smithers that fluff he is using to insulate the back wall= dirt. Or rather what dirt is made up of in that forest. Dead dry pine needles don't degrade well. It's not that densely packed. It can smolder pulling oxygen from above and between the surrounding fluff. It doesn't necessarily "burn" so much as smolder. Hope that's helpful? I may be too stoned to explain well. I live in Washington state. A lot of our forests have this same "flooring".
@@@smithers4420 it ain't a fire like we are use to above the surface. A fire below ground works a little different. It is not exactly a fire. If you burn paper but you put put tge flame itself, you will see the rest of the paper still slowly burns away. This hot, glowing line that slowly eats up the paper. The same thing happens under ground. And there is oxygen underground. But as things are burning like that hot line on a paper it does not uses that many of it. Oxygen is also stored in the soil and in plants and roots of trees. and if there are lots of holes in the ground like fox and rabbit holes it pulls even more oxygen. There is this abandoned village in America where they by accident lighted up the coals underground underneath the village. This happened many years ago yet the coals are still burning ;) You should look it up it is very interesting

Like every year find a nice area, create a shelter, and all season long just return to spend the night, make something new and improve it. Maybe bring friends and expand it. Like you could create your own little hut just for fun for a whole year
Bert Kriescher brought me to this channel. Joe you are F'ing insane, this personal-view survival content is unmatched to Les or Alone. I'm sitting cozy in my warn bed with a cold glass of tequila and I've never been happier. I know this video is 6 years old and nobody is going to read this my comment :) I just had to type my feelings
Did a couple of nights of winter survival training in Ely, Mn. for Army aviators. We stayed in snow shelters with snow filled parachute silk for door plugs. It was blowing and twenty below outside but nice and comfy inside just using a candle for heat. Our military issue goose down sleeping bags were rated for minus forty so that was a big help. Would love to go out and do it again. One warning about booze and cold, the alcohol in a bottle can potentially get cold enough to freeze your throat and even though alcohol initially makes you feel warmer the long term effect will rob you of your body heat.
Tom we were a sister unit to the 501st Airborne Infantry Regiment in Anchorage. Did the training in the early eighties in the event we may have to go up to Alaska to cover for the 501st. Went to anchorage for a couple of weeks in June one summer I'll never forget the swarms of mosquitoes that would cover our UH-1H's when we stopped in an LZ for some local orientation. Surprised I got out of there with any blood left in my body.
Omg me too, I would have to have someone with me, like if I was alone and heard a crunch on the leaves my brain would give me all the adrenaline it had lol
I'm only getting into these survival type videos cause of the coronavirus, even if we make it through with no riots, it just proves how fragile society is. I'll need a plan b. Gotta be able to turn yukon on a moments notice.
Be careful building a fire on wet rocks. One time I had a rock blow up from steam pressure/expansion and I was picking pieces out of my arms and neck for hours. If you think a piece of sawdust hurts wait till you get a rock chip going 50 mph stuck in it. Nice job on everything else. Just don't want you going blind.
nizzeeeee If the rocks have any internal moisture the water will build pressure and explode, like a volcano. A rock from a sauna is dry and water is ladled over the surface of the hot, dry, rock thus producing steam. If you soaked a semi porous rock and then heated it sufficiently your one in a million chance turns into a guaranteed recipe for disaster.
DO go camping. DON'T expect to get it exactly right the first, second, or even third time! It's a process and even if you're tied to a desk most of the time, you can think things over and make some notes to make the NEXT time even better. Now, get out there and DO IT!
The fist time I'm seeing this fun guy. Actually It's fun and cool to watch this guy in the wilderness on his own, Also, it helps me fine-tune my hearing to understand spoken English by native speakers much more . Greetings from South America.
My parents knew this couple that got a really nice sculpted fire pit, made of river rock. I'm sure you can guess how that went. Amazingly enough no one got hurt. They had all stepped away from the fire for one reason or another before the explosion.
Clearly it's because river rocks are part-water, and the water wants to get out to extinguish the evil fire... this is good info to have, thanks, Lp Lp!
Great video, Joe. Here's a tip an old country doctor taught me for when you get something in your eye. Always carry some chewing gum and chew it up until it's soft and sticky. Press it to the matter in your eye and it will safely come right out.
I was raised in the back woods of Mississippi and I grew up preparing for "Y2K" LOL. But now as a adult, I realize that every thing that I learned coming up is very important for the time and place where we live. These are a knowledge that's dying with us older folk. We can survive any hurricane, ice/snow storm and coved 19. These ways of living on the land need to be past to our youngens. For our fathers deserve to be remembered for there knowledge they past down to us with out us realizing the true and fond memories they bring. Keep these videos coming brother!!
The one place that green wood is preferable is the fire reflector. For one live softwood you drastically reduce the likelihood of the reflector burning and get to use the boughs for your bed.
Pretty good but if you need to make a quick shelter use dirt just for the first night, also you shelter seemed quite easy for mobs to break into the last thing you want is to walk into a creeper waiting at your shelter.
Hey Joe, I saw you on “Alone”, I remember when you tried to scare the bear, that was really brave of you. When I watch your videos, really makes me want to do the same things as you! I’m really thankful for you, keep up the great work Joe, cheers!

