Yeah, I was kind of shocked Scotty was geeking off of the fiero. NORMALLY, he is a Toyota guy. HE IS correct on if Pontiac had used the hp on the Fiero they would have sold like hot cakes. THE problem was The Corvette people were scared of this car taking away their buyers and they kept interfering with the Fieros development.
I own a couple fieros and am currently doing this swap at the moment, fieros are underrated and the stock v6 was perfectly acceptable power even for today, but the 3800 s/c turns this car into something serious. Fantastic video!
@@brentboswell1294 when Fiero came out, mechanic were not too happy to work on Fiero, bit crowded under the lid but by todays standard, Fiero is now a breeze almost. Todays car are really dense under the hood, no place to work on.
@@marks4374 The highest price that I know of was $90,000 for the final Fiero to roll off the lot in Pontiac Michigan. Actually the last vehicle built in Pontiac Michigan
I bought a 2M4 Fiero with a 5 speed new in 86 for $9K. I put 129K miles on the original clutch. I sold it to my brother and he put another 100K on the car before he sold it. This was the most reliable car I’ve owned. All it needed was gas, oil, breaks and tires. The car was not a garage queen, it a was daily driver in Chicago for 10 years.
Loved these fieros as a teen in the 80s. Went to the local Pontiac dealer and would check them out and sit in them. New car smell, still had the plastic wrap on the seats and steering wheel. Now my kid drives one.
Does anyone remember at all. The GM built rear engine car: the Corvair. I got one from my Grandfather. A 1968 Monza version. He said, with a little tuning and edits on the air filter. It used to outdo the Porche 911 in his day. I might change the carbs and update the exhaust, plus, put a front spoiler. And to counter the rear, more weight in the front.
I had two of them. Both of them almost killed me. When those early sealed bearings went out you lost the brakes. But those motors made great sand rails.
My Dad had one. Started leaking oil the first year. Got married the next year. Had Twins 9 months later. Traded it in and got a used 57 Chevy nomad wagon till 66, then bought Buick’s till the 80s. Then bought Honda’s from then on. He’s 83 now, and drives a 2008 Crv Honda and loves it.
What is better with them, what is different? I test drive a 87. But it has a special suspension installed. Crazy fast in corners.. or would you never buy a 87?
At 6'4" myownself, I was pleasantly surprised to find how well I fit in the thing. And the center tunnel is nice and high providing probably the best armrest I've had in a car. I have an '88 Formula and love it.
Got my ‘88 Fiero base model from a junkyard, it had 244k miles on it with a seized up Iron Duke. It had been sitting there for a year with original asking price of $3,200, it had finally been lowered to $2,500, my cousin called me last month and told me they had a Fiero for $1,800 and I had him tell me the color. I confirmed it was the same one, I talk to the GM at the junkyard to see what they’d take, $1,400 for car and TTL. I told her I’d think about it and talk to some buddies online, it was a 50/50 with responses, it’s a steal, wait and you can get a better deal. For its condition, I decided to go get it on 3/23/2021. Got news of seized engine when I was informed it was timing, I felt hopeless except for the guy storing and working on it on his yard hooked me up on a new engine and transmission for $400. A $2,000 running Fiero with added maintenance and minor things was a steal of a deal for me. I can’t wait to drive it.
The 1990 prototype was slated to get the 3.8, further in production. The 1988 had the better suspension. The MR2 was a nightmare to work on and had its own cooling issues. If you find a MR2 with rot, run!
those are the ones to have unless you totally rework the dm4 and like he says take the iron duke and junk it , put a nice metric v6 in it plus a G6 Getrag 6 speed manual
I haven't driven one with the 3800, but I'm honestly not sure it needs it. Not every car has to be a tire shredder, and the 2.8 has a great low-end grunt personality that I enjoy. I can't help but think that 310 RWHP would just upset the balance.. that much extra power and a little extra weight in the back and I can't help but think you'll just end up with snap oversteer. I think it'd be interesting to see something like the Fiesta ST drivetrain swapped in. This would shave off maybe 100lbs in the rear, and you'd have right around 200hp/tq. That could be fun! I don't think I'd want to mess with all that turbo shenanigans, tho. I'm good with my factory 2.8 V6 ;).
