It is a great remaster in concept, but it sucks that it had dogshit support after launch.. no Xbox One X update or X/S optimization, not even a fix for that intermittent blur/sharpening effect on a 4K display. PC optimization is still broken!

The remaster is great ill give it that(the campaign), but it fucking bugs me that they ruined the atmosphere by turning the brightness up to 95 and removing the costant eerie feeling the original had, tiny details like that make me preffer the original above the rest, was also harder on insane RAAM is a beast

Something that I like from Ultimate edition was the fact that instead of Marcus being angered at Kim’s death he’s instead shocked along with that cutscene RAAM completely towers over everyone which works really well

Same, I always hated how Marcus just sits there and watches as RAAM approaches and kills Kim in the original. That being said, I also hate that They changed RAAM staring into Kim's lifeless eyes before he tossed his corpse down and walked away like a badass.

For me it doesn't suit his character. Marcus is a strong intimidating man that never seemed intimidated by anything, he looked death in the face and just went with it without complaining once. What annoys me the most about Ultimate Edition is the change of camera work during cutscenes. In the original, it has some kind of "found footage" vibe, with the camera shaking and not focusing on particular characters. It really gave a feeling of unease. In UE the camera feels too action movie, you lose most of the horror aspect.

You can see a major change of tone just by looking at the menus they make for this new games, its either a close up on a Character's Model or a Map. For Gears 1, one of the most chilling moments was loading the game, hearing that haunting soundtrack and seeing that red omen flashing. In Gears UE, you got the same music, but it doesnt fit anymore because of the bright maps as backgrounds.
The graphics for Gears UE are good and the additional chapters are a welcome surprise (I agree they dont add much to the story tho), but everything is too bright and polished. I felt the same thing about the Queen reveal at the end, it was not a good choice and I believe the true intention of that cutscene was to show the Hydra not the one riding it, by showing Myraah they changed the focus.

This is coming from someone who has never played the original so I won't have any nostalgia bias. Personally, I think I can look past that, I love how the characters seem to have way more "emotion" in their facial animations when compared to original, but I I do see what you mean, a lot of the gritty and sort of colorless color scheme is pretty much gone but since I never played the original I guess it never really impacted me that much.

This video did bring up some decent points, but I feel he was too harsh on the remaster. The remaster gets many things right, and it reminds us gamers that games used to be really good back then; they were just limited by the technology of their time.
If anything, XBOX Game Studios and the Coalition should be giving us faithful video game adaptions to the Gears of War novels. They could have the events told in those books in chronological order using the modern iteration of the Unreal Engine in one collection. This can help keep the Coalition busy while satiating the Gears of War fanbase for more story content. It wouldn't surprise me if these adaptions or a collection of adaptions sold like hotcakes if marketed properly.

I haven’t played the OG Gears in well over a decade, but there are beats and quotes that I still regurgitate to this day.
Cole and Baird split off in to the sewers, Marcus and Dom regrouping with them through a grate in the floor - Dom can “smell them from a mile away” Baird gets pissed, Marcus argues, Dom and Cole mock their argument.
    “Ain’t that cute?”
“Like two assholes on their first date.”
The introduction of the Theron Guard:
    “uhh..what was that noise?”
    “just the wind”
“Yeah right, when was the last time the wind said ‘hostiles!’ to you!?”
“I hope I got the right path here”
“HEY! I hope we BOTH do”
    “Lookit all that juice!”
“How much you think all this is worth?”
    “I don’t think I can count that high…”
There are so many memorable moments, particularly Act 2 + 3 with the Kryll and factory respectively. The introduction to lambent wretches in the rain, seeing them clamber over pipes (where you’re heading, dreading impending ambush) through the storm. The terror and tension of having to use spotlights to stay out of shadows for fear of being chewed up by kryll, all while being under fire from a troika turret and snipers, using propane tanks to create traversable areas…
The game was methodical in its mechanical execution. It rewarded the time spent in cover, planning your next move. It wasn’t just point and shoot, it was about tactical positioning (some times a little obsessively, nearly every firefight had a flanking route to take) and co-operation.
The characters in the original had chemistry, individual personality, that was so easy to digest and understand. They were a unit that bonded as the story progressed, and as a result the player bonded with them too. We’ll never get another GoW and it’s kind of heartbreaking to see what the franchise has become. I could just be jaded by nostalgia but GoW was the first game I had seen on the 360, the day it released - my friend showed me and he had reached the tomb with the first berserker encounter. I was only 13 but I was stunned and immediately engrossed. The atmosphere, the polish, the design, all of it was gold standard innovation.
What we have now is a dead horse being snub executed with a 10 year old mashing the B button.

