called on to perform on almost ANY apparatus & hit their routines time after time... JANA HAS EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THESE QUALITIES!!! She's not a huge stand out on any 1 apparatus, but, she's rock solid on EVERY ONE- she hits almost every time, she's so steady- she's a definite all around gymnast & she does generally score pretty well even if she doesn't do the absolute the HARDEST stuff- she still DOES do harder stuff than some of the other girls Marta likes more... You could have depended on Jana to put up a solid, high score that would have helped the team in Beijing on any event! I think she's definitely missing a bit of the "artistry & dance elements," & she doesn't have the lean, super straight, clean lines or build like a Nastia... But neither did Rebecca Bross & Marta was a pretty big fan of HER. I can't help but wonder if maybe her mom- might have rubbed some of the "powers the be" & big names in the sport the wrong way- what with her not being from the United States, a lot of times Europeans and Americans just express themselves VERY differently according to their cultural norms& it can rub people the wrong way. But, she's coached by her mom, and I think she got screwed out of so many team opportunities and bigger scores & along with that, missed out on a lot of top 3 finishes she deserved but maybe came in 4th or 5th by less than .3 or so. I can't understand what more Marta or anyone could have ASKED from Jana!! Which is what makes me think maybe it was something else that was the reason behind her getting screwed over so often. And if that IS the case- that's really a crappy thing to do- especially for "grown adults" to take out their own personal grudges with a PARENT on their kid! Poor Jana, 😭 she was amazing & rarely got rewarded for it or ever got the chance to show what she could do on the world stage...
They did Jana so dirty. Just like chellsie, Jana was able to hit all her routines and vault was probably the only thing she could have upgraded but that shouldn't have been enough for them to not treat her fairly. They DEFINITELY played favorites and while nastia is one of my all time favorite gymnasts, But her score being higher than it was on day 1 when she had all those mistakes on her dismount and late pirouettes was unexpected honestly. Her routine is no doubt difficult and one of the hardest even now but I feel like the judges were a bit biased.
Yeah they really screwed Bieger. She should have left USA gymnastics and gone to the German team (since they offered) where she would've been appreciated.

I do not understand how Jana bieger didn't the fair judging in gymnastics.. she was one of my favorites! She was actually the most dependable gymnast in that quad
Not in 2008 she wasn’t, unfortunately. By that time many other athletes had surpassed her in difficulty and execution (the deductions WERE there), and she really had lost a place with the team given how strong others had gotten. She was definitely on the other hand treated wrongly by the Karolys. Sad to say, she’d have been better off joining the German team- that would have at least gotten her to the Olympics- but definitely not a medal contender.
It’s crazy watching this in 2024 and being baffled at the scoring. I know the scoring system was new but whew…a lot of the routines would be lucky to score in the high 13s-low 14s these days
Judging was a JOKE. A 17.1 on bars with visible errors?? This competition is a prime example of how the US inflated their scores prior to Beijing and it came back to bite them.
Sorry, but you are just wrong lol. The entire quads scoring was inflated, because it was the first quad that did difficulty plus execution added together. The new scoring had a lot of issues, and really only levelled out in 2009.
@@josephqualtier961 Yeah bc she did better at the Olympics. She had a HUGE step on the dismount here. Back then in the code it was 0.3 (now it's 0.5).. you're telling me there was only 0.1 to take off from the entire routine? Get real.
As much as I love Nastia as a person and her gymnastics, she was so overscored. So many gymnasts were in the shadows, not getting the recognition they deserved. Jana, Mattie, Sam, Bridget. She deserved to be at the Olympics, but she did not deserve gold.
They do, but skills come and go depending on the code of points. A lot of unique skills while amazing to look at just aren't worth it because of their lower value.
You cant even compare them.. Shawn was one of the FIRST girls to do that vault, and she upgraded her vault just for the Olympics. She only had like what? less than one month to REALLY train it.. mean while NOW that vault is standard, they even down graded it to a 6.3 because girls like gabby and wieber and maroney have had way more time to be able to perfect it.
Ade O. She was actually even ready to compete it in 2007... i believe she first began training it in the gym in 2006, first started competing it in 2008
The Crafty Artist if you watch the routines side by side on the day of the Olympic AA competition, it’s clear that Nastia deserved the win. I’d love to debate this tho!
Same. Women can be incredibly cruel....teenage girls infinitely more cruel. I cannot even imagine at this elite level of competition how much worse it is. Just awful.
that's how progression works though; it could be said with any skill in the past now to present. There was hardly anyone performing the Amanar because of the risks back then; she was performing it alone and she was landing on two feet. a pretty good feat =).