With all due respect Scotty, but I remember the chief engineer on this car was a Turk named Hülki Aldıkaçtı. He was known as the "Turkish Father of the American Ferrari". I remember reading in Motor Trend that GM went against Mr Aldıkaçtı's proposal of installing the Buick 3.8L turbo in this thing. His idea is being validated by you here :)
My wife bought the first 1986 GT in our area. The car really turned heads because there really wasn’t any cars like it on the road. She loved that car. Lots of fun! I miss the 80s.
I had mine for 7 years as a daily driver. Finally needed to get a car with a back seat after putting 90,000 miles on it, 2 round trips from Cleveland to Miami and one round trip to Amarillo from Cleveland.
Currently have an '88 Formula. Love it. Better than the Miata in my opinion, unless you really want a convertible of course. Truth be told, I'm not convinced this thing needs that 310hp of 3800SC goodness. I think it'd probably be optimal at somewhere around 210hp. Would love to do the Twin Dual Cam swap.
My brother worked as a test driver at the GM proving grounds in Milford Michigan! He told us Pontiac had developed Fiero with a twin Turbo and were blowing the Doors off the Chevy Corvette and Buick Grand National on the test Track. Buick and Chevy put a stop to this car due to the price point would have cut into sales of there cars! The Corvette has always been GM flagship sports car. Just think if they had produced this car! Chevy just made the new Corvette like this Fiero 35 plus years later! WOW GM is still in business after making bad decisions for 50 plus years!!!
I had the 88 model with the 2.8 v6 and 5 speed manual for 13 years. Coolest car I ever owned with a timeless design. It looked more expensive that it was.
I have some friends who have an 85' Fiero with the 4 cylinder iron duke. I drove it for a 300 mile cruise because I couldn't get my Datsun 280zx In good enough mechanical condition, and that trip made me want to buy a Fiero, lol.
@recidivists; Scotty did mention twice about "///doing whatever You want with it .. " putting in a "V-8". He did not mention any specific V-8 engine. There are some that but in the NorthStar 4.8 L, and it seems more have put in a LS-4, 5.3 L and of them many with a singe or twin turbocharger(s) [of various sizes]. There are even fewer that have put in a Corvette LT1 with a six speed transmission. Certainly the options with all V-6, V-8 can be Supercharger-blower or turbocharger. Also the same options may have done wit the Toyota MR2 with TRD and Honda J-,K- Series 4 cylinder, V-6, V-8 engines work well also. Imagine putting a 5.7 L, COPO, Coyote, Toyota, especially a NASCAR version 955 bHP N/A, LT2 Corvette 6.2 L, Dodge HEMI, Hellcat, Redeye or others ! When considering increasing the engine HP & Torque, the entire drive train, must be considered, which in this design is the trans-axle, axles, through wheel hubs. Also proper upgraded brakes must included. Some suspension upgrades may be needed. The 1987-88 GT had the original intended independent suspension, similar with the Corvette C4. This platform is one of the best to work with for many applications: A. "Fun', enjoyable 'Roadaster' B. Powerful, sporty driving vehicle, experience C. nearly all types of racing applications: road, track, time trial, drag, including drive & race events. D. Great potential for a high efficiency vehicle with sporty shape, styling, etc. This was and has been one of my favorite vehicles, ever designed and produced. Clearly Toyota copied most of it - first production MR2 1988 - their second version looks more similar to the Fiero GT. Imagine using a Fiero to have a Stanley Meyer Hydrogen innovation, implementation engine ! Or other combinations of motors, power, etc. ! Scotty also did not quite mention the advantages about the body completely either. The panels are a composite, polymer, which is flexible, durable, light weight, not like fiberglass or carbon-fiber. The flexible body panels allow for some amount of forces and return to their shape and are easily replaceable. This same exact material, idea was used in the Saturn car line. Their assembly, factory was a brand new, robotic plant in Tennessee, built in cooperation with Toyota [part owner]. Perhaps You remember if You are old enough ? All The Best Sincerely
I had an 85 fiero and my son and I drove it from ne Ohio to arizona and it was a great road car and comfortable too. The pontiac dealer in Prescott had never worked on one and I had to show them how to get to the engine.
