Cyd Charisse, ballet dancer

- From Bandwagon. For once we see Cyd as a classical ballet dancer, very different from her style in most of her films. When Diaghilev's Ballet Russes toured the United States, Cyd was one of the cast.

Holy wow her strength, grace & fluidity!!!
And when we recall Cyd fought against Polio when a young girl!!! And became the most disciplined, accomplished dancer!!! Great Cyd Charisse!!
Elegant, beautiful, perfect.
She was so beautiful and so talented ..
I could watch her dance forever. Grace, beauty and as her husband said. A real lady.
Cyd Charisse is pure and absolute poetry in motion in this ballet!!!
She is my idol! Absolutely Divine Dancer!
I wish cyd charisse had more ballet scenes like this. I can't get enough. Exquisitely beautiful!
❤
She definitely is an extremely well-trained ballet dancer, yet can dance to just about any other types of musical numbers. Well done!
Except tap dancing
@@jazzmatazz6827 You're right! I've never seen her tap dance ever. Good comment.
@@dudley5533 I'm sure she could do it if needed or wanted to
Because she had a real technique, not what passes as technique today. Her weight is properly distributed so she is balanced and in control, not overcoming imbalance with muscle power.
I think she did soft-shoe sort of tap in some jazz numbers. @@dudley5533
What a beautiful dancer and a beautiful lady. Thx so much 4 posting.
All my days! She is simply exquisite. She was tall, yet her ballet movements are sublime. I think being tall as a ballerina has a degree of difficulty that more slight ballerinas do not experience. Am in awe of her talent. Tabernac !!!!
Actually, her technique is very poor. Her knees are all over the place, really bad head positioning and spotting, the chaine turns were bad, and her extensions were bad. To a non-ballet dancer, she does seem impressive, but in reality, you can tell that years of no proper training as a classical dancer have taken their toll. But she is a swift and powerful jumper. And yes, taller ballerinas do have some specific struggles.
She could do anything!
Cyd you were just lovely! It seems that you flew! Such grace and perfection! I love you and Fred in The Bandwagon... out of this world!!!!!
omg!!! she was amazing!! i love her!!
Amazing indeed stunning in every performance CYD Amazing!
those sharp turns just lovely
Pure, unadulterated class!
She's perfect *-*
I love this movie.
The best female dancer ever in my opinion!!!!
I could watch her mow the lawn.....tie her shoes.....whatever. What a woman.
Love her dancing in "Bandwagon"--classical ballet and with Astaire later--one of my favorite dances, much like hers with Gene Kelly in "Heather on the Hill". Thank you for sharing this!
Beautiful, talented, and athletic! She had a little Ava Gardner look about her.
Just gonna say!
Maravillosa Cyd ... extraordinaria en todo tipo de danza ... Siempre la recordaremos como excepcional, la mejor, la más bella ...
Damned right, fella! Tell it the way it is!!!!
My, God! How I lusted after this beyond beautiful, talented woman!!! Damn Tony Martin for holding her hostage all those years and keeping her away from us crazy characters who only wanted to marry her ourselves!!!! She was just the best of the best!!!!
una maravilla de bailarina...peliculas hermosa de gran gusto y calidad...era un placer asistirlas....nostalgia.....
¡Ay, Cid Charisse! Mujer maravillosa y total.
Gracias, amistad, por compartir.
Her shoes are so so tiny! The box is absolutely teeny tiny. I think back then they didn’t have much choice with shoes and those were probably so hard to dance in. I read she didn’t start ballet until age 14! With the level of training and technique being taught back then she is phenomenal. If she had started at 9 or 11 even she would have been a primary. I do think she may have been a bit tall at the time for a ballerina but her acting and artistry would have made up for it
Fantastic and beyond !!!❤
gorgeous
wow...no wonder she had such poise when she danced in the movies....
Amazing scene!
Love this! Had never seen her dance ballet before. Love her in all her dancing roles which I had seen. Thank you for this unique post and share.
Desiree de Angelise you never saw her in “the unfinished dance”? Pure ballet and she’s utterly breathtaking.
Cyd Charisse è un incanto vederla ballare !!!
I knew her.
She was as nice as she was gorgeous and talented.
Wonderful!
Сид Чарисс!!!
Брависсимо!!!
Светлая память!

