This was a incredible video and I am deeply thankful for it.
The wolf for me doesn‘t feel like just a spirit.
Every step I take, every breath and every heartbeat of mine is wolf.
When I stalk through the forest, tuning my senses to my surroundings, longing for the hunt and the run.
The woods are my home as they always were and in the dark it is the great wolf that leads me.
Even as a child I was wild. I ran through the mud on all fours, bit and snarrled when angered or scared and often slept outside with the dogs before my mother came and got me.
The wolf is me and I am the wolf

Some beautiful observations you bring. Some quick thoughts:
I think some of the Bear--cult in Scandinavia was influenced by circumpolar Bear-cult traditions, including the annual feast. In this Bear is shared among the tribe, inspiring, but partaken cautiously, and in some tribes the women would only look at the bear through a ring of copper (or brass), to filter its influence so that it would not possess the babies in too much measure.
The trouble with wolves is also the power of Wolf. It is as much as a danger to the ruler as it is potent as an ally. Wolf cares about its pack above all else, before all else. A ruler can hire the pack, and receive mighty service, but Wolf does not wear the collar. If the ruler would cheat or betray or try to enslave the pack, they will turn on him. It is the folly of the ruler that he makes an enemy of the pack, and they will howl at his borders and bring ruin to his flock and his house.
As for Bear... Bear is a mighty guardian, and will guard what is most high in virtue and labor, even the houses of the gods. Still, we do not work for them. Bear works for Nature. Betray Nature, pollute the land with your vanity, and Bear will devour your endeavors in the season of waking hunger, and no other creature may prevent him in his moods. At other times, Bear is relaxed, tolerant, easygoing and generous with even the fool, and especially the children.
These changing seasons of Bear cannot be commanded by the ruler, and so he must be careful of the mood he has brought among his guardians. When Bear ceases to protect the unworthy, then impartial Nature (or the Norns, if you prefer) may bring down the houses of kings, and even gods. This has happened more than once.
I think you know much of these things. Of course, I also think you have Owl with you. This may not mean what many people think it means.

"Howl once in a while" I learned this a 5 or so years ago when I used screaming and loud sounds to try and help relieve stress. I ended up starting to do a type of Howling because it hurts the throat less and It made me feel a bit more... free and connected with the wilds.
This was good to see and listen to. Thank you for this.

Beautiful message in the end 😍 it remember me a part of a song: " only in the darkness will you find your true self, howl to the moon to awaken your spell, one cannot judge what the eye cannot see, outside the realm of humanity, embrace your fear, dont dare to run, only then will you be what you're mean to become "

high arith. really enjoyed that intro. oowwooooh. hahaha. tattoo's can have totem powers. when i was young i joined the canadian army. i had got tattoo's of the hawk the panther fighting the serpent. in my mind i felt i gained the eye of the hawk and the speed of the cat. this was not so deliberate as it was instinctive i realize now. we are our ancestors. even though i'm a completely modern person with science based beliefs. i enjoy your interpretations of our myths and can easily compare the two. space and the void for instance. u seem to have a pretty good handle on the ideas. it seems quite a few ancient peoples left bodies as carrion for birds. as i watched i mused how hindu seems similar sometimes. very enjoyable. thank yew gare

    Hallo Arith
    Another great video. Thank you.
It was great also to hear your comment concerning the eagle atop of Yggdrassil. I have also thought this eagle to be a manifestation of Óďinn.
I have thought that seeing Yggdrassil as also being a tree of knowleddge, the higher you climb the further you will be able to see or the more you will understand,
An entity with the mind of a God would surely have a bird's eye view of many things
Continuing with the idea of Yggdrassil as a tree of knowledge it is interesting to me that Óđinn hung from the Yggdrassil to acquire the runic alphabet and that paper also comes from trees - though in ancient times people often wrote on vellum, which might have been made from deer skins -.
I have thought that much of what is required to record and convey wisdom and knowledge is right there in Yggdrassil.
Once again thank you and I do hope you dont mind me sharing these thoughts with you.
    My Good Wishes
    Bríain

I was gifted a story book once about a dancing bear who was freed by a certain man and allowed to roam freely on his large property, where it was able to regrow it's wild claws and learn to fish wild salmon from the river. And then the man purchased another younger bear which became a companion for the first, and the first bear taught the second bear how to fish. When I read this book, I would cry and cry every time.