GM did the same thing with the Olds Cutlass coupe. The 2.3L Quad4. 170hp. 7000 rpm redline. 5 speed manual. That was 1993, a couple years before the hi revving 4 banger craze really got traction. The Q4 blew head gaskets all the time, GM killed that engine/trans combo and just went back to the boring 3.1/4T40 combo.
It was sad because by '88 they worked out the kinks, then dropped it. Scotty was right. A better engine and it would have been a seller. However, it may have cannibalized the F-body (Camaro/Firebird) and Corvette sales.
They caught of fire because the first 400ish or so in 1984 had a design problem. They had to raise the oil pan for better balance and they didnt shorten the dipstick so youd have low oil but no know because ur dipstick was too lang and then caboofy. But they were recalled and dont catch on fire. Some 1984z will have a badge on the window showing it being recalled
My cousin Kelly had a Pulsar. Great steering feel. Someone backed into the front left bumper and left a dent we couldn't fix (no heat gun). But the Volvo rear end crumpled.
I remember those Pontiac Fieros. Crazy times the 80's. Never a big fan because I was 6'6" by 1984, couldn't even fit in them. I also love the shadow of your video setup towards the end. Thanks again Scotty. PEACE & SAFETY TO ALL.
I love my 88 GT to this day. I bought it new in late 1987. I only have 56k miles on it. It’s been garaged for about 30 out of the 33 years that I’ve had it.
Those first Fieros back in 1984 were junk. I wouldn't offer someone $1 for one. But in 1987 GM had worked the bugs out and there were decent cars then. That 2.8 V-6 and the manual transmission could last a long time. Those 1987-88 Fieros are really underrated.
I still got a few 3rd brake light assemblies (CHMSL) for those Pontiac Fiero's ,they was actually halogen bulbs in them & not regular 1156 bulbs ,its nice to see that car got a clean OEM interior & body panels on it
I had an 86' and I loved it. Peppy and great on gas. The 5 spd had an issue with the shifting rod and would ruin the transmission. Even though I replaced the rod, it was too late. Eventually, 2nd gear started to grind if you wound it too hard. Traded it in to save from a big headache
Scotty, the corvette division is what killed the Fiero. Fiero was about to put a turbo charged 6 in there and when Corvette found out, they killed it. Because people were already buying Fieros instead of corvettes. I used to have a fiero, the code for the turbo-charger was already in the car's computer. They were already planning for it.
At 1:31 Scotty Oil would get on the Exhaust start a fire then "WOOF" shows a Dog At 10:44 Scotty There is a lot of Fiero's in the Junk. Yard shows Chevy Dealer
One of the memorable street racing videos on RUclips I remember was some copper-orange painted one with Indiana plates that had a similar spec'd 3800 setup with wide tires on the rear. Whoever had that one got the suspension and transmission dialed in, and would get about 3 car lengths on other cars that had close to 3X the power it had. That thing just hooked up perfectly with the pavement every time, which really was amusing to watch. (Comparable to a Tesla in ludicrous mode, but only the rear wheels doing the job.) I wonder if anyone else recalls seeing that, and is it part of Fiero lore?
GM upper management didn't want the Fiero to compete with the vette. There is a story about how GM had a lot of reporters at the Milford proving grounds to see the new corvette. The were 2 race prepped Fieros with aluminum V6's testing at the same time. Apparently the reporters were very impressed with the Fiero and many actually thought it was the new vette. That was the beginning of the end of the Fiero.
