Any chance you're thinking of going to Napa Valley in April next year?
@@robertterry9854 So far I’m planning to be there for Premiere Napa Valley in February so I probably won’t be able to go back again that soon.
Great selections - thanks for sharing these!
My pleasure! Thanks very much.
some really good ideas, i love these videos, enabling me to buy different wines vs just a few.
Thanks very much! Appreciate the positive feedback. Hope you enjoy the wines you pick!
I haven’t finished watching this new video but I wanted to say that it’s such a great and helpful topic. I love this video and will definitely use the list of recommendations as reference. As always, you have the best, most helpful, most outstanding, and most relevant content on RUclips. Thank you for this! Santé, John!
Thanks very much, Margaux! Very glad it is useful! Definitely try to add value for the viewers with these videos. Hope you enjoy the rest of the video too. Cheers!
@@AttorneySommI certainly did! Hope to find at least one of these wines where I live. Thank you for this very helpful, informative, and interesting video. Superbly presented content, as always. Love the visual support as well. Looking forward to the next! Santé, John!
@@margauxml Thank you! Seemed like a nice discreet topic for a short!
Titus sent me a pack and I was impressed with some of their varietal wines like the Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Nice little list there!
Thanks! Yes, Titus does a good job. Glad you concur! Cheers!
I just love going to Napa Valley. I will check out one of this vineyards on my next trip
Thank you, Natasha! Hope that you enjoy your visit(s) as much as I did!
Great video and topic John, congrats ! Super about the Ontogeny. I have bought cases of that precise wine and I find it super delicious and excellent QPR. Once talking about Napa economics with someone of the industry seemed that there is almost no way making world class cabernet for less than $150 but you can always find hidden gems. I want to try Sinegal, never had it before. Have a great day.
Thanks very much! Very glad you enjoyed it and that you agree about Ontogeny! Hope you enjoy the Sinegal as well! Cheers!
Great topic!
Thanks very much! Appreciate the kind feedback.
I was getting to the point where I thought "Napa Valley" and "value" were a contradiction of terms. Thanks for the information, John! I'll be on the lookout for some of these on my next restocking adventure..
Thank you! Very glad it was useful! Hope that you enjoy these wines as much as I do. Cheers!
I tasted the Titus thanks to your tip and totally agree with the assessment ! Cheers!
Thanks very much! Very glad you enjoy it. Cheers!
Thanks! This was a great list. Having watched many of your videos I can see your tastes are very similar to mine.
Given that, there are two wines I never hear you mention that I think really deserve to be on this list are Chateau Montelena’s Napa Valley cab (the Calistoga cuvee) and, while not Napa, Ridge’s estate cab. Both are well-made classic cabernets in the $50-$70 range. These are two of my cellar defenders that are age-worthy, but very approachable relatively young.
Thank you! Excellent suggestions. I’m definitely a fan of both producers! For whatever reason I haven’t had the Ridge Cab as often. Do enjoy the Montelena as well but have mostly had it with age. I’ll have to try younger versions of both soon.
Great video John, love the recommendations! Have you had a chance to try Amizetta Vineyards in St. Helena?
Thank you! Have not tried that producer yet. I'll definitely keep an eye out. I'll be back in February. Cheers!
WoW! Producers from terrific NAPA VALLEY, from mono varietals and coupages, managers of vineyards and incredible winemakers to a serious review of each wine and vintage!!! And the value…Great QPR recommendations!! I adore Doug Shafer wines. They are my fascination but never had TD-9. I’m impressed about the price and wonderful reviews coming from you!! Thank s a lot John. No words that can say how much you orient me when I buy my wines from Napa. Santé
@@gabriela_dng Thank you Gabriela! Yes I’m very excited about this list! High quality wines for very reasonable prices. Appreciate the thoughtful comments!
Excellent list. A couple more for you to try: Di Costanzo single vineyard wines are outstanding at around $130, but their "DiCo" second wine is a serious bottle at less than $70. Rudd "Crossroads by Rudd", is usually between $70 and $90 and is crazy delicious. Teeter-Totter has Napa designate wine for about $60 that is not as structured as I like, but a crowd pleaser.
Thanks very much for the feedback and the very worthy additions! Much appreciated.
Hello! Excellent video! I was able to find 2019, 2020 and 2021 Caterwaul Napa Valley Cabernet. Out of thise 3 vintages, which one do you recommend? Do you know if the wildfires affected the 2020 offering?
Thanks and always enjoy your videos!!
Salud! 🍷
Thank you! I’d definitely go with 2019! I’m generally avoiding 2020 to be safe and 2019 was exceptional.
This video we could label as cellar defender napa wines. I absolutely enjoyed this…
Thank you! Very true! Glad you enjoyed it!
Have you tried the AXR? I had a taste of their red blend at the Oakville Merchant this week and it was quite good value.
I do not recall trying AXR yet, but appreciate the tip! I'll definitely keep an eye out for it. I'll be going back in February.