Idk why but I feel bad for Jana, she was completely betrayed and left aside by USAG, I think she should have accepted her mother's invitation to compete in the Germany team, she would have been much better used, and would have her place in the Olympics practically assured. I think she should have opened her eyes earlier and lefted behind the whole "I'm American!" thing and realized that the USAG was just paying attention to the little group of gymnasts they had already formed and were rejecting her more and more
Her performance as time went on did not match those who made the team, that’s the reality. By 2008 you had to have upgraded your difficulty quite a bit- and she unfortunately didn’t. Germany would definitely have been a better choice, but if she’d gone she’d never have medaled.
right! now if someone performed it like that it would be considered bad but in 2008 there were hardly no one performing it due to the risk so the fact that she performed it alone was amazing back then.
So just throwing this out there but, Al made (for once) a decent point. He said, "in these days..... Bc we dont see very many of them, a stuck landing has to count for something." I feel like in this code and in future ones the gymmasts should get bonus to their d-score if they actually "stick" their landings..... What do you guys think?
Lex B I think there used to be such thing as a domestic stick bonus? Like, one of Simone’s Amanars (2015 nationals, I think) received a 0.1 stick bonus.
I feel bad for Shawn ( 28:19 ) sitting all by herself she never talks to anyone or at least she didn't until she got to the Olympics with her new team anyway.... I really like her she´s got the talent and all... but still my fave are Nastia and Alicia
They were all overscored. Nastia's dismount on bars is very deductable and she didn't hit every handstand. Shawn however had several leg separations on beam, had a low chest on her skills and on her landing, her splits aren't on point and her dance elements on floor are really questionable which weren't all credited in Beijing.
Shawn should have won the Olympic all around. My opinion. Personally I don’t take to Nastia. She seems to walk around with her nose in the air thinking she’s better than everyone else. Her red carpet lifestyle now makes her so unrelateable. I don’t actually know what job she does for it 😂
You can feel how you want about Nastia as a person, but she had the meet of her life at the Olympics. She was better on the day it counted. Also Shawn isn't that relatable. Unless it's common to use your child to make money.
Nastia won by six tenths in Beijing and was pretty much perfect on every event. Even if you say that bars specialists were favored in that quad, Nastia still deserved it. Her routine was so much longer and more exhausting than Shawn's, that's why her dismounts mostly looked bad. Nastia stuck her landings and had great form, no wobbles on beam and great landings on floor as well. She totally deserved it.
Shawn lost the AA gold because she made too many small errors in key places… while Nastia did not. Nastia won that gold medal fairly, regardless of how little children like you might feel. Adding personal characteristics to a gymnast’s capabilities and whether or not they deserve to be a champion? That’s the act of a preadolescent, small minded bully. Your self perceived insignificance is really showing here.
i was a big shawn fan back then! i wish she had done a bit more than she is now. like stuck with gym longer, gone to college even. i always thought she seemed like a smart kid.
...and i never seen anyone float across the beam with a mix of elegance, power, and precision...something Nastia lacks...Shawn definitely got robbed of the All-Around at the Olympics...idk why...possibly Nastia father's name, politics or both...Nonetheless...Shawn will forever be the 2008 Olympic GOAT...!
I don’t understand why Nastia changed her dismount to a double front with a half because her double layout was beautiful. I know it has more difficulty but she could have found another dismount that she did well and that added difficulty to her routine
I believe after her injury she a) couldn't land a double front on her bad ankle (see the 2007 Visas for her dramatic fall) and b) had grown a few inches to the point that she couldn't do the double layout anymore. I agree with you that the front + half was so often messy, but I don't know what other options her body gave her.
I do not agree 2008 is the first time the U.S had 2 women who could legitimately vye for gold in the AA the Olympics. 1992- Miller, Zmeskal 1996- Dawes, Moceanu, maybe Miller 2004- Patterson, Kupets 1984- (with boycott and Szabo`s famous nerves) McNamara, Retton Al know NOTHING about gymnastics.
While I agree the US has had 2 strong all-around era in the past, the fact is there were too many other threats (Szabo, Gutsu, Bogi, Milo, Khorkina, Zhang, etc etc) who factored in tremendously. Johnson/Liukin really were the top 2 options in Beijing
kras118 yeah it was the first time the U.S had the 2 clear favorites. However there were other times they had 2 possible gold contenders in the AA. Miller and Zmeskal in 92, Dawes and Miller and Moceanu in 96, Patterson and Kupets in 04.
Mocenau peaked WAY before the Olympics and messed up constantly the year leading up to them. As long as I remember Dawes was never even mentioned in the AA contention.
ajlove2013 whether or not Dawes was supposed to contend in the AA she LED the AA halfway through so she obviously was a gold contender. I know full well none of Miller, Dawes, or Moceanu were favored to win the AA or even maybe medal, but each were among those who could win the AA if lilia and Mo Huilan made mistakes.