I don't think any of the dialog was actually re-recorded. Just remastered.
However, I won't disagree that UE feels like the inferior version.
A lot of the animation looks very cartoon like. Just watch the scene where Marcus and Dom are running out of the prison towards the helicopter.
I also feel like the PC chapters don't add anything meaningful, and as mentioned here, only slow down the progress of the overall story. One of my biggest gripes about UE is that you can't choose whether to play the campaign with or without those extra chapters.

Just for fact correction the team symmetric-style map multiplayer tdm gameplay was started around mid 2006. As this was when the filming for "Race To E3" and showcase for an unreleased map called "MP_WaterFront." (Was private show casing and leftover content files as for how I know the map name.) MP likely was finalized around the 2 weeks before released, but actual development dates months back.
The Brumak chapter from what I remember was added back in, because it was a scrapped enemy and vehicle type (like how you could ride it in Gears 2.) So it made sense as to utilize the time bit of extra power PCs had, promotional reasons, and to fill in the lack of content that Act V had. (Plus think too they couldn't do it back then with 360 as how terrible update support was)

For a supposed fan you get a lot of stuff wrong in these videos. Microsoft didn’t create the Coalition let alone didn’t create it with the sole purpose of creating Gears. They tapped Black Tusk Studios (an already existing dev) to make the game since they were so impressed with their tech demo and game concept they were working on since their inception. Microsoft put that project on hold the moment they got the Gears IP. Microsoft sought out Rod Furgeson to shepherd the series. It was ROD’s decision to turn Black Tusk into The Coalition, it was Rod’s decision to make Black Tusk the 343 of Gears. It was ROD’s decision to do Ultimate and I quote “show me you guys know how to make Gears first.” He wanted Ultimate to be the way it turned out. He wanted the series to be stagnant in 4 because he didn’t let them deviate from the formula like they did with 5. As bad as the story and Kait is in 5 the gameplay is probably the most interesting in the series. They managed to evolve it past just chest high walls unlike 4. Rod was also the one that pushed for Kait to be the main character. He’s also the one who would says stuff like “first female gears character”…. Even tho he worked on 1 and Anya existed. Not to mention Sam or Sophia in 3 or Judgment. And you can tell by his interviews and the way he treated and responded to the fan base over RIGHTFUL criticism of Kait. Go figure Rod sucks all live, soul, and creativity out of Gears, shits on the legacy of the previous trilogy with all this revisionist bullshit…….. then he leaves after Gears 5 launches. Rod was always the problem with Gears and especially the new Gears. There may be hope yet for 6 but I know for a fact a lot of Coalition devs were bummed that Rod came in, cancelled their dream project and chined them to Gears. I know there’s some bitterness and resentful ness behind the scenes

    • @MIComp7806
      @MIComp7806 2 года назад

From what I remember it was Rod's idea for G1 at the time, which a second player could pick gender-based characters. Wasn't just fully implemented to have player-character based lineup scripting like in G3-5, along with possible storyline damage when Microsoft contracted Epic for more titles. (So lot of what he had asked for years did exist, but just needed team of people and technical limitations to voice opinions)
Problem think with Gears UE in general was with them reworking lot of assets and heavily changing post processing, lighting, and rendering in general. Lot of split fans were probably hoping of a soft-remaster, which had very few changes for cheap price tag. Xbox One compiled and 1080P/60 FPS gameplay, textures increased to their original 4096x4096 image scale (anything lower remastered, or retrieved from Epic's archives), and lastly bug fixes and content from PC port. (Mainly fixing issues on side related to particles and materials, can be seen on maps like Rooftops, main menu and gun reload animations. Along side with improved server-side networking usage to prevent issues on host advantage.)
Gears 4 from what I remember was being worked on by Epic before the franchise acquisition, based on an in-house G3 rewrite to early version of UE4 (lot of G3 assets can still be found in retail as temporary placements.) As likely was that and UE were likely part of the reason too why that game was stagnant, besides all the technical changes.

