What I’ve come to realise is that you don’t lose all digital connectivity with a dumb phone, as it’s still there on your laptop/PC, which you use while at home. What you gain is the mental freedom when you’re out and about

As a fellow sunbeam owner, I couldn't agree more! I am only about a month into using my flip phone, but I can echo so much of what you've said in this video. While sometimes it does require more planning ahead and intentionality, it has definitely paved the way for me to a calmer, less frazzled way of living. And now that I'm not spending 20+ hours a week on my phone I have been doing so many more creative hobbies!

@@AlexanderY18 Hi! I know this is late, but the buttons are plastic, and I would describe them as "softly clicky" I guess. They don't make obnoxiously loud clicking sounds when typing but there is a nice gentle tactile click.

I agree with your thoughts. Smartphones often cause waste of time and health problems. Also maybe you could add: people have the right to be oflline. It used to be a luxury to be famous for ten minutes, now it's a luxury to be able to disappear for ten minutes. Do not get tired of sharing your ideas with us. greetings from Turkey.

Believe it or not; there are still some people who think this is an easy transition. I've dabbled in the transition to a flip or bar phone but I will be required to use a smartphone because of my job. The main things I want to switch to a bar or flip phone is because the features are less intrusive; you can lower your monthly bill costs on your phone bill; and if you decide to upgrade to something with a little more to offer; it's not overly expensive comparing to smartphones today. I really admire your journey and I love that you are committed to this lifestyle change. I hope I can find ways to incorporate or even make the switch entirely but people often forget; this is a process. It's not an instant switch where you just pop your SIM in a feature phone and boom; you're good... I've been back and forth for years on this but I think this year might actually be the year I finally make the jump... I just really wish that if they improved anything; give a great camera (so I don't have to miss the one on my smartphone) and great battery life... I think Sunbeam is in the right direction with that one :)

I've had the same experienced you mentioned at 3:45 countless times, and it's really remarkable to see just how many people realize there's a problem without taking steps to address it. I think people see phones like the Sunbeam (or other minimal phones) and something in it calls out to them because they know they need change and reconnection. Not just disconnection from social media, but reconnection to the self and to others.

I came across a review for Sunbeam wireless phones and finally ordered the Daisy. I had an old Samsung flip phone I had to replace. The Daisy is easy to use and quite an improvement in that texting with a touch screen is much faster for me and with my hearing loss, I can hear much better with this phone. I do more than enough computer time on my laptop and don't want to be sucked into more. The security features as well as no bloatware, spyware etc, also attracted me to this phone. The phone also fits easily in my pocket.

I'm 68 and I misplace my iPhone all the time. Like most people nowadays, I no longer (over 4 years since I lost my husband) have a landline. I'm not ready for the Life Alert type devices but I have considered getting a secondary phone, which causes me to ponder whether to get an android smartphone or a newer iPhone (I currently have an XR) or should I just get a dumbphone. Now I'm really leaning towards the latter. I just want a phone to be able to call or text if the smartphone decides to play hide and seek. It always shows up but in the meantime I freak out that something will happen and I won't have a phone get help. Thankfully, I haven't had to resort to that! Now, I just need to decide which dumbphone to get...

As somebody who has never enjoyed talking on the phone, not even when I was a teen back in the 70s, I'd be happy to go back to just having the old phone on the wall at $7 a month. I have a dumbed down tracfone that I don't always take with me. I'm retired, do a lot of walking and am basically a contented homebody. I worked from home for years on my desktop PC and use that to pay bills. I did get a Magic Jack as a home phone, thus saving $40 a month that AT&T was charging me. I never did care about taking pictures, texting or having apps. I unplugged from cable years ago and am happy with my Roku.

I have so many WhatsApp groups for work and things like that, I'm at the stage where I have had enough with it all. I already have a dedicated music player I carry everywhere, so I will post back and let you know whether or not I'm surviving with the change. I've been thinking on getting a dumb phone for a while and this is the reassurance I needed to do so, it's come to a point when I get anxiety just picking up my phone, and I've been SO isolated from everything and everyone since the pandemic began that I think it's getting to an unhealthy point, I don't need a smartphone for my job, I don't have the constant need of replying emails and such and just had the greatest experience once when I dropped my iphone 6 at home and the screen just shattered and had to be somewhere else like in five minutes, and I swear I've never felt so free as I did back then so I really want to enjoy the experience again, I think I'll be going for a refurbished LG lollipop 😊

I never wanted a smart phone. I have a land line, my laptop, (no tv - limited income) and a cheap pay as you go flip phone. Since the 3g went away I had to get another flip and it has much more on it than my much smaller virgin mobile had. I like the size of my old flip phone. I only need my flip phone for emergencies since there are no more pay phones around. Besides it keeps a person in touch with real life interaction and I like that. Glad to hear your getting your nose out of a downward position and noticing what is around you and what you have been missing. Have a great going forward.

