These two in particular are made to stand out in similar ways: In regards to Pilar, he was the first member of the Runner Crew to die, it was to a CPsycho as you pointed out, and when it happens they give us 3 quick flashes of the moment from different angles. Then we come to the last episode, and the last member of the Runner Crew(Aside from David himself) to be killed, by the most well known CPsycho Legend in the lore(Functioning as he is, he is definitely considered a CPsycho by even Pondsmith himself). And the moment of her death is flashed for us, 3 times from different angles. Pilar and Rebecca were siblings, and for David, their deaths marked the beginning and the end of the downfall of his short life as an Edgerunner.
Fun fact: In the actual game, there is a section of drinks you can buy named after legendary cyberpunks, and David has one named after him. To top it off, the drink was there before the anime even came out

David failed to realize it wasn’t Lucy’s dream to go to the moon anymore. Her dream was always to get out of Night City, and whenever David was there she was able to escape. Such a bitter sweet ending. You can see she’s not happy. The only second she smiles on the moon is when she remembers David.
Adam Smasher saying, he had "some fun after all" is a huge compliment. He's a beast. The ending killed me. When I play the game, that song hits me hard. David's death was pretty obvious (still very, very sad), but killing Rebecca... It was unforgivable!!!
Yeah, After I finished the anime I had to replay the game and beat up Smasher with a dildo, it just felt like the right thing to do after everything that happened, sometimes I wonder if David could have beaten Smasher if he wasn't connected to that big stupid suit, I feel like the suit really hindered his performance in the fight.

He battled MilTech, Arasaka, and it took Adam Smasher to finally put him down. The best part? David died as a _legend,_ And he got the best girl _Lucy_ that she smiled, took a deep breath, and embraced the sunlight at the end.
David cared for other people, he achieved their goals for them, Maine wanted to die a hero, David did that for him. Lucy wanted to go to the moon, she did. David got to the top of arasaka tower for his mom. But if you were to ask these people if they were happy with the outcome? They'd say no. David is too selfless

No, shooting through David's brain after he said he didn't want to be a construct was the biggest respect he could give. Adam has no problem dragging most people kicking and screaming to be turned into robotic slaves (in fact he enjoys it), so him not only making sure Arasaka wouldn't be able to do that, but denying himself his own sadistic pleasures is the clearest and highest show of respect he can give.

In the flashback you see him take a few shots at Smasher then escape, but most likely he got cutdown immediately. Shaitan was the only one who could go toe to toe with Smasher but in the (fake) flashback he gets injured by some defenses and Johnny goes in solo.
Adam Smasher is the Darth Vader of the cyberpunk universe. He became more machine than man, is feared by people who should know him and treated as a boogeyman by the rest, is OP and terrifying as hell, and his cameo consists of bodying the protagonists before leaving and refusing to elaborate.
The crazy part is that he's SO strong in-lore that people legitimately think he's fake. Because he comes in, obliterates EVERYTHING, and then just leaves before witnesses can see him. He's a walking apocalypse

When Adam said he would’ve been a good construct he was referring to basically a digital copy of David. Just like Johnny Silverhand in the game. In a way Adam spared him from living in a digital hell for eternity.
doubtful. Adam Smasher literally never tried during this fight. He was utterly casual in obliterating everyone with pretty much no difficulty, David never had a chance, saving Lucy and Falco was pretty much the best case scenario.
With how damn depressing this ending was, I was worried Lucy was gonna just take her helmet off on the moon. 🤣🤣🤣 Man..what a show! Would love more series set in the Cyberpunk universe from Trigger, they NAILED this.
While I know that Lucy bringing David back from cyberpsychosis might seem like a typical power of love copout, it actually adds to the tragedy surrounding Night City. Canonically, the most effective treatment for cyberpsychosis is just...a therapy session. But it costs way too much, so the people who need that treatment can't get access to it.