Wonderful video. One note, Ravens are Carrion birds as opposed to birds of prey. Carrion eaters (Ravens, wolves, etc) are associated with Óðinn in his role of psychopomp while the Eagle leans to his power in war. This is why I also see vultures and other carrion eaters being associated with Óðinn as well. I enjoy your insights and the well constructed videos. Keep up the good work. Great to know that. Ullr is one of the 4 deities my ancestors honoured (the last pagans I've met from my family, very old and wizened) and I've been trying very hard to maintain that. So that makes two of us; Ullr is indeed a very interesting deity.

I have a statue of him on the altar above my desk. I love Winter, my attachment to him becomes, therefore, sort of natural! As we live right against the mountains here, Skadi is another one I have represented. I had read before that he was the likely chief of the Aesir before the Odin cult supplanted him. I realize there is nothing specifically said to this effect, but it seems Ullr is somewhat heremitical and stays apart from the other Gods. Being a hermit myself, I resonate!

Very cool, all your videos are very informative. I feel drawn to shamanism, my last name actually has "shaman" in it (despite being an indian name)... even that root word sha, sham, is something I have seen in many diff cultures and languages, and can mean various things like shah for king or ruler, or sham for sun or evening/twilight, and I remember u mentioning how twilight is like that bridge btween day and night or the physical and spiritual worlds.
I like the idea too of totems as it reminds me of the chakras and various animals associated with it (animals btw reminds me of the greek word "animas" which is also a reference to spirits that reside within).... but with the chakra system or the 3 worlds of the body, u got the serpent in the lower realm, the tiger/leopard in the middle, and the hawk/eagle for upper realm.... this is even symbolized with the griffin who is a mix of a lion, eagle, and snake. I wonder what my spirit animal is, I have not really been devoting enough time to getting in touch with my spiritual side.

And now I know part of where I come from. The bird visions/conversations I've had make sense but I'm still trying to figure out the blue pyramid, and the blue crystal tunnel vision I had.
One vision I had that particularly related to the bird was of a necklace. This necklace was only to be found at the tip top of a mountain, the necklace was described visually with an abstract psychedelic concept of 2 parallel lines that intersect; a black and a white pillar leading up to the "eye of perception" as I call it. I could also describe it as a long straight road that goes off into the sunset, with the sun setting on the tip in the horizon.
P.S. thank you so much you may or may not have an idea of how much you've helped me!

Fascinating and informative as always. Thank you for the video. I was completely unaware of the warrior wolf cults or plant totems before watching this.
Perhaps I've missed a discussion of this topic in earlier videos, but if birds were once thought to carry away fallen warriors, does that mean the Valkyries "evolved" from birds - perhaps eagles or ravens? (I'm not quite sure how to express this idea.)
I especially enjoyed the cinematography in the opening section; It was very beautiful and interesting.

Valkyries have been associated with ravens many times, much like the Celtic goddess Morigan who shapeshifts winto a wolf and also raven, and ravens are hers to send into the battle field, just like Odin's ravens. It's what occasionally happened after a battle - a feast for ravens. Thank you so much for your feedback friend ^^

The bear was also a totem in the ancient Gaule, as we can see on the sculpture of the goddess Arduinna, like to the small mountains Ardennes. But bear becomes a major symbole in celtic culture with king Arthur, whose name could have a vocabulary root with it. In Ireland wolves and ravens are linked to the Morrigan, the enigmatic war goddess. I think totemism is still a meaningful practice, even if modern education breaks our links with nature. Totemism remains spiritual, in the way witches are taught by spirit and this can be a wolfe spirit or else...

