  • This video shows the disassembly and internal workings of the Kia Sorento door latch mechanism that fails due to a small internal torsion spring that fractures. Spring is part of the lock mechanism that causes the handle to no longer engage the latch system.

I just bought a replacement lock for my 2011 kia, but the cheapest I found was 80$. Thanks, great explanation. All that money for a 1 cent part....ugh.

Very good work. I forged a spring by myself using old spring and it worked just fine 😂

My spring broke the exact same way. I fixed my handle with the exact spring that broke. I unwound the spring one turn and bent the arm straight. The two arms should be close to parallel to each other to work. I hope it helps...

Finally getting at the problem. I'm thinking of using a piece of sponge behind the lever to push it forward Unless the spring kit I bought provides an appropriate to modify spring .Right now I am having trouble removing the latch & inner metal panel-- But another video mentions a bolt accessed from the door edge

I finally got the chance to remove the door on Kia Sorento 2011. But the mechanism on my Kia is completely different way smaller and simpler than what you're showing!

Call Kia Motors they will replace the spring on the front doors one time at no charge. The rear doors are covered for 10 years regardless of mileage. It is a pain in the neck to do it yourself so save yourself time and money.

Did they do this without it being under warranty? I have a 2011 that’s not under warranty and just had this happen

I know it's been a while since you posted this but at one point you mention getting the assembly online and at another you mention getting it from the dealer. can you enlighten us on what the assembly is called and where you were able to secure it for that $55 fee. This happened to our sorento yesterday and my wife is in the "fix this now" mode! LOL... thanks for the info!

    Hey Bill. How are you?
Do you know, why the passenger's window no down from driver's panel control?
    P.S :I can up, but I can't down.
    Kia Sorento 2011
From Passenger's panel windows works perfectly.

I did not take measurements and could not find a similar spring on Century Springs web site
I bit the bullet and bought an entire assembly.

Were you able to find just the spring anywhere? What is this part? (Dealer did "customer satisfaction" "upgrade" a little over a year ago - now part breaks, and they want $360 to look at it, $121 for "the part." )

John, Could not find a spring that had all the bends that the original factory unit had. Ordered the entire assembly from the dealership and installed myself.
Removal and install was a bit of a challenge.

Hey Bill - have you got the spring dimensions - length of each leg, inside diameter, number of full coils, approximate angle between legs when relaxed, wire diameter. Lots of spring suppliers I might be able to get one from near where I live

Thank you for posting this. Was very helpful. They really should have had a long term recall on these units including for out of warranty owners since it was obviously a defect in design. A critical component such as a door locking mechanism should not come with a shelf life of well under 10 years. That's just insane. I opted to buy the OEM unit for $50 delivered next day from Amazon, rather than drilling out rivets, buying a spring kit and trying to fashion a replacement, and not knowing fully what the actual issue is until I had the entire assembly extracted and opened up, during which time my wife would be unable to use the car. Easy enough just to purchase a new unit and be done. Saving $450 from the rip off stealership makes its highly worth it.

Had the same problem with the door on my in-laws sorento, I replaced the actuator, but now even though it opens and closes, once you lock it, it will only open manually from the inside. But once opened from the inside, it works just fine. Any ideas?

That happened to me, first you can't open the inside latch. Went to dealer and told me it's not a recall item. Wanted to charge me $100. I refused to pay it. So got to my car and it's working. After 3 years, the door latch outside quit working. I know there was a recall about door latch, but dealer said, that mechanism is not a recall. Why can't Kia use a good type of spring!

I have a 2011 PS Sorento and my back door won't open from the outside so I went to the dealer and they told me that it was gonna cost me $300 so then I asked what would it cost just for the parts and they told me a $155.34 sense so I contacted Kia edit and I started in October 10 And they 21 and they wouldn't help me So today is may 7th and I went to go to my car but to my car and the door would not open on the driver's side so I
Had to go in the passenger side to open my door it was pulling down raining and it was dark out I was in the parking lot and all I can think of is what if someone was chasing me it's chasing me I'm going to try to call key again tomorrow it is outrageous that these parts keep breaking and they won't do anything to help

I hate my Kia. I loved it till all the stupid little things started acting up. Now it’s a pain in my ass. Has 115,000 miles and has more issues with things besides the motor than my 2000 Chevy that has almost 300,000 miles.