Not only is he shown being a badass Gear who's survived not only the Pendulum War but also has 14 years as a soldier in the Locust war under his name. I also liked how in this one he puts up a fight against RAAM since the two have history to which Kim would recognize that RAAM is sneaking up on him like when he killed Valera. It also made sense that while Kim did put up a fight only being able to use his chainsaw since RAAM was too close for him to reload the lancer RAAM quickly dispatched of him since the only reason RAAM lost to Kim the first time was because he was getting jumped by a full squadron of gears instead of it being a one on one. This shows respect to both hardened warriors while continuing to make RAAM look bad ass even more so in the remaster since him being able to manhandle Kim by disarming him of his lancer by holding the chainsaw directly in his hand then kicking him away before going in for the death blow is more bad ass than when he just snuck up on him a decked Kim on the head before killing him.

I think personally Ultimate Edition is a solid 7/10 remaster. It's fine if you want a more modern experience or something closer to what a flashback would look like, funnily enough.
I think the crisp lighting compared to the originals dark, moody tone sets a different kind of isolation. The original has an oppressive atmosphere, but the remaster reminds me of a cold overcast day. Even the title screen reflects that. I've always had this notion that a lot of the time, when back things happen, the world goes on, which is why horrible things happen on beautiful days. In the same way, I think the remaster unintentionally captures this idea. The best example I can point to is at 3:16 when the lighting is bright, but not... optimistic? It's partly sunny, and while you're focused on fighting the Locust, there is still an entire world out there that is just devastated.
Also, in the entire game's defense, though you didn't really bring it up - the game takes place in a fallen city. The Locust have no need to pillage human settlements, they can just make it underground, so it kind of makes sense for plants and such to be untended but not overgrown. There's not much for the plants to soak up or a reason for them to be wild. The original and the remaster both have this as a sort of background thought.

4:21 If they never would have put multiplayer in the series and there was people who said "I wish this game had multiplayer" There would be thousands of people defending the lack of multiplayer saying stuff like "Not every game needs multiplayer! It would have taken away from the story, it would probably have been bad anyway and would not be able to compete with the competition" and so on.
There are so many games over the years that didn't have multiplayer which I would have loved to see multiplayer for and we will never know if they would have been successful or not. I'm so glad they decided to add it, it was very successful too back then.

The attention to detail has been really dumbed down in the remake, take Nightfall: Lethal Dusk for Example where you saw thousands of Kryll flying around in a streamline manner while the remake only shows dozens mindlessly flying around and of course there's Belly of the Beast: Downpour where the thunder and lightning were crashing while a torrential downpour was occurring that added the horror and tension, and then there's the dead bodies where there are these generic red sweatshirt models with half of their face missing that looked like they were killed five minutes prior while the originals where half rotted skeletons, and the camera work is WAY too static and the ending is too fast paced.

All I want is the original trilogy on pc. what's the point in releasing gears 1, 4 and 5 for pc and then missing out on 2, 3 and judgement. Where they went wrong is only releasing the first game on pc then calling it ultimate edition when it should have released all the games in one pack like Halo mcc

I concur, the truth is Microsoft didn't have a plan for Gears of War when they bought it. Just make more and milk it dry. Which is why the new ones (the sequels, including "Tactics") are really inconsistent, dumb, and often unplayable. Just throwing stuff at a wall to see what sticks, instead of actually listening to their fan base.

