  • I've been seeing a lot of videos lately about assigning yourself personal projects or taking on "personal assignments", so I thought I would cover a legend that did that extremely well. This is street smarts volume 8: Bruce Davidson.

Thanks for putting together this video. Very inspiring. I normally shoot motorsport (drift) and often find myself in the pit garages , sometimes getting shots of cars or drivers. I'm introverted, like most photographers, but try to talk to drivers and learn more about their world. I've been contemplating putting together a long term project on these people, and feel the need to develop trust and openness about what I'm doing there. This video clarified this thought process and has really got me serious about diving into this type of project. I first came across Bruce Davidson's work with the Circus set and dreamed of doing something similar. Thanks again. Keep shooting.

Awesome response and glad to hear you got that much out of the video. It sounds like the perfect type of Bruce project considering it would be within reach for others, but I don’t think I’ve really seen that subject covered. I’m from Detroit and have so many friends and family in automotive that I can really imagine the appeal of your project. Good luck with it!

Great video! You can see the decisive moment in each photo. A big difference between IG photos that make a big bigger deal about blurry backgrounds and gear. This is a great artist at work.

True. These are all good examples of how your aperture doesn’t have to be wide open 100% of the time.

Great video. Bruce Davidson is definitely one of my favorites. I've been trying to be more intentional with projects as well...instead of aimlessly wandering all the time.

He’s awesome. I’m glad I did this video, because I didn’t know about his work other than Subway before. Projects seem to make all the difference once you’ve gotten your skills up (obviously, you have). I hope the self assignment thing will continue to catch on. It would really make a lot of already great photographers stand out more.

I own this book and Love the colours Kodachrome and Vibe of 80s Subway NYC that we don't see nowadays anymore. Love people of 80s interaction unlike now people always Addict on their stupid smartphones...

Completely agree with you on that. All of the technical achievements of the last 20-30 years have really come at a cost to some of our humanity.