5:53 the minute I heard him say "it's a bad feeling, eh" I knew he was canadian
That took you long. he already said "aboat" in the introduction.

Thank you, Joe for creating this whole library full of some great entertainment so that I willingly watch repeats. Some truly good educational tips to be had amongst your videos. I am revisiting these while you recover from your accident. Please rest up and recover. I know your beautiful family loves and needs you. I know you will listen to the rehab guys and girls so that you can get back out and do what you love. Greetings to your whole family.

Excellent bushcraft being aware and doing something about the fire threat. The roots of trees burning for years is true.
how does any oxygen get to the roots so they can burn?
smithers that fluff he is using to insulate the back wall= dirt.
This happened many years ago yet the coals are still burning ;)
You should look it up it is very interesting
Jordy Dormans I’ve heard of that town, there’s reports that the fire could burn for a couple hundred years or so it’s cool to think about :))
Burning roots of trees...So totally unlikely as to be unrealistic.

Literally just found your Channel two hours ago but it made me think.. it’d be so cool to like make a base and one by one improve it all season. Like every year find a nice area, create a shelter, and all season long just return to spend the night, make something new and improve it. Maybe bring friends and expand it. Like you could create your own little hut just for fun for a whole year
i was thinking that
I recommend TA Outdoors, he does that kind of stuff.
Hey man I do that

Yesssssssssir that would b the best
Too many military words for me

"Time to do the dishes" *puts plank on fire*
Gotta love it
Be careful building a fire on wet rocks. One time I had a rock blow up from steam pressure/expansion and I was picking pieces out of my arms and neck for hours. If you think a piece of sawdust hurts wait till you get a rock chip going 50 mph stuck in it. Nice job on everything else. Just don't want you going blind.
Chicken Fried Bobcat 1 in a million or less change to blow a rock, never cracked any of them even at sauna
nizzeeeee If the rocks have any internal moisture the water will build pressure and explode, like a volcano. A rock from a sauna is dry and water is ladled over the surface of the hot, dry, rock thus producing steam. If you soaked a semi porous rock and then heated it sufficiently your one in a million chance turns into a guaranteed recipe for disaster.
@@nizzeeeee2761 I've seen tons of rocks explode from extreme heat. It is an extremely common phenomena.
I've seen it plenty of times but only with river rocks although I'm sure rocks away from rivers could also contain enough moisture
Chicken Fried Bobcat How would you know what rocks are safe to prevent that from happening? Or what else could you do to prevent that?
Man! I'm drooling over food cooked on firecamps. Simple food yet super good

Agreed. Love this video. Except I always cringe when he slips while carrying the big stone. Yikes.
don`t you mean scout
Rocks are a great idea but if you use river rock be cautious because it has a tendency to explode at high temps .
My parents knew this couple that got a really nice sculpted fire pit, made of river rock. I'm sure you can guess how that went. Amazingly enough no one got hurt. They had all stepped away from the fire for one reason or another before the explosion.
Why does that happen? I never knew that!
@@dot9711 river stones are relatively loose sediment clumped together and not as hard as other stones. Not an expert tho
Martin thanks:)

Cool video, I like how this dude didn't go and cut trees that he needed but tried to find broken or dead ones.
Charlie King live trees make bad fire wood
Also heavier to carry thanks to that extra moisture.