@@OMAHA16 Your definitely right about that, at the moment we have to stick to playing all of them on an emulator which is not the most reliable but it works, I'm disappointed in Microsoft as they are the ones preaching game preservation and what not, then when its time to walk that walk, they start buckling over their own feet and look like amateurs.

One of the first things I noticed mihns death and how the new scene had less of an impact. The original scene was badass. The new one seemed watered down. With the old one you could tell that he was blinded by everything going on and was wrapped up in battle and didn't see the big guy coming after him.

I liked Ultimate edition for the updated visuals but the colourful palette was just off putting, Gears 1 wasn’t colourful because it wasn’t supposed to be. If they wanted colour they could have made another Halo game.

another point of contention with this game despite i would much rather be playing it rn MP wise; is the fact they literally told use. (TC) that this remake was only made so they can learn how to develop gears of war. Which you already pointed out the problems in the campaign... but this was also for MP.. however gears 4, 5 are such VASTLY different games. the mp experience really didnt matter nor benefit the company.. hell even 4 mp is not benefiting... cause the mess that is 5. every single time, they tell you we nerfed the lancer and maybe a slight buff, but the gnasher gets "fixed" every update.. The gnasher doesnt stop getting changed despite the gun has been fine several times.. The new games and weapon additions are a mess. they did not study why gears 1 worked... they just copy and pasted it learning nothing from the remake.
We have area of denial grenades (ink which was replaced for shocks later on in the series)
grenades that instantly kill you even if they land beside you and still also have an area of denial (flames)
grenades that detonate several seconds after impact...
torque bow can stick a person, can kill someone even if they torque does not stick, but no additional zoom and smaller ammo count. kill execution downs from afar. also chance to kill more than 1 enemy
we had snipe which has a full zoom, more shots, and does massive damage to the body encouraging team play. also can kil execution downs (1 shot downs suck. stfu)
then they add the embar... can kill numerous enemies in 1 shot. gets 3 shots in a clip. lots of ammo. if it was active it also stopped players from being able to shoot as it stunned them temporary..can kill execution down and the guy trying to pick him up plus as many people in the way of its shot. (Snipe HAD COLLATERAL at one point-Gears J) we get it tc.. your weapons are better than both weapons that competed for attention. if all three of these were on a map, id push this first always. in original gears, lets say t bow and snipe are on the map.. its a lot more of a toss up which i want to get...
i mention the grenades and such cause im pretty sure flame nades got implemented in G3. Epic was not always perfect though.. they did also make the same mistakes as tc in some ways.. but the difference is, TC just constantly lies to us. learning how to develop gears... no they didnt... they literally learned nothing.. thats why gears 4 story is freaking terrible.. thats why 5 is even worse... plus every time the games are in water... rod fergusson leaves... after pushing his politics into the game to look good on twitter... im glad he is gone but every time he dips when things dont go how HE wants them..

Honestly think it had to deal more with terms of the art style and how characters/environments were made. As if you look at some of TC's late 2014 to 2015 concepts for the Swarm they originally designed them to be more of as aquatic-alien like, rather than combination of humanoid-reptilians like the Locust. While many of environments are futuristic, the COG had more of industrial and Roman architecture from Gears 1 to 3. Plus final opinion was that it gave the engine more room as for how to break boundaries of Unreal, so you can submit requests to the engine team for additions like how Epic done their work.
As for the multiplayer I think they based it off more towards the type of gameplay Gears 3 and Judgment had. As basically before Gears 4 started work TC ended up porting and rewriting ton of the old Gears 3 assets and code over to the more updated UE4 counterparts (for instance unreal script was ancient by then, so everything had to be rewritten over to C++.) After once the build was more stable then development for Gears 4 could be viewed inside of Gears 3's artstyle and assets, which later would be basically finalized in how they had in vision for Gears 4 and 5.
By final means too they didn't copy and paste much of Gears 1's work. It was built on top of the 2007 port with much of netcode and other features being backported from Gears 3's engine build. Along with some physical code either written by them, or taken directly from UE4. This reason though is pretty much why ton of the lighting, physical assets, etc all look very much different for even a UE3 game made from around the same time.