Bandwagon film with Fred Astaire. she was great here too.
So musical and exciting, totally unlike Balanchine or anything contemporary. Accented movement hitting the beat and holding a pose, making it memorable. It's a kind of a pity she never was a ballerina with Ballet Theater. I used to feel so cheated when they would cut away to someone watching the dancing; now I realize that it covers a break in the choreography.
Got me wondering about her height. She was actually only about 5'6", which really puts just how tiny her leading men were.
for a ballerina, she was a little taller than average. her height was sometimes listed closer to 5'8 or so. Gene and Fred were average height too, not tiny. but, trained male ballerinas were average to below average height back then.
I would think 5’7” would be pretty tall for a ballerina. Going up on point would add many inches to her height. All that lifting by the male partners would make tiny women preferable. All dancers are solid muscle, making them heavy for their size. Just guessing - I’m not a dancer!
she was 5 7" so i hear and repOrts that she was maybe even a lil taller bc she was a smidge over fred astaire who said he was 5 9...so depends on whom youASK.'
@@abevillanueva1974 Is a male ballet dancer not called a "ballerino"?
@@JudgeJulieLit Danseur is what they are called.
Ballet technique, posture, and rhythm has evolved so much since this time it makes me wish cameras were around to record its inception in the 17th century.
Right? This is kinda wild to watch if you’re used to today’s ballet! Like I didn’t even think it was pointe at first! Very interesting to see
I imagine this is her version of firebird wonderful.
Bellissimo Ballet. Complimenti.
Just a correction for the info in the description box: Cyd danced with the Ballet Russe (singular Russe) de Monte Carlo, which was created after Diaghilev's death.
Cyd did the very best with the choreography she was offered here
Cyd’s primary male partner is the great Matt Mattox, who is over 6’ tall. Also, even though the film choreography is credited to Michael Kidd, this ballet sequence was choreographed by the great ballet choreographer Eugene Loring.
Thank you xxxxx
I didn’t know she was a ballerina too. I thought only jazz. She is giving me the biggest joy, right now. She did the red dress number in this movie, too?!?
Girl Hunt Ballet
After all of the rehearsals the supporting cast continue to marvel.
Самая красивая и талантливая американская балерина.
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, this Woman! I could watch her brush her teeth ----take out the trash-----read the yellow pages ! --------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o

👍👍👍
Cyd is my favorite of the ballerinas, although I've never seen Elenore Powell do simply ballet.
che incanto!
She desperately wanted to dance with Fred Astaire but was actually concerned she was too tall so she ‘slumped’ when she was in the same room as him! It’s nice the joke made it here. Love both of them x
Oh thank you for sharing that tidbit! I was curious if that was a remark made because she was considered a bit too tall to dance classical ballet back then because of how they used to prefer shorter women in general because women are difficult to partner when taller than their partner, also because corps work is awkward when you have lots of 5’1”-5”4 dancers and add a 5’6-5’7” ballerina at the end of the line the illusion of everyone being the same height is ruined (say for the shades entrance or the swan corps in Swan Lake.) also so many people were shorter back then from food shortages and nutritional deficiencies during the depression and the war
The very best... Cyd, than Vera Ellan, then Rita Hayworth, & finally Ginger Rogers!!!
I am gonna put Hayworth second. She was much better than most people thought.
I don't think she ever got the recognition she deserved.
It's not diaghilev ballet russes it's the Colonel De Bassil Ballet Russes
When people say Madonna, Beyonce, and Gaga are great dancers.....I just laugh.
I thought I had read somewhere or watched an interview where Cyd said that her height made Astaire uncomfortable. Like he didn't like it. I wonder how tall she was as she always seemed to either be the same height or taller than her male partners.
I bought five special editions of "Bandwagon" and passed them around. Fred was scared to death of her. Didn't feel like he belonged on the same dance floor with her. In the end, they were a fantastic couple. The special edition has interviews with cast members, etc. Buy it on ebay. Cheap and well worth the money!!!
@@rchman100 What do you mean? Did they not get along?
@@randombrokeperson ….They got along famously!!!! Fred simply did not believe he was qualified to dance with someone of Cyd's talents. Two different worlds, but, damn! They DID dance!!!!!
@@rchman100 oh wow! Thanks for explaining that!
@@randombrokeperson Also Cyd tells a story on two different 70s Merv Griffin or Dinah Shore type of shows where he went and stood on a stair near her to measure how tall she was to see if he thought it would even work, and because he was insecure about his own height. He definitely danced in her league. He was just as good for the Hollywood choreography they did together. Now on to Dancing in the Dark