David is a fantastic protagonist in that it is incredibly difficult to pinpoint where the line between environmental factors and personal factors that effected his fate actually is. On one hand Night City is incredibly unforgiving, his mother's death frivolous and random, and life is treated as incredibly cheap. On the other hand you have someone who enjoys the feelings of being strong, who is constantly shown to be impatient, and who definitely has a self-destructive streak. He is also one of the few protagonists that doesn't have some lofty dream and in fact only reaches a sense of satisfaction when trying to fulfill someone's else's.
Fun thing to know is that in the original TTRPG Cyberpunk came from your resistance to cyberpsychosis is based on your Empathy. The one thing that made David special was his above average empathy for other people, plus explains why the “power of love” can help manage the effects. Favourite theory about cyberpsychosis is that it’s actually a coverup for the mental breakdowns that people keep having due to the stress of living in Night City. When a normal person snaps they can end up committing crimes of passion that they later regret, now apply that same idea to someone who has implants designed to give them super strength, super speed, and super reflexes, or even just anyone with access to the dozens of weapons that litter the streets.
Another thing to note is that in the opening, the silhouette shooting David has a bunch of building in it. Alluding to the fact that David's death wasn't because of one singular person, but the city itself. David got killed because of the fcked up city he lived in.
This show is the epitome of Johnny's word "For folks like us? Wrong city, wrong people". There is no happy ending, no closure, just the bittersweet depressed feeling that the song "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" leaves you everytime you hear it.
David never really had any goals or dreams from the beginning and so he decided to make others dreams come true. He made it to the top of Arasaka tower as his mother wanted. He upgraded himself and became leader of the party as Main wanted. And he got enough money to send Lucy to the moon as she always dreamed. The saddest part is that his mom and Main couldn't see him achieve those things and that he himself couldn't be there to see Lucy's dream come true... He's a legend!
I saw a comment from another reaction that honestly just makes my cry even more which said: Doc told David that after the last immuno blocker that was it and there was no going back then, but even after that Lucy was able to bring David back for one last moment showing us she was David's true medicine. Also, we're told a lot of times how you are remembered in night city by how you die not how you live but we still see Lucy's memories of David when he was smiling and living.
What got me about that last scene was that there were tours. Kids playing on the moon. The whole thing was a tourist trap for rich folks. Meanwhile it took the death of all of her friends to send Lucy there for a short vacation.
It's been confirmed that there isn't plans for another season as this show is a standalone. But with the huge success of the show there is a decent chance we can get a different story set in the same city sometime in the future.
David has a drink named after him on the bar called the afterlife (those drinks are only for legends of nightcity) on the game. The description on his drink goes something like “ Aim high and go out with a bang “ damn..... RIP my boy David.
Truly became the legend. In Night city there is a club Afterlife, it's even shown in the show, the club where David snuck Rebecca in when they wouldn't let her in. Those who become Night city legends get a drink named after them there and if you go there in the game there is a "David Martinez" and ofc, since he disliked fizzy drinks, it's made with Nicola, a fizzy drink combined with alcohol. It was in the game before the Anime came out and the game setting is 1 year after the anime, so if you knew how the naming of the drinks comes about, it was a spoiler, showing he dies. I love how they made references in game about the anime ( you can also get David's jacket) and how anime is actually set in the same city (You can find every location form the anime in the game).
David was a really good MC, quite different from most MCs in anime that follow their own dreams. In episode 2 when Lucy told him he should follow his own dreams, I thought he would, but he's like nah there's nothing wrong about having your dream be fulfilling the dream of the people you care about. I hope Roshi steams CP77 someday. You can get David's jacket there from a mission where you contact Falco, and Rebecca's gun can be looted right around the same place she died.
The sad thing about Cyberpsychosis is the fact that it doesn't *only* happen because of your cyberware or modifications. It really only comes about when you start to loose your empathy and humanity. As in: as soon as you've stopped caring about what you've been doing or stopped being a good person. By that point the cybernetics take over and turn you into what you've really become. A monster. A robotic killing machine.
You're right. So much of this could've been prevented if any one character did SOMETHING different. This was a Shakespearean tragedy set in the 2070's. Beautiful, but tragic.
Its been almost a year and Im sure someones point this out already but. Adams line of "You could prove an interesting construct" Is a reference to the technology of uploading a persons mind into an engram essentially turning them into data. This does kill the person but a version of them will live on.
Man.. still can't forget this last episode having a watch party with my friends and we were all f'kin crying fr. I've played the game and known what Night City is, still f'kin cried the hell up like in the game.