The judge with the flag at 50:05 looks very much like the judge whose jaw dropped at McKayla's perfect vault during team finals in London--I just did a quick Google search to see if I could figure out who that judge was but no luck. Can anyone say how to access a lineup of judges for a particular meet?
Besides everything else that annoys me about Tim, Elfi said Samantha stepped on the line when vaulting, not over it, and he basically just ignored her.
how can you not think about an injury when your doing gymnastics like how many landings the injury can handle? of course your mind is going to be on that injury which takes your mind off your gymnastics a little bit

She won the all around that day fair and square. She was the best in the world that day and it mattered.
@@beambreakerI disagree STRONGLY lmao. You’re going to say her bar score and floor score was fair? Shawn should have won.
@@beambreaker let's not act like Nastia wasn't Marta's favourite
Of course she was the best in Beijing but she still had it easier than many girls
Is it just me or do the gymnasts do unique skills that we don’t see that much anymore?
They do, but skills come and go depending on the code of points. A lot of unique skills while amazing to look at just aren't worth it because of their lower value.
You cant even compare them.. Shawn was one of the FIRST girls to do that vault, and she upgraded her vault just for the Olympics. She only had like what? less than one month to REALLY train it.. mean while NOW that vault is standard, they even down graded it to a 6.3 because girls like gabby and wieber and maroney have had way more time to be able to perfect it.
Ade O. Shawn started training it in 2007
Ade O. She was actually even ready to compete it in 2007... i believe she first began training it in the gym in 2006, first started competing it in 2008
Ade O. Now it's 5.8
The revisionist history is strong with this one.
Shawn Johnson 4 life!
Watching in 2019 😂 in my opinion, Shawn should have won that all around gold in 2008 olympics, bars was the only thing that gave Nastia the gold medal
The Crafty Artist if you watch the routines side by side on the day of the Olympic AA competition, it’s clear that Nastia deserved the win. I’d love to debate this tho!
I do prefer Shawn’s gymnastics, but Nastia had the best day at the AA Olympic Final. Timing counts.
Nastia won by six tenths and was pretty much perfect that day. She absolutely deserved it.
Who’s here after Chellsie announced her comeback?!
I am!!😍🙋🏾♂️
The leos look so beautiful! 😀
This scoring is ridiculous! I do t know why the us judges do this it just gives the gymnasts unrealistic hopes

My heart started to melt when I saw Shawn Johnson alone
Same. Women can be incredibly cruel....teenage girls infinitely more cruel. I cannot even imagine at this elite level of competition how much worse it is. Just awful.
Watch her channel she says that was her and chows strategy to stay in right head space!
@@Star-ft2gd oh wow really so she wanted to sit alone? It made me sad... I thought, "lonely at the top".
She said she was instructed to do so 🤦♀️
that's how progression works though; it could be said with any skill in the past now to present.
I think she should have opened her eyes earlier and lefted behind the whole "I'm American!" thing and realized that the USAG was just paying attention to the little group of gymnasts they had already formed and were rejecting her more and more
I’m so angry she wasn’t on that 2008 team. I would have taken her over Bridget or Sam
I also wish she would have competed for Germany, she would have had more opportunities
Her performance as time went on did not match those who made the team, that’s the reality. By 2008 you had to have upgraded your difficulty quite a bit- and she unfortunately didn’t. Germany would definitely have been a better choice, but if she’d gone she’d never have medaled.
good god nastia's dad put alot of pressure on her!
we love being quarantined and watching these competitions
THANKYOU
nastia's score i thought was a little high.
It was the most difficult bar routine in the world, and she made it look damn good. Her score should reflect that.
Thats how you know shawn was amazing only trains 4 hours a day
Hey! Nashville's a fantastic city, Alicia!
99miyah great music scene!
@@gifthorse9779 lol, totally. I say that as a graduate of a conservatory there haha :)
If Nastia got rid of the extra mat on her bar dismount.. She prob wlda been more consistent w landing
right! now if someone performed it like that it would be considered bad but in 2008 there were hardly no one performing it due to the risk so the fact that she performed it alone was amazing back then.
Love seeing Shawn crush it!
My very favorite!
Watching this in 2019 makes me want to throw up knowing that not one of those adults protected these girls from Nassar!
Go Shawn Johnson
Its because its so well known to do to this day. Back then, no one else was even thinking about training the amanar.
I never noticed the rhinestones on Nastia's leo until tonight haha
Nastia’s routines
Vault 3:45
Bars 32:45
Beam 1:00:12
Floor 1:20:08
Wow... MAJOR over scoring
Different quad! the rules of scoring were changed in 2006, and they were still trying to balance the code here!