    • @ArithHärger

Thank you very much. I believe so yes, but so far I was absolutely astonished when I played Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, they really captured the Norse spirituality in a way I had never seen before. Especially if you join the Thieves Guild and then the Nightingales, the concept of Hamingja is perfectly explained without saying it's Hamingja, but it was one of the best explenation so far. This is just one single example. But of course, you already have to know the basis of Norse spirituality to be able to catpure the concepts in that game. I have loads of books on Norse spirituality but honestly, I cannot recommend any because so far they aren't that good. I'll advise you to try to read academic works on Seidr, perhaps the ones written by Marianne Guckelsberger and especially Eldar Heide.

Great videos Arith. Finally, a channel that feels right. My question is, in the old traditional ways. Did the totems pick their human hosts? And were all birds of prey totems? I never hear much about them.

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +3

When it comes to Scandinavia it's really hard to track totemism, but if we take in mind that humans moved to scandinavia during the last glacial period and they followed reindeers and elk from south to north, we might understand totemism. There are many similarities between prehistoric Iberian Peninsula and prehistoric Scandinavia, some of the concepts, ideas, religion and spirituality remained the same. Birds seemed to have played an important role in totemism as creatures that took the dead into the after life, mostly ravens and eagles; those are the birds most depicted in rock engravings and head and body dresses in prehistoric ceremonies and warrior rituals. There might have been other birds of course, but ravens and eagles were definitely the most used in religious symbolisms.

@@ArithHärger OK, one more question and I will leave you be. What was the significance of the hawk that appeared to be sitting on the eagles head in the picture of Odin in the Tree of Life?

    • @ArithHärger
      @ArithHärger  6 лет назад +1

Don't worry, ask away, no problem. Sometimes it takes a while to answer or I don't answer at all because it's a lot of people at once and I'm just one and sometimes a few questions slip away my attention. In many cultures the hawk was a symbol of royalty. Hunting has always been a initiation rite into the warrior culture and then a way to practice killing and training the skill with weapons. Everyone could have a spear or bow and arrow to hunt, but hunting with a hawk was not for everyone, only the wealthy, only royalty. Hunting small game with hawks was for royalty because it was expensive to own hawks, train them and breed them in captivity. The hawk became a symbol of wealth and power, a symbol of the elite and their right to hunt. Power coming from above, deadly and precise.

I can't really howl... But I can make a sound like a bear digging for roots. I believe in the Honey Eater who is King of the Forest.
Of particular interest to those who are curious about the continuity of Bear Cults, The 46th chapter of the Kalevala and the Iyomande/Iyomante festival of the Ainu are very nearly identical. In both, a Bear is invited into the village, is given gifts to take to the spirit world, is told they are most welcome to be there and they have waited so long to see the Bear, is asked to send more Animals to be given feasts by the people, is released from his form, is eaten by the people together with cakes and alcohol using the best dishes the community has which are only used for this type of event, grateful prayers are said to the chief deity, the fur is partitioned among the people who attended the ceremony. They differ mostly by the length of the Stay of the Bear to receive gifts and in localized flavor. The Finns and Ainu are not genetically or linguistically related. But, far too many things about their Bear cults is the same to be a coincidence. Food for thought, and perhaps somebody has an answer.

Even though corvids (ravens, crows and magpies) are seen as ‘corpse eaters’ the are actually opportunistic eaters. Imagine that you’re a raven and you’re hungry. Your beak and claws are not sharp enough to pierce the flesh of something that has died, so nuts, bugs, other bird eggs, peoples trash and scraps around villagers is all you have. Then there’s all this noise and commotion and look! Humans are fighting! Those left on the ground have easy things to get at and eat. Eyelids, eyes, lips, most of the nose, lips, cheeks, and then there are the rips, tears and holes left in the bodies from the battle. A buffet hidden away, but if the humans come back and rip all the cloth, leather and metal away it is like a grand feast!
The ravens did not have to look far, put themselves at risk for the food, all they had to do is wait for the humans to fight and they always fight. Once ravens and crows know where or how to get easy food, they will return.
Crows and ravens will caw loudly around a felled animal so that a wolf or coyote comes by and tears the flesh so they can feed.
That habit of getting easy food, was how they were believed to be just “corpse eaters” and omens of evil.
