  • Sean Pennala got into the auto and diesel industry when he was just 6 years old. His dad bought him a XR80 dirt bike for Christmas. In order to use the bike, the rule was Sean needed to change a spark plug on his brand-new bike. His dad handed him a manual, a wrench, a pencil and a notepad and told him to figure it out.
Today, Sean has been a diesel technician for Rush Peterbilt Truck Center for the past 4 years. After serving in the military launching F18s and other aircraft, Sean enrolled at Universal Technical Institute (UTI) to get the foundation he needed for a career as a diesel tech. After 2 years, he graduated from the automotive and diesel programs, which he says have paid him back immensely in his career.
During his first class of basic engines at UTI, Sean’s instructor brought the class to a career fair. Sean checked out the Rush Peterbilt booth and had an on-site interview with one of the recruiters. Sean said he was looking to go into diesel, and the company gave him the chance to take a job with them.
Sean says going to his job is fun every day. His specialties are engine overhauls, rebuilding and teardowns. He says he is always learning, which makes getting up and going to work enjoyable.
Sean says one day when he’s done wrenching, he would like to come back and be a teacher at UTI. He enjoys helping other people and would like to give back to the community, which makes teaching at UTI a great fit.
Sean says going to UTI gives you the basics and foundation you need to succeed. He advises other students to get in there and not be afraid to take things apart and learn.

Great question! Unfortunately at this time, we only offer the program Mon - Fri. Most students work while attending, but it would have to be a job in an area where we have a campus. Thank you!