@@dyingculture1 got it for 18k. Not bad in my opinion. Dealership wanted to get rid of it since a lot folks don’t get the Avalon and elect to get the ES instead
Nailed it. It's a cheap car that no one wants but with a trip ir two to the junk yard you can build it however you want. I have a Cadillac V8 and a G6 Six speed in mine.
I had a very early production ‘84 Fiero which I had special-ordered in September ‘83, two days after the public debut. It was fun until the transmission went out at 60K miles. I wish I still had it.
Mom had a Formula with the V6 and it sounded phenomenal. Performance was good but you could really feel the engine roar during hard acceleration. I got to tell you it was awesome
My first car was a Buick Regal grandsport with the 3800 V6, fully loaded with a sunroof and power seats. The leather seats were the best. The coolant line popped off in the winter. I didnt realized and I blew the engine driving on the highway 🤣
This video reminds me Of the mid 90s when I was working at a garden center. We carried sod and put in people's vehicles. Sometimes they would come up in caddys and have us put it in their trunk. But the most bizarre car loading the car owner had a fiero and told me to put it on the back of the car over the vents. I said are you serious? He said yes and went ahead a loaded his car that way. Also told my manager how the car owner had me load his car in case he came back and try'ed to say I said to do it that way.
I had a 1985 GT 2.8 V6 4spd. I loved it. At around 90mph the headlight covers would raise up. Pontiac fixed that on later years. The 1990 would have been a true budget sports car.
Very cool car with those mods! The Fiero spaceframe design with plastic body panels was a precursor to Saturn's use of that approach a few years down the road. The "real" Spring Hill built S Series Saturns anyway, and then the Opel Vectra based L Series minus the rear quarter panels, the VUE and the ION all used the plastic body panels. In its later years Saturn just sold straight rebadged Opel/GM stuff. GM always manages to mess up a good thing!
Great cars, I owned a new 84 4 banger, stick shift terrible cable linkage, but great car. Then I purchased an 86 with the V6 and automatic excellent. Should have never sold that one. Most leg room of a small car I have ever seen.
@@andreamerino9146 Yeah the only issue with your statement is that I wasn't specific on which vehicle I would be restoring. Some older vehicles are worth restoring and does increase the value.
always wanted a fiero since I was in HS back in the early 2k's. Granted I'm 6'2" and I hear they can be a tight fit but I have an 02 Grand Prix and I like that car and I'm just imagining how a v6 fiero would be!
The Fiero was a neat little car. Think Miata or Veloster. It was meant to be affordable fun, not a race car. Not a muscle car. Not an expensive exotic. I've never driven one, but I'd imagine with the 2.8L V6 it probably had enough power to be fun for the time. With that supercharged 3.8L it's probably a little monster. Still a great looking car. The exterior design has aged really well.
I have a 86 Fiero GT with a 4.9 Cadillac engine. I built it with custom suspension, 5 speed manual gearbox, leather seats and 18" wheels and expensive tires. Because of my age I will be selling it next spring.
I have a 86 Fiero with the 4 cylinder and the 5 speed manual. It has been fun and pretty reliable and gets good mpg. I have had the clutch replaced, the fuel pump, alternator and fuel injector. GM parts are easy to get and not that expensive. I have read the people have swapped in the Cadillac 4.9 V8 which has the same front wheel sized drive bell housing. Mine has 145k and still runs pretty well. I have no complaints about the Fiero.
I have owned and still own several Fieros. I've owned at least one for 20+ years. I have over 500,000 miles across several Fieros. Great and fun cars. Have one engine swap and plan two more. Even my stock 88GT is a blast to drive.
@ttime685 Scotty had some help with this video. Scotty is holding the camera and someone started the car. Then you see the shadow of person trying to move out of the video frame after they shut down the Fiero. He has company in the car! Someone is driving him as he films. 😁
That was just a shadow I was far more bothered by the in car filming. That inertia reel seatbelt (sorry don't know the US English for that) bags and bags of slack on the belt. You would be wanting a much tighter belt in case of an accident!
