On January 11, 2013, the body of Kendrick Johnson (October 10, 1995 - January 10, 2013) was discovered inside a vertical rolled-up mat in the gymnasium of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, United States, where he was a student. After a preliminary investigation and autopsy concluded that Johnson's death was accidental, his family had a private pathologist conduct a second autopsy which concluded that he died from blunt force trauma. On October 31, 2013, the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Georgia announced that his office would open a formal review into Johnson's death. On June 20, 2016, the Department of Justice announced that it would not be filing any criminal charges related to Johnson's death.
On January 11, 2013, the body of Kendrick Johnson was discovered in the gymnasium of Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Georgia, found headfirst in the center of a vertical rolled-up wrestling mat. The body was discovered by fellow students who had climbed up to the top of a cluster of mats, which stood nearly 6 feet (1.8 m) tall and 3 feet (0.91 m) wide. An autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) stated that Johnson had died from positional asphyxia, and the case was ruled an accidental death by the Lowndes County investigators.
Authorities hypothesized that Johnson had fallen into the mat while looking for a shoe and died after being unable to get out. Three students at Lowndes High School told investigators that it was common for some students to store their shoes behind or under the rolled up mats; Johnson was not wearing shoes when he was found. A student at the school said that he shared a pair of Adidas shoes with Johnson, and that after gym class Johnson would always "go to the mats, jump up and toss the shoes inside the middle of the hole."
Lt. Stryde Jones, who headed up the investigation for the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office, stated: "We never had credible information that indicated this was anything other than an accident. Johnson's family questioned this hypothesis. Unsatisfied with the result of the investigation, they hired an independent autopsy conducted by William R. Anderson with Forensic Dimensions in Heathrow, Florida, on June 15, 2013. Anderson claimed that his findings indicated traces of blunt force trauma to the right neck and soft tissues, and suggested the death was not accidental.
Kendrick Johnson is laid to rest in Valdosta, Georgia at historic Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Scott, you're correct. It does seem just like yesterday. This case has always stayed with me. He had his whole life ahead of him. My heart breaks for his family. Eleven years later and we have more questions than answers. We need closure for his family. Personally, I think he was murdered. This case needs to keep getting the attention it deserves. May Kendrick Johnson R.I.P. this case reminds me exactly of my best friend who is long gone, passed away almost 7 years ago now. Still an open case, same race as Kendrick, me, his family and friends believe he's been murdered. Improper investigation, at least there has been a proper one since, no answers, a lot of questions. I hope both Kendrick Johnson and my best friend get the answers to unanswered questions. R.I.P
I remember when this horrible case happened. What just a horrific case & way to die. Way just way too young. No one deserves this. Kendrick was a very talented basketball player from what I seen, read & heard about him & very intelligent & I definitely believe it. What a beautiful & sad grave like you said. I been studying this story for the longest. I watched the documentary, read many different articles and I still can't get over his death and all the stuff the family went through and still going through til this very day. They killed that young man and he or his family ain't getting justice because the killers are racist and related to a racist cop.

Brian was on camera on the complete opposite side of the school going into his 4th block class. The class and teacher all verified that he was there the whole period, and cameras don't show him leaving until class ended.
Branden left on a bus about 20 minutes before 1PM. Cell data placed the bus almost 80 miles away at the relevant time, his coaches, teammates, and bus driver all verified he was on the bus, and he was present for his 4PM weigh in all the way in Macon.

