Cops hacked “bulletproof” gangster phone system called GHOST 🧨

- Опубликовано: 29 сен 2024
- A supposedly secure encrypted communications system used by criminals, called Ghost, was hacked by an international police taskforce, letting investigators eavesdrop on a thousand messages a day over six months and trapping narcos, mafiosi, outlaw bikers, gangsters, and hitmen. Let me tell you about it.
The Mob Reporter here with news that real-life Ghostbusters in nine countries pulled a sneaky switcheroo, a digital infiltration allowing cops to secretly intercept, retrieve, read, and trace secret messages on a special secure communications platform. A 32-year-old man in Sydney, Australia, with no criminal record was the alleged creator and administrator of Ghost. He is identified as Jay Je Yoon Jung. Police called him a “computer geek.” Ghost became a popular haunt for several thousand underworld figures. It bragged of “bulletproof security” and “military-grade encryption” and claimed intense privacy and securitywith features like end-to-end encrypted calling, self-destructing messages, a purge function and, importantly, tamper-proof servers.
A joint taskforce was formed by Europol in March 2022, called Operational Taskforce Next, led by America’s FBI and France’s Gendarmerie.
Ghost’s servers were in France and Iceland. Finances went through the United States. Users were in Sweden, France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, the Netherlands, Australia and elsewhere.
Australian Federal Police called their part of the probe Operation Kraken and arrested mobsters, gangsters, narcos, and outlaw bikers, including members of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, the Mongols Motorcycle Club, Comanchero Motorcycle Club, and the Finks Motorcycle Club.
A Mafia fugitive in Italy, named Giovanni Parlangeli, was found and arrested because of the Ghost app. He was an important member of the Sacra Corona Unita, one of Italy’s powerful Mafia groups.
In Ireland, police said they identified four serious organized crime groups using Ghost That includes a group known as “The Family” that has outpaced the notorious Kinahan cartel at the top of the food chain in Dublin.
There have been several popular systems that have ended badly for them: Phantom Secure, Sky ECC, EncroChat, and AN0M. They all had cool names and big promises.
The landscape of underworld encrypted comms has shifted and fragmented as these busts keep coming. Uncertainty among users has broken the monopolies the big platforms had.

@@Lipi19821 Moxy been arrested? For what? When? Where?
Telegram is not the same as signal.
Excuse my ignorance, but can someone explain why the creator of the encrypted phone was arrested? Was it just because he should have reasonably known it would be used almost exclusively for criminal activity? If someone can explain, I’d appreciate it.
I'm asking the same thing. It isn't really fair to him to be charged with the crap others did. Mark Zukerberg and other aren't charged for the stuff their users do on their platform...it's just unfair
@danielbaldwin3980 The Feds, tend to approach the company owner and ask for their compliance, unless they suspect they are also committing a crime. In a lot of countries, refusal to cooperate is a crime. Operating a server, you know to contain crimes, or contains evidence of, makes you complicit of the crime.
Its Australia you probably need a license to create an app
His charges are:
1 count supporting criminal organisation (administrating the ghost network)
1 count dealing with suspected proceeds of indictable offence
1 count dealing in identifying information using it to commit fraud
1 count obtaining information using a carriage service with intent
1 count contravening a requirement in section 3LA (refusing to unlock device(s) after being served with a data access order)
Since he apparently had access to all the messages across the ghost network, from a law enforcement perspective he should have known very well what it was being used for.
The last charge (3LA) carries the heaviest maximum penalty of 10 years, so I guess you could say his worst offence of all was not handing over his passwords to the police.

Why not just flash and an android phone with Calyx or GrapheneOS or something commonly used, use something like Signal, and route all traffic over Tor (or not route over tor, depends what ya need). I'm on the other side of these guys (well, not these guys in particular, but different high value criminals, I'm a cyber threat analyst), and it always amazes me that these people will trust their freedom to something just because it makes bold claims and their buddy uses it. Like, your freedom is on the line, spend a few weeks learning the basics at least. It's hubris and laziness though. They think they know and doing research is boring, so they go to prison instead. I had an argument with a mate about Blackberry's years ago when he said they were safe because their servers were in Canada. My point was, and remains that all of these 'safe' phones go through the exact sane network that all phones use. In the UK we have GCHQ, our governments spy home, something like the NSA in the US that listen into everything they want to. If they can listen to the Russians, Iranians or any other nations spies, what chance do you think the average crime lord has in keeping their comms safe? The nazis found out in the 1940s that if a security service wants to break your security, they will. It's just a matter of time. If you think you're safe then you're wrong.
Why they don't just hide on standard phones amongst the other billions of users is beyond me, stick to the rules of never trusting anything to keep your secrets safe and you'll have more success than paying for a service that's going to get targeted because it's only use is for criminality. It's obviously going to get targeted by the law enforcement agencies.
Blend in with the normies. What do I know, though?
@@Dwigt_Rortugal exactly.
or just use Signal and relax knowing you're secure.
@@NZambergrislol
@@Astroqualia lol?.. you're obviously not very familiar with Signal, you should do some research and you'll understand soon enough how its undeniably secure & why its the only comms app Edward Snowdon recommends... seriously, its well documented how the FBI and suchlike have forced Signal in court cases to give up all info & comms on a suspect and ( unlike virtually all other 'secure' encrypted apps that have to then hand over the encryption keys & all your info / comms) the ONLY thing Signal can possibly give them is the last time a user logged on to the service - and thats IF you're 'just' using the default settings.
I mean this with only good inttent but go and educate your.self and start using Signal - its legal & free and open source , and its our right to be able to communicate freely & privately, so why not?
Im guessing the ones that haven't bren compromised aren't shown so you/we don't about them.
Good work
The best crime reporter in the business drops another top quality crime video on surprise, surprise- encrypted phones that self incriminate the perps. They should be called incriminate yourself phones. Criminals here’s a pro tip- you are better off using what’s app or privacy focused email servers like proton mail. Of course it’s better to go old school and just don’t use phones at all. If 50 plus years of tapping phones and busting people on numerous occasions doesn’t scare you away from phones then the revelations of the immense capabilities the NSA has definitely should.
WhatsApp has no problem giving up information to local police agencies, not to mention there's likely many backdoors even the police have access to at this point.
Hacking a hacker. Duh. Go figure. Nothing is for sure on any level on any platform. Cash is king trust no one. End of story. That’s what works for me.

So much money in drugs. Why don't we legalize and regulate? Organized crime would go down 90% overnight and the state would make a killing on tax.
The problem is that we don't want a Kensington (Philadelphia) or Skid Row in every town. Many people can't control themselves and would use them all day every day if they would be even more accessible.
Not to mention drgged pregnancies and drg babies.
Follow the money as they say
@@istvanbocsor7911there already is a skid row/drug epidemic in every major city in north america. Keeping drugs illegal doesnt prevent people from obtaining or using them. If drugs were legalized deaths would drop as the drugs quality wouldnt be tainted with garbage like fentanyl. Prohibition of alcohol was reversed for a reason. People want it and the criminals profit from its sale. The government knows this but doesnt want to loose all the money made from prosecuting dealers.
