- All of the competitors involved in AMA Supercross must pass a sound test prior to the race. This helps the series control the sound of the race and it encourages the manufactures to make less noisy exhaust systems. As you will see many competitors fail and have to go back to the pits or change out the muffler. Many teams see this as an annoying distraction

It's a goddam dirtbike at a dirtbike race. Put on your earmuffs nancy.
It is more with that there being so many bikes in a row and they can't hear their own bike because there are 20 different guys on the rev limiter at the same time.
I guess they have never been to Monster Jam. These bike are nothing to those monster trucks.

Tyler Kenney idk if you’ve ever raced before but you can very easily tell your bikes revs at the line, the vibration alone would make a loose hooker squirt. If for some reason your ballsack is still numb from those killer 600lb squats before the race then you can still faintly tell which bike is yours on the line because it’s closest to you and just about each of them has a different tone to it. Definitely don’t think it’s a starting line thing to hear their own revs but hey, who am I since I’m not a AMA racer today.

Best job ever to rev bikes to the limiter
If its factory bikes yes. Local races, not so much :P
They are nowhere near the limiter. Here in Europe under 500 cc bikes are measured at 4500 rpm and 250cc at 5000 rpm. If the mechanic has any sense the engine is warm but not hot when the sound test is performed.

That first Yamaha sounded nasty lol
I'm sure glad our sound tests are not like this for road racing. Most tracks least in the Midwest are 104db and some are 103db. What's all tracks have in comon is the sound test equipment is always 75 feet off the track on drivers left side. And most all are testing on turn exit so the cars are always at Max load and rpm Wich is the cars loudest point. Now lemmy tell ya 104 db 75 feet off the center line of a track is extremely loud. I can see why the bikes are tested and held to a quiet sound for indoor with the amount of bikes on track at one time. If not then there will be alot of bleeding ears in the crouds. Kinda crazy how say a sound at 80db to say 90db does not seem very different then a test from 90db to 100 db is alot more noticeable and from 100 to even 102 is even more noticeable and 102 to 103 db is even worse. Bottom line is ya loud is cool but not having permanent ringing in ones ears is even cooler. Take it from me I need to sleep with the TV on or radio just to drown out the ringing from being around cars on the outdoor race track and it will never go away

I think the theory here is the people who cry most about those things are liberals. Sound limits are fine with me, no riding areas left where I live thanks in part to loud bikes. But this seems like a really easy test to cheat on, maybe something more realistic should be used? I imagine any manufacturer or team having trouble could easily program the ECU to limit RPMs and change timing and fueling specifically for lower sound when in neutral!?
Matt South they normally just put a rag in the air box. Old factory trick
Matt South the “ rev limiter” which everyone including me calls it isn’t actually a rev limiter, it’s actually just when the valves flutter or float. So they could limit the bikes to a certain RPM but the officials would know something was up especially if the bikes didn’t hit the “rev limiter”.
@@JhJh-gn6dz I believe the RPM is limited by the ECU. Floating valves can get smacked by the piston if the RPM gets high enough, and I doubt any manufacturer (let alone a race team) would leave that to chance. Aftermarket programmable ECUs, such as the ones by Vortex, even allow you to program the rev limit, and the way the limiter takes effect.

They've been doing this for years. I remember my 2006 KX250F had a neutral switch to help with starting and also made neutral quieter..

I had property on top of the Santa Cruz Mtns., near Loma Prieta. I couild look at Morgan Hill and down on Soquel. Under certain conditions I cpould hear the train in Morgan Hill, 8 air miles away. And a Harley, taking off from a stop sign, that Thunk Chub Chug.... My Ducati 250 scrambler with the factory megaphone was as load or loader than that HD. 2 Strokes wont do that, their a higher frequency and they dissapate in a 1/4 mile or so . 4 strokes are low frequency and will carry for more than 8 miles. PS, I had a track too. Ricky Ryan, Dean Matson, and many others rode there. Lots of fun

@Talon Jeffries the huskys airbox hole is right where the back fender and number plate meet. You can see it on the side he is on, and he moves his hand back their super quick after the bike is started. I know the pc kawi team used to cover the exhaust side airbox hole on the kawi with carbon fiber to reduce airbox noise in the direction of the testing mic. Just saying it looks real suspicious lol

Hmm when I use to to cmc series they would test at certain tracks but always at like 3000rpms, with a string a certain distance to the side,, not bouncing off the rev-limiter 😂

Personally I think it’s smart because while yes you have events like monster jam, ultimately the events are guests in that area and you don’t want it affecting the cities unlike in motocross where you have the track before the houses around (meaning the neighboring residents don’t have a leg to stand on regarding complaints since it was an established business) you have the exact opposite in Supercross meaning you have to not be a “menace” to the cities infrastructure

Torque and twice the displacement. A 250 two stroke isn't as fast.

Didn't really have this issues on 2strokes as you do with 4strokes. And they said 4strokes don't burn oil ha but the noise ear splitting. Greenies complaining about 2stroke oil now people complaining about noise which makes it harder for local tracks.

PaulXT1200Z basically everything being kinda loose won't resonate the sound as much. Sometimes you'll see the factory bikes with a map switch under the seat and its a tune for sound test and won't let it rev as high.

They put a sticker on the exhaust when you exit the gate, and they also take a sharpee marker and mark the silence also.
They also get sound checked after the race. Not all but some random spot checks do happen

Why couldn't they get in the ECU, reset the rev limiter 2000rpm lower, pass the sound test then return to the pits and put it back to where it was?
mopar 1 some teams actually change out engines after morning practice. Trust me factory teams have more than one bike at every race event

Noise limits in pretty much any Motorsport people. From Saturday night dirt track karts up to F1. Can't be a complete menis to society and blow everyone's ear drums

The sound test is more related to choking the bikes down and keeping the field somewhat more fair than it is actual noise.

All this does is make techs get good at cheating the sound test. Double air filters, taping over air inlets, overpacked mufflers, and I’m sure a ton of other tricks regular dudes don’t know. There’s no sound test after so you pass sound, then take all that shit off. It is absolutely a waste of time and energy.

To the Yamaha with the stock exhaust. The stock mufflers on a couple of the stock 450's do't pass sound. I know stock Kawi and Yamaha don't pass for sure.