@@PiscesH He had his organs when he died. They were removed during autopsy for weight and inspection. When autopsies are done the organs are not placed back in place but put into a bag and rested in the body cavity, abdomen When the funeral home picks up the body and prepares it for viewing and funeral they don't always put the bag back into the body. In this case they were decomposed so it was discarded. The newspaper stuffed into the body, this is something funeral homes tend to do with various materials when having to "fill" and form certain body cavities and the body itself. That's why sometimes the funeral home will tell people don't touch the body because they had to do what was needed to make the person presentable for viewing. Not that they are hiding anything about it but rather not have the body touched and damaged. This isn't always done though to everyone. He was decomposed so they had to prepare him accordingly. In this case that particular funeral home used newspapers so when the second autopsy was done they found the newspaper. This is something known in the death industry and little known to the public so hearing this would raise speculation.
@PiscesH his organs were removed at his autopsy and discarded by the funeral home because they were too decomposed for his open casket funeral.
I watched a documentary about Kendrick a few years ago…Absolutely tragic.
Sometimes you look at a photograph and the love just seems to radiate from it and that’s what I see when looking at that photo of Kendrick and his parents…his mother is looking at him with pure love and you can see how proud she is of him. My heart just breaks for her and all of his family.
Hearing what I think happened to him would serve no purpose so I’ll keep that to myself…Sometimes people think their theories need to be heard but they don’t….I hope he is resting peacefully and I hope his family are living some kind of happy life without their precious boy ❤

What is the documentary called. I still think this young man was murdered, possibly by accident, but definitely killed but person or persons unknown. I feel terrible for his family.
@ltvanburen8555 if you value truthful evidence, either do not watch that documentary, or at least go into it knowing they told many half truths and outright lies.
It's terribly sad, but the official story of it being an accident makes sense. The bruising was probably due to smacking the floor with his chin as he fell in. Any screams would be completely muffled inside of a rolled up foam mat.

This case was (is) just chilling. So many questions that will probably never be answered. Between his death and autopsy that was done it's like they tried to kill him twice. Why would he be treated like this? It's so sad. Families have a tough time accepting outcomes. They are angry and want someone to blame, someone to pay for what happened to him. I understand it completely and think most of us would feel the same way. But when all is said and done, and they've done everything they could do to determine the cause and manner of death but can't come to a definitive answer, then you have to realize at some point that all anyone can do now is to let him rest in peace and allow God to be the final judge one day. For me, there's no escaping that. If wrong doing was done to this poor boy then sooner or later someone will pay the price. RIP Kendrick ❤ 💐

My mom dropped by a transport worker when she was going to be realsed from the hospital, and then she was readmitted for injuries. then she had pnuemonia heart trouble and they had her on a little more oxygen that expected. i was'nt there at the time my mom died. and i feel bad because im disabled myself and its hard for me to get around. but i loved her hopefully i can get through this someday without being so sad and angry. for everyone who is grieving feeling lost don't be afraid to ask for help. sending postive thoughts and love to all from Vickie💗💗💞

5:24 That stadium is one of things I look for when taking I-75 from Atlanta to Florida. My high school had a spectacular football team, and I can just imagine attending a game there. Honestly, I can't believe this happened 11 years ago! Being in GA, it was all over the news. Maybe the cv*d years messed with our sense of time. Thanks for this. KJ needs to be remembered.

I lived in Valdosta at the time. I was in college ran afoul of the law and wound up in Sunset Hill Cemetery where Kendrick rests. The incident really divided this town. Let me just say this. From what I picked up around town and the evidence, I don’t believe it was an accident. This is strictly my opinion. I was on the crew who prepared the gravesite. When I heard who was to be buried there it hurt my heart so badly. Rest In Paradise Kendrick

I remember hearing about this case. I have my own personal beliefs on what happened but I am not going to get into it on here. Thank you for bringing more attention to a young man in which like you said was robbed of his life. You are the only one that gives so much respect to everyone. Thank you for everything that you do. I know it isn't much, but I would like to believe that you do bring some kind of peace and comfort to those who lost a loved one. You don't allow them to be forgotten.

You show and immortalise the person your talking about. I love that you show and talk about him and others you do as the person he was and possibly could of been. That’s so sad that’s probably what could happen. There is another story of a gentleman that worked at a grocery store and he went missing and they found him upside down between a wall in a cooler where he was trying to reach something and he suffocated and died as well The stories are so sad passed away from freak accident.
And to think his killer got away with it and got married with the girl he killed him over.
