The Ghost Engine, in my opinion, can now symbolically represent the original Thomas series, the literal spirit and soul of a franchise long forgotten and only told by people who’ve seen it.
It’s those people who need to keep this legendary part of the franchise alive and well, and make sure normies understand why the original series is so great.
ㄷㄷㄷㄷ
Thanks mate that genuinely makes me feel bad that from now on kids will only know Thomas with the new animated series and never discover the originals unless their lucky enough that their parents will introduce them to it
That is the most beautiful thing and couldn’t agree more
I think the ghost engine is Protus idk about anyone else though
@@Jdbb35 I think so too.
When I was a kid, I was traumatized by the chilling sight of the ghost engine and Duncan's silhouettes across the old iron bridge. The atmosphere, nothing but lonely claustrophobic darkness among the bridge. The music is honestly too scary for Thomas the Tank Engine...yet it has this haunting beauty within it. The way the story of the ghost engine may be a myth or a possible tragedy. This specific episode was like the deepest darkest place in my heart that I never wanted to see again years hiding under the pillows at the sight of the moon, reoccurring nightmares of an engine falling, screaming in terror as it falls to the ravine. In fact the only reason I came to re-watching this episode over a decade later was to see If I could confront my lifelong fear of Duncan alone on the Old Iron Bridge. And I will say. It may not be as scary as I remember but I still found this episode; chilling, haunting and still hitting my nerves. I'm glad to have returned to the Old Iron Bridge once again. Hopefully the Little Engine reached the other side.

Definitely the one with probably the darkest tone in the classical series.
It’s one of those occasions where stories could be made without relying on the railway series books, and is just as good as the books.
So many dark episodes that made kids think. Thomas was never afraid to be scary or dark, well... was.

I can imagine the ghost engine story, but coming from the engine's driver's point of view.
Picture this scene: Just as Rusty has finished his story and Duncan leaves knowing it was fake. A homeless man appears in view and asks the driver for a quick word. The homeless man then explains that what Rusty had told Duncan that the story wasn't made up and that an engine did plummet into the ravine. The Homeless Man was the driver of that engine and after the incident, he was never the same again.
So then, knowing that this is an actual ghost story about an actual dead train, Duncan's driver and fireman still decide to screw with him by throwing a brick over the side and spooking him...

This episode scared me so much when I was younger, it's not even funny. I remember watching Thomas on PBS Sprout on Demand as a toddler and they had this thing where they would play three episodes at once. So one time at night time I watched Lady Hatt's Birthday Party, Sir Topham Hatt's Holiday, and Duncan Gets Spooked. And the last episode scared me so much because I was alone watching it in the dark.

I feel so sad and sorry for the unknown little engine that never makes it to the other side of the old iron bridge and has to spend an eternity trying. Lost but never forgotten.
This music fits this episode so well, it frightens me.
I think I read this was based off a true story, but I could be wrong.
Yeah I've heard of something about that too. As the story goes, Some time in Dartmoor, when a train plummeted off a bridge into a marshland along with it's crew and have remained buried in the marshy grave for over 50 years before recovery, yet there has been no record of it's occurrence. Then again whose to say it never happened.
+Richard Lindao There are many stories of ghost trains, and they're mostly legend.
But, when I was little, I lived in Pennsylvania, and I lived on a mountain range. Every night I could hear a whistle far in the mountains, even though there had never been and railroad tracks up there. But, to this day, I still wonder... what made that sound, and does it still make it? It is a cold night tonight... could there be a lost engine up there?
+The Dragon Lord I live in Southwest Pennsylvania, and I heard a story about a small Tank Engine that worked on a Railway half an hour from where I live. It's said that one day, it crashed trough a set of buffers, down a hill and into a building. The engine was badly damaged and the crew was very seriously injured. After a 2 year overhaul, the safety valve (I think) burst, showering its crew with hot steam and burning them to death. This time, the engine wasn't repaired. It was left to rust in a siding. People have reported hearing the sounds of a Steam engine, even after the Railway closed down. They still occur to this day, and the engine still sits in the siding.
O_O Holy ballz....
What Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends lacked in quantity more than made up for in quality at that time. Here was a seemingly simple ghost story that was so well done visually and musically that we still talk about it to this day. Even as an adult I still get some chills with the story of the I'll rated engine and seeing that firefly train outline. Absolutely superb.
I feel sorry for that little engine that never made it to the other side. Very spooky music. The episode's music and story frightened me so much I never watched it when I was younger than 10. Nice recreation by the way!

Years later this song still manages to give me the chills
This episode sparked the greatest question in the entire show: If Rusty's ghost story was fake, how did the fireflies know to make the shape of an engine? They weren't in on the prank.
Proteus' spirit might still be with us after all . . .

Douglas 57647 no its not there is not a saddest darkest and scariest episode in the show
BTW the saddest episode was the sad story of Henry
@@xxx-nz8ps coal is more sadder
@@xxx-nz8ps Of the Model series, yes Sad story of Henry was the saddest. But before Mattel ruined everything, the saddest episode was a shed for Edward.
Here's my idea of how the ghost engine could work into something canon. My answer isn't a proven fact, it's just something fun I thought could work.
Behind the scenes the engine shown falling over the bridge was Skarloey's model used, and the fireflies were arranged into an engine of Rheneas' basis. The engine that fell could have been Prodeus since he's also a saddle tank like Skarloey. We only see the engine's silhouette so it doesn't necessarily have to be Skarloey's basis for certain, just a saddle tank of that general shape. I think Prodeus would work well because he's always been a mythical narrow gauge engine, he fits the description fairly well, and I don't think he's ever really been confirmed to have existed (except maybe that statue Peter Sam found that one time).
The fireflies could be referencing Smudger who was also the same basis as Rheneas and is confirmed to have existed (in the TV series canon). As far as we know Smudger was never saved from the Mid-Sodor railway, he stayed a generator and was left with the decaying buildings. Perhaps Smudger got so rusted out that he died? Maybe the fireflies saw Smudger and decided to mimic his shape in front of Duncan who is a similar shape?
Ohhh, that’s a pretty good way of looking at it!
Someone also made a Headcanon character called Fletcher, who supposedly was the one who fell off the Old Iron Bridge!
perhaps they did
you never know
Mike and Junior were genious' with how they combined beauty and horror.
This song is really what made Duncan Gets Spooked so memorable for me, it's such a brilliantly chilling tune, especially the whistle at the end. I like that it isn't a purely scary track like the theme from ghost train or haunted henry, with there being a sense of tragedy in there too, the whistle at the end almost feels like a cry for help, or maybe a warning.
The perfect music to tell scary stories when you’ve only got a fire to light your area and a heavy fog rolls in, you could almost feel a ghost touching your shoulder

At the smelters, all Percy could think about was Edward’s ghost engine.
Thomas knew Percy was scared, so he teased him even more.
“What’s that up there?” Thomas squeaked. “Is it a spook?”
“It’s just a piece of twisted scarp.” Percy said nervously. “Isn’t it?”
