I had one for over ten years. Best vehicle I ever owned until the underside just corroded beyond repair. I took the rear seats out as well & converted it into a mobile printing station for my equestrian event photography business with display screens at the back and all powered by 5 x 110Ah batteries and a 2kw inverter. It was a good earner and paid for itself over & over. Good luck with it, it's a lovely drive...

Oh man, love it! They came onto my radar when I was up in Svaneti in Georgia. I quickly noticed that every local taxi and car crawling around having a reliable go of things was a Delica. They ran laps around the rest of us, and even the Subari I was in seemed outclassed on the back roads. Sounds like a perfect fit for you and your needs! What a fun beast!

Excellent choice of van Tom! We've had a couple of these over the years here in NZ and they are great for adventuring. Our current one (1995 2.8L Diesel Manual Space Gear Green Field) is kitted out with a bar up front, bigger tires, snorkel, and a full tray roof rack. Can take it anywhere, and perfect for the sketchy ski-field access roads we have here!

I absolutely get why you bought the Delica, the old Japanese people carriers are rock solid and were well ahead of their time when they were made.
I bought a 3 litre petrol auto Toyota Alphard in 2016 to use as a camper, I never converted it but the back seats turned into a massive bed and I had some great sleeps in it. The engine was a Lexus RX300, factory fitted by Toyota, absolutely beautiful, nearly silent and pulled like a train, not bad considering mine was also a 2002 model.
I had it for 18 month and every time I drove it it felt like a special occasion. I came out of work and sold it, I won't lie, I got less than half what I paid for it.....3 grand, and paid 7 for it as an import.
Best vehicle I ever owned, not cheap to run, averaged about 25 to the gallon, but I still feel priveledged to have owned it.
The Japanese were and probably still are, the masters of this type of vehicle, you made a brave but smart choice, just as it turned out for me. You'll love this van, you've made a very informed move buying it, it's a bit daunting what with importing, the age of the vehicle, getting insurance etc.
The fuel bills will eventually become a massive reality to you, however, everything else outweighs that.....just enjoy the sheer enjoyment of owning it and the pleasure of driving it.

Fold the middle and back row down and you've got a bed. Battery powered LED lights and the usual camping stuff are much more flexible and take up much less space than a kitchen conversion. I'd have gone for a land cruiser but I still like your van. Appreciate in value, low box, diff lock and will go on for 500k plus miles with regular oil changes. Also regarding making a bed and units...buy 2nd hand worn out aluminium ladders, drill out the rivets and you have very sturdy weight bearing aluminium beams which you can cut to length with a mitre saw from screwfix with the correct blade. Drill your new holes and re rivet your frames the plywood over the top. Beam lengths will cost a fortune if bought raw.

Thomas you might want to check what fuel your engine prefers if you haven't already. Mine takes 99ron unless I get it mapped for UK fuels. Thomas is not 'yet' thinking about the BIG picture where it concerns the beauty of nature, AND conserving it. Give him time, that will come. Meanwhile, kudos that he is recording it's beauty. Little steps. 😊

I drove a Delica for 2 Months in Australia. Was a Charme! Slick profile, perfectly big enough for one or two people, absolutely Offroad capable (traveled right after wet season and had to cross quite a couple of rivers, had never a problem!). Love that car and having an automatic for Australias long, straight roads definitely is a plus.

Hi Tom i own a Delica too here in Australia & they are a great van. I'm amazed what you've done with it & level of detail. Well done! You've given me some inspirational thoughts! Cheers.

So cool! I just bought my dream 4x4 sprinter this week as well so I can watch your build out as I work on mine too! I think for the way an outdoor photographer adventurer wants to use these 4x4 is a must.

    Just a campers tip
Regarding the battery pack, fully depleting the battery is ill advised. Try to not deplete more than 50%. So in effect, 100 watts will be 12 hours.
Also, the wattage draw of a kettle or sandwich maker is important. Just be sure the battery pack’s inverter can consistently supply the required watts, not just the capable surge wattage. Eg. Some inverters will say they can supply 2000w but that could be the a surge value (turning an appliance on) but the real supply wattage can be much much less, sometimes half.
You can get your mechanic to install a regulator switch under the bonnet and cabling from the switch to inside the van, which allows the alternator to charge the battery pack while you drive the van. No need for solar.
The switch is automatic so no fuss. The switch knows when the main vehicle battery is fully charged, then switches to charge the battery pack. It’s a constant process.
    Food for thought anyway. 👌

4x4 tip - a set of Maxtracks would be a good addition to you van just in case . They can help you get out of situations when just 4x4 won't do. Perfect for snow or mud.

Excellent choice for the UK, small and not too high for the dreaded parking barriers. A simple awning and a bright reverse "light (change the bulb to LED) and camera" are some considerations to keep in mind. The camera could end up on B-Roll filler!

Thomas, I'm behind on my RUclips subscriptions, but I just got to this video today, and I was quite excited to watch because I've been curious about this van! Congrats, and I'm looking forward to watching you build the interior and put it to use!

great stuff tom, you look really chuffed!!!! i imported a vehicle a few years back too, quite a similair story - and the single best thing i did to it (apart from installing a bed, cooker, safe, etc) was to pay for an LPG conversion for the fuel. more than paid for itself in the first year, with the fuel cost savings. plus the added benefit of a full LPG tank and full petrol tank meant no worries being stranded worrying about re-fueling. no doubt you've already got your own ideas anyway

Congratulations! This is so much fun :) In so many occasions you see people investing tons of money into 4x4 vehicles, while you (and the) know it will never see anything else than tarmac. Not in this case - if anyone makes 4x4 into good use, it's you. Looking forward to your adventures with the Delica!

I'm jealous Thomas, definitely the sort of thing any photographer would want and I definitely understand the wish for better driveability in the snow/ice. At the moment I'm either B&B's or camping but would love something like this when I can retire - hopefully in a few years! Enjoy!

I love the earlier shape of these with the front axle set back, Chamonix on the side is one of my favourite places to visit as well.
I've got a Volvo xc70 for camping it's just that bit more capable with addition of a roof top tent

Your new ride looks fun! I know what you mean about the vehicles you want as you grow older. Just this week I bought a 2002 Ford F150 "flare side" that has all the options and a few add-ons that make it unique. It only has 57000 miles on it. I'm looking at tents that fit in the bed and an air mattress for camping. I live in Texas, so cold weather can be mostly avoided.

Hi there I was a Delica owner for 3 years. I had a 25yr old diesel very capable 4x4 used it every day. Watch when in 2wd the tail can come out. I have been off road in UK with LowRange adventures. There is a FB Delica owners club with great advice. Will wait to see what you do next. Moving to NZ where the Delica is still going strong. You'll love it 👍