I had a Olds Silhouette with that 3800 V-6. It was the only bulletproof thing about that mini-van. I drove it for 14 years and when I sold it that engine was still going strong. I hold that engine in the highest esteem.
Disappointed he didn’t finish the job by converting it to a 5 or 6 speed stick. All that work replacing the engine with that great supercharged 3800 and he left it an automatic?
@@Blackferret66 The Getrag 282 5 speed bolts right up to the L67 S/C 3800. The 3800 uses the same bell housing pattern as the 2.8-3.1 GM V6s which was the original V6 in this Fiero and it was available with that Getrag 282. Just need a custom flywheel but companies do make those now. Plenty of guys have done 5 speed swaps with the 3800

I own a couple fieros and am currently doing this swap at the moment, fieros are underrated and the stock v6 was perfectly acceptable power even for today, but the 3800 s/c turns this car into something serious. Fantastic video!
You can put an LS4 in a Fiero and surprisingly the V8 combo doesn’t weigh much more than the supercharged V6.
Do you still have the fieros?
My uncle was my mechanic for a decade until he passed. The only time I heard him cuss was when I would bring my 84 Fiero over for him to work on.
Too bad, I used to love working on my Fiero (4 cylinder) when I was in college. You could sit in the engine bay while wrenching on it 😉
The first 3 years were not good, the last year 88 was a great car.
@@brentboswell1294 I wish the v6 had that kinda room.

It's incredible these 88 fieros Are not getting snatched up in extremely high demand and turned into supercars with some pretty simple modification.
I wonder how much somebody would be willing to buy mine for. hmm.
@@marks4374 The highest price that I know of was $90,000 for the final Fiero to roll off the lot in Pontiac Michigan. Actually the last vehicle built in Pontiac Michigan
@@raydemarco427nice and sad story. What modifications do you mean exactly?
I bought a 2M4 Fiero with a 5 speed new in 86 for $9K. I put 129K miles on the original clutch. I sold it to my brother and he put another 100K on the car before he sold it. This was the most reliable car I’ve owned. All it needed was gas, oil, breaks and tires. The car was not a garage queen, it a was daily driver in Chicago for 10 years.
Too bad your brother never swapped out the Iron Puke engine out with a Quad 4. MPG and performance would have improved even more.
Is the car still driving? And what was the mpg
A guy that lived across the street from me had 4 of those, 2 were fully restored with really nice paint jobs and everything.
Unsafe at any speed !😀
My Dad had one. Started leaking oil the first year. Got married the next year. Had Twins 9 months later. Traded it in and got a used 57 Chevy nomad wagon till 66, then bought Buick’s till the 80s. Then bought Honda’s from then on. He’s 83 now, and drives a 2008 Crv Honda and loves it.
Sure it beat a 911. Lmao
GM had finally worked the bugs out of the Fiero by 1988, and then they discontinued it.
Typical GM move.
Thank Chevy for that.
it had Chevette front suspension.
I know that is what the auto mags said about the car .. Especially the v6 model was praised
Exactly!!!
The 3800 was a great GM engine. It was the powerplant for the Buick Grand National and the GNX, which were beasts back in the day.

looking at buying one of those at the moment, ever since I saw a fiero i was hooked, its a beautiful car.
I have had a Fiero for my driver since I bought my first '86 in '89. Currently drive an 88 with V6 5 speed.
Still have it?
Whatever you do, look for the 1988 model year car first, best suspension setup from the factory.
What is better with them, what is different? I test drive a 87. But it has a special suspension installed. Crazy fast in corners.. or would you never buy a 87?
Like how Scotty is inside the car with the owner smacking his dash an saying the thing squeaks and rattles like an old mattress 😂
We fiero owners take the squeaks and rattles as a badge of honor.
I always loved these cars. Being 6'4", I appreciate the legroom available. Great video, I'm surprised Scotty didn't completely bash the car.
