- France hopes to regain full control of events in New Caledonia "in the coming hours," Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said, after a third night of riots that have killed four people amid anger over a contested electoral reform.
Rioters have burnt businesses, torched cars and looted shops, and road barricades put up by protesters were causing a "dire situation" for access to medicine and food in the French-ruled Pacific island, authorities said.
France declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia and went on to put at least 10 people under house arrest and ban TikTok.
Rioting erupted over a new bill, adopted by lawmakers in Paris on Tuesday, that will let French residents who have lived in New Caledonia for 10 years vote in provincial elections - a move some local leaders fear will dilute the indigenous Kanak vote.
Electoral reform is the latest flashpoint in a decades-long tussle over France's role in the mineral-rich southwest Pacific island.
French President Emmanuel Macron's government has come under harsh criticism from the opposition and past prime ministers, who say they should not have pressed ahead with the reform.

@@edwardbernthal160 different laws in different countries about citizenship. but for example, only in 2021, over 800 000 people from Syria and Morocco got citizenships in France and Spain.... so they obviously got voting rights too. EU parlament and so on.
and its happening every year. thats only 2 countries allowed almost a million votes.
and its certainly not 10 years wait. it doesnt really matter how long is the wait when the flow of illegal migrants is NON STOP every year. means every year there will be people from outside of EU getting voting rights.

I like how everyone is saying "Free New Caledonia" when they were given the opportunity to leave France 3 TIMES the past 5 years via referendum, but they all overwelminghly chosen to stay in France.

France send troops to secure their people businesses and interests
New Caledonia is partly subsidized by France. If France goes out of that region it will last for approx 30-40 years as this is the time the nickel ore deposits will be depleted. Not to mention that most of the income from it will be distributed among local corrupt officials (like in Haiti). Next they will be asking for a an aid from big countries. Under the rule of France local at least can immigrate in search of a better living as they hold French passports. In case of independence they will lose that opportunity and will be locked on that island in poverty. Speaking about income from tourism - the island is too remote to generate reasonable cash flow from tourism as there are other areas with "nice sandy beaches" and with more stable social environment. All in all New Caledonians shoot themselves in the foot with this unrest.
Nah the region seems more stable and a lot better than African countries and Haiti.I reckon they will do just fine like all the surrounding countries in the pacific.A lot of untapped resources too like oil,deep sea mining,nickel, gold etc.I can see them developing strong diplomatic ties and economic trade with countries like Australia, New Zealand and surrounding neighbours.Even the US has strong interest for the pacific.Or they have China,Japan,Singapore,Philippines, Malaysia etc.We'll see how it goes if they do get independence which I doubt they will.
Stop French colonization. It's ridiculous for an island in the Pacific to be part of France. If colonization continues, the local Kanaks will lose their island and become a minority in their homeland.
