  • In this video I replace the gear oil in the transfer case and rear differential of a 22 Toyota rav 4 awd.
    I attribute my successes to god and give him the glory.
    “Repent, then, and turn to god, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the lord,” (Acts 3:19)

    I have a 2021 rav4 Prime which is a plug-hybrid. The transmission , and differential both uses the same ATF-WS oil. $13.50- $18 per qrt.

    Well done sir.
    Sticking it to the correct oil is tha way. Some cars can have LX in the rear and LT in the front. A bunch of cans after the job lol.
    Idk if Toyota USA inforce some kind a rule against ppl changing their own oil to dealerships over there but that abrupt response and the tone delivered to the lady was very rude and it is against costumer service training. A very easy way to not retain costumers after selling a car too. (stat that every Toyota dealership has to fight for but maybe things has changed).
    The washer thingy? I remember being the rounded/squash part towards the differential but the rear one was inverted in ur Rav4.
    Tin foil on.
    Thanks for the video💝

    Thanks for this. In my little experience doing this to a couple of trucks I've owned, I believe they put the fill plug on the side like that and you would fill until it starts to spill out. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  4 месяца назад

      That’s usually the process. Ive seen some that don’t fill to the bottom of the hole but on this vehicle you will fill until it just runs out.

    I have the same 22 that we bought new. Only 14k so far. The dealers are interesting to deal with here in southern NH. They like to think that everything is proprietary to Toyota and they hate people doing stuff themselves. My 2018 Tacoma called the same fluid I used 75w-90 synthetic Valvoline. I swear they purposely use hard to find fluids to deter people from doing stuff themselves. They tell you they give you free oil changes for the first one 25,000 miles but they refuse to change it every 5K so forget it I just do it myself. I’m pretty sure once I hit 30k I’m just gonna use a good quality full synthetic 75w-90. In the past, most Toyota differentials and transfer cases, you would just fill it till it runs out the fill plug. I wonder if the RAV is the same way could you tell if it was right at the threads that you put the fluid in?

      It is pretty much the same for this. The oil just started to trickle out the rear diff and transfer case when I had the fluid in. The one can was enough. I probably made it more troublesome measuring the fluid then was necessary but I wanted to make sure I would have enough with the one can. They did the free maintenance for 25k for us too but only changed the oil every 10k. I’ve been doing it every 5k since they stopped.

    Yours is a le awd? Bothe the diff and the transfer case take the same fluid?

    Was the one can that you purchase enough for both the transfer case and rear differential or you needed to purchase more? how much does it come in container ? I have a 2020 Rav4 XLE at 23k miles and I'm looking into doing this myself sometimes next year.

    I would have liked to see how you filled up the front gear oil. Since there's just about zero space to work with filling up the front transfer case is a little intimidating. Since the oil is so expensive, would have liked to see how you pumped it in. I have the same syringe and it's not very user friendly. Not much room to get the hose in place and pump the oil at the same time. The video was helpful though, thanks

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  2 месяца назад

      I had the front on a few blocks to get it up a few inches. The syringe I have has a hose that attaches to the tip and I just put the hose in the fill hole. It went just like the rear and not much hassle. I think having it up a bit helped. It takes a lot of effort to pump it in so I put the plunger on the ground and pushed the syringe down. There are other designs but I found this one was the cleanest and easiest to measure out the oil.

      @@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic Thanks for your reply.
      I purchased the same plunger and the hose was too small and impossible to move the fluid. I bought a much bigger hose and it was fine.
      The reason I wanted to see you put the oil in is I couldn’t get my car jack to raise the car high enough to even have access to the gear box. I ended up going over to my son in laws and he was able to jack it higher so I had access to it. Your video made it look easier than was my experience. I also needed him to pump the oil in while I held the hose in the refill hole.
      Also, I’m surprised that you didn’t recommend Valvolines gear oil which is about $16 a quart. Toyotas price is insane. I’m a stickler for following to the T Toyotas recommendation for oil and that’s why I bought the expensive stuff. I did get a liter on eBay for $40. After researching I realized the Valvoline oil is just as good as the expensive Toyota oil.
      Your video was very helpful. I liked that you were not afraid to give God the glory on your comments.
      Thanks for sharing your video.