Many don't realize how much leg room these actually have.
Rev'd up my engine! Now I have a P0302 code 🤯
Cylinder 2 misfire. Oh no.
Better than a P0020
I owned 2 of these that were GT's with V-6's...loved them. Cheap on gas and fun.
those are the ones to have unless you totally rework the dm4 and like he says take the iron duke and junk it , put a nice metric v6 in it plus a G6 Getrag 6 speed manual
What was the mpg?
@@rehab4everybody close to 30.
Fiero, the mid engine GM car that pre dates the c8 Vette.
Yeah the Fiero is the C8's daddy.
The 3800 is just a dream engine for mine. I'll live with the 2.8 V6 another 20 years😎
I haven't driven one with the 3800, but I'm honestly not sure it needs it.
The Fiero is the most slept on Pontiac gem. You can put any motor you want in it. Great weight distribution,4 wheel disc, and insanely strong chassis.
My wife bought the first 1986 GT in our area. The car really turned heads because there really wasn’t any cars like it on the road. She loved that car. Lots of fun! I miss the 80s.
I had an 88 formula edition. I loved that car and could out corner anyone.
Heck yeah, the suspension was copied rumor be told from Lotus
Love my 88 Formula. Put 4,000 miles on it this year.
I had mine for 7 years as a daily driver. Finally needed to get a car with a back seat after putting 90,000 miles on it, 2 round trips from Cleveland to Miami and one round trip to Amarillo from Cleveland.
just bought one with 74k miles. Drove it from Colorado to Texas. Now has 75k miles. I love it. Automatic, I don't even care.
Wow same hear
The poor man's Ferrari. In a good way.
same here I had a Formula (2.8 liter/5-speed).
Soon they will be as expensive as they look hahahaha
I have one now and have had it for seven years. I have driven a Fiero as my "driver" since '89.
I have some friends who have an 85' Fiero with the 4 cylinder iron duke. I drove it for a 300 mile cruise because I couldn't get my Datsun 280zx In good enough mechanical condition, and that trip made me want to buy a Fiero, lol.
What I have always dreamed of doing for mine! Feels good having Scotty's approval!
Scotty forgets to mention the V8 swaps with a NorthStar or LS type. That car was competition for the Vette back in the day. Killed appropriately.
This platform is one of the best to work with for many applications:
A. "Fun', enjoyable 'Roadaster'
B. Powerful, sporty driving vehicle, experience
C. nearly all types of racing applications: road, track, time trial, drag, including drive & race events.
All The Best
Sincerely
I was waiting for Scotty to say “Since it’s mechanic Monday, I’m giving away a Pontiac Fiero.”

'88 was the best year in the GT trim. GM killed it after that year. Yet another example of a good idea fumbled by GM.
Yup. Gm is discontinuing the Camaro as well. So...nothing has change since '88.
@@timothycc711 I wonder how many birds they would sell if they brought pontiac back
GM did the same thing with the Olds Cutlass coupe.
I have a 1986 Fiero SE, with a v-6, automatic. Only 62k kilometres. Runs great!
As a Fiero enthusiast I would appreciate it if he wouldn't lean on every single part of the Fiero especially the wing eeesh

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Fiero and the MR2 of the day.
The 3.8 v6 alone would be more than adequate for a fiero. The supercharger just makes it even more powerful.
I'd take one of these with the supercharged 3800 over a Polaris Slingshot any day.
It looks badass! I can only imagine if GM would of done things like this back on the days!
I love my fiero it's not the fastest thing but I'm not gonna get rid of it anytime soon also I'm only 17 and bought it for 1500

At 10:44 Scotty There is a lot of Fiero's in the Junk.
(Comparable to a Tesla in ludicrous mode, but only the rear wheels doing the job.)
I wonder if anyone else recalls seeing that, and is it part of Fiero lore?
There ya have it. Scotty just praised gm for their 3800 v6
