Salming journey was much harder than his contemporary, was much harder to climb, n he did it, in majestic fashion. Toronto's fans are hard to be pleased. They had very high bar for anyone wearing the leafs. They were unforgiving, n those were maple leafs dark ages when salming was here, but salming year after year , conquered toronto bravely, gracefully, a true king. Im very happy that i had seen him play.

Countless times saw salming blocked shots, was abused by opponents, he stood up, never back down.
When the leafs was a trash team, he stepped in to help , created countless chances for teammates to score.
Still remember later on in 80s, the team was full of rookies n youngsters knew nothing to do. Salming always there led by examples, not to be afraided facing the power houses. Without salming , the players were only a group of scared puppies....he was just like an old king led the charge in the front with rookie soldiers.

So well said, I don't think people understand the strength and character it took to break into the NHL at that time . A legend among legends.

God bless the legend. That year in 2006, Numbers 4 and 21 were honored to rafters, until it was permanently retired 10 years later.

  • @johneddy98033

Not only did they retire Borje Salming's number 21 that evening. If you look closely you could also see that the number 4, worn by Borje's coach Red Kelly during his playing days in Toronto, along with Hap Day when he played, was also raised to the rafters.

I recall reading in Salming's autobiographical book what a gentleman he thought Red Kelly always was when he coached the Leafs in the mid-70's. Salming said that he once threw a temper tantrum directed at Kelly during a game because he disagreed with Kelly's coaching decisions. Kelly didn't say anything. Salming said that he apologized to the coach after the game. Kelly responded with, "It's o.k Borje." Salming also wrote that Red gave Salming's son Anders his first pair of skates. A true gentleman.

  • @Maxie1111

He did do so much for the game, but even though he didn't have his own ceremony, he completely had the ceremony to himself even when Red's and Day's jerserys numbers were honored. And yes, I think he should have his number retired not just by the club, but by the whole league cause he was the first Euro superstar the NHL has ever had. I would like to see Philly retire his number, they would be happy and insulted at the same time, lol.
