Fair question. It wasn't a literal pirate ship. The ship they're singing about was a freighter which was equipped with hidden guns and sent out to prey on Allied merchant ships, capturing or sinking them and looting their cargo. It's more about how a crew member might have felt, being on this ship month after month, never seeing the shore and living in a world where your ship is forever pretending to be something it isn't.