Very helpful John. Unfortunately Napa wines never seem to make their way over the ocean to Europe, probably because of the pricing. It would be interesting to see a quality to price comparison to Bordeaux on vintages over the last 10 years. Btw I was in Bordeaux last week and there’s mildew around so looks like production is going to be down this year.
Thanks for the feedback! Yes I have heard about the mildew problem this year. In general, I think there is higher quality Bordeaux at lower price points. I’ve done videos on 10 top Bordeaux for $30, for example. I don’t think I could do that video on Napa cabs.
I'm not trying to over-hype what you are doing but the trust you are building by talent and hard work is very reminiscent what I experienced subscribing to Robert Parker's hardcopy newsletter of the early 1980's. You very systematically develop recommendations, and we gather friends and try them. Others on RUclips try to do something similar, but no one is as thorough as you, and my friends and I just don’t find their recommendations as useful. Thank you so much!
If you have time, a quick question. Some in our group love Caymus, but they are always up for a challenge. So we try to “dethrone” Caymus every so often. One of your other videos suggested some “replacements”. Clos du Val proved to be a worthy opponent. Do you think Caterwaul should be the next challenger?
Thanks very much for letting me know. That means a lot! Very pleased that you enjoy the recommendations.
As for the Caymus, I see the 2021 selling for $100. I think there is a chance the $50 Caterwaul (especially the 2019) could dethrone it, but definitely the Caterwaul Stag's Leap at $100 should be a formidable competitor. I also think the Ontogeny and Sinegal Estate would get the better of Caymus as well. Some of the other wines in this video may need more age on them as they could be too structured on release to compare well for Caymus fans. Dominus Napanook is another one you might try against Caymus. Cheers!
Really enjoy your videos and contents. I'm wondering if there's a chance you do a video about great bottles that are exceptional to enjoy right now (from 2010). Thank you.
Thanks very much! You mean just Napa from 2010? Or any excellent wines to drink now?
@@AttorneySomm Thank you for the quick response (honestly didn't expect that). I'm open to anything, probably around $50 USD. Thank you!
@@ryannedieu Thank you! Try to respond to all comments within 24 hours! 👍🍷 My next video should have a couple you like. Not necessarily Napa though. But some excellent wines $50 or less
@@AttorneySomm thank you looking forward to it! I picked up the 2010 R lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva from one of your videos.
@@ryannedieu Excellent choice! Such a tremendous wine!
Agree with Sinegal & TD-9, but take a look at Jayson (Pahlmeyer) Red. Though they just sold to Gallo, this vineyards 2nd label red blend punches way above its weight class!!
& I forgot… Bevan’s Ontogeny is amazing as well!! Great list.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it! 👍🍷
Thanks for the suggestion and the feedback! I’ll have to try Jayson again. Been a while since I’ve had it.
Great video. These are always helpful. 2 questions. 1). Between Cab dominant Napa vintages of 2018 and 2019 which do you think is more approachable today? 2). Is it crazy to say the 2019 vintage is setting up to be in the top 3 vintages of the 2010’s?
Thanks! I think it may depend a bit on the particular wine, they are both excellent vintages. But in general I think the 19s are more approachable now and that the 18s will benefit more from additional time.
2013 and 2016 are top two for me. After that, I enjoy 14, 18 & 19. But certainly people can have different views on that and it depends on the wines they have experienced from each vintage. Great questions! Cheers!
@@AttorneySomm Hi. What are your 2013 picks? Thank you.
@@ryannedieu Hello: I don't have a specific list of picks just for the 2013 vintage prepared, but that is certainly an exceptional vintage and one that shows very well now. If there is a producer that you like generally, odds are that they have a strong offering from 2013. In terms of a value pick, you might see if you can find any Dominus Napanook. Dominus was very strong in 2013.
Not from napa, but what are your thoughts on my favorite neighbor’s cab? I thought the 2019 was great, though I got hit very hard with vanilla.
I have not tasted it recently, so probably need to do so again before commenting. It definitely receives some high scores for its price point, but it sounds like they use a liberal amount of new oak in the maturation process (based on the vanilla).
all impressive choices but a little surprised by the raymond. maybe theyve upped the ante in the last few years
Thanks! Yes, the winemaker has been doing a good job. Especially for $40, the 2019 is a very enjoyable wine.
How about a Santa Cruz Mountains wine video?
Thanks! Appreciate the suggestion! I'd probably need to visit again to do it justice. I've visited Ridge twice in the past 5-6 years and also enjoy some Calera wines, both of which I feature frequently on this channel. I'll definitely give it some thought and may be able to do a proper visit before long.
John is this your cellar?
Which one? The one where I did a short video a couple weeks ago? That one is my buddy's. I have 6-7 different storage solutions, so nothing very photogenic. But some of my b-roll shows my La Cache unit or my walk-in storage (which has wine on the floor up to my shoulders).

Wine cellar showed in this video.
@@sanjaypatelmd4669 Sorry, I'd have to watch again. Did this video a few months ago.
Sad . I cannot find these wine in my country