I look at it this way, Rebecca died knowing this: David is back, he's acting sane again even though he's out of meds, he saved Lucy, and we're all about to get away. With what was about to happen to David, sadly, I think dying was the kindest thing for our girl 'Becca. Died defending her friends, standing her ground against the boogeyman of legend, and didn't have to witness what followed.
For those who doesnt know this, when Smasher said "You could prove an interesting construct" he was pertaining to Relic. The one with Johnny Silverhand thing on V's head. That's the construct he was mentioning. He like David to be preserved.
I recommend to check the video which the ending song plays,it's called let you down and tells a little story about the netrunner who worked from maine before kiwi and lucy.
I never noticed much until the second watch how much Rebecca actually cares for David, love that you can find her gun in the game where she died in Corpo plaza
Yeah, love this show. I love everything about it and I think we need more shows that demonstrate, in painful fashion, how alienating and dehumanizing capitalism is. The greed of the corps created this world that kills dreams and meaningful connection, that eats life and love, that kills a child’s mother and then gouges the kid for extra cash. We’re closer than anyone wants to admit. And we don’t even have sick-ass robot arms, hot cyber-people, and braindances to distract us. We’re kinda fucked.
You know what sucks about this ending besides knowing it all could've been avoided for David? HE WAS A STRAIGHT A STUDENT! THE SHOW SAYS AS MUCH. All he had to do was do what he was told to do. His mother would've picked him up at a totally different time, completely avoiding the gang fight that resulted in the crash. Uuuuuughghhhh, David was NOT a victim of circumstance, he was a victim of his own choices. So many things he could've chose NOT to do but did anyway, not because he had to, but because he simply wanted to.

This ending shattered me. Gave me that empty feeling where I couldn’t think of anything else for a few days after watching it. _I Really Want to Stay at Your House_ still gets to me every time I hear it.
It's the unfortunateness of living in Night City. Everyone is a victim of the system one way or another. Mike Pondsmith said, "Cyberpunk is not about saving the world. It's about saving yourself." For the Edgerunners, they couldn't save themselves, not without sacrifices.

This show came out of nowhere and went so hard for no reason. This really was emotional and the song at the end didn't make it easier. Studio Trigger did an amazing job. This show was so special and is definitely one of my favorites!

doubtful. Adam Smasher literally never tried during this fight. He was utterly casual in obliterating everyone with pretty much no difficulty, David never had a chance, saving Lucy and Falco was pretty much the best case scenario.

While I know that Lucy bringing David back from cyberpsychosis might seem like a typical power of love copout, it actually adds to the tragedy surrounding Night City. Canonically, the most effective treatment for cyberpsychosis is just...a therapy session. But it costs way too much, so the people who need that treatment can't get access to it.
Fun fact : David didnt smash Rebecca so Adam said " fine, I'll do it my self..... RAAHHHHH"

crazy how this beutiful ending was predicted 3 episodes ago and in the opening with david dying and with the ending song with the show apologizing dam this show was peak
David is a fantastic protagonist in that it is incredibly difficult to pinpoint where the line between environmental factors and personal factors that effected his fate actually is. On one hand Night City is incredibly unforgiving, his mother's death frivolous and random, and life is treated as incredibly cheap. On the other hand you have someone who enjoys the feelings of being strong, who is constantly shown to be impatient, and who definitely has a self-destructive streak.
He is also one of the few protagonists that doesn't have some lofty dream and in fact only reaches a sense of satisfaction when trying to fulfill someone's else's.
Fun thing to know is that in the original TTRPG Cyberpunk came from your resistance to cyberpsychosis is based on your Empathy. The one thing that made David special was his above average empathy for other people, plus explains why the “power of love” can help manage the effects.
Favourite theory about cyberpsychosis is that it’s actually a coverup for the mental breakdowns that people keep having due to the stress of living in Night City. When a normal person snaps they can end up committing crimes of passion that they later regret, now apply that same idea to someone who has implants designed to give them super strength, super speed, and super reflexes, or even just anyone with access to the dozens of weapons that litter the streets.
Another thing to note is that in the opening, the silhouette shooting David has a bunch of building in it. Alluding to the fact that David's death wasn't because of one singular person, but the city itself. David got killed because of the fcked up city he lived in.
With Edgerunners and Arcane it has been an absolute amazing time for anime this year.

This show is the epitome of Johnny's word "For folks like us? Wrong city, wrong people". There is no happy ending, no closure, just the bittersweet depressed feeling that the song "I Really Want to Stay at Your House" leaves you everytime you hear it.
David never really had any goals or dreams from the beginning and so he decided to make others dreams come true. He made it to the top of Arasaka tower as his mother wanted. He upgraded himself and became leader of the party as Main wanted. And he got enough money to send Lucy to the moon as she always dreamed. The saddest part is that his mom and Main couldn't see him achieve those things and that he himself couldn't be there to see Lucy's dream come true...
He's a legend!

I saw a comment from another reaction that honestly just makes my cry even more which said:
Doc told David that after the last immuno blocker that was it and there was no going back then, but even after that Lucy was able to bring David back for one last moment showing us she was David's true medicine.
Also, we're told a lot of times how you are remembered in night city by how you die not how you live but we still see Lucy's memories of David when he was smiling and living.
What got me about that last scene was that there were tours. Kids playing on the moon. The whole thing was a tourist trap for rich folks. Meanwhile it took the death of all of her friends to send Lucy there for a short vacation.
It's been confirmed that there isn't plans for another season as this show is a standalone. But with the huge success of the show there is a decent chance we can get a different story set in the same city sometime in the future.

