"And the power of reason and the flowers of deep feelings seem to serve me only to deceive me." I can't imagine a more powerful description of a sad, disbelieving loneliness.
The tuning Joni uses for this track is very strange, imagine being able to keep track of all the subtle, nuanced tuning configurations, I am in awe of this!
I was there. She came on around 1:00 pm after 4 mediocre acts. It was a Sunday night and everyone was tired and people started to leave! The noise of the exiting crowd was terrible! A couple of hundred people stayed. We had all come to see her but the confusion was too much. Her performance was great. But the concert was awful.
Mixed bag! I did notice that Nov 20 was a Saturday (was wondering if she played this Thanksgiving weekend, but no) and it must've been 1am you saw her? Just trying to visualize : )
I'm sure she came on stage around 1:00 am. We had sat through maybe 3 long sets by various bands prior to her set. It was exhausting to hear so much mediocre music knowing that this sublime artist would eventually appear. My sister how brought me had to leave. I was really pisses off. The floors in the old auditorium are wood and the sound of the exiting throng was beyond belief. True story.
@@davidmayhew8083 1am makes sense after a long list of acts. Truly envious you can listen to this and connect it to being there!! It’s the most stripped down version, not sure you’ll find another version like it (though I’m not one to dig that deep haha )
I was there, too, what an amazing performance. This music was brand new, too, Hejira was released a few days after this concert. So glad I stayed...I've never forgotten that night and how blown away I was by Jaco. Nobody plays the bass like Jaco!
While she's tuning she's humming the bridge to Stardust... could easily have baan a song of hers Sometimes I wonder why I spend The lonely night dreaming of a song The melody haunts my reverie And I am once again with you When our love was new And each kiss an inspiration But that was long ago Now my consolation Is in the stardust of a song
Well, no musician likes to do a song the same way live, year after year. But this guitar part is iconic, and I sadly agree that the song is lacking without it, however much musical frills are put on top.
Her best song by a mile ... sheer beauty ... easily one of the greatest songs ever written
Her guitar work is just insanely amazing and no matter many times I listen to her I will never get sick of it, I still get the chills
Thank you so much for posting this videos, music history...

Wow. Loved the tuning session, and she has such a feel for the instrument.

I love that you get to hear Joni tune her guitar and how Song for Sharon emerges.
Wonderful, love this tuning💓
This is an audience recording I think, won't it be fabulous to see the cleaned up show recording on Archives Vol 4 or 5!! 🙂
That is what I am very much hoping for too! Just exceptional.
Track down her performance at the Gene Autry Theater. On of the greatest acoustic guitar & vocal performances ever recorded.

Mi amor imposible desde la década del 70. La maravillosa Joni Mitchell

I am so sorry to hear that because of all the versions of “Song for Sharon” I have listened to this is my favorite one. It’s transcendent.

beautiful Michael .. thanks for sharing that!
Grammy's for Joan
Finally a good live version of this. I don't really like her later jazzed up versions at all.
I think mostly than the jazzing up is destacting from Joni wonderful guitar or piano performance