She reminds me of Suzanne Farrell.
funny, i thought the same thing
She reminds me of Cyd Charisse.............
@@barbarakaufman320 her abandon.
I see it. The height and her ability to do the moves that probably look easy to the untrained eye- off balance moves where she uses the foot position we use in ballet to do “hops” the ankle and leg line is broken and you need super strong feet and thighs. She also sparkles on stage.
Suzanne had better technique of course she was strictly a ballet dancer and an ingenue. Cyd was so talented in so many different styles and wonderful actress. I wonder how often she was able to train in classical ballet and where she took her classes. She was in a traveling company for a while or seasonally if I’m not mistaken?
It’s so hard with ballet to take a break even for a week you lose the strength and accuracy so quickly.
Cyd was 5'6" which was considered above average height in her day. Her height would prevent a career as a prima ballerina. Her male partners were too small to do the lifts required in the classic roles. Kelly and Astaire were 5'7" and 5'9" so even with them, she was expected to forego pointe shoes or high heels. I love to watch her. She is rock steady on those gorgeous legs.
She is reported as saying that Gene Kelly was extremely powerful in doing lifts
Lust in my heart. I thought she was raquel welch. Maybe hotter?
Cyd? Ballet? Who knew?
N
Sad to say, the first time I saw this movie I was a bit puzzled. It seems like ballerinas are not allowed to be that statuesque any more.
those big ass wonder woman Amazon leg. i love it, I'm surprised she can get them off the ground. she'd make a awesome fighter
Yes, she could have been great at tae kwan do!
Just a correction. Diaghilev died in 1929 and Charisse danced with the successor company Le Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo under Leonid Massine's direction.
beat me to it!
In fact that was the breakaway company formed by Rene Blum and Massine after disagreeing with Diaghilev's inheritor, 'Colonel' de Basil. The latter proudly called his bunch The Original Ballet Russe. It was like two rock bands vying to be the more authentic descendant.
Cyd joined Massine's outfit, performed under fake Russian names, toured extensively and married Nico Charisse when she was 17. Three years later she had a baby, which in the bad old days was regarded as a no-no for any girl who aspired to be a prima- some were pressured into abortions. Ballet found it harder to draw audiences during the war, and Cyd was drawn into movies when Fokine's assistant David Lichine recommended her to dance director Robert Alton.
This led to a different training regime and a style that remains balletic but not impeccably classical. Fine by me, and more importantly fine by Fred, who was overtly scornful of 'toe-dancing' but secretly rather envious of its special facets. He wished he was taller and stronger.
Hands are not ballerina hands. She is no ballerina. But she is still the perfect dancer for me.
It's a Hollywood ballet number of the time which means it's not real ballet choreography. Cyd Charisse was a beautiful woman and danced well but this cannot be called good ballet dancing...
Obviously in ballet the highest level is ridiculously high and very few attain it. It is unfair however to say that Cyd did not do good ballet dancing. She did good, even if there were others who were better.
Something worth noting though is that in a movie the dancer knows that if she messes up, they can just reshoot the scene. Live ballet is a very different animal, one little slip and the whole performance might be ruined, because ballet connossieurs are just that picky. That is quite the challenge and stress to perform under and the ones who can do it are quite impressive.
@@ckfnpku What Luis Valdés means is that this choreography doesn't include ballet steps. She danced very well jazz steps, including 4 axels landing en pointe (!!!) Oh, yes, she was supported once in a poisson position. But that doesn't mean this is ballet and it doesn't mean either it's something bad. It's fantasy.
She was good enough to join Diaghilev's troupe. That was classical ballet.
EN BALLET CLASICO?... HORRIBLEEEEE!!!!.. POR FAVOR ! CON TODO RESPETO A LOS GRANDES BAILARINES NO PUEDEN DECIR QUE ESTA BIEN CID.... EN TAP O MUSICALES SIII PERO BALLET ? NOOOO...BUENO .. DISCULPEN PERO REPITO .... NOOOO😁😁😁...
Цырковую артисту больше напоминает..
She started at 14 years old and did so many other style, actress, tap, jazz, danced with famous Hollywood stars. She was a star in Hollywood and a dancer in so many disciplines. Plus the technique at this time was so much different and less strict. Especially in the West.
She was far too young to have been associated with Diaghilev! Read some more books.
Cyd Charisse no me gusta como bailarina de ballet.