Thank you again! You are using your phone almost exactly as I use mine. You-tube and the Facebook stuff deleting didn't get rid of are my social media, which I use my Mac for. But the camera is something that changed my photographic life. SLR's DSLR's tripods etc. Then Pixel put a real camera on a phone! Always in my pocket, I rarely miss a shot. Something I will need to address. A DSLR doesn't fit in a shirt pocket!

The $20 Alcatel Smart Flip from Target with Tracfone service is a good basic phone option. I use it as my go to phone more so over my Pixel 4a.

So glad people are waking up to life! Congrats on discovering your social programming. I thought i was in the wrong career for years, due to social programming, until only a few years ago. My DNA was much stronger. Now i am embracing that field again, only as a retiree. I am switching to a nokia 225 (just waiting for sim) and i feel relieved. i was wasting too much time on it and the computer. i am going to make it an mp3 player as well for when i take bike rides.

Sorry if this is long, I tend to ramble, but I'm actually planning on getting one of these! The orchid because I like having navigation because even though I legally can't drive (Epilepsy Won't let me have a long enough time to get my driver's permit, much less a license) I like having directions when I go walking around towns, and having weather info is SUPER important for my walks, ESPECIALLY because it snows here in the winter, and I'm not fully used to snow since I moved from the south to my current state. I'm probably gonna keep my smart phone for voice recordings (I have too many thoughts and my handwriting is very bad so voice is better and it'll also help me quickly get things I need to remember down) and my music (don't wanna move it, I have it all downloaded) and the McDonalds app (I go there enough that I can use points for free food often and it's useful for that and I can't do stuff like it on a laptop unfortunately) AND a hotspot for my laptop, but I'm gonna do majority of things on a laptop or the phone! I genuinely wanna disconnect, and I know I can't COMPLETELY do it due to some stuff I don't wanna get into, but having a non-smartphone is PERFECT for helping me out with that.

I lived decades before any cell phones then with cells but not smartphones, and navigation apps were the reason I got an iPhone in 2008. I travel for work and getting lost in an unfamiliar place is scary. I like the ability to deal with flight info, my internet of things apps etc. I don’t want to give up my smartphone, however, you’ve given me some ideas of how I can disconnect a bit more and not be glued to my screen. Thanks for the interesting perspective.

I want to get a feature phone also. Your sunbeam looks like a good option. I WANT TO QUIT MY STUPID SMARTPHONE! and this couple of your videos help me move in that direction. I may have to carry arround the smartphone as it is the key to my office building but I will use it as a secondary device and use my feature phone as my main one. Thank you love. You are both pretty and smart :)

Hey Ashton, great video, thanks for sharing your insights. How do you deal specifically with the conundrum of group chats and their increase in popularity? I'm thinking WhatsApp groups, Signal groups, etc. How do you mitigate for that using your flip phone?

    • @araz5367
      @araz5367 2 года назад +3

i just started using a flip phone recently after watching this video and had the same concerns - I ended up whittling down which whstapp groupchats I wanted to stay in (i went from like 20 groups to 3 lol) and found one person from each group that I wanted to add to my contacts in my new phone (I limited my contacts list to family and close friends) - so If i ever really need to check in on what is going on in a groupchat (which doesn't really happen cuz i think i overestimated how often i needed to check in on these groups) i can just contact that one person - also you could check whatsapp online? so that its away from your phone - or even keep ur old phone and check it once a week? i hope that helps!

@@araz5367 Thanks Ar Az, some great suggestions there. I went to a dumb phone for a while last year and I kept my old smart phone on WIFI and checked it every couple of days for WhatsApp. Ideally I would like to have not needed the smart phone entirely. Unfortunately I don't think you can use WhatsApp in the browser without the use of your Smart phone to validate the login. If anyone knows a way around that I'd love to know about it...