David has a drink named after him on the bar called the afterlife (those drinks are only for legends of nightcity) on the game. The description on his drink goes something like “ Aim high and go out with a bang “ damn..... RIP my boy David.

Came to love David and cry over his death in the span of 10 episodes. What an epic character.
Truly became the legend. In Night city there is a club Afterlife, it's even shown in the show, the club where David snuck Rebecca in when they wouldn't let her in. Those who become Night city legends get a drink named after them there and if you go there in the game there is a "David Martinez" and ofc, since he disliked fizzy drinks, it's made with Nicola, a fizzy drink combined with alcohol. It was in the game before the Anime came out and the game setting is 1 year after the anime, so if you knew how the naming of the drinks comes about, it was a spoiler, showing he dies. I love how they made references in game about the anime ( you can also get David's jacket) and how anime is actually set in the same city (You can find every location form the anime in the game).
David was a really good MC, quite different from most MCs in anime that follow their own dreams. In episode 2 when Lucy told him he should follow his own dreams, I thought he would, but he's like nah there's nothing wrong about having your dream be fulfilling the dream of the people you care about. I hope Roshi steams CP77 someday. You can get David's jacket there from a mission where you contact Falco, and Rebecca's gun can be looted right around the same place she died.

The sad thing about Cyberpsychosis is the fact that it doesn't *only* happen because of your cyberware or modifications. It really only comes about when you start to loose your empathy and humanity.
As in: as soon as you've stopped caring about what you've been doing or stopped being a good person. By that point the cybernetics take over and turn you into what you've really become. A monster. A robotic killing machine.

You're right. So much of this could've been prevented if any one character did SOMETHING different. This was a Shakespearean tragedy set in the 2070's. Beautiful, but tragic.
The broken PS4 cyberpunk 2077 had crazy car physics so this anime adaptation is lore accurate
Its been almost a year and Im sure someones point this out already but. Adams line of "You could prove an interesting construct" Is a reference to the technology of uploading a persons mind into an engram essentially turning them into data. This does kill the person but a version of them will live on.

I look at it this way, Rebecca died knowing this:
David is back, he's acting sane again even though he's out of meds, he saved Lucy, and we're all about to get away. With what was about to happen to David, sadly, I think dying was the kindest thing for our girl 'Becca. Died defending her friends, standing her ground against the boogeyman of legend, and didn't have to witness what followed.
I'd like to think she kicked David's ass in the afterlife for getting flatlined and then gave him a big hug.

For those who doesnt know this, when Smasher said "You could prove an interesting construct" he was pertaining to Relic. The one with Johnny Silverhand thing on V's head. That's the construct he was mentioning. He like David to be preserved.

Yeah, love this show. I love everything about it and I think we need more shows that demonstrate, in painful fashion, how alienating and dehumanizing capitalism is. The greed of the corps created this world that kills dreams and meaningful connection, that eats life and love, that kills a child’s mother and then gouges the kid for extra cash.
We’re closer than anyone wants to admit. And we don’t even have sick-ass robot arms, hot cyber-people, and braindances to distract us. We’re kinda fucked.
Hopefully the sun exlplodes before the world goes full dystopia.
You know what sucks about this ending besides knowing it all could've been avoided for David? HE WAS A STRAIGHT A STUDENT! THE SHOW SAYS AS MUCH. All he had to do was do what he was told to do. His mother would've picked him up at a totally different time, completely avoiding the gang fight that resulted in the crash. Uuuuuughghhhh, David was NOT a victim of circumstance, he was a victim of his own choices. So many things he could've chose NOT to do but did anyway, not because he had to, but because he simply wanted to.
When Adam said " you would make an interesting construct " it's something arasaka does it copies a person's consciousness (their brain) so they aren't really dead they exist as an a.i unless they get put in a body it's pretty much what the games story is about

This ending shattered me. Gave me that empty feeling where I couldn’t think of anything else for a few days after watching it. _I Really Want to Stay at Your House_ still gets to me every time I hear it.
It's the unfortunateness of living in Night City. Everyone is a victim of the system one way or another. Mike Pondsmith said, "Cyberpunk is not about saving the world. It's about saving yourself." For the Edgerunners, they couldn't save themselves, not without sacrifices.