@@411MooCow It's also a domestic meet, even to this day you generally see higher scores at domestic meets.
I can't believe Alicia didn't get deducted for her 2 feet out of bounds on her second pass. She was visibly out of bounds!
9.150 as on that beam execution like what? is this college gymnastics or something like that???
I feel bad for Shawn ( 28:19 ) sitting all by herself she never talks to anyone or at least she didn't until she got to the Olympics with her new team anyway.... I really like her she´s got the talent and all... but still my fave are Nastia and Alicia
I know she always is sitting by herself and never really talks to anyone
Well she does that to herself... Maybe she needs to mentally prepare. I do that too
+YoMeMyselfAndI I feel bad for her too. I think she just needed that time to refocus and reenergize.
It was her and chows strategy to keep her in the right headspace
Nastia got several shameless overscoring there
They were all overscored.
Valeri had a successful gym when Nastia was still just a young girl. He didn't need Nastia to make money. You sound psychotic.
I feel like Sam was so underrated.
1:15:25 Whoa! How have I never noticed Andy Memmel's abs before?
i was a big shawn fan back then! i wish she had done a bit more than she is now. like stuck with gym longer, gone to college even. i always thought she seemed like a smart kid.
“Chow has coached Shawn since her first front roll!” Actually no, she went to another gym for three years before she went to Chow's.
Ok, but come on she started at Chow's as soon as it opened and she was only 6! That's pretty much from front rolls to Olympian!
Maybe he worked at that other gym?
literally i’ve never seen anyone else do that nastia luikin skill on beam other than nastia, GO BRIDGET!
...and i never seen anyone float across the beam with a mix of elegance, power, and precision...something Nastia lacks...Shawn definitely got robbed of the All-Around at the Olympics...idk why...possibly Nastia father's name, politics or both...Nonetheless...Shawn will forever be the 2008 Olympic GOAT...!
I can't help thinking of Catalina Ponor when I see Alicia Sacramone on beam. Kind of similar. Especially the arm movements and the flow.
Could you please post the Olympic Trials too?
I don’t understand why Nastia changed her dismount to a double front with a half because her double layout was beautiful. I know it has more difficulty but she could have found another dismount that she did well and that added difficulty to her routine
I believe after her injury she a) couldn't land a double front on her bad ankle (see the 2007 Visas for her dramatic fall) and b) had grown a few inches to the point that she couldn't do the double layout anymore. I agree with you that the front + half was so often messy, but I don't know what other options her body gave her.
Her form on that dismount was so sloppy.
Is anyone else comparing 08's visas with 12's visas as well? ;)
I do not agree 2008 is the first time the U.S had 2 women who could legitimately vye for gold in the AA the Olympics.
1992- Miller, Zmeskal
1996- Dawes, Moceanu, maybe Miller
2004- Patterson, Kupets
1984- (with boycott and Szabo`s famous nerves) McNamara, Retton
Al know NOTHING about gymnastics.
I do not believe USAG owns the rights to that broadcast.
Besides everything else that annoys me about Tim, Elfi said Samantha stepped on the line when vaulting, not over it, and he basically just ignored her.
Such a different mindset now, seeing Marta and these gymnasts, knowing what happened with Nassar.
I love Nastia but mann I really though Shawn should have won the all around!! Nastia has bars that’s it really
...Louisa Emma...i felt the same...
Shawn Johnson was ahead of her time.
Why does these beam routines seem
Harder in this era as compared to now ?
Shades of Simone Biles of shawn's Floor Exercise
Man, Chellsie's bars were FIRE. Oh for a clean routine for her in the Olympic quals.
Alicia's arm movements on the beam were a little much. I'm a fan of her in general, but I don't get all of the arm waving.
Can we talk about Chelsies dads physique? 👀🤣🥵
At 1:18:18 SHAWNS HAIR AFTER THE ROUTINE 😂😂😂
I like Jana and Ivana.
16.2 for Shawn Johnson on the Floor? WTF??? This is ridiculous!!
More more better than those of2016
how can you not think about an injury when your doing gymnastics like how many landings the injury can handle? of course your mind is going to be on that injury which takes your mind off your gymnastics a little bit
"Second place" is the worst thing"??!! What a horrible thing to say to someone you're coaching, especially your own daughter. It puts additional unnecessary pressure on Nastia, that's for sure.
I think you're taking this out of context. Valeri said it *about* Nastia, not to her, and he said it as someone who knew his daughter.
Marta never looked pleased with anything Alicia did... she was always looking "jealous"
The way Chellsie's bar routine holds up in 2023...
wait how did nastia get a 17 ijbol
Nastia was so elegant! ❤
They say Nastia Liukin so weirdly
It's because her birth name is Anastasia
Nahstia Leeukin
