A friend of mine was present at the mall where they filmed the final scene with the lights on the pole. They used real electricity and is one of Chan’s most dangerous stunts. Anyhoo, he was just a kid and was with his mom. He missed witnessing one of the greatest stunts ever filmed when his mom made him leave because she “didn’t want to watch someone committing suicide”.

The 'replay' is a common feature. Big stunts are filmed from multiple angles to cut down on takes, and when the footage is good, Jackie likes to include it to show how difficult/dangerous the stunt is. He broke several bones with the mall drop, including his pelvis.
Jackie starts to do his own dubbing once his English gets better, but I always enjoy his films dubbed. There's a goofy charm about it, and the action is fast enough that you don't want to be distracted with subs.
Police Story 2 is alright, but 3 (aka Supercop) and 4 (First Strike) are my favorites in the series.
Drunken Master, Legend of Drunken Master (the sequel), Operation Condor, and Who Am I? are my favorites of Jackie's work. I highly recommend them. Always stay for the credits to see how badly he gets hurt for his art (he has broken nearly every bone in his body across his career, including a hole punched in his skull 😬).

His stunt team was the best in the world; some of the falls they took were incredible. And, of course, Jackie topped them all. 1985 but no one has done it better.(or as well).

Behind the scenes stunts normally ends up with bleeding heads and some fracture bones, safety wasn't so high up in their priority back then so no wire and almost all stunts have to be done by yourself.

FUN FACT: These films aren't actually overdubbed at all. The actors are all speaking perfect English then Industrial Light & Magic goes in and, using CGI, makes their lips do that. Now you know. ;-)

I was lucky enough to catch this on the big screen (albeit in Cantonese with English subtitles, rather than one of the English dubs that you're watching here) in the Prince Charles Cinema in London on the Thursday just gone; it was showing as part of a triple-bill that also contained _Police Story 2_ and _Police Story 3: Supercop._ It was so good to see this classic and two of its sequels on the big screen with an audience that cheered, clapped, laughed and winced (usually at the painful landings from the crazy stunts!), especially as all three films had been remastered in 4K, making them look and sound great.

A lot of films that Jackie Chan starred in contained an NG (“No Good”) reel at the closing credits (otherwise known as outtakes). This stems from when he worked on a film called _The Cannonball Run_ as one of four films he appeared in a few years earlier as an attempt to break him into the American market. The film did not do much to elevate his career there but one thing that he *did* take from the experience was the idea of outtakes at the end.
_Police Story_ itself stemmed from the last of those four attempts to break him into the American market; earlier in the year he starred in a gritty film called _The Protector,_ in which he was cast against type as a hard-boiled Chinese-American police officer. Chan often clashed with director James Glickenhaus, especially over the sloppily-edited fight scenes, the strong language and casual nudity. Jackie was so disgusted with the whole experience that he wanted to leave the production early but James' contract prevented him from doing so, but in the back of his mind he was probably thinking: “Oh, you do your cop movie *your* way. When I'm done here I'm going to go back to Hong Kong and do it *my* way!” - the result was _Police Story,_ and the rest is history.

In his Hong Kong files Jackie does choreograph all his stunts with his own stunt team... unless hes being directed by his 'big brother' Sammo Hung, another action star, choreographer and director who went to the same chinese opera school. Sammo is also called "the Fat Dragon' because, well.. hes a big guy, but he moves like a ninja. His movies are great too.. with just as much humor as Jackie's

Dubbing really depends on expertise and experience... well, and money of course. It seems to me that english dubbing is usually not that good (though it probably can be), likely because its just not needed often and not valued much. But here in Germany we have a professional dubbing-culture as EVERYTHING coming to us gets dubbed. Granted, many people don't like it and it sure is different if you grew up with it and are used to it, but here its a professional business and they often have actual german actors do the dubbing so they can get into the role.

    • @mrnice81

Oh, what i wanted to say with this: never saw this movie with english dubbing, its really bad. It's not perfect in german either, but much, much better.

This particular dub was done around 2000 by Omni Productions in Hong Kong, around the time Media Asia picked up the rights to the film. (Omni also dubbed it again more recently for Fortune Star.)
The only one I’d really recommend, though, is the original dub from 1985, also done in Hong Kong, which is included on the Criterion US and Eureka UK Blu-rays.

It is a bit of a tradition, for many Jackie Chan films, to have some behind the scenes clips, at the end of the movie. I knew you would be in for a treat, when you wished for some candid filming clips. Jackie Chan films typically aren't comedies, but they are usually humorous and light hearted. There are more in this series, and I recommend them. After PS 3, they start getting a bit more serious. There was almost a reboot, at around "4". and "New Police Story" gets REALLY serious. There's very little joy in it, but is is a pretty good film. It's VERY intense, compared to other JC films.
If you like martial arts comedies, I also recommend Stephen Chow. His films are more on the comedic side, than the action side, but they're still pretty good. Some of them have some pretty good (& hilarious) choreography, though they rely more heavily on effects & stuntwork. They aren't Chan level. I recommend "God of Gamblers", which also goes by, "All for the Winner". It's a great blend of comedy AND action. There are a few chapters in THAT series as well. By they time you get to "God of Gamblers III" aka. "Back to Shanghai", it's a full comedy, and it's hilarious.

I had a VHS copy with English dubbing long ago, which is funny as hell. The voice even sounds like Jacky. I fear you may have a DVD dubbed version, which is weird. And the subtitled one isn't as funny. The VHS one he was Kevin.

Still....the americans can't cope with what the rest of the world have been coping with for a hundred years; Subtexting (which is almost obligatory in my country), and dubbing. Why is this so hard for you? And more importantly, why do you look down on movies that are subbed or dubbed? There's nothing wrong with that. You don't rule the world....no matter what you might think.
