Hall effect sensor tutorial - 3D printer end stops

  • This video shows how to use linear hall effect sensors to build end stops for 3D printers. The end stops are used to calibrate the absolute position of stepped moving parts. The end stops built in this tutorial are using magnets to detect the proximity of the magnet. The distance can be adjusted using a trim pot.

    Thank you! I wish I had this 40 years ago when I was early into electronics and wanted to make a CDI ignition for a motorcycle that had contacts. I can see how this would easily let you do what all the Japanese MC makers were touting as the greatest thing ever. I might still make one anyway. Great extra info about the PCB making too. makes the project so professional looking!

    This is so smart! I would suggest though getting a linear hall sensor not as an endstop but as a bed leveling sensor. By moving the sensor to the print head you get the added benefit of being able to use it for bed leveling.

      not sure if they don't drift at different temperatures... just like in curie point etc

      bitluni's lab look up 3Dtouch bed leveler sensor. It uses a small metal plunger that freely moves up and down and uses a hall sensor to read when it is pushed up by the printer bed to register the bed height. I’ve been using it for a a few months and it’s temperature invariant. It doubles as a z end stop and a bed leveler.

    So, you could run the output from either hall effect sensor board to a MOSFET gate driver (to power a MOSFET) to power an inductive load.

    First of all, thanks for your very good video! When comparing connections with the latch 1881KUA I saw that there a 10K resistor must be in between Vdd and out. Is it not necessary here?

    I used halleffect endstop in my voron and the problem is when the temperature inside the chamber is getting hot the distance of the magnetic area between the magnet and sensor will change, then the Z stop position will change too.

    one question tho, by using an amplifier, you converted the hall effect sensor from linear to switch. so why dont you just simply use a switch hall effect sensor? it will give u 5v if magnatic field is detected and 0v otherwise

    Congratulations on the tutorial!
    This circuit is very close to the Bltouch used for leveling the hot bed of 3D printers. Have you come to test the accuracy to prove it is usable as a hot bed leveler?

    Can you work with TCD Doppler and thickness gage transducers? I only understand basic principles but I'm not really into electronics. Do you think you could help me with a little project? I need to lineup and control 3 sensors (TCD, ultrasonic thickness gage and Hall) using a controller/pcb, and you make it all look so easy.

      I am very interested to see a repeatability/accuracy study using this technique. And by accuracy, I mean with a dial indicator to get a true value result. It seems to me that if home position is to be accurate, you need to repeat to within only a few thousands of an inch. (.1 mm)

    Nice work!! Would this give good resolution for a trigger set up? Want the magnet on the trigger and as you pulled it closer to the sensor it could give an analog out to a control and than the controller would convert to a PWM circuit to control an ESC. Want some range because it will be on and ESC. Even like to build some expo curves where it isn't as sensitive on the first percentage of the pull. What do you think?

      Sounds good.. then you can connect the linear hall effect signal directly to the analog pin... could work.. what kind of project are you doing?

      Wanting to making a transmitter and a receiver with an Arduino Pro Mini and the nRF24L01. Do them in a pair. The trigger can be open to water hence why i need the hall effect sensor and a magnet, the other compartment needs to be water proof.

    Just digital one without any boards is more enough. The magnet should pass the sensor for more accuracy. Not approach the sensor.

      it's called toner transfer. you need access to a laser printer and some glossy paper. you transfer the toner to uncoated PCBs. I am using sodium persulfate to etch. see this vid where I already explianed all steps in detail:

    bitluni's lab Great video, as always! It is scary how much our interests overlap! Mine are only interests at the moment, still just watching and learning, but you seem to have a video about everything I was looking for! Arduino, BT LE, magnetic sensors... You even have stuff about electronic audio which I used to be very in to!
    And what's really scary is: why aren't you a millionaire?! I understand you're having fun, but with so much knowledge and talent I just hope you're making a nice living. If you're not what hope is there for me...