    I called my local Toyota Dealer for a quote on my 2019 Rav4 Adventure (Torque Vectoring) just out of curiosity: $400 for rear diff, $300 for transfer case. OMG, are they freaking kidding!!! I'm doing both for about $100 plus I'll have washers and the syringe for the next change. Thanks for the video. Just FYI, back in next time and use the slope to level your vehicle.

    I think they also use lighter weight oils to try to maximize fuel efficiency, but I don’t think it’ll matter in the end. I’m a little concerned about the whole Warranty thing, but whatever I guess. have you thought about the transmission fluid yet? The dealers will probably refuse to touch that too. I was finally able to find an OBD two adapter and an app on my phone that could read my transmission temperature so I could change the fluid on my Tacoma. I’ll probably use the same thing on the RAV4, the dealers like to say that they are lifetime filled. It’s a pain, but it is doable. If I was to do all over again, I probably would’ve bought a Ford. We have a fantastic Ford dealership that has been great to deal with for service and everything after my Tacoma got flooded. I bought an F150 and I just had the dealer do my transmission flushes because it’s very reasonable. Think my F150 took like 14 quarts of atf and they did the flush for like 275

      This rav 4 has a 60k mile fluid change interval. I believe you just drain and fill it, but I haven’t looking into it too much. I just got a launch creader elite for Toyota on a Black Friday sale. It’s updatable for life and was about 120 dollars. I haven’t hooked it up and checked it out yet but it is supposed to have a bunch of resets and functions for Toyota in it. My snapon modis only goes to 15 so I thought this was a good deal and it’s good to 2023. I’m not a fan of the lifetime transmission fill, I can’t imagine they have a fluid that will last a lifetime. I think as long as you don’t have any transmission fluid leaks you can just measure the fluid that comes out and put that much back in.

    • @IHcubcadet
      @IHcubcadet 7 месяцев назад

      @@JasonTheMunicipalMechanic yeah I think you’re right draining and refilling could be the easiest way to do it. I know on the Tacoma there were some that came over from the factory but I haven’t heard of that on the RAV4. I believe the other way to do it is to drain it and then purposely overfill it by about half a quart then run it until it comes up to a certain temperature then remove the so-called check plug and let the fluid drain out until it goes to steady drip then put it back in and then you’re all set.

      @IHcubcadet that’s an interesting way to do it. I wish they would just put a dipstick on them like they used to. I think bmw took the dipstick away for the engine oil on some models.

    I wonder if Toyota is having supply issues getting the gear oil. That could explain why they refused to sell you the oil. During the UAW strike there were reports of domestic dealers hoarding parts and refusing to sell certain items over the counter.

    • @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic
      @JasonTheMunicipalMechanic  7 месяцев назад +2

      That might have been it. I’m not sure my wife went to pick it up and they didn’t really give a specific reason to not selling it they just said they wouldn’t sell it to us, we would have to get the service there.

    • @bobbywin9303

      You can get Valvoline for $16 and the pouch enables you to put the oil in without purchasing the syringe. The Valvoline will do the same job only a lot cheaper.

    I did find this guy who is a master Toyota diagnostic tech who basically said the Amsoil 75-90 would be fine. It’s still GL-5. It’s just a little thicker and you’d lose a fraction of an MPG. I’ve found some others have also used Redline 75-85.

      I put in exactly what the owners manual says to put in. On page 665-666 for rear differential and transfer case. (dynamic torque control) use Toyota genuine differential gear oil LX 75w-85 gl-5 or equivalent
      For (dynamic torque vectoring awd vechicle) use Toyota genuine differential gear oil LX. The transfer case specifies the same oil for the same awd system. This is right from the owners manual.
